______________________________________________________________________ BETA BUILD 385 VERSION NOTES: COMPUSERVE 3.0.1 FOR WINDOWS 95 AND NT ______________________________________________________________________ Included in this README are some things you should know before you run CompuServe 3.0.1. Please read the section on 'Installing (MS Windows 95 Dial-Up Networking) RAS Dialer under Windows 95' prior to installing CompuServe 3.0.1. This will help you to setup and use the Dial-up Networking functionality that has recently changed. For a highlight of bugs corrected in earlier beta versions of CompuServe 3.0.1, please see the 'Beta_1_9.wri', 'Beta_12.wri', and 'Beta_13.wri' files in the CISBETA Forum, WinCIM library or in the NEWPROD\INFO directory located on NSAAE. If you don't have access to NSAAE, you may attach using the account name 'NEWPROD' and password 'SPRING DAYS'. Follow the path, NSAAE\VOL3\DATA\SHARED\NEWPROD\INFO\ to access the files. ------------ New Toolbar: ------------ Changes have been made to the Toolbar. Please remove the following sections from the CS3.INI file after installation to activate the changes. If you had a custom toolbar, your custom configuration will be reset to the standard toolbar; you will need to customize your toolbar again. [Configuration] Toolbar=... [Toolbar] [Custom-Toolbar-Descriptions] [Custom-Toolbar-Names] ------------------------------------------------- * * NOTE: Internal vs. External Browser: * * ------------------------------------------------- There is new debugging code in this build. If you encounter any errors while launching the internal browser, please write down the error and report it. (This debugging code does not have an impact on size or performance.) --------------------- MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: --------------------- Windows 95: Windows NT (3.5.1 or greater): > 8 Mb RAM (16 recommended) > 16Mb RAM > 15 Mb free hard disk > 15 Mb free hard disk > 486 33 or better processor > 486 33 or better processor > 9600 bps modem (or higher) > 9600 bps modem (or higher) ------------- INSTALLATION: ------------- The current build can be found on NSAAE and NTTUTA on CompuServe's campus LAN. If you don't have access to NSAAE, you may attach using the account name 'NEWPROD' and password 'SPRING DAYS'. Follow the path, NSAAE\VOL3\DATA\SHARED\NEWPROD\30FORWIN, and run SETUP.EXE. If you do not have access to Netware resources, you may install from the NTTUTA server by attaching to \\NTTUTA\Products\Newprod, double click the 30forWin folder and then double click the SETUP.EXE file. You should install CompuServe 3.0.1 to the same directory as your current version of WinCIM if you have one installed. For most people, this is the CSERVE directory. CompuServe 3.0.1 can coexist with WinCIM 2.01 and will share common files (like the address book). If you receive a message indicating 'Read Only File Detected', click on No. Then exit the Install and the dialer. You will then need to start the installation process again. Notice: Windows CSNav 2.0 Alpha Testers - Please do not install CompuServe 3.0.1 in the same directory structure as your alpha version of CompuServe Navigator for Windows Version 2.0 alpha software. The filing cabinet structures of these versions are incompatible, for now. Notice: CIM for OS/2 users - Please do not install CompuServe 3.0.1 in the same directory structure as your CIM OS/2. The filing cabinet structures of these versions are incompatible, for now. ______________________________________________________________________________ Highlight of Corrections made for CompuServe 3.0.1 Beta Build 385 for Windows: ______________________________________________________________________________ Report #: 16473 - Corrected lockup while viewing article. Did GO EBERT and selected "Kingpin" from the Current Movie Reviews. Received "The service name you entered did not match any existing service. You may reenter the service name or do a search for it." CIS: was in the edit field. Selected Cancel and received an "Internal Error" dialog. CS3 was locked up from there. Report #: 15980 - Problem with selecting all mail messages from online mail and then selecting File It has been corrected. Report #: 16333 - File Cabinet was corrupted somehow, user ran FCUTIL and it said it was fixed, but CS3 would never start again. Following message was received "unable to attach to file cabinet'. Tried importing new one, tried deleting .cft files, tried deleting whole works and importing replacement file cabinet. All to no avail. Deleted CS3 and reinstalled, new install same stuff. This problem has been corrected (user could not reproduce). Report #: 16110 - Problem with gocserve.exe not executing CS3 has been corrected. \windows\gocserve.exe fails to load CS3. The splash screen appears along with an hourglass mouse pointer, but that is as far as it gets. User has to Ctrl+Alt+Del to bring up the task manager and [ End Task]. This is easily duplicated buy locating gocserve.exe in Windows Explorer and double clicking on it. Report #: 15876 - Changes to Connection settings will not affect other connection sessions. Two Connections set up to use the LAN; both are set to "Default Winsock" as the Connection Type. User created a new connection session and changed the Connection Type for that new connection to "Dial-up Networking," then switch back to one of the other sessions, the Connection Type stays at "Dial-up Networking" even though they had been set previously to "Default Winsock." Report #: 16402 - Problem with display of windows in Forums has been corrected. User opened up a Forum Notices window that had a scrollbar (IOW, there were more than one pages of text.) Then, opened up another window on top of it, with the scrollbar on the Notices window showing, and clicked on the scrollbar of the Notices window (which was still beneath the second window). The Notices window scrolls, but it doesn't update the text and leaves a portion of the window gray. This applies to the Message Section Description window and File Libraries Description window as well. Report #: 15891, 15799 - Corrected problem with winsock error on first connect attempts. Report #: 16408 - The only way to close the Page drop down box without activating an address is to click on the down arrow. Per Windows standard, Escape should also close the box. This has been corrected. Report #: 15942 - The FC conversion utility uses B for the hotkey for the 1st Browse button and for the Begin button. This has been rectified. Report #: 16199 - FCUTIL32. Filing Cabinet/Repair menu item displays failure message when user tries to run it. This has been corrected. Report #: 16203 - The Read/Unread status icon is now updating properly for online mail messages. From the Search tab of the Mail Center, perform a search of your online messages which results in at least one message being found. Select one of the messages and Open it. Now close the message. The read/unread status icon is not updated for the message. It should change from a black envelope to a red envelope. Report #: 15948 - The read message window has no hotkeys that allow the user to move through the messages. In WinCIM Alt+T would move to the next topic and Next would skip to the next message. But CS3 only has Enter to move through messages a window-full at a time. The only way the arrows can be selected is with the mouse. Implemented hot keys as follows: Previous Topic - Shift-Alt-Left Arrow Next Topic - Shift-Alt-Right arrow Previous Message - Alt-Left Arrow Next Message - Alt-Right Arrow Parent - Alt-Up Arrow Return - Alt-Down Arrow Report #: 15955 - Corrected memory error when reading mail online. Report #: 13223 - There are conditions where the CS3 connect will fail while trying to negotiate B Protocol transport (host/PPP gateway problem). Under these conditions CCT needs to retry the connect w/o hanging up the dialer. This has been corrected. Report #: 15854 - Corrected miscellaneous memory/resource leaks in CCT. Report #: 15894 - Forum, Files, More button, Date search buttons are overlapping (1024x768 and 1280x1024) problem has been corrected. Report #: 16221 - User received the INSO viewer when opening a text file using the HOME desktop File pulldown OPEN option. This problem has been corrected. Report #: 16223 - The full URL in the "Page:" window at the top of the screen cannot be viewed. In 800x600 resolution, this issue has been resolved. Report #: 14202 - Choosing File - Save As when reading a Forum message correctly opens the Save As window to save as a text file. But making the same choice reading email opens the FC File It window instead of the Save As text file window. This issue has been resolved. Report #: 15490 - Once items are moved from the To-Do list (by Process) there's no way to get them back if they fail for whatever reason. A "Try Again Later" button has been added to correct this problem. Report #: 16538 - Open Preferences - Toolbar. Select 'Add Service'. Enter any service desired and select the icon with the 5 (last one). OK. The service is added but the "5" icon does not appear on the toolbar. The old Address Book icon appears instead. This has been corrected. Report #: 16566 - News: View list of articles in a personal folder. Click Delete (or press Alt-D). Confirmation dialog: Do you want to delete articles from folder? Report #: 16607 - CS3 will now display invalid addresses when sending mail. Report #: 15593 - User had two files and one e-mail message in the To-Do list. Process All resulted in the two files being completed successfully. The e-mail said "unable to process" or a similar message. User canceled out of the Progress Indicator dialog to find the To-Do list was empty and the e-mail was gone even though an error dialog had been received and it had not been processed. This problem has been corrected. Report #: 16121 - When deleting mail offline, the same message will be displayed as when deleting mail online..."Delete these messages...." . Report #: 15241 - Sortable lists in Chat will now be sticky. Report #: 16214 - Corrected problem with CS3 crashing when contributing a file to a Forum using either "Send" or "Send Later". You'll find you've lost your place and have to scroll back down in the article. This has been corrected. Report #: 16012 - Corrected problem with modem report being lost after running CS3 using DUN. A tester reports that after closing a connection he likes to check his modem status (USR 33600) by running HyperTerminal and sending an ati6 command to his modem to see the report. He has no problem doing this after using a regular win95 DUN winsock connection to access the web via MSN. However after running CS3 through its DUN connection (created by Express install) when the dialer is closed the ati6 command in HyperTerminal returns nothing but 0s. So it seems CS3 and its DUN is sending some commands to his modem at disconnect that cause a loss of this report. Report #: 16296 - If user has a large number of stories in an ENS folder, user cannot click the down arrow or below the slider to move the slider bar fully to the bottom -- it always sticks just a bit up from the bottom. The last list item always seems to be cut off. The one way to get the slider fully to the bottom is to click on the slider and drag it to the bottom. This has been corrected. Report #: 15699 - In the Mail Center Search tab, the search option "whose sender's name is" will be changed to "whose sender's name contains". Report #: 16962 - Resolved issue with Filing Cabinet conversion crashing CS3 during installation. Report #: 16591 - The background color used to display the body text for the Read Message, Read Forum Message, and Read Article windows will be changed to match the "Window" setting used by an active MLE. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- INSTALLING (MS Windows 95 Dial-Up Networking) RAS DIALER UNDER WINDOWS 95: -------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you install the RAS dialer, you will want to do the following to correct the problem with having phonebook entries corrupted. To Uninstall a program, select Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs. 1. Uninstall CIS PPP 2. Uninstall CompuServe 3.0.1 3. Verify Telephony settings for your modem in Control Panel -> Modem. Install one if it does not exist. 4. If you are running Windows 95 OSR2 (Beta), install Dial Up Networking from OSR2 CD. During CS3 Installation, select Yes to keep existing Dial Up Networking Files when prompted. 5. Reinstall the Dial-Up Scripting (if you had it) 6. Install CompuServe 3.0.1 7. Verify phone number in Dial-Up-Networking under "CS3 Connection" 8. Verify that in Preferences->Connection Settings->Define Advanced that "Use Dial Up Networking", and "CS3 Connection" are properly setup. These problems will be addressed in the next version. ---------------------------- SETTING UP COMPUSERVE 3.0.1: ---------------------------- If you run from a directory where CIS.INI cannot be found, select Setup from the Welcome dialog. The Winsock checkbox is no longer included in the Connection settings. All CS3 connections require PPP and use Winsock. This requirement allows us to provide new built-in multi-tasking support (see the features list)! Dial-Up Networking (DUN) is the default connection method for CompuServe 3.0.1. DUN allows you to connect to CompuServe over your phone lines to establish a TCP/IP connection. To set your phone settings using DUN, select 'Dial-Up Networking' in the 'Winsock Connection Type' drop down; then select the 'Configure Phone...' button to set your preferences. ------------------ RUNNING WITH -LOG: ------------------ To run 3.0.1 with the -log option, click once on the program icon from the desktop. Right click your mouse while pointing to the icon. Select Properties, select Shortcut. At the end of the Target Field type -log. ie. C:\CSERVE\CS3\CS3.EXE -LOG --------------------------- FILING CABINET INFORMATION: --------------------------- Several components of the filing cabinet have been upgraded in this release, with the primary intent to improving reliability and recoverability of the database. For the technically inclined, the filing cabinet consists of three files: FCABINET.CIF, FCABINET.DAT and FOLDERS.DAT. FOLDERS.DAT exists to provide quick access to the folder names list and to make it possible to quickly change folder names. FCABINET.CIF is used (only) to store filing cabinet indexes. FCABINET.DAT is used to store the actual data of your stored messages. FCABINET.CIF and FOLDERS.DAT can generally be reconstructed from FCABINET.DAT. Please note that if you frequently change folder names, recovery of a lost FOLDERS.DAT file may result in messages being stored in folders with the wrong name (probably in a folder with a name matching the original it was placed in.) Also note that right now, the space consumed by deleted records in FCABINET.DAT is never automatically reclaimed. Use FCUTIL32.EXE to do this, selecting the "Recover Wasted Space" menu item. You can also use FCUTIL32.EXE to recover a damaged database. If you find that you are unable to access or add records to your filing cabinet, try "Recover Damaged Database". The filing cabinet format has not changed since the beginning of the beta test; even old databases should be recoverable. The filing cabinet recovery process depends only on the FCABINET.DAT file; if the FOLDERS.DAT or FCABINET.CIF files are missing or damaged, the tool should still work properly. The recovery process normally renames FCABINET.DAT to FCABINET.BAD, and then adds records to a new copy of FCABINET.DAT. Previous versions of FCUTIL32 may have left FCABINET.BAD present in the directory. It may be possible to recover this file by renaming it back to FCABINET.DAT. Recovery is not possible if FCABINET.BAD exists in the FCABINET directory. It is also possible to merge records from multiple databases using FCUTIL32... this may be useful for people who have damaged databases that they previously could not recover, or anyone who keeps CS3 on more than one machine. To do this, follow these steps: 1. Move the files FCABINET.DAT, FOLDERS.DAT and FCABINET.CIF for one of the existing databases to a temporary directory. 2. If necessary, use the database recovery processes to restore the databases to an intact form. Remember, FCABINET.BAD must be renamed to FCABINET.DAT to recover this file. 3. Using the Database->Preferences menu item of FCUTIL32, enter the temporary directory above for the file cabinet directory. 4. Use the Export (menu item may be changed to Extract) menu option to create a 'dump' file (default name is FCAB0000.CFT). You can use the 'Method' button to select records explicitly, or use the default of Full to copy all records. 5. Restore the directory to the normal d:\CSERVE\FCABINET directory in step 3. 6. Use the Import (menu item may be changed to Merge) option to load the FCAB0000.CFT file. At this point, the documents stored in the second filing cabinet should be merged into the current CS3 filing cabinet. --------------------- UPDATE YOUR TOOLTIPS: --------------------- If you are installing CompuServe 3.0.1 over any version older than Beta 4 and your tooltips do not match the icons, you will need to delete the [Toolbar] and [Configuration] sections from the CS3.INI file in the CS3 directory. This will cause the tooltips to be updated when you open CompuServe 3.0.1 the first time after installing. -------------------------- INSO TEXT AND FILE VIEWER: -------------------------- With the INSO text and file viewer you can open files retrieved from the Information Service (Mail, Forums, Display) without their associated application. The following file types are supported: ASCII Text - 8 bit Microsoft Rich Text Format Microsoft Works Microsoft Works Microsoft Windows Write Microsoft Word for Windows Microsoft Word for Windows WordPerfect WordPerfect for Windows Lotus 1-2-3 for Windows Microsoft Excel Microsoft Excel Charts Microsoft Works Lotus 1,2,3 Microsoft Access Borland dBASE Windows Bitmaps CompuServe GIF JPEG Windows Metafile WordPerfect Graphics WordPerfect Additional Graphics ZIP-compatible Archive UU Encoding --------------------------------------- COMPUSERVE 3.0.1 BENEFITS AND FEATURES: --------------------------------------- A complete list of benefits and features can be found under NEWPROD\INFO\BENEFITS.DOC and FEATURES.DOC off NSAAE on CompuServe's campus LAN. If you don't have access to NSAAE, you may attach using the account name 'NEWPROD' and password 'SPRING DAYS'. Then follow the path, NSAAE\VOL3\DATA\SHARED\NEWPROD\INFO, to the Benefits and Features documents. -------------------- SIGNUP INSTRUCTIONS: -------------------- If you would like to test signup, you will need a modem, a registration code, like "TEST-VEN", and a valid credit card number. Signup is built into the CompuServe 3.0.1 program, so in order to activate the Signup dialogs, you may need to do a few things to set it up. The CS3 directory will need to be in an owner directory (typically CSERVE) that doesn't have a CIS.INI file. The easiest way to do this will be to rename the CIS.INI file, run a CS3 session and test Signup, then change the name of the renamed file back to CIS.INI. ------------------- REPORTING PROBLEMS: ------------------- Please be vigilant about reporting any problems or issues that you have with this software. You may report bugs by GOing 'HTTP://QUALITY.COMPUSERVE.COM'. If you encounter an error (i.e. Assertion or GPF), please make sure you record the module name and the line number from the error message and include them in your problem report. ----------------------------- INFOPLEX AND COMPUSERVE MAIL: ----------------------------- To setup InfoPlex: Select Preferences from the Access pulldown menu. Once the Preferences dialog is displayed, press the Shift + Alt + L keys at the same time. The InfoPlex tab will then appear. Click on the InfoPlex tab to enter the IPX address and password, in addition to your own IPX address and password. Special Note on Download of CompuServe Mail & InfoPlex Messages: By default, this version has turned on the option to view mail on the host before retrieving. For new CompuServe users, however, this option will be turned off and all mail will be downloaded to the incoming messages folder when the user chooses Get Mail. If you have "Use InfoPlex for Mail" checked, CS3 will log onto IPX to get your mail if you are currently offline. If you are online then CS3 will get your CIS mail.
