                         Welcome to Fire Door!
                        =======================

Intended for use in the small office or school environment, Fire Door allows a
single Internet connection to be used by many people simultaneously. Dialup
connections are fully supported with features such as:

     * Automatic dialling and connection on demand
     * Detection of unused connections with automatic hangup

Fire Door fully supports all common Internet protocols, including:

     *      World Wide Web
     *      Web Caching
     *      Telnet
     *      File Transfer Procotol (FTP)
     * Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP)
     * POP Version 3 (Post Office Protocol)
     *      Real Audio
     *      VDO Live
     *      SOCKS 4 and 5.

Fire Door allows you to protect your network from unwanted or unintentional
intrusions, even whilst connected to the Internet. Extensive security features
allow system administrators to control access to external sites as well as
disabling access to any or local machines. Best of all, Fire Door can be
configured via its builtin Web interface from any machine with a Web browser.

Fire Door currently runs on Windows/NT version 3.5x or 4.0 for Intel processors, the
Linux (Unix) operating system for Intel and Solaris 2.5 for Sparc processor. Other
operating systems and processors may become available as time goes on.

                            Installation Procedure
                           ========================

The best place for additional installation and configuration information is
our web site, in particular:

          http://www.equival.com/firedoor/setup.html
or
          http://www.equival.com.au/firedoor/setup.html

The following is a brief summary, to get you going quickly.

Prerequisites:
---------------

It is assumed that the following have already been installed:

  . TCP/IP.
  . Remote Access Service.
  . A web browser, e.g. Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer.

Procedure
----------

  1. As you are reading this you probably have already done the first
	set using the install program to load the files.

  2. At this point you may either run Fire Door as a normal application,
	in a window for a quick demo. Use the Quick Demo icon in the Start
	Menu group created by the installer to do this and go to step 5,
	or you may simply install Fire Door to auto-start as a background
	service as in step 3.

  3.	To install Fire Door so it will automatically run every time you
	restart your system, use the Install Fire Door Service icon. This
	will install the Fire Door service into the system registry. The
	window that is displayed indicates the result of the operation
	and may be closed straight away.

  4. To start the background service, use The Start Fire Door Service
	icon. The window that is displayed indicates the result of the
	operation and may be closed straight away.

  5. To access Fire Door for the final stage of setup, you may use the
	Fire Door Home Page icon in the Fire Door Start menu group. Or you
	may start a Web browser on any machine on the Local Area Network
	and enter the URL:

                              http://hostname:1082

        Where "hostname" is the name or IP number of the machine that is
	running Fire Door. This should bring up the Fire Door Home Page with
        the logo and hyperlinks to online help and configuration pages.

  6. You may then proceed with the First Time FireDoor setup wizard. This
	will ask a series of questions to set up Fire Door on your network.

  7. Most importantly - PLEASE REGISTER YOUR COPY OF FIREDOOR! Not only will
        it allow you to use FireDoor with more than one user, but the money will
        help us improve the product even further. We will keep you informed
        of new versions of FireDoor via email, and please check our 'Web
        Home Page for information on other Equivalence products.

Known Problems
---------------

Upgrading from version 1.3 to version 1.4 is not reversable. Internal
registry data is automatically converted to a new format for v1.4. This
means that v1.3 will lose many of its configuration parameters.

If you have a "Server reset" error at the end of the wizard, simply try to
finish again. This only appears to happen with Internet Explorer 3.02 and
not with Netscape or Internet Explorer 4. We will continue to analyse the
problem and provide a fix in a later beta.
