NameDropper 1.0

NameDropper is a program that is designed to rename batches of files at a time
instead of singly. NameDropper is particularly adept at numbering a quantity of files for you. It is great for both people who download large quantities of files and also for people who run web sites and wish to have consistent and organized file names.

USAGE:

Definition: A file extension is the last characters of a file name separated from the rest of the file name by a period. The file extension generally describes the type of file. Common file extensions for pictures are .jpg, .gif, .bmp. Common file extensions for sounds are .wav, .mid, .mp3. Other common
extensions include .txt, .zip, .doc, .avi, .qt, .dll and so on.

After changing to the drive and directory where the files you want to rename are
located, select as many files as you want to rename and select one of the following renaming options.

*********************
** Name and Number **
*********************

This will sequentially number all selected files. The number can be added to
the current file name or to a completly new file name. NameDropper automatically adds zeroes to the number to match the total numbers of selected
files. For example, if numbering 100 files the first number added will be 001, not 1. This helps when taking directories, and aesthetically.

NOTE: The file name extension is not affected by name and number.

Numbering Options
*****************
The start number is the number from which NameDropper will begin sequencing.

The number position determines if NameDropper adds the number before or after
the file name.

Numbers can be separated from the file name by spaces or a custom separator such as dashes, underscores, or anything one chooses. By default, NameDropper adds
the separator in a logical fashion, after the number when the number proceeds
the file name, and vice versa. However, if the separate on both sides box is
checked the separator will be placed before and after the number. This is
useful because NameDropper can insert the number into the middle of a file and
also can add text to the number.

The Optional Text is user-defined text that will accompany the number when
renaming the files. The text can be placed before or after the number as
selected.

The remove all numbers before numbering box will remove any numbers in the file
name prior to affixing a new number. This is useful if you want to keep the old
file names but not the way they were numbered.

Fully Rename File
*****************
If you choose to fully rename the file, the new filename for all the files will
be whatever is entered in the new file name box, along with a sequential number.

Append File Name
****************
If you choose to append the file name the original file name is retained and a
number is added to this file name. One can optionally choose text that is common to all of the file names where the number will be placed. The number can be placed before or after this common text that is found in the file name.
If the text is not found, a number will not be added to the file name.

********************
** Case and Space **
********************

This option changes the capitalization and spacing of the files selected.
The file extension is only affected by the uppercase and lowercase options.

Change Case
***********
This changes the capitalization of file names. One can change the file names to all uppercase characters or all lowercase letters. In addition, one can capitalize the first letter of separated words in a file name.

Change Space
************
This changes the spacing of filenames.

Spaces can be added between capital letters in a file name. NameDropper will
only add spaces between capital letters and lowercase letters. What this means is that MyDVDandCDCollection.txt will become My DVD and CD Collection.txt, not
My D V D and C D Collection.txt.

If the and numbers box is checked the files will have spaces added between numbers and text as well.

Remove spaces will remove all spaces from the file name with no discrimination.

The remove spaces and capitalize option will remove spaces between words in a
file name and capitalize the first letter of the words. For example,
random file name.txt will become RandomFileName.txt.

The trim leading and trailing spaces only removes spaces before and after the filename. In other words, only spaces before the first character of a file name and after the last character in a file name are removed.

Reducing spacing to single spacing will change any occurence of two or more adjacent spaces to a single space. So, random file name.txt becomes
random file name.txt.

***************************
** Add Text To File Name **
***************************

This will add selected text to all selected file names. The text can be added
to the beginning or the end of the file name. The text may also be inserted before or after some text common to all the file names. If the common text is not present in the file name, the new text to be added to the file name will not be added.

NOTE: This option does not affect the extension of the file name.

**********************
** Change Extension **
**********************

This option allows the extension of mutiple files to be altered.

NOTE: NameDropper adds the leading . to the extension if one is not provided.

Add Extension
*************
This adds an extension to a file name with multiple options. The options are what NameDropper will do if there already is an extension.

Don't add new will not add an extension if any extension is already present in
the current file name.

The add new extension option will add an extension whether or not the file name
already has an extension. This can lead to mutiple extensions, such as PhoneNumbers.list.doc.

The add new extension is different than old option adds an extension to a file
only if it is different from the old one. So if you add the extension doc
to the file Report.doc it will be unchanged, but if you add doc to the file
Report.98 it becomes Report.98.doc.

Change Extension
****************

Changing the extension replaces the extension of a file name with the new selected extension. If the file name does not have an extension, the new one
is added to it.

Remove Extension
****************

Removes the last extension of a file. Simpsons.wav becomes Simpsons, but Simpsons.Homer.Wav becomes Simpsons.Homer.

*******************************
** Replace Part of File Name **
*******************************

This will remove all occurences of the text in a file name that matches that selected in the replace box with text that is in the replace with box. The
extension is not affected. If the replace text is not in the file name, the
file name is unchanged.

*******************************
** Trim Characters From Name **
*******************************

This removes characters from the beginning, middle or end of a file name.
The number of characters selected is how many characters will be trimmed from the beginning and end of the file name. Also, characters can be trimmed inside of a file name from a start position to an end position. The start position and the end position are both counted from the first character of the file name. Thus to remove -pic- from france-pic-cannes.jpg one would trim from 7 to 11.
