 The City Beingby Michael Heinich

                    Heart of concrete and glass.
                    Beating, pounding
                    Bones of rigid steel.
                    Bracing, supporting
Veins of tar and asphalt move tiny metal cells.
                    Reviving, recycling

                    Towering majestically over the earth.
                    Tall, proud
                    Spreading over the surrounding land.
                    Growing, expanding
                    An amoeba, feeding upon everything.
                    Swallowing, conquering

Days bring steel cells in for new activity.
                    Moving, producing
Night slows vital functions to a crawl.
                    Sleeping, resting
                    As empty cells leave, exausted.
                    Spent, expired

A tumor is buried deep in the heart.
                    Diseased, cancerous
Black as death, it eats the soul.
                    Decay, posioned
Until the City Being is finished.
                    Empty, lifeless
