In 1806, after the "Battle of the Three Emperors" at Austerlitz, Napoleon I commissioned the building of the Arc de Triomphe. It was finished only in 1832.

The "Tomb of the Unknown Soldier" (1921) beneath the arch, was the world's first memorial of its kind.
