                    FOREST PARK MUNICIPAL

(Actual Name - Dwight D. Eisenhower Municipal)

Location: Forest Park - St. Louis, Missouri

History of Forest Park:
Just exactly what the name implies; a large tract
of land at the west central city limits. Originally more
heavily forested than it is now, hundreds of trees were
removed to make room for the various buildings and exhibits
of the 1904 World's Fair.
Local story has it that when the Fair was closed
the center shaft for the huge ferris wheel was buried in the
park somewhere on the land now occupied by the Eisenhower
Municipal Course. It was simply too large a casting to be
easily moved, and there were no plans to re-construct the
ferris wheel at another location or city. No one has ever
been able to locate this supposed burial site for the shaft
though many have tried; it remains just that; a local story.
The Fair encompassed the property just west of it,
owned by Washington University. The just completed
administration building for the university was leased to the
Fair for use as Fair offices, and nurses (first aid)
facilities. The university's athletic field (Francis Field),
and adjoining facilities were the site of the 1904 Summer
Olympics.
Several buildings were constructed to be permanent
facilities after the Fair. One of these was the St. Louis
Art Museum (originally the Palace of Arts at the Fair).
Another was the Lindell Pavilion which houses the pro shop
now.
The course is surrounded by many other points of
interest in the park, and most are just a few minutes from
the course. They include the Missouri Historical Society,
St. Louis Zooalogical Park (featuring the largest bird cage
ever constructed; the free flight cage; built by the
Smithsonian Institute for the Fair), The Saint Louis
Municipal Opera (one of the largest outdoor theatres in the
country), and the Saint Louis Science Center.

About the course:
Rated as one of the ten toughest municipal courses
in the Midwest, the course is not overly long, at less than
6,000 yards and par 69. The toughness is arrived at from the
terrain; woods and hilly country throughout most of the
course.

Yardages and pars from Course Routing:

Totals: 5921 yards par 69

While it seems as if the pars for #4 and #5 are reversed, this
is because of the difference in difficulty. While there is little
or nothing to obstruct the flight of the ball on #4, there are
all sorts of troubles you can get into on #5.

Most of this course is constructed from memory, from when I could
still play the game on a real course. I may remember more trees
than there actually are, but the majority of the course is fairly
heavily wooded.

The large body of water in the Eastern half of the course is named
the Grand Basin. Constructed for the Fair, recreations of famous
naval battles were performed here using scaled down replicas of
the actual ships. I think the size they used was 3/4. The 17th,
across the Eastern end of the Basin is a watery grave for many a
short shot.
