============================================================================= README file for SSEYO Koan Web V1.0 and Koan Plugin V1.0 for Netscape 22nd May 1996 ============================================================================= Thankyou for trying out Koan Web V.10 or Koan Plugin V1.0 for Netscape V2.0 We hope you enjoy it/them!! First thing you will need to do is to run one of the self extracting files, identified below. Choose 16 bit versions for Windows 3.1 and 32 bit versions for Windows 95. The self extracting .EXE files are identifiable as follows: KNP1016.EXE - 16 bit Koan Plugin V1.0 for Netscape V2.0 KNP1032.EXE - 32 bit Koan Plugin V1.0 for Netscape V2.0 KWEB1016.EXE - 16 bit Koan Web V1.0 (helper aplication) KWEB1032.EXE - 32 bit Koan Web V1.0 (helper aplication) KNPW1016.EXE - 16 bit Koan Web and Koan Plugin V1.0 for Netscape V2.0 KNPW1032.EXE - 32 bit Koan Web and Koan Plugin V1.0 for Netscape V2.0 ============================================================================= How do I install Koan Web or Koan Plugin? ============================================================================= Setting up the SSEYO Koan Plugin V1.0 for Netscape Navigator V2.0 ***************************************************************** 1.Run SETUP16.EXE or SETUP32.EXE. If not there already, SETUP will create a Netscape Plugins subdirectory under your selected Netscape .EXE directory, and copy the Plugin DLL there. You will need to choose a directory for other supplementary files, and it will copy the Koan Music Engine to the Windows directory. 2.Read and agree to the terms of the Software License. 3.Restart Netscape Navigator 4.Connect to the SSEYO web page and check your setup works. If functioning correctly, you will see the Koan Icon display in the web page as the embedded Koan file is downloaded and launches the Koan Plugin. Music will start to play. Should you experience any difficulties please see below. 5.The first time you connect to a page containing an embedded Koan file, try clicking with the right mouse button on the embedded Koan icon. You will be presented with a menu. You will see a menu allowing you to see information about the Plugin, launching Koan Web (which you will need to have downloaded) and various other options. You can change your MIDI device from the Setup menu item, but if you want to change any of the other default options for the Plugin, including music volume etc. you will need to have Koan Web installed. Note: If your MIDI Output device solely uses the OPL3 chipset (e.g. SB16 and SB16 equivalents) or is one that doesn't support continuous volume controller changes then you should check the Use Koan ADSR checkbox (default). If you have a Wavetable soundcard or one that does support continuous volume controller changes (e.g. AWE32, SCC1, DB50XG, Gravis, NuSound) then leave this box unchecked. 6.Any Problems? 1.Make sure your MIDI Mapper is set-up correctly (refer to the Microsoft online help or, if you also have Koan Web, see its online help) 2.Check that your Setup Options show that the MIDI Output Device points to the MIDI Mapper or your installed soundcard driver. 3.See our webpage for further info/links Setting up SSEYO Koan Web V1.0 as a Helper Application ******************************************************** General Setup +++++++++++++ 1.Run SETUP16.EXE or SETUP32.EXE. You will need to choose a directory for other supplementary files (e.g. the License), and SETUP will copy the Koan Music Engine to the Windows directory. 2.Read and agree to the terms of the Software License. 3.Setup the Windows MIDI Mapper to point to your soundcard. If you are unfamiliar with the MIDI Mapper reference to the Windows online help or also the Koan Web online help. 4.Check that your Koan Setup Options show that the MIDI Output Device selection points to the MIDI Mapper (which should be the default) or your installed soundcard driver. To do this select View Setup from the menu: to get help on the Setup Options dialog press the F1 key. Setting up as a helper application ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Either A) Download a Koan file and set up SSEYO Koan Web as a helper application on the fly 1.Click on a "hotlinked" Koan file to download it. 2.You will get a message saying that it is an Unknown file type and asking you if you want to set up a helper application/pick an application. 3.Click Yes or Pick Application and select SSEYO Koan Web (it will be where you installed it, most likely the KOANWEB directory) as your external viewer. or; B) Setup SSEYO Koan Web as a helper application in advance For Microsoft Internet Explorer, you can use the Explore | Options dialog to associate SSEYO Koan file extensions (SKP, SKD, SKT, MID) with the SSEYO Koan Web program. For Netscape Navigator: 1.Select Options|Preferences|Helpers (pre V2.0) or Options|General Preferences |Helpers (V2.0). 2.Add a new Helper application with MIME type application, and MIME Subtype x-koan and File extensions skp, skd, skt, skm. 3.Under Action, select Launch Application and add SSEYO Koan Web which you will have installed earlier. For other Web Browsers : Refer to the on-line help that came with your Web Browser. ============================================================================= 16 bit/32 bit versions ============================================================================= The 32 bit versions of Koan Web and Koan Plugin now support a multi-threaded composer, which can be enabled through the Setup Dialog (View Setup off the menu). This option enables Koan to keep on composing, even when the graphical user interface is fully engaged by the user. Previously, if the user interface were stopped while waiting for user input, the music could stop being played after the Composer Reaction time (View Setup) had elapsed. If you enable the multi-threading option, and later experience problems with multi-threaded operation, you may of course disable (and later re-enable) this option through the Setup Dialog. The most likely problem with multithreading is that you might experience some lack of smoothness in the played music, when you have a small amount of physical memory available (e.g. less than 16 Megabytes of base physical memory, and / or many applications loaded). If this is the case, simply disable the multithreading option. The 32 bit versions are designed for use only with Windows 95 or later. ============================================================================= World Wide Web ============================================================================= Don't forget you can use SSEYO Koan Web V1.0 or SSEYO Koan Plugin V1.0 for Netscape Navigator V2.0 to play back Koan pieces. Koan Web is also suitable for use as as helper applications for WWW browsers such as Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator or Mosaic. Create your own pieces with SSEYO Koan Pro for use on the web. See our web page for more details (http://www.sseyo.com). ============================================================================= CREATIVE LABS AWE32 ============================================================================= * AWE32 Pitch Intial (View 12) is active when between -8192 an +8191 The Off value is -8193. If you set it to a very high or low value (e.g. -8192) it is possible you will not be able to hear the voice play at all as it will be out of audible range. * If you have the 32-bit version of one of the SSEYO Koan products, and you use a Creative Labs AWE32 card and wish to use SoundFont banks from within Koan ... then the standard Creative Labs file AWEMAN32.DLL must exist somewhere in your system path. Note that this was not the case with very early Windows 95 AWE32 drivers from Creative Labs. If this file is not present on your machine, then contact Creative Labs for the latest driver pack (http://www.creaf.com). ============================================================================= GRAVIS ULTRASOUND (and possibly other patch caching cards): ============================================================================= * Reverb and Chorus are not supported by the Gravis card. ============================================================================= SUPPORT ============================================================================= Sorry, but no support is given for Koan Web, Koan Plugin for Netscape Navigator or the Koan Pro Demo product. ============================================================================= REMEMBER REMEMBER REMEMBER REMEMBER REMEMBER REMEMBER REMEMBER ============================================================================= Remember to check out our Website for new demos!!! "The works I have made with Koan symbolise the beginning of a new era of music. There are now three musical alternatives: live music, recorded music and generative music. Generative music enjoys some of the benefits of both its ancestors. Like live music it is always different. Like recorded music it is free of time-and-place limitations - you can hear it when and where you want. I really think it is possible that our grandchildren will look at us in wonder and say: 'you mean you used to listen to exactly the same thing over and over again?' ". (Brian Eno 1996) Brian Eno is the 1996 BRITs Producer of the Year for Outside by David Bowie, and pioneer of ambient music. Brian Eno's Generative Music 1 was produced with SSEYO Koan Pro. It includes 12 Brian Eno Koan files with SSEYO Koan Plus V1.2 (Win 95/ 3.1 versions) on floppy disk. Requires Creative Labs SB32/AWE32 soundcard. See our website for more details! ============================================================================= Other SSEYO Koan music titles ============================================================================= SSEYO will be launching its next SSEYO Koan music title in July 1996, so watch out.
