                           Programmer's File Editor
                              Third Beta Release

The files that make up this beta release of PFE are:

readme.txt General release notes
changes.txt Summary of changes made
files.txt This file

pfe.exe The Windows 3.1 executable
pfe.hlp The help file for the Windows 3.1 and Windows/NT
                         versions
$pfedos.exe A support module that handles running compilers, etc
                         for the Windows 3.1 version
$pfedos.pif The PIF file for this module
pfe32.exe The Windows/NT executable for i386 systems (see notes
                         in the file readme.txt)

printmap.exe A diagnostic DOS program that prints out saved key
                         mapping files
ddetest.exe A Visual Basic program that you can use to test PFE's
DDE facilities (and also use on any other application)

To run the Windows 3.1 version:

Place pfe.exe, pfe.hlp, $pfedos.exe and $pfedos.pif in the same directory,
which ideally should be on your PATH. If you want PFE to run DOS commands
by default in a window rather than full-screen, use the PIF editor to change
 $pfedos.pif appropriately

To run the Windows/NT version:

Place pfe32.exe and pfe.hlp in the same directory

You don't need to put the printmap.exe or ddetest.exe files on your hard disk

If you set up your own key mappings, PFE will save them by default in files
called pfe.key in your Windows directory. It will also set up an initialisation
file called pfe.ini, also in your Windows directory.

Please read the development log changes.txt for a list of what has altered; in
particular, *.key files saved by the beta 1 release will not be recognised by this
version.
