AUTOFILE - The Document Management Assistant
Excellent software package ...no need to purchase
expensive database and viewing software...every
Windows '95 'B' release is image enabled...this
software will unlock the power of your pc and
turn your standalone or network system into a
fully indexed document archive with no
network user licences to pay.

Unzip this zip file to a directory called AUTOFILE - no other installation
is required. The main program file is AUTOFILE.EXE

WHAT DOES THIS SOFTWARE DO?
==========================
This program is for file naming/directory structure creation using
Windows '95 and long file/directory names, tif image files (industry
standard for document imaging), and now supports all filetypes.

The user takes any number of files that have been allocated unique
file names/numbers and a csv index file (field layout is described in
the table below), and automatically creates a folder hierarchy that renames
the files in the same process using the windows '95 long filename
convention. This disposes of the need to purchase expensive imaging viewing
and database software as the folder structure that is created gives the
user a full user friendly image library that can be easily accessed over
a network without any multi-user licence fee. All images can then be viewed
using 'wang imaging' by associating tif image files with wangimaging,
which is part of the Windows '95 'B' package.

An index CSV file must be present in the same directory as the
AUTOFILE package. The csv file may be named anything as long as the
filename does not exceed 8 characters. Autofile will automatically detect
the CSV file whatever it is named. This CSV file is the file that
contains all of your index data. An example is described below.

The field layout of the index file is as follows:- (can have 3 to 10 fields)

Field 1 Field 2 Field 3 Field 4 Field 5 Field 6
C:\TEST\SUB1\1011933.TIF Site Grays Floor Plan 456908 Rev 01

original csv entry would look like this:-

"C:\TEST\SUB1\1011933.TIF","Site","Grays","Floor Plan","456908","Rev 01"

Field 1 = Original path of image file, including image file name/number
Field 2 = Folder name
Field 3 = Sub folder name
Field 4 = Sub folder name
Field 5 = Sub folder name
Field 6 = Long file name

Result = a folder hierarchy thus:-

C:\SITE\GRAYS\FLOOR PLAN\456908\REV 01.TIF

View and Search your document archive using Windows Explorer...the
interface that you are all familiar with...access your data across
networks at no extra cost...

Summary - step by step guide to using this software

(1) click menu item 1 to create a database file of the paths of
    your tif image files.
(2) Open c:\autofile\TIFPATHS.CSV using Microsoft Excel, menu item 2.
(3) Add indexing information in the fields after the path/image.
(you can use up to 8 directory levels (10 fields in total) -
the last field must always be the long filename that you wish
to use for the tif image:- do not type the file extension).
(4) Save the finished Excel spreadsheet as c:\autofile\tifpaths.CSV
    (comma, separated, variable) file.
(5) Click menu item 3 to convert TIFPATHS.CSV to be compatible with
AUTOFILE (Excel changes the format and so needs to be reformatted
    for use with Autofile).
(6) Click menu item 4 to check the error log. This will tell you if your
index information contains any illegal characters.
(6) Click menu item 5 to create the batch processing commands.
(7) Click menu item 6 to create the folder hierarchy and copy and rename your files into a long filename hierarchy.
(8) Indexing is now complete.
(9) Search and viewing using Windows Explorer and Wang Imaging.

This demonstration program may be freely distributed as long as all the
files remain intact and as is within the zip file. The software is NOT
Freeware. The demo download will only process up to 20 indexes from
the csv file that you create. The full version can process an
infinite number of indexes. This is a commercial product and is only

AUTOFILE requires that the csv data file must have each field enclosed
by quotation marks. Some packages do not allow the user to export data in
this format. If this is the case with the software you use to create the
csv file, use " 3. CONVERT CSV FILE" to reformat the csv file.
The steps 1 to 6 shown on the menu MUST be followed.
Do not attempt to skip a stage as your data will not have been
formatted correctly unless all 6 steps have been processed in sequence.
