Getting Started

  Introduction
Polymorphic means having base attributes that remain the same and other attributes that
can change. The changeable attributes don't necessarily have to change but if and when
they do, transformation takes place. This transformation process is called polymorphism.
The base type is said to be polymorphic.

The Polymorphic Database is thirty two bit software designed to carry the Microsoft
"Windows 95" label. It has the base attributes of an information management database.
An address book, interactive calendars including communications, appointments, notes,
personal diary, calculator, notepad and dialer. It also contains a secure system of login
and passwords, an Internet browser and other online features. It has changeable attributes
that permit you to shape the information database into whatever meets your needs. That
is why it is called polymorphic. It offers powerful user specified systems of polymorphic
record segregation and retrieval yet still retains simplicity and ease of use. It is fully
ODBC compliant, robust and built to accommodate even industrial usage that spans years
of time.

  Evaluation And Registration
The Polymorphic Database is not free software. We are a small company and selling
software is our main business. We are dedicated to quality and work hard to produce
products that are worthy. We make money the old fashioned way in the modern, high
tech world. We need your support and we do our best to earn it. Subject to the terms of
the license agreement, you may use the Polymorphic Database for evaluation purposes
without charge for a period of thirty days. If you use the Polymorphic Database after the
30 day evaluation period payment of the registration fee is required.
See the Registration Information section on this page to learn more.

  System Requirements
A minimum of an Intel 80486DX microprocessor based Laptop, notebook, IBM PC or
true IBM compatible computer. The Polymorphic Database is 32 bit software specifically
designed to carry the Microsoft "Windows 95" label. It will also run under Microsoft
Windows NT v.4.0. The Polymorphic Database will not install or run on UNIX systems,
on a Macintosh or in the Windows 3.1, Win32s environment.

You should have a minimum of sixteen megabytes of memory and thirty megabytes of
free disk space to complete installation. Additional disk space is used during installation
to decompress and copy the necessary files. After installation the program will occupy
about ten megabytes of disk space. Over time the database will increase in size as records
are added. The Polymorphic Database is robust and built to accommodate even industrial
usage that spans years of time. Under these circumstances the database can grow quite
large.

The Polymorphic Database comes with a built in Internet Browser. It is integrated and
physically a part of the program. Having Internet capabilities requires user and system
Internet capabilities and best results are achieved under these conditions. To accomplish
this the Polymorphic Database uses Microsoft Internet Explorer technology. It is impractical
for us to distribute this program. Therefore it is a prerequisite that you have a recent version
of the Microsoft Internet Explorer installed in your computer. If you do not, download and
install the latest version from Microsoft before using the Polymorphic Database. If you do not
have it installed the Polymorphic Database will still work but the browser feature will not
function.

  Installation Instructions
The Polymorphic Database comes with a built in installation program "setup.exe". You
are encouraged to download but if you receive floppy disks you will find it on disk one.
Download all files into the same directory folder. Decompress any compressed (*.zip)
files and execute "setup.exe". Carefully enter information as directed by the setup
program.

Before installing the Polymorphic Database close all other open, running and system tray
programs. If you are concerned about viruses scan the Polymorphic Database files before
closing your virus shield type program. Running other programs during installation is highly
likely to cause general installation problems or failure to occur.

Installation is a two part process. Part one is running "setup.exe" which decompresses the
archive and copies the files to your system. A directory folder is also created called
"Polymorphic Database". Part two begins when you run the Polymorphic Database for the
first time. Program registry entries are created, the latest Microsoft Data Access Pack is
installed, the data source is configured and the various controls are registered. See the
"Trouble Shooting" section for help solving installation problems.

The installation program will prompt you for a serial number. If you have purchased the
Polymorphic Database enter your license number. If you are a trial user you may enter
anything, your entry will be accepted.

The Polymorphic Database will install the latest Microsoft Data Access Pack the first
time it is run. This system software is required. Unless you know for sure that you
already have it installed choose "Yes" when asked if you want to install it. When offered
the two drivers check boxes the top check box is required and either check it alone or hit
the "Select All" button to install all available drivers. The Polymorphic Database will use
the Microsoft Access ODBC system driver that is installed by this software package.
Once this subsystem is present Polymorphic Database will self configure. You should not
have to do any system data source or any other ODBC configuration.

When you run the Polymorphic Database you will first get the login window. Enter your
login and password and the first time be sure to write them down. You will need them
each time you run the program.

  Network Requirements

The Polymorphic Database is robust and will perform well on Windows NT v.4.0
networks. You may access the database through a network, provided that you comply
with the terms of the license agreement. Additional licensing and client server
configuration are required to share the database over the network. Your network
administrator should easily be able to do the necessary network configuration.

Database Information

  Security
The Polymorphic Database requires a secure login and password to gain entry to the
program. Passwords can be updated and added so others can gain access. The database
and your valuable data are never accessible to outside programs or intruders.

ODBC - Open Data Base Connectivity
ODBC stands for Open Data Base Connectivity. Open Data Base Connectivity is an add
on to your Windows 95 or NT system. Open Database Connectivity application
programming interfaces (APIs) give programmers the ability to write applications that are
independent of any particular database management system (DBMS). ODBC provides an
API that different database vendors implement via ODBC drivers specific to a particular
database management system (DBMS). The Polymorphic Database uses this API. ODBC
is a major part of the Microsoft Windows Open Standards Architecture (WOSA).

  ODBC Administrator
The ODBC Administrator registers and configures the data sources available to you
either locally or across a network.

You will find the ODBC Administrator icon in the Control Panel. The Polymorphic
Database data source name is "WJAPDB." Once the Polymorphic Database is installed,
you can configure the data source using the ODBC Administrator but we do not
recommend that you do this. Changes can produce undesireable results. In most cases no
configuration beyond initial program installation is necessary.

  Polymorphic Database Filters
A database needs to be filtered. This segregates the records and allows for the selection
of only a particular subset of the available records. Filtering of record sets is critical to
the performance of any DBMS. For example, you might want to select only the class
sections for a particular course, such as Math 101. A filter is a search condition and the
search condition constrains the selection of records from the database.

Unique systems of user specified database filters is what makes the Polymorphic
Database polymorphic. Database filters in the form of verb noun phrases can be
implemented throughout. Each main dialog or screen uses its own set of unique user
specified database filters. You will create these sets of filters individually as you see fit.
The individual filters consist of verb noun phrases. It's as easy and natural as spoken
English. You set up and use verb noun phrases that conform to your specific needs. The
Polymorphic Database comes with a few default verb noun database filters already in
place. They are: "Default", "N / A" and "Internet". These are used internally throughout
the program and cannot be altered. "Default" is the default starting filter when no filter
has been selected. "N / A" means turn off filtering and "Internet" is used to add Internet
web sites to the database. Once you see how the Polymorphic Database provides support
for user specified database filters you will find it comes natural to create your own
meaningful system of filters. You are only limited by your own imagination.

What's more is that individual records can be assigned to more than one unique verb
noun phrase database filter at a time. This permits your C.P.A. friend Marys record to
appear when you select the noun C.P.A., when you select the noun friend and and when
you select the noun business. It also similarly includes her record when reports are
printed. You will assign records to these filters individually as you see fit to meet your
specific needs.

Real Estate + Lawyer but mostly those that reflect your specific needs.

To show all verb phrases set the verb phrase to "N / A". To show all noun phrases set the
noun phrase to "N / A". To show all records set both the verb phrase and the noun phrase
to "N / A".

Program Usage

This section details the actual usage of the Polymorphic Database. The various screens,
menus, toolbars etc. and their usage.

Usage Of Verb / Noun Phrase Filters
The Polymorphic Database is based on the usage of user created verb / noun phrase
database filters. This presents new users with three options:

Beginners can ignore database filtering. To ignore database filtering set and leave all
verb / noun combo boxes set to the "N / A" and "Default" entry. This instructs
Polymorphic Database not to filter and to show all entries for verbs and use the
"Default" for nouns.

Choose to filter by noun only. leave all verb combo boxes set to the "N / A" entry.
This instructs Polymorphic Database not to filter by verb. Create and use noun
filters exclusively. This is what most of us do most of the time. It's a nice clean
way to categorize the data and still remember where things are.

Advanced users will need to filter by verb and noun. When you've got large amounts
of data or data that needs constant attention and housekeeping you need to add
verb filters. Polymorphic Database will filter by verb and noun allowing an
additional level of data separation. The various calendar dialogs add another level
by grouping entries into calendar years.

  Adding New Records
Adding records in any of the Calendar dialogs or screens is initiated by pressing the day
of the month button on the calendar. The entry screen will then be displayed. After
entering in the new information press the "OK" button to save it. Adding records to the
Address Book in the Internet Browser is completed by pressing the check mark button.
An Internet Site entry for the current U.R.L. will be created in the Address Book. Later
while in the Address Book you can click the "HTTP://" button to return to the same
U.R.L. Adding records in the Address Book is initiated by pressing the plus button or by
selecting "Add Record" from the File menu. After you have entered in the new
information for the record save your addition in one of two ways.

Press the star / update button or choose the menu selection "Update Record" to
complete the addition or update operation.

If you are adding a new record you may press the "plus" button or select "Add
Record" from the menu. The current record will be added and you can proceed to
enter another new record.

  Editing Existing Records
You may make changes to the individual records as you browse through them. You must
move off the record and onto the next record to save the changes made. If only one
record is present you will not be able to move off the record to update it. In this case
press the star / update button to save the changes made.

Trouble Shooting

  Installation
Many complex things happen during installation and therefore much can potentially go
wrong. See the above section on "Getting Started" and make sure your system meets the
minimum requirements. If you are new to computers please ask someone you know for
assistance. Installation assumes a Windows 95 or NT v.4.0 machine with a clean
minimum configuration present.

  Known Problems

The installation program returns error -115.

It is highly likely that one of four things has occurred:
You have attempted to install to a 16 bit operating system.
You have attempted to install to a root directory folder.
You have other programs running that are interfering with the installation.
You have run out of space on either the source or destination drive. In most cases
the "C" drive.

The Polymorphic Database comes with an Internet Browser built into and fully integrated
with the program. It is physically a part of the Polymorphic Database but it is prerequisite
that you have a recent version of the Microsoft Internet Explorer installed in your
machine. If you do not, download and install the latest version from Microsoft before
using the Polymorphic Database. If you do not have it installed the Polymorphic
Database will still work but the browser feature will not function. The browser part of the
Polymorphic Database relies on dynamic link libraries and other features that are
installed with Microsoft Internet Explorer. This is the first installation step.

  System Compatibility
The Polymorphic Database will not install or run on UNIX systems, on a Macintosh or in
the Windows 3.1, Win32s environment.

  Database Problems
Most database problems that occur are due to the absence of the Microsoft 32 Bit ODBC
subsystem. To verify that it is installed look in the Control Panel to find the 32 bit ODBC
Administrator icon. Open it and verify that the Microsoft Access ODBC system driver is
present. The Polymorphic Database uses the Microsoft Access ODBC system driver that
is installed by the Microsoft Data Access Pack the first time the program is run after

installation.
General ODBC problems. You will need the Microsoft 32 Bit ODBC subsystem and the
Microsoft Access ODBC system driver installed. A wide variety of Windows 95 ODBC
subsystem problems that can cause the Polymorphic Database to fail or produce error
messages after successful installation can be solved in this manner:

  Uninstall the Polymorphic Database

Install: ODBC Drivers For Win95 Applications - execute "dataacc.exe" or
download "WX1350.EXE" Microsoft ODBC drivers installation and setup self
extracting archive for Windows 95 into a directory folder on your machine. The
"dataacc.exe" file is distributed in the Polymorphic Database archive so if you
have the Polymorphic Database you already have this file. You can also obtain
this file from Microsoft as "WX1350.EXE".

  Reinstall the Polymorphic Database
