I. Installing the Battleground Waterloo Demo -- 1. From Windows, select the File menu (or the Win 95 Start button) and the Run menu item. 2. Enter: d:\bgw_demo\setup Note: If your CD-ROM is different from d:, enter the appropriate letter. 3. Note: you must have Video for Windows Version 1.1 installed on your computer in order to run the Battleground Waterloo videos. II. Getting Started -- To see a fully automated demo, do the following. First launch the demo, using the Battleground Waterloo program item. When prompted, select Automatic A/I for both French and Allied sides. This will play the demo Computer vs. Computer. When the A/I Dialog appears, you may wish to click on Step to advance the A/I manually, or click on Run to have the A/I run without stopping. To halt A/I processing, press the Escape key (or click on the Cancel button) when the A/I dialog appears. To exit the game, halt A/I processing and then select the Exit menu item from the File menu. To try a battle against the computer, select Automatic A/I for one side and Manual mode for the side you wish to play. Here are some tips on how to play: 1. To advance to the next phase, select the Next Phase menu item from the Phase menu, or click on the clock icon in the upper left hand corner of the tool box that appears on the left-hand side of the screen. 2. In the Movement Phase, you can move your units. Select a unit by first clicking on its map hex with the left mouse button. Then either double-click to select the entire stack of units in that hex, or click on one or more units at the bottom of the screen to just select certain ones. You then move the unit (or stack) by clicking with the right mouse button on a hex adjacent to that unit on the map. To change a unit's Formation (to/from Line or Column for infantry; to Limbered for cannons), select the unit, then click on the "eagle" toolbox button. The "S" toolbox button can be used to create skirmishers from infantry units or squadrons from cavalry units. To change a unit's Facing, select it, then click on one of the "curved arrow" toolbox buttons. These buttons will turn the unit clockwise or counterclockwise, or make it do an about-face, as indicated by the direction of the arrow. 3. In the Fire Phases, you can fire on enemy units. Select the unit you wish to fire in the same way you selected it for moving, by clicking on its hex and then clicking on its picture at the bottom of the screen. Select its target by clicking with the right mouse button on a hex containing one or more enemy units. If prompted for a specific target by the Target Dialog, you can select the default simply by clicking on the Ok button. In the Defensive Phase you can use the "square" toolbox button to change infantry to/from Square formation (which is their best defense against cavalry charges). You can also use the "eagle" toolbox button to unlimber cannons at this time. 4. In the Cavalry Charge Phase, you can move your cavalry units (and leaders stacked with them) even if they've already moved in the Movement Phase. The idea here is to move them adjacent to enemy units in order to engage them in melee in the next phase. 5. In the Melee Phase, you can melee against units in hexes adjacent to your units. Select the target hex by clicking on the hex with the right mouse button. Then select your attacking units by first selecting them and then adding them to the melee using the Add to Melee menu item in the Melee Menu. When you are done adding units to the melee, you can resolve the melee by selecting the Resolve Melee menu item in the Melee Menu. III. When in Doubt -- If you are unsure what to do next in any given situation, you can always get the computer to finish the current phase for you by clicking on the A/I button that is located in the lower right-hand corner of the tool box that appears on the left-hand side of the screen.
