CD-ROM Games - Help File ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CONFIG.SYS and MEMORY Some of the game demos on this CD-ROM require your machine to be set up to use Extended or Expanded memory. The EMM386.EXE driver (usually found in the C:\DOS directory of your hard disk) is used to configure it. Other games require a lot of lower (conventional 640Kb) memory and you can gain more by setting the EMM386 driver to use NOEMS. Here are the two main settings for the EMM386 driver - only 1 must be present at any one time: 1) DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE RAM (allows EMS/XMS usage) 2) DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS (provides maximum base memory) Remember that this line should be in your CONFIG.SYS file, and MUST be below any HIMEM.SYS command. If any game fails to run with one of these commands present, swap it for the other. If you find that the game still fails to load, check that the game does not require more memory than your machine has. Most of the demos should function correctly if you have at least 590Kb of free base memory, and 8Mb of RAM. To check the amount of FREE memory on your PC, at the C:\ prompt type: MEM The line: Largest executable program size : xxxKb relates closely to the free base memory. If the figure falls below 590Kb, you should either make a boot disk (refer to your DOS manual about the process for doing this) OR run Microsoft MemMaker utility, which will examine your system and find the best possible alternative setup for your PC. IMPORTANT: IF YOU ARE GOING TO ATTEMPT THIS, MAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR SYSTEM FILES (CONFIG.SYS AND AUTOEXEC.BAT) TO A DISKETTE IN CASE OF A DISASTER FATALE. To run it, just type MEMMAKER at the C:\ prompt and follow the on- screen instructions. *** DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DO THIS FROM WITHIN WINDOWS OR WINDOWS DOS PROMPT ***
