FlyBy - The Network Screen Saver is a message passing utility that lets users benefit from the local area network as well as preserve the useful life of their monitors. FlyBy lets users and the system administrator insert messages that everyone on the network can view when their screen savers activate. This is very useful for non-essential messages that are shared in network environments.

Some useful examples are:

Wish Jim B. Happy Birthday -- March 3

Company picnic on the 16th at 3:00pm

Help save trees. Recycle old office paper.

FlyBy cycles through up to 20 messages that any user has entered. Each user can select the plane, the font parameters, the message order and the speed that the messages scroll. There is a password protection option so that each person can protect their system from unwanted access while they are away. Each message can have a duration of one to eight days. Once the message has expired, it is removed from the list. The system administrator is responsible for editing and deleting any message that has not expired or is inappropriate for the organization.

The network messages are checked and refreshed every fifteen (15) minutes when the screen saver is active.

Note: The Supervisor Application should be installed first!

Screen Saver Installation
Insert the FlyBy diskette and run the SETUSER.EXE program from either File Manager or Program Manager. You will be asked for the drive name and subdirectory that Windows is installed in. The screen saver program file -- FLYBY.SCR -- will be installed into your Windows directory. The setup program needs to edit your CONTROL.INI file so that specific FlyBy screen saver information can be added to provide Password Protection features. The section called: [ScreenSaver.Fly By] will be added to the CONTROL.INI file.

The FlyBy screen saver setup program will also ask for the drive and subdirectory where the shared network message file resides. You should contact your LAN system administrator for the exact pathname for the file called: NETMSGFB.DAT. This file contains all of the messages to display when the screen saver starts. If the drive and path have not been determined yet, cancel out of the setup program and contact your system administrator.

System Administrator Installation
The system administrator first needs to determine exactly where the shared network message file is going to reside. This file -- NETMSGFB.DAT -- contains all of the messages that the FlyBy screen savers will display. Once the drive and path have been determined, run the SETSUPER.EXE program found on the FlyBy diskette. The setup program can be run from File Manager or Program Manager. SETSUPER.EXE will copy the shared network file to the specified drive and path. There will be one message placed in the network message file when installed: "FlyBy -- The Network Message Screen Saver."

As an example, if the drive and pathname are determined to be:

	G:\PROGRAMS\FLYBY

then, enter the above during the installation of the Supervisor application and make a note of this subdirectory. During installation of the FlyBy screen savers, each user will have to enter this drive and pathname. This drive and pathname need to be freely distributed to all of the users that will be installing the screen saver on their local systems. All users need read/write access to this file.

The supervisor also needs to determine where the supervisor application will reside. This program -- SVISOR.EXE -- should reside in a path that is NOT accessible by anyone except the supervisor. The SVISOR.EXE application and the file, SVISOR.INI, will be copied to this subdirectory. The SVISOR.INI file looks like the following:

[Network Access]INFORMATIONAL MESSAGES

NetworkPath=x:\pathname

where:
	x the drive
pathname	the path on drive x

Using the example above:

[Network Access]
NetworkPath=G:\PROGRAMS\FLYBY

Message Order
The order of the messages can be changed by selecting either forward, backward or random in the FlyBy setup program. For example:
Forward display the messages as in the file
	Backward display the messages backward
	Random display the messages randomly

Font
The font name, style, size, effects and color can all be specified by choosing Change Font in the FlyBy setup program. For example: you can choose Arial Italic 20 point in magenta as the settings for the text that is pulled in the banner.
		   Company Picnic: March 16

Adding Messages
You can add messages by choosing the Message button in the FlyBy setup program. This dialog allows you to view existing messages and add a new message. To add a message: type in the edit control and select the OK button to save, or Cancel to quit.

Airplane Type
The type of plane pulling the message banner can be switched between a propeller airplane or a jet:
	Propeller
	Jet

Clouds
The addition of random clouds can be added to the background by selecting the Clouds checkbox.

Flight Speed
The speed that the plane and banner pass by can be changed by selecting a number in the range from 1 to 10. One (1) is the slowest setting and ten (10) is the fastest. The flight speed setting is changeable in the FlyBy configuration dialog.

Passwords
You can password protect your system (workstation) by checking the Password Protected checkbox and setting a password. You set a password by selecting the Set Password button that brings up the Set Password dialog. You will need to enter your password twice; first in the New Password edit control field and then, for verification, in the Retype New Password edit control field.

Background Color
The color of the background can be changed from Black to Dark Blue to Sky Blue. The overall appearance of the screen saver looks best when the background is Dark Blue.

Supervisor Main Dialog
The shared network message file is NETMSGFB.DAT. This file is created when the first message is added by either the supervisor or one of the FlyBy screen saver end users, whichever comes first. The file needs to reside on a drive and within a path that has read/write access that all screen saver users can have access to on the network.

Viewing and Modifying the Message File
When the supervisor application is launched, the dialog is empty. The network message file needs to be loaded by selecting the Load button with the mouse or by typing Alt-L. You can also tab to the Load button and press Enter or the space bar. The network message file will be locked while you are viewing or modifying the file. The FlyBy screen saver end users will not be able to update (add to) this file while the supervisor is viewing or modifying. Only once the file has been saved or the supervisor has exited the Supervisor application will the file be available for end user updating.

Adding a Message
There can be up to twenty (20) messages, each up to eighty (80) characters in length. To add a message to the network message file, begin by placing focus in the Message Text: edit control and typing your message. You then need to determine the duration of the message. The duration is specified by the Expires in ? days: field. Either tab to this field or click in the selection box with the mouse or pointer. You can drop-down this listbox to choose from the predefined range. The duration of each message can be one (1) to eight (8) days. Once you have chosen the duration, either tab to the Add button and press enter, or Alt-A or just click the Add button with the mouse.

The Messages: multiple selection listbox will be updated with the new message.

Editing a Message
First select a message to edit by either clicking on it in the Messages: multiple selection listbox or by highlighting it with a cursor key selection. To use the keyboard, you will need to tab to the Messages: listbox and move the highlight indicator up and down with the cursor keys until you have the desired message selected. Next, tab to the Message Text: edit control and edit the text. Once you have the changes made, select the Edit button to update the message.

Deleting a Message
First select a message to delete by either clicking on it in the Messages: multiple selection listbox or by highlighting it with a cursor key selection. To use the keyboard, you will need to tab to the Messages: listbox and move the highlight indicator up and down with the cursor keys until you have the desired message selected. Next, tab to the Delete button, select Alt-D or click on the Delete button. You will be asked for a confirmation as to whether you are sure you want to delete the message. Enter Yes to continue the delete or No to cancel.

Swapping Two Messages
The placement of two messages in the messages list can be swapped by individually selecting each message and then selecting the Swap button or pressing Alt-W. The Messages: listbox is a multiple selection listbox.

For example:
First select the first message with the mouse or keyboard. Then, by holding down the Control (Ctrl) key, you can select another message by clicking on the second message with the mouse. Finally, select the Swap button with either the mouse or the keyboard. There is no keyboard equivalent of this operation.

Saving the Message File
Once you have completed your changes, you can save the new message file by either selecting the Save button with the mouse or by typing Alt-S or tabbing to the Save button and pressing Enter or the space bar.

Expiration Date
The expiration date determines when the message is to removed if not manually deleted. The expiration can be indefinite if the date is left blank. For example: "00/00/00". Otherwise, the user can define a specific date that the message needs to be automatically removed. For example: "03/16/93" tells FlyBy to delete this message at the end of the day on March 16th.

Informational Messages
"FlyBy Supervisor has the message file locked." This message appears when the supervisor is using the network message file and has it locked so other users may not add messages.

"The FlyBy message file is full." This message appears when an attempt is made to add a message to the message file and the file already has twenty (20) messages.
