Linux is a UNIX clone, developed by Linus Torvalds and thousands of volunteers on the Internet. Slackware is heavy-duty version of Linux for mid-size businesses and departments but user-friendly enough for home users. The first CDROM contains the easy-to-install Linux system (kernel 2.0.30), source code and a live Linux file system. Recompile with complete source code! For the other CDROMs, Patrick carefully selected the best software from Internet Linux archives. Slackware Linux requires 4-8 MB of memory and 12 MB of hard disk. For better performance, install Slackware Linux to your hard disk using 40 to 300 MB. An installation with C/C++, development tools, networking, the XFree86 X Window System (v. 3.3.1), and several applications uses 80 MB. A fuller installation includes teTeX TeX, GNU C/C++/Objective-C (v. 2.7.2.3), GNU Fortran-77 (v. 0.5.21), Tcl (v. 7.5), Tk (v. 4.1), TclX (v. 7.5.0), make, byacc and GNU bison, flex, the 5.4.33 C libraries, gdb, GNU Common LISP (v. 2.2.2), p2c (Pascal to C), m4, perl (v. 5.004_03), rcs, emacs (v. 19.34), TCP/IP networking, SLIP/PPP, IP accounting and firewalls, kernel Java support and Java SDK, BSD sendmail (v. 8.8.7), cnews, nn, tin, trn, inn, fvwm95-2, XF86Setup, ghostscript, xv (v. 3.10a), GNU chess, xfm (v. 1.3.2), gnuplot, xfractint, the Apache HTTP (WWW) server (v. 1.2.0), and the Arena and Lynx Web browsers. Slackware Linux is compatible with most Intel hardware & supports most CDROM drives, sound, ethernet, and mice. The advanced 2.0.30 kernel will provide stellar performance on high-end systems, including support for symmetric multi-processing (up to 16 processors), PCI, and special code optimizations for the 486, Pentium, Pentium Pro, and Pentium II.
