Hello all, it's Anthony "Ace" Shubert here from Game Master
 Central, with *YOUR* Ace's Angles.
Lets get some things straight. Here is the net.dictionary as far as
 we are concerned..
Flame: pointless remark usually made by someone who is bored,
jealous or insane. Flames serve no purpose.
Comment: remark that has a point. Does not matter if anyone agrees
            with the point.
So, for the record, we HATE flames, we LOVE comments. A flame is
"your mag sux, mag [fill-in-yours-here] is so much better" without a
reason. A comment is "you have our readership figures wrong" or
"y'all should do more MK2 coverage."
   NOW THEN...
We are *out* or rec.games.pinball. We said that GMJ 41 was the last
one and yet people STILL flamed. Apparently they can't read because
they said they read GMJ 41 and didn't want it in r.g.p! Well, we
said, right in this column, that we were outta there.. for such a nice
group there's some serious losers in there (not all - SOME.)
Well, that's all for this week. The Net's best weekly mag comes at
ya' on Friday mornings from now on.. Cya on April 1 =>

[This is a continuation of our interview that began in GMJ 41.]

Anthony Shubert: With the success of MK2 it's a no-brainer that
there'll be an MK3, and more than likely, MK2 on the home systems,
coming. Do you know what the timetable is for those?

Ed Boon: They'll both definitely be coming out. Right now we're
fixing up some final bugs and then that'll be _IT_ for that. Um,
right now we don't have a set day for "OK, this is the day we start
taping for Kano...", [grin] or deciding if we drop Johnny Cage..

AS: [interrupting] ..but I _like_ Johnny Cage [grin]. Go ahead..

EB: We'll do what we did for the second one [MK2]. We added lots of
stuff... we didn't want to do an upgrade. We don't like doing those
types of things because people get bored of it. BUT, when you hit
them with a lot of stuff [at once], new characters, new stages, new
everything.. then I think it's a lot more fun. MK1 was big.. we
didn't want to let players down with an "MK Special Edition". We
wanted to add as much new stuff as possible while still maintaining
all of the original stuff that made it popular: all the fatalities,
 the hidden stuff.

AS: What about Mortal Kombat III?

EB: There will be an MK3 but right now we can't say much about it:
most of it is still in preproduction.

[The rest of the interview spoke about what is now old news as this
interview was tapes at the Winter CES in January.]

Where did you hear of the Genesis 32x thingee. I have heard of DSP but
it doesn't boost colors. I kind of doubt there is such a thing, that
would hurt Saturn sales if it upgraded the Genesis. Although MPEG would
be cool [I came very close to buying real magic for my IBM but it is so
buggy I decided against it. Plus I heard it wont work with a local

I have dreamed of such of device, but doubt it is coming.

[ACE: Well, we have our sources. =] Seriously, we got a PR release and
followed up with a phone call. As far as 32x boosting colors, I
think it'll affect games that come out from now on - makeing them
"32X aware." Meaning that if it's there they'll use it. The 32X
may be the Saturn - who knows? ]

Zool is a good start for cd32 platform games, combining many qualities
of pre-existing games with some original game-play qualities to create
 a fast-paced platform game.

You are Zool, Ninja of the Nth Dimension, and you're stranded on an
alien planet. (Alien to Zool, that is.) Your ship is busted and you
need to shoot some bad guys to get candy to refuel it. Easy task?
Yep -- this game is extremely easy even set on it's highest difficulty
level. The baddies range from flying bumblebees (that are twice the
size of you), spitting candy flowers and more. Shooting isn't the
only way to defeat them as you can also jump atop them for a higher
bounce -- this helps to get to those hard-to-reach areas.

You can go very, very fast (faster than Sega's Sonic at some points)
but you may not want to. There are several natural hazards to watch
out for, including bottomless pits, spiked walls and ceilings.

One cool feature of this game is it's "Zooling" ability.. Zool can
bounce off of walls or grab onto them. Picture a fast-moving Ninja
Gai Den (8-bit Nintendo) and you'll get the idea. The game has many
powerups. Ranging from the ever-present 1-up to the Splitter (once
again, the Ninja Gai Den Reference) you get a wide array of weapons and
 add-ons for Zool to utilize.

Whenever Zool fires, he's also punching - and this punching movement
does things also. There are several "buttons" laid about the stage
and you need to punch them to save your place, open a door or close a
bridge. Also, you can punch through some walls. (In a nice tough,
Gremlin Graphics put a hidden room in Stage 1.2 with some point
power-ups that spell out "Game Master"! We should give you a 99 for
that alone, but you left off the word "Journal." Oh well, you'll know
 better next time, Gremlin.)

Zool is cool! But, he's a bit over done. This game has Sonic, Mario
and Ninja Gai Den written all over it. Hopefully Zool II will add
more original features. What is here is great - the graphics are
up-to-par and the music is kickin', CD quality of course.

/ ............COMING THIS SUMMER TO AN ARCADE NEAR YOU............ \
+-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=+
If you want to have the SuperTourney come to your local arcade, it
needs to fill the following requirements:
    a) it must have 2+ Mortal Kombat II machines in working order;
    b) it must have at least 25 interested, pre-paid entrants for the
       tourney;
    c) it must be able to hold the event during a weekend [2 days
between Friday and Sunday] between June 25th, 1994 and July
       25th, 1994;
    d) the managers / owners / operators are interested in the tourney
Based on 100 entries [for a medium-sized arcade] the structure would
  be as follows....
  * $5 initial entry, $3 each additional entry
  * the characters are RANDOMLY SELECTED.
  * Players enter a preliminary tourney on the "hard" machine. They
stay on that machine as long as they can. When they lose, they go
  down to the "easy" machine.
  * Each player is ranked based on total wins on both machines [tie
breaker is most wins on hard machine.]
  * Players not satisfied with their rankings can re-enter, but only
the highest entry counts and the entries cannot be added together.
  * the top 24 enter a single-elimination bracket on the final
afternoon, with the top 8 getting a first-round bye. Each match is
a series of games, as follows:
            first round: best of one
           second round: best of three
         quarter finals: best of three
            semi finals: best of three
                 FINALS: best of five

All of the local winners and a select number of 2nd-place finishers
go on to the regional. The regional will have a "local tourney"
preceding it, and on the third day the regional will take place.
Format of the regional is to be determined, but will be similar to
  that of the local tourney.

Tentative plans for the NATIONAL finals are for somewhere in Southern
California, a real HAPPY place, this October.

For more information, email [shubert@usc.edu] with the subject line
"GMJ ST arcade" for owners, or "GMJ ST players" for possible
  entrants. Good luck!

GMJ's Ultimate Mortal Kombat II Guide, part two of many

How good are you? How good are your friends? "Well, I can get 12
wins in a row" "Oh yeah, well I did a 20-streak on Tier One's and
 Two's!!" What??

We have been looking for an easy way to classify players of MK2.
There are certain terms used: newbie, pro, Game Master, etc etc etc..
but no clear-cut way to know how good they are. So, now we have.
Feel free to use this as you see fit... it's already taken over two
colleges and four arcades (Thanks to Matrix and Ace for their
 support.)

The Tier system breaks up people into four (well, five, but one is
special) layers of talent. It sort of looks like an extended pyramid
as far as number of people in each tier goes:

                                : TIER ONE :
                          : TIER TWO :
                     : TIER THREE :
                     : TIER FOUR :

This is a rough sketch, but it's close enough. At any rate, here are
the definitions and requirements for each Tier:

Tier One: Ace player. Usually on the High Score list, has won 15 or
more games in a row against Tier One's and Two's. Knows how
to play with all twelve characters decently, knows at least
three well enough to beat almost anyone with. Wins more
than 2/3 of Random Matches. Can almost Babality/Friendship
           at will.

Tier Two: Good player. Sometimes in the Green List (#11 to #15 on
the High Score list), has won 7 to 14 games in a row against
One's, Two's and Three's. Knows how to use half the guys so
he doesn't get blown away during Randoms. Not someone to
           take lightly.

Tier Three: Average player. Rarely on this List, has won at least
three in a row against anyone. Knows one or two guys at
             most. Usually a SF2/SS/FF/VF import that's learning a new
game. Can usually be Friendshipped by One's, sometimes by
             Two's.

Tier Four: Newbie. FNG. Clueless. Usually the boyfirend/girlfriend
of the One or Two that forced them into playing. Think
            Double Flawless / Friendship material.
