** About WebPhone **

The NetSpeak WebPhone is a software application designed to offer
all the features of a business telephone system while functioning
over TCP/IP networks, including the Internet, local area networks
(LANs), and wide area networks (WANs). Audio is recorded, compressed,
and transmitted over the Internet, or any IP-based LAN or WAN.
Audio is real-time through the use of compression algorithms.

Features such as full-motion video, conference calling, voice mail,
and text chat add valuable business capabilities.

The WebPhone becomes a powerful tool for internal communications
or Internet-based business when combined with other NetSpeak
application and service products, which offer custom solutions
for business applications. Businesses that have networks connected
to the Internet can use NetSpeak servers to provide call center

Businesses that are not connected to the Internet can use WebPhone

** How the WebPhone Works **

A WebPhone application operating on one personal computer communicates
with one or more WebPhone applications operating on other computers.
You place calls to other WebPhone users by entering information and
selecting buttons on the WebPhone graphical interface. After a call
successfully connects, you can begin talking to other WebPhone users.
As you speak into the microphone connected to your computer, your
WebPhone samples the incoming audio, compresses and encrypts the audio
packets, and then transmits the audio. The remote partys WebPhone
receives the audio packets, decompresses and decrypts the audio data,
and then plays the audio. The remote WebPhone user hears you speaking.
