Welcome to the on line manual for the File Logger program
by SK[U]M Ent.

In order to keep the cost of producing this program low,
as it is offered at a very low price, I have only included
a manual on line. As well, you can view, or print, the
manual at any time by using the MSWindows 3.1 Notepad (that
is where it was written).

You will find it in the file logger directory as the file
>> _FILELOG.TXT.

[INTRODUCTION]
The file logger program is basically a
small program designed to assist someone
in the task of keeping track of their
physical files. I have made it a very
simple program, allowing for only three
areas of information to be input.

			[1] The file name
			[2] Some brief information about
			    the file (location, number etc)
[3] The contents of the file

These fields, as well as the input date
generated by the system, is all that is
		contained within the record.

Hopefully the File Logger program will be
able to assist in keeping track of those
loose file folders by giving some needed
information without having to retreive and
		open the physical folder itself.

Now, each file that you create with the
File Logger program can hold !!only!! 100
records. As I found that the usual file
drawer held somewhere between 33 and 57
files, I felt this was a fair amount.

As well, please note that the files are
written in ASCII text format, and can be
viewed at in the NSWindows Notepad. If you
do this, please note that there are some
"record marks" required by the program
		that !!CANNOT!! be removed....

			[1] The record mark - >>>>>>RM
			[2] First log mark - <<<<<<LM
			[3] Second log mark - <<<<<<LM1
			[4] End record mark - ++++++END

If any of these marks are removed or they
are changed in any way, well, the program
cannot access the file properly. It is
best to leave well enough alone and stay
out of the files, except through the File
		Logger program.

As this is a ShareWare (not FreeWare) type
of program, there is a small registration
fee of ten bucks (plus taxes, shipping etc)
if you continue to use the program. This
will enable me to continue to develope
more programs to assist in smaller type
tasks. It will also give you any updates
to this program [FREE]. And, you will also
be notified of any further programs that
		are developed.

(There is a Registration area upon the
exiting of the program only. It is in
		 the end program menu)

Finally, this is a !!FULL!! program, and
is not crippled in any way. The only thing
you may notice is that there is not the
usual MSWindows Help file. I have tried to
develope one that is more friendly than
the standard by having it imitate the main
		menu.

(Any comments or ideas with regard to this
		 program are welcome)

[THE MAIN MENU]
Rather than have the usual type menu that
consisted of "buttons", the File logger
program uses "BitMaps". These are small
icon type pictures which give a visual
idea what function to access. As well, the
name of the function is listed under the
		bitmap for convenience.

[CREATE A FILE]
Naturally, this is the function that will
create a File Logger file. Please note
that if you create a file that is already
in your directory, all contents will be
		lost.

When you first click on the bitmap, or the
create a file item in the main menu, you
will be requested, prompted for a file to
		create. (the default is newfile.log)

		>> Please note that the File Logger program
searches for files with the extension
*.log. So it is advised that !!all!! of
the files you create have this extension.
As well, the program only searches in
the File Logger directory, so it is also
advised that is where you keep them.

If you decide not to create a file, click
on the close button and you will return to
		the mani menu.

Once you have decided on the name of the
file to create (which must observe the DOS
format), click on the okay button. If the
name is that of a file already in the File
Logger directory, you will be advised of
		this with a box stating:

			[Replace existing file]

At this point you can either replace the
file by clicking on the yes button, or
return back to the new file prompt just by
		clicking on the no button.

(clicking on yes will create the file, and
clicking on no will allow you to change
		 the file name)

Once you have finally created you new file
you will automatically be returned to the
		main menu.

[ DELETE A FILE]
When you click on the Delete a File bitmap
a small box will appear. All the files with
the *.log extension will appear in the list
		box on the left.

		>> Please note that !!only!! the files in
the File Logger directory with the
extension *.log will appear. You will
not be able to delete any other files
from within the File Logger program.

The following button will be present on the
		right side:

			[1] Delete
			[2] Confirm
			[3] Cancel
			[4] Help

As well as an info bitmap.

In order to delete a file, you must first
click on the file to delete in the list
box. Once you have decided on which file
to delete, click on the confirm button.

		>> Please note that the confirm button will
not be active until the delete button
has been clicked. At that time, the
		   delete button will become inactive.

Also, at any time before confirming the
deletion, you can return to the main
menu by clicking on the cancel button.

Once you have confirmed the file to delete
by clicking on the confirm button, you will
be returned to the main menu. The file is
		now deleted and lost forever.

Clicking on the help button will open a
help log on the top right side of the
screen providing step by step instruction.
The help button will now change to a close
log button, and all of the other buttons
		will become inactive.

The info bitmap is inactive at this time.

[VIEW FILE CONTENTS]
Clicking on the view file contents bitmap
will first prompt you for a file to open
for viewing. At this time you can either
select a file or quit and return to the
		main menu.

Once you have selected your file to view,
a log will appear with the entire contents
of the file. You will now be able to scan
through the file and view each entry at
		one time.

The only option available to you will be a
close log button at the bottom of the form.
Clicking on this button (or menu item) will
return you to the main menu.

[NEW ENTRY]
Clicking on the new entry bitmap will first
prompt you for a file to open. At this time
you can either select a file or quit and
		return to the main menu.

Once you have selected a file to open, the
new entry screen will appear. There are
		three catagories provided for information:

			[1] The entry title:
				This is a field provided
for the name of the file
or some clue as to the
				file itself.
			[2] Brief information:
				This is an area provided
				for the listing of various
points so as not to have
				go through the entire file
				contents.
			[3] File contents:
				This area is provided for
				all the information that is
				required for the listing.

		>> Please note that the entry date will
be listed (taken from the system) on
the top right side. this date will also
		   be written into the record.

You will also be provided wiht the following
		options:

			[1] Save
			[2] Clear
			[3] Help
			[4] Main Menu

By clicking on the clear button, anything
you have entered into the three fields will
be erased. This is handy if you entered a
great deal of information in error.

		>> Please note that once you have cleared
the fields, the information cannot be
		   retreived.

Clicking on the main menu button will return
you to the main menu !!without!! saving the
information, so make sure that you save the
		information before exiting.

Clicking on the save button will save the
new record to the file specified earlier.
A box will appear informing you of the file
name as well as the record number. If you
do not input an entry title then the record
number will be used as the title.

Clicking on the help button will open a
help log on the top right side of the
screen providing step by step instruction.
The help button will now change to a close
log button, and all of the other buttons
		will become inactive.

		titles.

			[2] Help
			[3] Main menu

Clicking on the help button will open a
help log on the top right side of the
screen providing step by step instruction.
The help button will now change to a close
log button, and all of the other buttons
		will become inactive.

Clicking on the main menu button will return
		you to the main mneu.

In order to update a record you must first
specify which record to update. First click
on a record title, then on the to update

to update, an update screen will appear
		containing the record to update

(the form is similar to the new entry form)

Once you have entered into the Update an
entry form, you will have the following
		options:

			[1] Save
			[2] Clear
			[3] Help
			[4] Main Menu

Clicking on the clear button will remove all
contents of the record from the screen. If
you do this, all contents will be lost if
you click on the save button. This is only
a valid option if you intend to enter in all
		!!new!! information.

Clicking on the help button will open a
help log on the top right side of the
screen providing step by step instruction.
The help button will now change to a close
log button, and all of the other buttons
		will become inactive.

Clicking on the main menu button will return
you to the main menu !!without!! saving the
!!new!! information. The file will remain
the same >> no information will be lost.

Clicking on the save button will first
display a box with the name of the file and

		titles.

There will also be three options provided

			[1] Delete
			[2] Help
			[3] Main menu

Clicking on the help button will open a
help log on the top right side of the
screen providing step by step instruction.
The help button will now change to a close
log button, and all of the other buttons
		will become inactive.

Clicking on the main menu button will
return you to the main menu !!without!!
deleting any records. The file will remain
		intact.

In order to delete a record, you must first
click on a record title. Once you have done
this, click on the delete button.

the next entry in sequence; the back button
will take you back one entry; the first
