                    SIMULATION KIT INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

(0) PACKAGE INFORMATION

(a) The Simulation Kit is written by:

    Marcus Karolewski (karolewski@alum.mit.edu)
    Nanyang Technological University, Singapore

(b) The Simulation Kit is released by the author into the public
domain. (That means anyone can copy and distribute it freely).

(c) The Simulation Kit is a package of programs which models
atomic collisions in crystalline solids.

(1) INSTALLATION

This version of the Simulation Kit requires Windows 95 to run.

To install the Simulation Kit, run the batch file INSTALL.BAT.
This will decompress the archive file and create the necessary
directory structure below the current directory. (You need to
have the program PKUNZIP installed in your system.)

INSTALL.BAT executes the command:

pkunzip -d sk22.zip

This will only work if PKUNZIP is located in a directory on your
system's PATH statement. If not, you can install the Simulation Kit
by inputting the path as well e.g.

c:\utils\pkunzip -d sk22.zip

Make sure you don't forget the "-d" switch: otherwise, the archive files
will all be unpacked in the current directory, which will be messy.

(2) UNINSTALLING THE SIMULATION KIT

To uninstall the Simulation Kit, simply delete the installation
directory (SK22) using the Dos command:

deltree SK22

The Simulation Kit installation does not modify the Windows 95 registry,
nor does it write any files to the Windows system directories.

(3) RUNNING THE PROGRAMS

It is not necessary, in general, to install the Simulation Kit to the
default directory (\SK22\BIN). However, the help files (*.HLP, *.CNT)
should reside in the same directory as the executables.

There is no need to add the Simulation Kit directory to the PATH
statement in your autoexec file if you launch the programs from the
Windows 95 environment. There are many ways to do this:

(1) Click on the program icon in Windows Explorer, or:
(2) Drag the program icon from Windows Explorer, and place it on the
Windows desktop; double-click to execute, or:
(3) Click the Start button, then the Run option, or:
(4) Click the Start button, then select the Settings|Taskbar option
to install the program as a menu selection.

To launch from the Dos environment:
(1) If the Simulation Kit directory is on your PATH statement you
can simply type the program name (e.g. 'spider22').
(2) Otherwise you will have to change to the program directory
before you type the program name.

The Simulation Kit does not use long filenames. It can be run from
a compressed drive.
