TRX Version 3.5 for Windows 95/98 (Unregistered) Notes

Installation
Do not uninstall TRX v2.xx before installing this version, or you will lose

To install TRX v3.5 under Windows run the SETUP.EXE. SETUP will install

Hardware Requirements
TRX requires a PC running Windows 95 or higher, a VGA or better graphics
adaptor, and a mouse.

How to Start the Program
Start the program by double clicking on the TRX for Windows icon. Once
started, you can get help on using the program by clicking the Help menu
item. The program also has context-sensitive help that displays help on the
topic you are using. If you want help on a particular menu command, just
highlight the command and press the F1 key.

Using the Sample Data
The program comes with an extensive set of sample data which will be installed
automatically when you install the program. To access the sample data, check
the Default | Use Sample Data menu item. (It's found under the Default
menu item.) When you're finished with the sample data, you can uncheck
the Use Sample Data menu item to return to your real data.

The first time you use the program, you may wish to set some of the default
menu items. Most of the graph and report configurations are set using the
Default menu item commands. A suggestion for best viewing the sample data
is to use the following settings:

Date - Use the current date and check all 3 boxes.
Date Format - either one is fine.
Report Dates - 12/31/97 and current date, and check the box.
Plot Dates - 1/1/94 and current date, and check the box.
Tax Rates - 28, 20, and 28 are current marginal FEDERAL tax rates. You
may wish to add your effective marginal state tax rates to these.
Plot Min/Max - Any values in boxes, and uncheck the checkbox.
Plot Interval - 7 days.
Export Format - either value.
Import Format - You'll need to set this according the source of your
price data. See the online help for this by pressing the F1 key while
  this window is open.
Include Checking Accts - Uncheck this.
Use Volumes - Check this.
Use Sample Data - Check this to use the sample data provided.
Cap Gain Holding Period - Use 18 months, the current value.
Graph Options - Use the dates 1/1/94 and the current date, check all the
boxes, and use 120 day average.

Using the Word Templates
Three MS Word 8.0 template files - alloc.dot, portfol.dot, and summary.dot -
can be used to format reports generated in TRX and copied to the Windows
clipboard. After installing the program, copy the template files to the
MS Word template directory. Then, just copy the corresponding TRX report to
the clipboard and in MS Word open the appropriate template file and paste the
data from the clipboard. You can create your own templates as well.

You can also use TRX Automation Controller capabilities to directly access
either MS Word or MS Excel and display data in either of these programs
directly.

Uninstalling the program
In Windows 95 click the My Computer icon on your desktop. Next click the
Control Panel icon, and finally the Add/Remove Programs Icon. Locate the
listing for TRX for Windows 32-bit and highlight it. Finally, click the
Add/Remove button to begin removing the program. The uninstall will remove
the program and associated files, the sample data, but not any real data
you have created.

In Windows NT, click the Uninstall icon.

Trouble Shooting

- EInOutError -
If you have used TRX v2.xx and have deleted the directories where the
program and data were located but did not use the uninstall program,
you may cause an error in TRX v3.5 on starting the program. The program
will generate an error message about an EInOutError. To correct this,
open a DOS window and using the DOS edit routine, edit the file trx.ini.
If you prefer, start Notepad and edit the file c:\windows\trx.ini. Then
delete the lines beginning with...

trxpath=.....
datapath=....
realdatapath=...
sampledatapath=...

Save the file, then restart TRX, and it should start normally.

- Index Errors -
If you get an error about indexes or an error having the name
EDBEngineError, then the likely cause is corruption of index
files. You can fix this by manually erasing the index files.
To do this, using Windows Explorer and go to the directory
c:\Program Files\Advisex Software\TRX for Windows 32-bit\data.
Erase all files not ending with .DB. If you have installed TRX v3.5
over TRX v2.xx, then your data will be in the original location, which,
unless you chose another location is c:\trxwin\data. Restart TRX, and
it will generate new index files and should operate correctly.

Other Issues
Different screen drivers can cause the appearance of TRX to be different.
We have tried to eliminate problems this might cause to the extent we can.
However, if you have a problem with the appearance of the windows in the
program (buttons off the form, for example, or very lopsided-looking
forms with all the buttons on one side, or overlapping elements), let us
know by sending an email to the address below.
