Section 1 - Overview of Readme.txt

This file contains information allowing the user to install
and use Variable Conversions. It is best starting point for
a user who has just unzipped Variable Conversions.

There are, at present, two versions of Variable Conversions
available. Available on BBS's and INTERNET is the shareware
version of Variable Conversions. This version provides
conversion of variables from only some of the many conversion
groups. The shareware version of Variable Conversions is
free of charge. The second version of Variable Conversions
is the full version. This version provides conversion of
variables from all of the conversion groups listed in the
convert menu of the application. This version must be
purchased by the user. Ordering information to obtain a full
version of Variable Conversions may be found in the file
"Order.txt".

Follow the instructions in the following sections to install
Variable Conversions. Try an automatic installation before
a manual installation. In 95% of user configurations this
installation will proceed without error. If an error results,
consult Section 4 for a complete explanation of the error. If
the error occured late in the installation, most of the
manual installation procedure may be skipped.

Once installation is complete, the user may read the "User's
Manual" that is installed with Variable Conversions. Simply
double-click on this icon to open up the manual in Microsoft
Write.

Section 3 - Instructions for Automatic Installation

Before installing Variable Conversions automatically, ensure
that the drive to which Variable Conversions is to be copied
has at least 500 K bytes of free space. If there is not
500 K bytes of free space on this drive, the automatic install
will fail. Also ensure that Microsoft Windows Program Manager
is the windows shell that is being run on your system. This
is the shell that is supplied with windows. If you have
installed another shell, the automatic installation will fail.
Finally, ensure that windows is running in "Protected Mode".
This is the default setting for windows.

If all of the criteria stipulated in the above paragraph is
met, an automatic installation may be accomplished. To
start an automatic installation, select run from the File
menu in windows Program Manager. The "Run" dialog box appears.
Enter x:\yy\install.exe into the "Command Line" where "x:\yy"
is the path where Variable Conversion files are presently
located. The directory yy will automatically be created if it
does not already exist. As an alternative to entering the
command line manually, select the "Browse" button, then
double-click on the file install.exe when it is found in the
"Browse" dialog box. Next, choose the "Ok" button in the "Run"
dialog box. The installation program begins execution.
The user is asked to provide a path to where program files are
to be copied. If the directory given in the path already
exists, the user will be given the oppourtunity to select an
alternative directory. If no errors result, the installation
process will continue until complete. Some of the errors that
may result are recoverable. (i.e. write protection on
destination disk. - Remove write protection and retry) Other
errors may not be recoverable. If an unrecoverable error
occurs, a manual installation will have to be performed.
The following section explains all errors that may occur during
an automatic installation and what to do about these errors.

______________________________________________________________
Section 4 - Explanation of Errors

The following section describes errors that may occur during
an automatic installation of Variable Conversions, and actions
to take after these errors result.

"Could Not Access Disk"
This error is encountered if there is a hardware problem. It
may occur if the drive entered within the path specified by
the user as a destination for program files does not exist.
Attempt to fix the hardware problem and perform an automatic
installation again.

Press the "Ok" button and free up conventional memory, or
perform a manual installation starting at Part A.

"Error Writing to File - Not Enough Disk Space"

the program files that are to be copied there. In the case
of Variable Conversions, at least 500 K bytes must be free.
Free up disk space on the drive where program files are to
be copied, and perform an automatic installation again.

"Given Path Not Found"
If the destination path for program files given by the user
is invalid, this error is encountered. (i.e. Path given is
C:\Dir1\Vcon and directory Vcon could not be created because
Dir1 does not exist.) Press "Ok" and re-enter a valid path.

"Installation Aborted!"
An unrecoverable error has occured. The installation program

that are to be copied there. In the case of Variable
Conversions, at least 500 K bytes must be free. Free up
disk space on the drive where program files are to be copied,
and perform an automatic installation again.

"Syntax Error"
When entering a path and directory where program files are to
be copied, the user made a syntax error. Ensure that a full

drive letter, the second charactor must be a colon (:), and
the third charactor must be a backslash (\). (i.e. D:\YOURDIR)
Press the "Ok" button and re-enter the path and directory
again.

installation to work. Press "Ok", place windows into
protected mode, and restart automatic installation, or press
"Ok" and perform a manual installation starting at Part B.

"Write Protection Not Removed"
If the destination disk for program files is write protected,
windows prompts the user to remove write protection with a
system error dialog box. The user may remove write
protection press a "Retry" button, or simply press "Close".
If the user presses "Close" then this error is displayed.
After pressing "Ok" in this dialog box, the automatic
installation is automatically stopped. The user may
attempt an automatic installation after the write protection
from the destination disk.

"Unable To Connect To Program Manager Using DDE"
This is a un-recoverable error. Perform a manual installation
starting at Part B.

"Unable To Initialize DDE Communication"
This is a un-recoverable error. Perform a manual installation
starting at Part B.

Section 5 - Instructions for Manual Installation

Manual installation is to be performed if the system onto
which Variable Conversions does not meet the specifications
outlined in Section 3 of this document, or if an error occurs
when an automatic installation is attempted. Manual
installation can be divided into 2 parts. Part A describes
the copying of files from the source disk (supplied to the user)
to the destination disk. Part B describes the setting up of
windows program manager for Variable Conversions. If a windows
shell other than program manager is used by the user, then
the user should refference information provided for that shell
to complete addition of Variable Conversions to it.

Part A - Copying Files

1. The user must determine where the program is to
permenently reside in there system. (Target Directory)
If nessesary, they may create a directory especially
for Variable Conversions using the DOS command mkdir
"Directory" where "Directory" is the name of the
	directory to create.

e.g. #1 Create a directory called "CONVERT" in the
	root directory of drive C:

At the prompt C:\ type mkdir CONVERT <enter>

	e.g. #2 Create a directory called "VAR_CON" in the
windows directory that is on drive D:

At the prompt D:\WINDOWS type mkdir VAR_CON <enter>

2. Next, all Variable Conversion files must be copied to
the target directory determined in #1. The file names
that must be copied to the target directory are:

	iso_con.exe Main executable file
	readme.txt Starting point info file.
order.txt Order Form for future orders.
	manual.wri User's Manual.

Copy each of these files individually using the DOS
	command copy "Source_File" "Destination_Path" where
"Source_File" is one of the 4 files listed above, and
"Destination_Path" is the path including the target
	directory.

e.g. #1 Copy files from the source drive A: to the
	target drive C:\CONVERT.

At the prompt A:\ type copy ISO_CON.EXE C:\CONVERT
	then <enter>

Repeat for the other 3 files.

e.g. #2 Copy files from the source drive B: to the
	target drive D:\WINDOWS.

At the prompt B:\ type copy ISO_CON.EXE D:\WINDOWS
	then <enter>.

Repeat for the other 3 files.
