K-Chess Elite Copyright (c) 1992-97 by Rob McDonell, ARK ANGLES All Rights Reserved OVERVIEW K-Chess Elite is a powerful and versatile chess program designed to help you play better. It is ideal for casual players, children learning to play chess, and anyone wanting to improve their game. K-Chess Elite has lots of features to help you play. See the pieces that have been taken, where pieces can move, who can take what, which move the computer recommends, whether checkmate is inevitable, and more. Set the board to a specific layout, rotate it, enlarge it, change the set of pieces, and even add your own comments to a game. Unlimited undo and redo is available, plus move hinting and replay, giving you complete control of the game and allowing alternate strategies to be explored. Print board layouts and move lists. Save games to disk and reload at any time. K-Chess Elite can play with two players, one player against the computer (either black or white), or the computer against itself. Choose from a variety of time restrictions, or none at all. Change the playing strength to suit yourself. There are dozens of options to customise the appearance and operation of the game. There is full keyboard and mouse control, and easy to use button bar, and extensive help. And it plays a good game of chess too! SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS K-Chess Elite comes with both 16 bit and 32 bit versions in the one package. K-Chess Elite 16 requires a PC with 386 or higher processor, 2MB memory, 1MB free disk space, VGA graphics, and running Windows 3.1 or higher or OS/2 Warp 3.0 or higher with Windows. K-Chess Elite 32 requires a PC with 386 or higher processor, 4MB memory, 1.5MB free disk space, VGA graphics, and running Windows 95 or higher or Windows NT. Both programs require graphics resolution of at least 600 x 480 in 16 colours. The textured backgrounds look best in 256 colours or higher. A sound card is required for sound effects. A printer is required to print game listings or board layouts. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS K-Chess Elite must be installed onto a hard disk with at least 1MB of free space (1.5MB under Windows 95 or Windows NT). 1. Put the Installation Disk in drive A:. 2. Select the Run function from the File menu in Program Manager (in Windows 3.1) or the Start button (in Windows 95). 3. Enter "a:setup". 4. Press Enter to begin installation. When requested, enter the drive and/or directory to install the program to, or just press to accept the default. K-Chess Elite is supplied on high density 1.44MB 3.5" diskettes. 5.25" diskettes are available at additional cost. Note: K-Chess Elite is installed by K-Install for Windows, also available as a separate product from ARK ANGLES. K-Install has an extensive range of powerful features for software developers and publishers, and is very easy to set up. See the ARK ANGLES catalogue for details. TROUBLESHOOTING Mcafee Viruscan 3.0 for Windows 95 may cause the setup program to hang. If so, disable Viruscan temporarily, run setup again, then reload Viruscan. Some other programs, particularly anti-virus programs, may also conflict with K-Chess Elite if they are running at the same time. This is due to K-Chess Elite's intensive use of the processor. If K-Chess Elite displays unusual symptoms (such as pieces unable to move to valid positions, a "check" message when the king is not being threatened, or pieces apparently changing colour) then try disabling all other programs that may be running. Also please contact ARK ANGLES with details of the problem.
