ABOUT THIS TRIAL VERSION OF LANTASTIC 7.0 PART II. KEY PRE-INSTALLATION STEPS PART III. OTHER LANTASTIC CONSIDERATIONS ========================================================================= PART I. ABOUT THIS TRIAL VERSION OF LANTASTIC 7.0 ========================================================================= This two-user trial version of LANtastic 7.0 expires 45 days after installation. During the final days of use, you'll see a reminder message each time you start your computer. After expiration, you'll see a continual message that tells you how to purchase the full version of LANtastic 7.0. To disable this message, uninstall the trial version of LANtastic according to the instructions below. To uninstall LANtastic 7.0: - Click Start, Settings, Control Panel. - Double-click Add/Remove Programs. - Click LANtastic 7.0. - Click Add/Remove. - Click OK. ========================================================================= PART II. KEY PRE-INSTALLATION STEPS ========================================================================= Some or all of the following steps may apply to you. Instructions for completing each Key Step begin after the list. Key Step 1. Install your network adapters and cable them together. Key Step 2. Configure your network adapters. Key Step 3. Install an adapter driver. Key Step 4. Remove unneeded network components. Key Step 5. Check your computer requirements. ----------------------------------------------------------------- KEY STEP 1: INSTALL YOUR NETWORK ADAPTERS AND CABLE THEM TOGETHER (This step applies to people who don't already have a network adapter installed in each of their computers). Make sure that each of your computers has a network adapter installed. For detailed instructions, refer to your network adapter documentation. Also check that your computers are connected using network cables. For general guides on how to do this, refer to Appendix A, "Installing Your Network Hardware," in the online manual entitled "Installing and Using the LANtastic 7.0 Trial Version Software." To read this manual, follow the instructions in item 10 in Part III at the end of this Readme file. ------------------------------------------- KEY STEP 2: CONFIGURE YOUR NETWORK ADAPTERS (This step applies to people who have manually installed a Plug and Play adapter or who are using an Artisoft NodeRunner 2000 adapter). No configuration is necessary if your computer has a pre-installed Plug and Play network adapter. However, if you've manually installed a Plug and Play adapter, start Windows 95 to initiate the following configuration process: - Typically Windows 95 will copy a driver for your adapter from the Windows 95 CD-ROM or diskettes. - If Windows 95 doesn't have the necessary driver, you may be instructed to insert the disk that came with your adapter. - After the driver has been copied, click Start, Settings, Control Panel. Then double-click Network and check the list of installed components. The name of your adapter should now appear on the list. Note that an Artisoft NodeRunner Pro adapter appears as "Intel EtherExpress Pro adapter." - If your Windows 95 computer has a NodeRunner 2000 adapter installed, you must run the NRSETUP program and change the mode setting from the default choice of Artisoft to the new setting of NE2000. You'll also need to change its IRQ and I/O address settings, since you'll be asked for these when you install an adapter driver. NRSETUP comes on the diskette that came with your NodeRunner 2000 adapter; you'll also find it on the Arti-Facts BBS (filename NRU1000.EXE). ------------------------------------- KEY STEP 3: INSTALL AN ADAPTER DRIVER (This step applies to anyone who doesn't see the Network Neighborhood icon on their Windows 95 desktop). If the Network Neighborhood icon appears on your Windows 95 desktop, you don't have to perform this step. If, however, you don't see the Network Neighborhood icon, you must install an adapter driver. If you don't do this prior to installation, you'll be asked to do so while you're installing the LANtastic 7.0 software. At the end of the installation, you'll have to go back and remove unneeded network components as described under KEY STEP 4 below. To install an adapter driver prior to installation, click Start, Settings, Control Panel. Double-click Network and check the list of installed components. If your adapter's name APPEARS on the list, select it. (An Artisoft NodeRunner Pro adapter appears as "Intel EtherExpress Pro adapter; any other type of NodeRunner adapter appears as "NE2000 Compatible"). Click the Properties button, then click the Resources tab. Make sure the Interrupt (IRQ) and I/O address ranges match the settings that are actually set on the adapter. If they do, click OK. If they don't, click Configuration Type, then select Basic Configuration 0. Scroll to select the correct settings and click OK. Click OK to close the Network folder, then click Yes to restart your computer. If your adapter's name DOESN'T APPEAR on the list, click Add. At the Select Network Component Type window, click Adapter, then click Add again. At the Select Network adapters window, select your adapter's name from the Manufacturer's list. Now follow the procedures in the paragraph above that begins "If your adapter's name APPEARS...." ---------------------------------------------- KEY STEP 4: REMOVE UNNEEDED NETWORK COMPONENTS (This step applies to almost everyone). Nearly everyone needs to perform this step in order for LANtastic 7.0 to function correctly under Windows 95. The only exception is people who want to connect to Microsoft and/or NetWare servers at the same time they're running LANtastic. If this is your situation, go to item 1 under Part III later in this Readme file. To remove the network components that LANtastic doesn't use, click Start, Settings, Control Panel. Double-click Network. On the Configuration page, look for Client for Microsoft Networks, IPX/SPX-compatible protocol and NetBEUI. If the components listed above DON'T appear on the list, click OK. If the components listed above DO appear on the list, remove them in exactly this order: Client for Microsoft Networks, IPX/SPX-compatible protocol, NetBEUI. Click OK, then click Yes to restart your computer. -------------------------------------------- KEY STEP 5. CHECK YOUR COMPUTER REQUIREMENTS (This step applies to everyone). Make sure that both your computers meet the following minimum system requirement: - 2 IBM or compatible computers, 486 or higher - Network adapter installed in each computer and connected with network cable - 8MB RAM (16MB recommended) - Windows 95 desktop operating system - VGA monitor - Mouse - 6MB available disk space (for LANtastic installation) - Hayes-compatible modem (if modem-sharing will be used) - Dial-up connection to an Internet service provider (ISP) (if Internet-access sharing will be used) This ends Part II of this Readme file. Part III contains information that may or may not be necessary to your successful use of LANtastic. ========================================================================= PART III. OTHER LANTASTIC CONSIDERATIONS ========================================================================= Part III covers these topics: 1. Troubleshooting LANtastic immediately after installation 2. Using the modem-sharing feature 3. Troubleshooting the LANtastic Internet Gateway 4. Making one Windows 95 computer both a modem server and a LANtastic Internet Gateway server 5. Setting up a shared HP JetDirect Printer under Windows 95 6. Restoring the Windows 95 LANtastic Database (LDB) 7. Error messages and their solutions 8. Obtaining updated LANtastic information -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. TROUBLESHOOTING LANTASTIC FOR WINDOWS 95 IMMEDIATELY AFTER INSTALLATION If you want to use the Microsoft Client to connect to Microsoft servers or use the IPX/SPX-compatible protocol to connect to NetWare servers at the same time that you're running LANtastic 7.0, follow the steps below to turn off multicast addressing on each Windows 95 computer. - Right-click the Network Neighborhood icon on your desktop, then click Properties. The Network dialog box appears. - Double-click Artisoft LANtastic NetBIOS on the Configuration page, then click the Advanced tab. A screen listing properties and values appears. - Click Multicast, then scroll through the Values drop-down list box and select Off. - Click OK to return to the Network dialog box. - Click OK and click Yes to restart your computer. Repeat these steps on each Windows 95 computer. ---------------------------------- 2. USING THE MODEM-SHARING FEATURE This section contains five issues (A - E) pertaining to the LANtastic 7.0 modem-sharing feature. A. Checking your modem settings When you install LANtastic 7.0 on a computer that will share its modem (the modem server), LANtastic automatically sets a standard IRQ (Interrupt Request) and I/O (Input/Output) Base address for the COM port the modem is attached to. For example, if the modem is on COM 2, LANtastic will set the IRQ to 3 and the I/O Base address to 2F8. For most modems these default settings will work fine. However, if the modem requires special IRQ or I/O Base settings, you need to change these default settings by following the steps below on the modem server: - On the Manage Servers page in the LANtastic Custom Control Panel, click the Share Modem button. The Manage Shared Modem window appears. - In the Communication Port field, you can either choose Use standard port settings and select a COM port number, or click Specify port settings and type in the correct I/O Base Address and IRQ. B. Error message, server busy or unavailable If you're using more than one protocol (e.g., Artisoft NetBIOS with NetBEUI, or IPX/SPX, or TCP/IP) you might see the error message, "Server is busy or unavailable." To correct this problem, you need to set Artisoft NetBIOS as the default network protocol so that modem sharing will transmit data packets using this protocol under Windows 95. Go to the modem server and client and follow these steps: - Right-click the Network Neighborhood icon on your desktop, then click Properties. The Network dialog box appears. - Double-click Artisoft LANtastic NetBIOS on the Configuration page. - Click the Advanced tab. - At the bottom of this page there's a check box that lets you set this protocol to be the default protocol. Select this check box (make sure it contains a check mark). - Click OK, then click OK again at the Network dialog box to exit. - You must reboot each computer before your changes will take effect. C. Changing the modem name on a server that's sharing its modem If you change the modem name on a server, you must reboot your computer before the new modem name will take effect. D. Understanding the Windows 95 Device Manager and LANtastic modem sharing If you use Windows 95's Device Manager on a Plug and Play computer after installing LANtastic 7.0, you might notice circled exclamation points next to Direct memory access controller and System timer under System devices. Windows 95 will give you a message that there are resource conflicts with these two devices. In fact, there are no resource conflicts. Windows 95 manages LANtastic's virtual COM ports as though they were actual, physical devices. Ignore the exclamation points and conflict messages. E. More information about modem sharing The manual titled Installing and Using the LANtastic 7.0 Trial Version Software contains modem troubleshooting information. Modem-related error messages are included in the LANtastic online Help system. ------------------------------------------------- 3. TROUBLESHOOTING THE LANTASTIC INTERNET GATEWAY This section contains three issues (A - C) pertaining to the LANtastic 7.0 Internet Gateway. A. Server resources don't show up on client In the list of available LANtastic Internet Gateway servers (that you see when using an Internet Gateway client computer), a server may appear to have no available resources from which to choose. If this is the case, first check the server to make sure there are in fact available resources. To do this, go to the server computer and click the server icon in the lower right of the screen to call up the server interface. Then click the Security tab, where available resources are listed. (You may need to click Refresh to see all available resources.) B. Setting RealAudio Player for optimal performance For the RealAudio Player to reproduce sound signals reliably, it must be set to use the TCP protocol with a bandwidth of 14.4 modem speed. To change these settings: - Start the RealAudio Player without a sound file playing. On some systems you can do this by starting the RealAudio Player from the Start tab. On others (for instance, under Microsoft Explorer) you must start the RealAudio Player by starting a sound file, then stop the sound file with the Stop button or wait for the file to finish. - From the View menu, select Preferences. - Click the Network tab. - In the Receive Audio Via field, click TCP. - From the Bandwidth drop-down list, select 14.4 Modem. - Click OK. - Close the RealAudio Player. NOTE: Applications that use the UDP protocol rather than TCP (such as some Voice Internet Chat or some NFS programs) may have problems functioning with the LANtastic Internet Gateway. If an application of this kind has problems, check to see if it has an option to switch to TCP protocol, like the RealAudio Player described above. If it does, select the TCP option. C. A LANtastic Internet Gateway connection terminates on a server When a server logs on to a dial-up Internet connection that's already in progress, the connection may terminate unexpectedly. This happens only if the dial-up connection was initiated by a client computer and all client computers have terminated their individual sessions. When the last client terminates, the server automatically hangs up the connection, regardless of whether a user on the server itself has subsequently logged on to the open connection. After his connection has been terminated, the user at the server will have to close his Internet application and restart it, thus reinitializing the connection. This time the connection won't be unexpectedly terminated, because when the server itself initiates a connection, the problem described above doesn't occur. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. MAKING ONE WINDOWS 95 SERVER BOTH A MODEM SERVER AND A LANTASTIC INTERNET GATEWAY SERVER If you want to set up the same LANtastic 7.0 Windows 95 computer as both a LANtastic Internet Gateway server and a modem server, you must first edit that computer's MSHARE.INI file by following these steps: - Open a DOS box by clicking Start, Programs, MS-DOS Prompt. - At the DOS prompt, change to the hard drive on which your LANtastic directory resides, then change to the WIN95 directory. By default, this path would be C:\LANTASTI\WIN95. - Type EDIT MSHARE.INI . - Go down to the [SESSIONPARMS] section, and make sure that both the QUEUE and RETRY lines are set to N (for No), like this: QUEUE=N RETRY=N - From the File menu, select Exit and Yes to save your changes. - Restart Windows 95 to make this change take effect. ------------------------------------------------------------ 5. SETTING UP A SHARED HP JETDIRECT PRINTER UNDER WINDOWS 95 Computers running LANtastic for Windows 95 can share an HP JetDirect printer, but not through LANtastic. If you do use LANtastic, the printer won't appear as a resource on the Available Printers list in the Share Drives and Printers window. However, each Windows 95 client computer can still use the printer by installing HP Services in the Windows 95 Network Control Panel. Refer to your HP documentation for detailed instructions. LANtastic 7.0 supports HP JetDirect printer sharing under the Windows 3.x and DOS platforms. See the LANtastic Installation and Setup Manual for instructions on adding the printer to your network. ---------------------------------------------- 6. RESTORING THE WINDOWS 95 LANTASTIC DATABASE If you have problems creating and/or modifying accounts and resources under LANtastic 7.0 for Windows 95, your server's LANtastic Database (LDB) may be damaged. The LDB contains all of a server's settings, including accounts and resources. First try to restore the LDB by using the Archive Configuration button as described in the online Help. If you don't have a backup of the LDB or you're unable to access the LANtastic Custom Control Panel, follow these steps: NOTE: This procedure will restore the defaults and completely remove any customized server settings. - Restart your computer in MS-DOS mode (click Start, Shut Down, and from the menu that appears select Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode). - At the DOS prompt, type: CD \LANTASTI\WIN95\INSTALL COPY LDB*. \LANTASTI\WIN95\LDB_DATA Y (to overwrite the old LDB files) - Restart your computer by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del. ------------------------------------- 7. ERROR MESSAGES AND THEIR SOLUTIONS Commonly received error messages are documented in the LANtastic Help files. However, the following two error messages (A - B) don't appear in the Help system. A. "Cannot locate network computer name or resource." If you receive this error when expanding the Entire Network tree in either the Assign Drives, Assign Printers or LANtastic Connections window - OR when expanding the Microsoft network tree in the Browse Network window - it means one of two things. Either: - The Client for Microsoft networks is installed but no Microsoft servers in your workgroups are available on the network at this time. OR - The Client for Microsoft networks is installed but your workgroup name doesn't match the workgroup name for the Microsoft servers on the network. The solution is to remove the Client for Microsoft networks OR correct your workgroup name. To perform either task, right-click the Network Neighborhood icon on your desktop, then select Properties. B. "The network is not present or not started." If you receive this error when expanding the Entire Network tree in the Assign Drives, Assign Printers or LANtastic Connections windows - OR when expanding the NetWare network tree in the Browse Network window - it means the Client for NetWare networks is installed but no NetWare servers are available on the network at this time. The solution is to either remove the Client for NetWare networks OR install a NetWare server on one of your computers. To perform either task, right-click the Network Neighborhood icon on your desktop, then select Properties. ------------------------------------------ 8.
