Purpose:

News Rover automatically scans Usenet newsgroups, downloads messages
and/or files that match selection criteria, decodes binary attachments
and stores the messages for later access. When the user is ready to
read the messages and view the files, they are available on the local
system for instant access.

A user of News Rover defines one or more "Interest Groups" that specify
Include and Exclude search expressions, a list of Usenet newsgroups to
be scanned, and other selection criteria such as minimum/maximum message
size, and whether only messages with attached files should be selected.
News Rover may then be left running unattended while it scans for
appropriate messages, downloads them and decodes the file attachments.

News Rover decodes both MIME and UUencoded file attachments. It also
recombines binary files that are posted as multi-part messages -- even
if the parts are posted at different times and are found on different
news servers.

News Rover features a "Picture Gallery" that displays thumbnail size
images of JPG pictures that it has retrieved. When a thumbnail image is
clicked, the full-size picture is displayed. News Rover supports
user-defined "Filing Cabinets" for categorizing and storing the images.

News Rover keeps track of which messages and files have been downloaded
and does not download duplicate copies.

The Include and Exclude search expressions may be complex and use the
AND, OR, NEAR and NOT operators with parentheses. Exclude expressions
are useful for eliminating "spam" messages. Messages posted by
particular senders and/or particular sites may also be blocked.

News Rover supports up to 4 news servers. If more than one server is
specified, a priority can be assigned to the servers to control the
order in which they are scanned. News Rover has an automatic dialing
feature, so it will dial each server if they have different access
numbers. It will also redial and reconnect automatically if the
connection is interrupted.

In addition to receiving Usenet messages, News Rover can be used to post
Usenet messages and send private SMTP e-mail messages. News Rover also
supports the POP protocol for receiving e-mail messages. News Rover
supports anonymous remailers and "nym" servers for posting anonymous
messages.

News Rover is a multi-threaded application so messages can be read and
pictures viewed while it is scanning and collecting additional messages.
