Microsoft Windows NT, Beta October 1992
Problem Running DOS/Windows Applications on Systems with IBM Token Ring Adapters
Error message: "Memory could not be read."

The Microsoft Windows NT product group has recently identified an application
interoperability problem with the October Beta release of Windows NT. On
systems where an IBM Token Ring adapter card is installed, an instruction error
may occur and return "Memory could not be read." If you are running a system
with an IBM Token Ring adapter card, you may experience this problem.

Through your efforts in beta testing and incoming reports, we have been made
aware of the problem and Microsoft Windows NT test and development groups have
made the fix available for our customers encountering the problem today. We
apologize for any inconvenience this problem may have caused.

Please follow the below instructions carefully to remedy this problem. If you
continue to encounter similar problems, please let us know. Thank you for
your continued beta testing efforts.

If you receive an instruction error message indicating "Memory could not
be read." when running DOS/Windows applications on Windows NT and an IBM
Token Ring adapter card is installed, please take the following steps to
remedy the problem. You need not be logged on as Administrator to complete
this exercise.

1. First, close all applications running on the desktop.

2. Using the File Manager, locate NTOSKRNL.EXE in the Windows NT installation
path. For example, C:\WINNT\SYSTEM. From the menu, select File, Rename
and rename this file to NTOSKRNL.OLD.

3. Repeat step 2 above for NTVDM.EXE and rename this file to NTVDM.OLD.

4. Insert the floppy disk into a disk drive containing the updated versions
    of NTOSKRNL.EXE and NTVDM.EXE.

5. Using the File Manager, click on the corresponding drive icon. Select
NTOSKRNL.EXE and from the menu, select File, Copy, To: and type in the
appropriate path destination. For example, C:\WINNT\SYSTEM.

6. Repeat step 5 above for NTVDM.EXE.

7. Exit File Manager.

8. Shutdown Windows NT by pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL, Shutdown, OK.

Further execution of applications on the system will proceed normally.
