		    Using the program Net Ionic

Net ionic equations can be rather difficult for the
introductory high school and college chemistry student. This program
is designed to provide the student with a method of practicing net ionic
equations in a non-threatening manner. The Advanced Placement Chemistry
Exam administered by the College Board each May contains a number of
reactions that need to be put in net ionic form. This program provides
for an excellent way of practicing for that portion of the exam.
The program grades each answer in a fashion similar to the way the
answers are graded for the A.P. Exam. To obtain a registered copy
of netionic see the file register.txt. Netionic 1.5 is designed for
Windows 95 or NT.

Installing netionic on you hard drive.
Start windows and place the disk with the netionic files in your
disk drive. Click on Start in the lower left hand corner and then click
on Run. The name of the program to be run is A:install. If the files
are on directory C:\temp then enter c:\temp\install. The files will be
installed onto your hard drive and a program group created for netionic
including icons for some of the netionic files.

Using NetIonic
To start a practice session select Start from the Net Ionic Menu
or press F3. Select the type(s) of reaction(s) desired from the dialog box.
You may select more than one type in any combination. Click on OK and a
dialog box will appear containing a reaction. Put the reaction in net
ionic form by dissociating soluble salts, strong acids, and strong bases.
Eliminate any spectator ions and then enter the reactants on the reactant
side of the dialog box. The oxidation numbers of the species entered go
into the boxes to the upper right of each box. Oxidation numbers may be
entered as +,+1,or1+ for plus one, -,-1,or 1- for minus 1, and with the
sign before or after the number for all other charges. Zero oxidation
states do not need to be entered. Do not enter ++ for plus 2 or ++++ for
plus four. There are enough boxes for up to 5 reactants and 5 products.
All boxes do not need to have an entry. With most reactions the majority
of boxes will be blank since there will be fewer than 5 reactants and 5
products. When completed Click the left mouse button on OK or press the
enter key. The program will grade the answer on a 3 point scale. One
point is awarded for the correct reactants and 2 points are rewarded for
the correct product(s). If 3 points are not awarded the correct answer
will be displayed along with the number of points earned. When all
reactions in the categories chosen are presented a message box will
appear. The session can be terminated at any time by selecting Quit
from the dialog box.
The unregistered version of the program has a total of 10
reactions which cannot be changed. The registered version allows new
reactions to be added, changed, and deleted. The number of reactions
that can be added is limited only by free disk space.

Changing the Reaction List
Click on Edit Reactions and a Window will appear containing
all of the reactions currently contained in the data base. The scroll
bars or arrow keys can be used to scroll the reaction list so that it
can be viewed. Reactions can be added, changed, or deleted by using
the Edit Menu. None of these options are functional in the unregistered
version. All of them function in the registered version. To return back
to the previous window select Start Reactions from the Menu. When all
changes are completed Select Start Reactions. The changes will not take
place until the program is exited and then restarted.

Printing a Quiz
Quizzes can be printed by using the reaction data base when in
the edit mode. Select the reactions you want to include on the quiz by
clicking on the checkbox to the left each reaction desired. Then select
Print Quiz from the Net Ionic Menu. Only questions that are displayed
can be selected for quizzes.

Changing the reactions displayed.
Choosing the Display Item when in the edit mode can change the
types of reactions that are currently displayed. Undisplayed reactions
are still in the data base but are not visible on screen. Only questions
that are displayed can be changed, deleted, or included on a printed quiz.

Adding a reaction.
To add a reaction to the reaction list select this item from
the Edit Menu or press the Insert key when in the edit mode. A dialog
box will appear. Type in the reaction on the line at the top of the
dialog box. Enter the species contained in the net ionic equation in
the input boxes toward the bottom. The boxes on the left are for
reactants and those on the right are for products. As many as 5 reactants
and 5 products can be included. Put the correct symbol for each species
in the symbol boxes and the oxidation number for each species in the charge
box. Oxidation numbers may be entered as +,+1,or1+ for plus one, -,-1,or
1- for minus 1, and with the sign before or after the number for all other
charges. Zero oxidation states do not need to be entered. Do not enter
++ for plus 2 or ++++ for plus four. When completed press enter or
Click the left mouse button on OK.

Changing a reaction.
To change a reaction to the reaction list select this item
from the Edit Menu or press the F4 key when in the edit mode. A dialog
box will appear. Change the reaction as desired. Oxidation numbers may
be entered as +,+1,or1+ for plus one, -,-1,or 1- for minus 1, and with
the sign before or after the number for all other charges. Zero oxidation
states do not need to be entered. Do not enter ++ for plus 2 or ++++ for
plus four. When completed press enter or Click the left mouse button on
OK.

Deleting a Reaction
To delete a reaction from the reaction list select this item
from the Edit Menu or press the Delete key when in the edit mode. A
dialog box will appear. Type in the number of the reaction you want to
delete. When completed press enter or Click the left mouse button on OK.

Exiting the Program
To quit the program select this menu item or press Alt-x.
