ALDE'S "PICK.EXE" PROGRAM FOR SHAREWARE CAROUSEL The disc contains 11000 (IBM) zip files. These zip files have from 1 to 150 files with-in. The files may be something as complex as QMODEM4(c) or as simple as a single text file with someone's opinion about anything. The disc includes a program that will help you find the file you need, then unzip it to the destination of your choice. We call the program "PICK". ** PICK was designed to help the user quickly search through the disc. It is best used to simply find and unzip any file(s) you might know you want -- or examine the .doc/.txt files to determine if this is the right program you were hoping for. Though the PICK program is very simple and intuitive, the following instructions provide details for its use. TO USE THE PICK PROGRAM: 1.) PICK can be started from the CDROM root directory or put into the path and run from any drive/directory in the computer. * When run from the CDROM root directory, simply type: PICK * If run from the path, type PICK [CDROM DRIVE LETTER] 2.) After the program has been started, a menu of the categories will be presented. Use the ARROW KEYS and the HOME/END keys to highlight the category of choice. 3.) After the choice has been highlighted, press ENTER. The catalog for that category will be loaded into memory. The time required for this will vary depending on the size of the catalog, speed of the computer and most importantly, the speed of the CDROM reader. In any case, it will be a short wait. 4.) After the catalog has been loaded, it can be BROWSED or SEARCHED. * To BROWSE the catalog, simply use the PageUp and PageDn keys to move between new/old screens of files. Use the UP and DOWN arrow keys to highlight the file of choice. * To SEARCH the catalog, press the TAB key. Enter your search phrase or word into the search box . Press ENTER. A sub- catalog of files will be presented. This sub-catalog can be browsed or searched just as the full catalog. (NOTE: If the sub-catalog(s) fail to produce the desired file, the full catalog will have to be reloaded from the main category menu.) 5.) Assuming a successful browse/search, highlight the desired file and press ENTER. The chosen file and the default destination will be displayed. The destination is that drive/sub-directory, where the file will be UNZIPPED to. To change the default, simply BACKSPACE it out and replace with a new one. (NOTE: If a new directory/sub-directory is being created, restrict it to ONE level.) * LEGAL: C:\CWORK * ILLEGAL: C:\CWORK\WORK1 * If C:\CWORK ALREADY EXISTS, then a new sub-directory (i.e. WORK1) CAN be added. 6.) Press ENTER and the file will unzip to the destination after asking if the destination directory should be cleared. 7.) The computer will list the files that were unzipped and present an opportunity to run/examine a file. If the file is a .exe or .com file enter the name of the file and press ENTER. To examine a text file, make certain your favorite text lister is in the path, then type that file name followed by the name of the .DOC file. (EXAMPLE: Assume the name of your text lister is LISTER, it is in the path and the name of the text file is INSTRUCT.DOC. In most cases the command would be LISTER INSTRUCT.DOC). 8.) If a file is not to be examined or run, press ENTER to return to the catalog or type EXIT to exit straight to the destination. NOTE: Running a .exe or .com file via PICK is not always the best choice. If the desired program requires a command line input the program will try to run, fail and return to the PICK menu. If it is a Terminate and Stay Resident it will enter your machine and send you straight back to the menu you just left -- this may or may not serve your needs. However, if a program is successfully run to conclusion, PICK will reset the screen and put you back into position to continue your search. This can make it very simple to test a large number of programs or play a lot of different games, quickly and easily.
