            The Myrmidon

The USS Myrmidon, NCC-10522, was commissioned on stardate
10245.0 (January 1st, 2336 at midnight), and was the second
Ambassador class vessel produced, and was the first of its
class to be put into service. After the USS Horatio was
destroyed on stardate 41775.5 (October 17th, 2364 at 4 am),
the Myrmidon became the only vessel built as part of the
original Ambassador class ship building contract that
remains in service. There are still, however, a large
number of Ambassador class ships still in service that were
built subsequent to the original series. Captain Lisa J.
DaGama, regarded by many as a bit of a renegade officer, was
given command of the Myrmidon on stardate 41876.0 (November
            19th, 2364 at 8 pm).
On stardate 48570.0 (January 1st, 2371 at midnight), the
Myrmidon will have been in service for thirty five years,
and it was scheduled to be decommissioned on that date.
               However, on stardate 47625.6 (February 20th, 2370 at 4:48
am), Starfleet Central Security (SCS) operative Major Scott
Baker discovered evidence of what is known as the "Renegade
Fleet", which was rumoured to be under the direct control of
former SCS officer Colonel John Blacklock, who disappeared
amid mysterious circumstances approximately six months
            previous (circa stardate 47080).
On stardate 48212.3 (September 2nd, 2370 at 6:24 pm), the
Federation starship USS Gallant was commandeered by its
chief engineer, Lieutenant Commander Carmen Barant and
former Starfleet Academy cadet Nicolas Locarno. Both are
suspected of being members of the "Renegade Fleet".
Beginning the scheduled decommissioning, a number of
officers (including the first officer, chief engineer,
security chief and other senior officers) were rotated off
the Myrmidon at Starbase 65 so that they could start their
new assignments. The Myrmidon left Starbase 65 for the
Bajoran sector on stardate 48355.2 (October 20th, 2370 at
9:36 am), to perform its final mission exploring the Gamma
            quadrant.
               On stardate 48494.0 (December 5th, 2370 at 4 pm),
Starfleet Command approved the establishment of an SCS task
force for the purpose of monitoring the activities of the
"Renegade Fleet". A number of starships are placed on call
and at the disposal of this new task force. Included among
them are the USS Mata Hari (modified Oberth class), the USS
Exeter (Excelsior class), the USS Paris and the USS St.
Petersburg (both Nebula class), and the USS Myrmidon. Each
of these starships would be redesignated from USS (United
Space Ship) to SCSS (Starfleet Central Security Ship), and
would be assigned SCS liaison officers that would keep in
contact with the SCS to coordinate task force activities.
They will perform the duties of the Executive Officer as
            well.
On stardate 48537.0 (December 20th, 2370 at midnight),
the USS Oslo arrived at Deep Space Station DS9, and was the
first of many ships to drop off officers that would join the
crew of the Myrmidon once it returned through the wormhole.
A dozen other ships, including the Farragut, would follow.
Instead of being it's decommissioning stardate, 48570.0
was now the official date for the transfer of control of the
Myrmidon from General Starfleet Operations (GSO) to the SCS.
A ceremony was held on the newly redesignated SCSS Myrmidon
while docked at DS9 to officially acknowledge the transfer.
The new officers that had been gathering at DS9 officially
            joined the Myrmidon's crew.

            The Mission

            The Primary Mission
Like most Starfleet vessels, the primary mission of the
SCSS Myrmidon is exploration: To seek out new life and new
civilizations, to boldly go where no one has gone before.

            The Secondary Mission
As a member of the SCS task force, the Myrmidon will be
required to identify and pursue any members of the "Renegade
Fleet" that it encounters, no matter where, when and of what
            race they belong.
The SCSS Myrmidon is essentially the flagship of the SCS
task force. As such, it will be the Myrmidon that sets the
standard for the other ships in the fleet, and it will be
the Myrmidon's successes and failures that will be used to
judge the success of the task force.

            Other Missions
Again, like most Starfleet vessels, the Myrmidon is
capable of performing many tasks. Beyond the exploratory
missions and SCS missions, the Myrmidon will be required to
perform scientific missions, diplomatic missions, defensive
missions and any other types of missions that Starfleet
Command (or the SCS) deems necessary.

               Some examples are:
Exploration - the pushing out of new boundaries of
                 the frontier
                 Transporting important passengers
                 Diplomatic and trade missions
Patroling along marked or disputed boundaries
                 (Ferengi, Romulan)
                 Mediation and negotiation
                 Responding to planetary emergencies
                 Responding to ships in distress
                 Routine visits to planets/colonies/space stations
                 Scientific missions
Defensive actions against threats to Federation
                 Planets
                 Military Maneuvers
                 Testing of new equipment
                 Training missions
Serving as police/security force where requested
Serving as good will ambassadors/showing the flag
                 Crisis control
                 Terrorist/hostage rescue

            THE STAR TREK FORMAT
The following section was lifted directly from the Star
Trek: The Next Generation second year writer's guide (with
just a few modifications). I believe that these comments
would be as valid in Renegades as they are for The Next
            Generation.

            PEOPLE STORIES
Exciting drama has always been about people! Yes, it
takes place in the 24th Century, which involves a certain
amount of high tech gadgets and spaceships and such, but
their importance to STAR TREK is about the same as we see in
the use of 20th Century automobiles, telephones and police
revolvers. And STAR TREK handles 24th Century gadgetry just
as casually. It is how that technology affects OUR
            CONTINUING CHARACTERS that is important.

            EMPHASIZING A FAMILY ENSEMBLE CREW
We do not emphasize only a STAR and CO-STAR. The secret
of STAR TREK has always been in MAKING THE AUDIENCE IDENTIFY
WITH ALL THE CONTINUING CHARACTERS. If Wells, or Callahan,
or anyone else feels pain or joy, we insist upon the
audience feeling that with them. Yes, our stories often
feature exciting guest star characters who are not members
of our starship crew and not necessarily human either - but
the focus of the tale is HOW THE OUTSIDE CHARACTER(S) AND
EVENTS AFFECT OUR CONTINUING CHARACTERS! However fascinating
alien life forms may be and how imaginative you write them,
STAR TREK is not interested in stories centering on how the
            Whatchamacallems interact with the Thingamajigians.

ABOUT A SUBJECT OF SOME INTEREST OR SIGNIFICANCE TODAY
It can be as light and pleasant as the question of the
NATURE OF HUMOR to something as an examination of the BASICS
OF TERRORISM. Or touch on any one of ten thousand other
subjects, large or small, about the experience of being a
human. The right kind of story is one that interests today's
audience DESPITE its 24th Century setting.

            ENTERTAIN
Our series takes place at a time when humans can perform
wonders, and WE WANT OUR AUDIENCE TO IDENTIFY WITH THE
EXCITEMENT OF THAT. Our Starship travels to strange new
worlds, visits new civilizations, uses Holodecks,
            Transporters, intelligent machines, automated food
dispensers that can cook like the finest Federation chefs,
and a thousand other exciting things. Also exciting aliens
and alien dangers, too. In twenty-three years of STAR TREK
we've learned how to stay close enough to science fact and
theory (and common sense) to make these wonders all seem
            real!

            NEW IDEAS
Our technique is to entertain our viewers until they
relax, then ZING them with something that our writers
believe is important to say to today's audience. Whatever
the time frame of dramatic stories, IN THE END THEY ARE ALL
            ABOUT TODAY!

SHOW A SOMEWHAT BETTER KIND OF HUMAN THAN TODAY'S AVERAGE
Our continuing characters are the kind of people that the
STAR TREK audience would like to be themselves. They are not
perfect, but their flaws do not include falsehood(*), petty
jealousies and the banal hypocrisies common in the Twentieth
            Century.
(*) See the section on the SCS for additional comments on
            this subject.

            IMPORTANT
Regular characters all share a feeling of being part of a
band of brothers and sisters. As in the original STAR TREK,
we invite the audience to share in the same feeling of
            affection for our characters.

            Additional Note
Although the setting of this series tends to suggest an
almost ongoing state of war, this is only the setting. It
cannot be emphasized strongly enough that the Myrmidon is a
ship of exploration, not a war vessel and it's not a police
cruiser either. Periodically, the Myrmidon may be called
upon to defend the Federation, from threats originating both
from within and from without of the Federation. This
happens to be one of the duties of all Starships. In the
case of the Myrmidon, it happens that the majority of these
threats will come from the Renegade Fleet.

            The Crew

The following are the primary members of the Myrmidon's
crew (others may be added at a later date). Uniform colours
are listed. Note that SCS officers use ranks based on army
standard ranks, instead of naval ranks.
Provided with each character is a "Casting Wish List"
which includes a few suggestions for casting of the roles.
They are only intended to give preliminary ideas. An
example of a previous role is provided for identification
            purposes.

Commanding Officer, Captain Lisa J. DaGama (red)
Captain DaGama took command of the Myrmidon at the age of
thirty two (she's thirty nine now), which is relatively
young, but her judging her solely on her ability to command,
she probably deserved promotion about four or five years
            earlier.
DaGama has a reputation as a bit of a renegade, and it is
well deserved. She has been reprimanded by her superiors on
a number of occasions, mostly for failure to obey orders, or
more correctly, for the creative way she obeyed orders. She
is a risk taker, but she is not a gambler. She will only
disobey orders when she is absolutely and unequivocally
certain that she is in the right. To this point in her
career, all of her infractions have lead to good results,
which is why she's only received reprimands.
Since taking command of the Myrmidon, DaGama has started
playing down her renegade image. She finds the level of
responsibility required to command a starship quite
sobering. She is now much more aloof with her staff than
she'd ever have expected, and now she finds she has a whole
new batch of officers to get used to.
She has certain concerns about her new assignment. She
is simply far more interested in exploration and discovery
than she is in patrolling the borders, which is what she
ultimately thinks this assignment will become. Before the
Myrmidon became an SCS ship, she wouldn't have given the
whole idea of central security a second thought.
DaGama was born stardate 6481.9 (July 25th, 2332 at 3:12
pm) in the city of Hobart, Tasmania, Australia.

            DaGama and Baker
DaGama sees much of herself in her new first officer.
She wants to guide him, but is unsure how close to get with
him. There is always a certain amount of mistrust when GSO
officers must deal with the SCS. It is similar to police
officers and internal affairs officers on a police force.
As much as you may like an SCS officer personally, there's
always a niggling doubt at the back of your mind about their
            motives.
She will have to rely a certain amount on Baker's
expertise and experience in the area of central security, in
particular as to how it relates to her command, until she
familiarizes herself with any new protocols.

            DaGama and Richardson
As one of the last of her senior bridge officers to
remain on the Myrmidon, Richardson is the closest thing
DaGama has to a real friend. She has no particular interest
in science, so she relies upon his expertise in that area.

            DaGama and Wells
DaGama had heard about Wells' exploits at the academy and
as an Ensign, and had been planing on recruiting her. When
she was informed of the recrewing, she immediately requested
            Wells for the Myrmidon.

            DaGama and Callahan
As with Wells, DaGama had her eye on Cadet Wayne
Callahan. He was just graduating when word of the recrewing
came to her, so she also requested him. She was unaware of
the relationship between Lt. Wells and Ensign Callahan.

Joan Severance (Movie: Bird on a Wire)
               Rachel Ward (Mini-series: Thorn Birds)
Marie Marshall (TNG ep: Starship Mine)

Maryam D'Abo (Movie: The Living Daylights)

SCS Liaison Officer (Executive Officer), Lieutenant Colonel
            Scott Baker (green)
Like DaGama, Baker is a bit of a loose cannon. He is
normally a stickler for regulations, but often only when
they work in his favour. He has no qualms about breaking
rules and regulations if it means he can get the job done
better that way. He, like most SCS officers, rationalize
this as working for the greater good. He is thirty three
years old, having been born stardate 12415.8 (December 24th,
2337 at 2:24 pm), in Denver, Colorado.
He is also a great believer in the "need to know". That
is, he will not inform other officers of any details that he
feels they do not strictly need to know. He is, however, of
the opinion that he needs to know everything. It is not
beyond completely unlikely that he would maintain
surveillance on a fellow officer "for their own good".
Baker also will periodically receive orders directly from
the SCS which are mission related, that he won't necessarily
share with the Captain if he feels it is detrimental to the
mission for him to share that information. He is confident
(and rightly so) that the SCS will back him up on almost all
            decisions.
Baker is a personable sort, and quite adept in social
situations, but seldom does he interact with the crew. He
has decided to distance himself from to crew to make it
easier to do his job. He would like to be closer with his
Captain, but again feels that his SCS duties would suffer.
If he is to have a close, friendly relationship with anyone
on the ship, it would be with someone who is not part of the
            regular crew.

            Baker and DaGama
It is not uncommon for a first officer to take the
approach that it is his ship, and he simply allows the
Captain to command it. Baker, however, is not particularly
interested in the ship itself (beyond his duties to maintain
it, of course), but is primarily concerned with its mission.
Baker respects his Captain (and believes she'd make a
good addition to the SCS). He'd be more than willing to
protect her as is his job as her first officer. He expects
to be given a lot of leeway and autonomy to conduct his
            affairs.

            Baker and Richardson
Baker doesn't have time for science or scientists, unless
it directly relates to an SCS mission. He regards the
scientific (and exploration, etc) missions as detracting
from the real purpose of the Myrmidon, but he is willing to
respect the other officers and their jobs. He would never
share his opinions on this subject with anyone. However,
his relationship with Richardson will seem forced to any
            observer.

            Baker and Wells
Baker has a lot of respect of Lieutenant Wells. He looks
at her as one of his ilk. He believes they have a great
deal in common and is interested in pursuing a friendly
            relationship with her.

            Baker and Operations Manager
There is naturally a certain amount of overlap between
the responsibilities of the Operations Manager and the
Executive Officer (XO). They both ensure the smooth running
of the ship and all its systems. The XO is more concerned
with the administrative side, whereas the Ops Manager is
more concerned with technical aspects. Baker is likely to
shift much of this kind of work to the Ops Manager. This is
not because of laziness, but because he has other
responsibilities beyond those of a normal first officer, and
needs to delegate some of his responsibilities to his
subordinates. This is likely not going to cause friction.

            Baker and Security Chief
Here again, there is overlap. Ship's security and
Starfleet Security will necessarily share some common goals,
and there are likewise some places where their goals will be
at odds. It is not unlikely that the Security Chief will
harbour some resentment of Baker. This should, however, be
a healthy relationship, and the resentment should not go
            beyond professional norms.

            Casting Wish List
Mario Van Peebles (Series: Sonny Spoon)

Science Officer, Lieutenant Daniel Richardson (blue)
Richardson had no intention of joining Starfleet when he
began his university career. His father had been a
Starfleet officer, and, to Daniel's mind, not much of a
father. He never wanted to follow in his father's footsteps
if it meant either giving up his intention to have a family,
            or his abilities to parent.
All that changed, however, the day he got the news of his
            father's death.
His father was aboard the first Federation Starship make
contact with the Solinae Dominion, the USS Cortez, an Oberth
class science vessel. They were simply doing scans in the
Beta Tasman system when they were attacked without
provocation, and utterly destroyed. The Solinae starship
that attacked them towed the broken hull of the Cortez to a
Federation starbase as an example, and warning, to stay away
            from the Dominion.
In tribute to his father, Richardson decided to change
his mind and follow in his father's footsteps after all.
Despite his wish to devote his career to paying some
imagined debt to his father, Richardson is not all that
crazy about the idea of Starfleet. He has made a
commitment, however, and feels honour bound to see it
through. The Myrmidon has been his first stint in space
after a few years on Earth in labs. His duties are
principally related to research, but he also must
            administrate the Science department.
Richardson is driven, not only by his wish to repay his
father, but by his very nature. He doesn't understand the
demons that seem to dog his every step, and doesn't care to.
Daniel is thirty one. Once he decided he was going to
enter the academy, Daniel avoided specializing in any
particular area of the sciences. He's basically a
nexialist. He was born in Kyoto, Japan, stardate 13765.1
(March 20th, 2339 at 8:48 am). He has a doctorate in
general sciences and nexialism, plus a few assorted smaller
            degrees.

            Richardson and DaGama
Captain DaGama is the only one aboard to know that
Richardson's father was aboard the Cortez (although every
officer knows of the Cortez itself). He considers DaGama
his best friend. DaGama usually calls Richardson as
            "Doctor", instead of Lieutenant.

            Richardson and Baker
Richardson is not overly thrilled at the new mission of
the Myrmidon. The idea of becoming embroiled in a war
frightens him. He believes this task force is just asking
for war with a number of enemy powers.

            Richardson and Engineering Officer
Because of the general nature of his education,
Richardson is quite helpful when it comes to ship's
engineering. He's always willing to offer advice to anyone
in that department, but would never think of forcing his
            opinions on another.

            Richardson and Callahan
Though technically his superior officer, Richardson
allows Callahan almost a free reign where the computer is
concerned. He's aware that Callahan can be a little bit
brusque with his fellow officers, and slightly eccentric,
but also knows the young man's abilities make putting up
            with his attitude worthwhile.

Tactical (Weapons) Officer, Lieutenant (jg) Cassandra Wells
            (red)

Wells is on the fast track to command. Her knowledge of
tactics is unsurpassed. She does, however, need experience,
and also she needs to improve her administrative and
political abilities before she'd be ready to command a ship.
Wells is able to take her tactical and analytical skills
and apply them in many different situations. She's always
been a student of psychology, and it's shipboard
            applications.
If any member of the crew can be genuinely called the
"hero" on the SCSS Myrmidon, it would be Wells. She goes
well out of her way to help her fellow officers in times of
trouble, both physical and mental. She is just as willing
to provide a shoulder to cry on as she is to tackle a rabid
targ in order to save a struggling crewmate. She is an
expert in all forms of unarmed combat that are taught at the
academy, and a few others that aren't. Her skills with a
phaser, or other weaponry, is among the best not only in the
fleet, but in the history of the fleet.
Cassandra is an extremely passionate woman, in both her
on and off hours. She is extremely loyal to Starfleet, and
            to her friends and crewmates.
She is twenty five. Her birthdate was November 30th,
2345 (stardate 21103.3 at 10:24 am). Her service record
lists her place of birth as the starship USS Foudroyant.
Wells considers herself a "spacebaby", having been born out
among the stars instead of on some planet.

            Wells and DaGama
Wells thinks of DaGama as a mentor. She'd begun studying
all she could about her new commander once she heard she'd
            be assigned to the Myrmidon.

            Wells and Baker
Although she admires Baker's style, she's wary of him.
Although her primary function aboard appears to be one of
war, she'd prefer to avoid going to war if she can avoid it.
Like Richardson, she believes Baker is far too willing to
start a war, for her tastes.

            Wells and Callahan
Though a couple of years ahead of Callahan, they had
attended the Academy together and used to be the best of
friends. They, along with another cadet, had hoped to get
posted to the same ship. This friendship ended, however,
around the time of Wells' last year.
Over the break between semesters at the Academy, Wells
met, fell in love with and married Frank Callahan, Wayne's
father. Wayne did not like the idea of his father married
to one of his friends. Eventually, Wayne's relationship
with both Wells and his father fell apart completely. The
strain that Wayne's professed hatred of them put on Wells'
            marriage eventually lead to divorce.
Wells and Callahan had not spoken since. Now that they
are serving on the same ship, which is ironically what
they'd originally hoped to do, Wells wants to reconcile
            their differences.

Computer Scientist, Ensign Wayne Callahan (blue)

Callahan is a phenom with computers. His abilities to
think things through in his head allow him to get things
done extremely quickly. He has gained a certain amount of
renown for his problem solving abilities.
Wayne is an idea man. No matter what the situation, he
can come up with ideas that, if they aren't a solution in an
of themselves, will at least inspire others to come up with
solutions. His advice is often sought out even on matters
which have little or no relationship with his areas of
            expertise.
His principal specialty is artificial intelligence, but
his is quite capable in all areas of computing, although he
limits himself to software. He has no interest in hardware,
except for what it can do for him. He'd rather leave the
design of hardware to the engineers.
Often it seems that he relates better to computers than
he does to people, but this is just because he's been hurt
by getting too close to people before (Wells), and doesn't
plan to have any more close relationship.
Wayne is twenty two. His mother died when his was about
ten, and he is estranged from his father. He was born in
New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada, on stardate
            23638.4 (March 26th, 2348 at 11:12 am).

            Callahan and DaGama
Although he respects the Captain, he seldom needs to
interact with her. He has a laissez faire attitude to
authority in general. As a scientist, Callahan considers
himself removed from the military aspects of the Myrmidon.

            Callahan and Richardson
Callahan likes Richardson, and considers him a friend.
He also likes the way Richardson allows him to work away by
himself without much interference. He often socializes with
            Richardson.

            Callahan and Wells
Callahan hates Wells. He also loves her. This is a
cause of much consternation to the young computer scientist,
because if he simply hated her, his life would be easy.
However, they had developed a very deep friendship back at
the academy before Wells' marriage, and those feelings still
            linger in him.
Callahan finds Wells attractive, but his is not attracted
to her. Similarly, he loves her, but is not (and never was)
in love with her. Although he'd hate to have to spend time
in the same room with her, Callahan would still gladly lay
            down his life for Wells.
This situation between Wells and Callahan should be
addressed and RESOLVED during the first season, preferably
near the beginning of the season. A possible resolution may
involve a life and death situation require one of these
officers to save the other. Afterwards, Callahan and Wells
should return to being the best of friends (and just
            friends).

            Positions still available:

The following areas have not been assigned. This is
intentional to provide space for additional crew members to
come aboard (possibly from the Enterprise) as needed. The
officer that the area was left open for will be put in
brackets [ ]. If the officer in question is not required on
the Myrmidon, the position will either be left vacant,
filled by another officer or designated as not applicable
aboard the Myrmidon. Hopefully, only a few (one or two) of
these officers will be transferring from the Enterprise (or
Ghandi, Academy, etc), as appropriate. They are listed in
order of preference. Those that are transferred to the
Myrmidon will necessarily be unavailable to the Enterprise
            (for movies).

            The Setting

            The SCS

The SCS is Starfleet Central Security. It is the
division of Starfleet that is responsible for maintaining
the security of the Federation as a whole. It might be
compared to the CIA in the United States, or to the Tal
Sh'iar of Romulus. However, both those examples have poor
connotations. The SCS is composed of the same types of
scrupulous individuals that make up the rest of Starfleet.
As stated in the Next Generation writer's guide:
Our continuing characters are the kind of people
that the STAR TREK audience would like to be
themselves. They are not perfect, but their flaws
do not include falsehood, petty jealousies and the
banal hypocrisies common in the Twentieth Century.
This would essentially apply to the SCS, with a single
exception: Falsehood. Even in an ideal culture, there are
some things that it's better not to know. There are certain
times when an SCS officer must either lie, or at least be
extremely vague or evasive. Paraphrasing Captain Picard
from Ensigns of Command, "Sometimes excessive honesty can be
detrimental." In general, no SCS officer would outright lie
            without extremely good reason.
Some of the duties of the SCS include internal
investigations where there are suspicions of wrongdoing, and
espionage. They seek to lessen potential threats by
detecting them as early as possible. They are still
accountable to all the laws, regulations and directives of
the Federation and Starfleet, however, and any infractions
of those rules must have extremely good justifications.
They do not, for example, routinely listen at doors, or to
conversations in ten forward, or otherwise intrude on the
civil rights of Starfleet officers or Federation personnel
just on the off chance that they may discover a crime. In
fact, SCS officers are strong believers in the "Golden
Rule", that is, do unto others as you would have others do
            unto you.
As regards internal investigations, the SCS follow rules
very similar to police officers of the twentieth century.
They have more flexibility, though, as it concerns their
espionage operations, simply because it is required. It is
not uncommon for the SCS to plant a spy in an enemy's
territory simply for information gathering purposes.
Usually, these spies with have specific operations in mind,
such as determining the potential threat of a new weapon
that the Romulans are developing, but others will simply be
there to listen for whatever comes up. They are not trying
to steal battle plans, or technology, but simply finding out
if the enemy's activities will impact upon the Federation
            and its allies.
For example, the SCS would never consider sending an
operative to steal plans on the Romulan cloaking device, but
they would have no problem sending that operative to snoop
around and see if Romulus is thinking of invading the
            Federation any time soon.
The SCS sends no operatives into the territory of a
friendly powers, unless there was preexisting evidence that
said power is considering action against the Federation. If
that were the case, then an operative would be used to
verify that evidence, and assist in determining the best
response or defense to such an action.
It should be restated that the SCS would never breach the
prime directive in any of its activities without extreme
            cause.

            Rank Comparisons
In the SCS, modified army style ranks are used instead of
navy ranks. This is because the SCS is by no means a ship
based operation. Its operatives perform mostly ship
independent functions, such as espionage. The following are
the approximate rank equivalents between SCS ranks and
            normal GSO ranks:

               SCS Rank GSO Rank

               General (special) Admiral (special)
               Colonel ^^^^ Captain ****
               Lieutenant Colonel ^^^ Commander ***
               Major |^^ Lieutenant Commander o**
1st Lieutenant ^^ Lieutenant (sg) oo
               2nd Lieutenant |^ Lieutenant (jg) *o
               Sergeant ^ Ensign *
Corporal | Chief Warrant Officer o
               Private Chief Petty Officer

               * represents a full pip, o is a half (hollow) pip
^ represents a full flag, | is a half (hollow) flag

Notice that the SCS has deleted the rank of Captain, to
avoid confusion with GSO ranks. Also, the only half rank
used is Lieutenant Colonel. Sergeant is now considered an
            officer position.

            New Enemies

            Sycarans
The fourth planet in the Alpha Tasman system is called
Sycaras. It's inhabitants are an ancient race, full of
thinker and scientists. They are exceptionally intelligent,
but lack motivation. They are however quite disciplined,
and given appropriate guidance, can make quite skilled
soldiers. They are by no means a warrior race.
The Sycaran civilization had been around for millennia,
almost completely unchanged, until the arrival of the
Solinae. Since then, their civilization has been altered to
become the foot soldiers and the speakers for the Solinae,
who prefer to remain in the background.
As far as most people in the Federation are concerned, it
is the Sycarans that are the force in the Tasman sector.
They are generally unaware of the existence of the Solinae.

            Solinae
The Solinae culture is quite old, though not nearly as
old as that of the Sycarans. The Solinae (when referring to
the people, Solinae is pronounced Sol-in-EYE, but when
referring to the planet name, it is pronounced Sol-in-AYE),
are natural warriors. Both the males and the females are,
in general, tall and well muscled. They are also, quite
            Human.
There are early legends of the first arrival of the
Solinae to their new world. It is believed that another
race transported them from their home (presumably Earth), to
            Solinae.
The government of the Solinae is called the Dominion. It
consists of a number of elected advisors, all of whom report
to the Dominus (male) or Dominae (female). Generally, this
position is passed by caste links to the children of the
Dominus or Dominae. In Solinae culture, family links (which
are important) are passed from a parent to the same sex
children. Caste links (which are even more important), are
passed from parent to the opposite sex children. This will
be further discussed later with the language and naming
            conventions.
When the leader of the Solinae retires or died, the
advisory votes on whether to appoint the eldest caste
(opposite sex) child the title, or whether to select a new
ascendant from among their number. It is very rare for this
to happen, and only occurs in unusual circumstances.
The oldest caste in the Solinae civilization is the
warrior caste (designated by the caste name "jr"). They
make up the majority of the military (the Guard) and do not,
in general, recognize the Dominus or Dominae as anything
other than a figurehead. To them, the true leader of the
people is the Lord General. He has absolute authority, and
his decisions usually take precedence over that of the
government. The current Lord General is Hjrad.
The Solinae alphabet has twenty five letters, which are
grouped into three groups: Vowels, Semi-vowels (soft
consonants) and Consonants (hard consonants). There are
            five vowels: A, E, I, O and U; ten semi-vowels: H, J, L, M,
            R, S, V, W, Y, Z; and ten consonants: B, D, F, G, K, N, P,
Q, T, X. There is no C in the Solinae alphabet. It's role
is taken up by K and S. The closest thing to CH is TZ.
The vowels are used exactly the same way they are used in
English, and are pronounced the same. The same rules are
used to decide if the long or short pronunciation will be
used, except for certain cases (such as AE). The semi-
vowels are consonants that can play the role of a vowel. In
the example, Hjrad, the j is acting as a vowel. It is
pronounced by sounding the H and then the j, and blending
the two together. Hj tends to sound like an aspirated H,
followed by a SH sound. The R sound is trilled by placing
the tongue behind the teeth and allowing it to vibrate (the
ad part is pronounced exactly the same as it would be in
English). The Y, even when acting like a vowel, is
            pronounced in its consonant form.
The consonants (hard) are usually pronounced with more
force than is used in English. The K and the Q are similar,
except the Q is pronounced with the mouth in the same shape
as is used for a long O. The X is pronounced as a Z, except
            with more force.
Solinae have single word names and consist of three
parts: Personal prefix, Caste name and Family suffix. The
personal prefix is often a single letter, but it can also be
a syllable of up to four letters. It will always begin with
a semi-vowel for males and with begin with either a vowel or
a consonant for females. It is selected by the parents,
usually to give the name an aesthetic sound. The most
important part of the Solinae name is the caste name. It is
a single syllable of either two or three letters. This part
of the name is passed, absolutely unchanged, from parent to
their opposite sex children. The caste children usually
take up the role of their caste parent.
The family suffix is also important to a Solinae but not
when compared to the caste name. This suffix is also at
most a single syllable. It is passed from parent to the
same sex children, but the order of the letters in this name
may be rearranged for a more aesthetic sound and to avoid
duplicate names (where possible). Females will have family
names ending in vowels, and male family names will end in
            consonants (hard or soft).
An example of a male name is Hjrad. It has a semi-vowel,
single letter prefix, "H". It has the warrior caste name
"jr" and the family suffix, ending in a consonant, "ad".
Hjrad's daughter is named Tjrana. It begins with a
consonant, single letter prefix, followed by the caste name
from her father, "jr" and a family suffix "ana", ending in a
vowel, and presumably based on her mother's family name.
There are occasions when a Solinae will permit their name
to be shortened by the omission of certain letters from
their name. This will usually be a form of endearment.
The centre piece of Solinae culture is honour. However,
unlike Klingon honour, Solinae honour lies in a warrior's
ability to stay alive, rather than their ability to die.
Fallen warriors are not honoured by their fellows. However,
a Solinae warrior is not allowed to retreat (except in
strategy), relent or avoid a fight. They must be absolutely
confident in their ability to defeat any and all
            adversaries.
The traditional dress of a Solinae warrior is a
lightweight set of armour, white in colour composed of a
material that is extremely resistant to energy bursts (like
phaser or disruptor fire). It will completely absorb phaser
energy of settings 1-2 without much difficulty. Settings 3-
5 will be converted into kinetic energy (i.e. it will knock
the wearer backwards). A few blasts of a phaser set from 6-
10 will be stopped by the armour, but will eventually
penetrate it. A phaser set above 10 will instantly
obliterate the armour. It is believed that a large
component of this armour is similar in structure to
dilithium (but not the same. The armour could never be used
            as a substitute for dilithium).
Solinae warriors will always have a sword on their
person. When the Solinae draw their weapons, they almost
certainly intend to kill someone. However, the sword will
also be drawn for reasons of honour and ceremony. When
leaving a formal situation, Solinae warriors will draw their
blade, hold it, point down, with the pommel over their
heart. Solinae that hand over their sword are abrogating
            their honour.
There is nothing so respected on Solinae as the bonding
ceremony. A couple who have bonded will never have to fear
that another Solinae is attempting to intrude upon that
relationship. It never happens ... EVER ... period. Even a
couple that have not yet made the commitment to bond will be
respected. In the unlikely event that one Solinae wishes to
bond with someone who is in a relationship with another,
they must ask permission from the person's intended, and
even that is considered a serious breach of protocol.
The first official encounter with the Solinae Dominion
was about five years ago. It resulted in a tragic loss of
life, including the starship Cortez. There are rumours,
however, of contact twenty five years ago by a pair of time
travelers. The travelers apparently related a brief visit
to the Solinae homeworld, but the information on the Solinae
culture that they brought back doesn't appear to jibe with
what his currently known of the Solinae. That is, they
reported a culture just on the edge of developing the
impulse drive, but a mere twenty years later, they had warp
capable starships that could complete destroy Federation
            starships.
To date, the only Solinae starship has been seen. It was
comparable to the size and power of an Excelsior class
starship. It is believed, though unproven, that the Solinae
have starships as powerful as Galaxy class starship.
The Federation is of the impression that the Solinae
Dominion (although they often call it the Sycaran Dominion),
is relatively small and consists only of a few systems in
and around the Tasman sector. However, this is just the tip
of the iceberg. The Solinae Dominion consists of thousands
of inhabited worlds, either conquered or colonized. The
edge of the Dominion that borders on the Federation is
            between Cardassian and Romulan space.
This is about the sum total of Federation knowledge. No
treaty boundary exists because the Dominion has not
responded to any Federation attempts at communication
(through subspace radio). There does appear to be a defacto
border at the edge of the Tasman sector. The only known
case of either side crossing that border is the destruction
            of the Cortez.
Being thoroughly Human, the Solinae are perfectly capable
of infiltrating Starfleet or other Federation positions. It
is quite likely that the Solinae have been planting
operatives in the Federation for years now (much like the
Romulans have done). It is almost impossible to detect a
            Solinae spy.

            The Renegades
The Renegade Fleet consists simply of a loose alliance of
starships commanded by officers that have stolen their
vessels from either their own government or another's. They
now operate together under a common flag. The purpose of
said alliance is simply an attitude of, "We'll either all
hang together, or we'll all hang separately." They raid
outposts, colonies and starships, engaging in mostly pirate
activities. Periodically, their attacks will be politically
motivated. They certainly adhere to no prime directive.
This alliance is likely to attract all sorts of
renegades, such as Lursa and B'Etor and other Duras family
supporters who have been effectively exiled from the Empire.
Also, renegades from the Cardassian militia, or the Romulan
military who have become either disillusioned by the
functioning of their governments or officers who believe
they have been passed over for promotion too many times,
would be interested in the Renegade Fleet. Ferengi that
aren't interested in profit, per se, but are interested in
piracy or simply battle or revenge or political intrigue,
all would have a place in the Renegade Fleet. Also
Gatherers that don't want to return to Acamar III would be
            welcome.
Another group that would be interested in the Renegade
Fleet would be Starfleet dropouts like Nicolas Locarno, or
Starfleet officers that no longer believe in the prime
directive. As stated previously, it is generally believed,
although thoroughly unproven, that the informal head of this
band of outlaws is former SCS officer Colonel John
Blacklock. Not a soul has heard of him since his sudden
            departure from Starfleet.

            Stories

Any story that would work in The Next Generation would be
workable for a storyline in Renegades. The same formats
would be used, simply with the Renegades characters.
It is likely that families are now a part of shipboard
life on all Federation starships. As such, the Myrmidon is
likely no exception (although its SCS based missions would
mean that if any starships are exempt from having families,
it would be SCS task force ships).
However, if families are aboard, they must be considered
when writing a story. When a starship is shaken by
disruptor fire from a Romulan warbird, keep in mind that
there are children on the Myrmidon who's entire world is
shaking. The adult officers and their spouses sign on to
service of their own volition and accept the risks
associated with their careers. Their children do not have
such luxuries. They have little or no control over their
lives, and have no clue as to what is going on up on the
bridge. No matter how much their parents prepare them for
what awaits them on a ship, they will never truly be
prepared. This is especially true when the floor suddenly
drops away from their feet, or they are thrown against their
bunk bed because a Romulan commander doesn't like Captain
            DaGama's tone.

            Sets

Wherever possible, existing sets would be reused. The
sets for the transporter rooms, engineering, sickbay, the
observation lounge, ten foreward (or whatever the crew
lounge would be called), corridors, shuttle bays, shuttles,
Jefferies tubes, holodeck, ready room and crew quarters
would remain virtually identical as those used in The Next
Generation, possibly with slight redressing as needed.
The Next Generation episode "Yesterday's Enterprise"
established a main bridge for Ambassador class ships that
was simply a redress of the battle bridge. Such a set could
be used for the main bridge. However, as stated in the Tech
Manual for The Next Generation, there is a tendency to use
replaceable bridge modules. It is quite likely that in the
twenty some years since the Enterprise-C was destroyed, more
updated bridges would have been installed in Ambassador
class ships. It is quite reasonable that a redress of the
current main bridge of the Enterprise-D (possibly made to
look smaller), would function well for the Myrmidon's main
            bridge.
Some new sets that might be worth considering (just to
use up those last dollars out of the budget), would be the
Ops room, new science labs, new computer room, weapons
control room, communications room or the Captain's yacht.

            Models

The most important model, the Myrmidon, would simply be
the Ambassador class model used for the Enterprise-C and the
Excalibur. The same shuttle and/or runabout models could be
used. If a Captain's yacht set is built, that would
necessitate a Captain's yacht model that could be separated
from the bottom of the saucer of the Myrmidon.
If the Myrmidon is to have saucer separation capabilities
and the existing model doesn't provide for this, new models
would be needed for this function (or perhaps a complete
rethink of the saucer separation concept would be in order).
