. i. Potential FAQs about this reference
. --------------------------------------------------------------

. Q: What's a FAQ?
. A: Frequently Asked Question. Next!

. Q: Where did you get all the information for this thing?
. A: Nowhere but the show itself.

. Q: Are all the spellings accurate?
. A: Most of them are. Luckily, I've seen the majority of DS9
. episodes on closed-captioned television. However, there still
. remains some spellings which remain unconfirmed, since I took
. them down using the "spell it like it sounds" method.
. Corrections with *verified* spellings are welcome.

. Q: What's with all the dots on the left margin?
. A: The margins I use for this file aren't read once I send it, or
. any other message, to Usenet--everything gets shoved over to the
. far left, no matter how many spaces or tabs I use. Therefore,
. the dots are to maintain that left margin.

. Q: Is there a version of this file for Star Trek The Next
. Generation?
. A: Technically, yes. I've been keeping files similar to this one
. for my own personal use for TNG since the fourth season of that
. show. However, I feel less comfortable about distributing them
. because the information contained there is verified to a far
. less degree. Not only that, but those files are modeled exactly
. on the format for Jim Shaun Lyon's TNG Encyclopedia, which is
. available on CompuServe. I never saw any updates from Mr. Lyon
. after the third season, so I set about making my own. However,
. the format is *so* close to his, that I don't want people
. mistaking my homemade work for his professional product (he used
. the actual episode scripts for his). I could theoretically re-
. format my files so that they don't look like his, but that would
. take more time and effort than I have right now. Maybe one day.

. Q: I found a mistake! Where do I send it to?
. A: A likely story. On the offchance, my address is:
. scott.hollifield@the-matrix.com
. I'm also the Host of the U'ni Star Trek echo, so messages left
. there will also reach me.

. Q: Why is there so little information here about the main
. characters?
. A: Because to summarize everything the main characters have done in
. the show would be pointless, tedious and difficult. Instead,
. I've chosen only to include details about the main characters'
. lives that are significant, specific trivia, like how many
. times Dax has been a mother. On the other hand, I would like to
. denote each separate appearance of recurring characters like
. Jake, Nog, Rom and Keiko, which I don't think I did *very*
. thoroughly here--so any help in that area would be welcome.

. Q: I haven't seen all the episodes. Are there spoilers here?
. A: YES! Abandon all hope of remaining unspoiled, ye who enter
. here.

. Q: How recent is this particular edition?
. A: This reference covers the entire first season of DS9. An
. update, which combines information on both the first and
. second seasons, will be available after the second season is
. over.

. here. [Q-Less]

Argosian sector : Kira tries pulling up the starcharts for this sector
. up on the station's computer, but charts for the Clocice sector
. come up instead. [Babel]
Bajor : The world orbited by DS9. Its people, the Bajorans, were
. scattered by a Cardassian occupation of the world 41 years ago. It
. has three moons.

Bajor Eight : The lower moon of this planet is where Lursa and B'Etor
. plan to make their rendezvous with Tahna Los. Tahna threatens to
. destroy the planet's six colonies with his bilitrium bomb. [Past
. Prologue]

Bajoran system : Contains fourteen planets, of which Bajor is the
. largest. [The Nagus]

Brax : The people of this world called Q "the god of lies"--affection-
. ately, Q claims. [Q-Less]

. that an asteroid field there contains the location of the changeling
. colony where Croden found the shape-changing pendant. [Vortex]

Clocine sector : Starcharts for this sector come up instead of the
. Argosian sector's charts as Kira requested. [Babel]

Corado One transmitter array : Dax asks the malfunctioning computer to
. link up with the Federation computer database here and elsewhere.
. [The Forsaken]

Dedron system : The nearest star system to the opposite end of the
. wormhole. It's located in the Gamma quadrant. [Emissary]

Deep Space Nine : A space station orbiting Bajor, built by the
. Cardassians during their occupation of that world. Now that the
. Cardassians have withdrawn from the area, Starfleet has moved in to
. assume an administrative capacity over the station. The station,
. abbreviated "DS9", is formally commanded by Cmdr. Benjamin Sisko
. and his first officer, a Bajoran national, Major Kira. Sisko
. discovers a stable wormhole near DS9, and communicates with the
. advanced intelligent lifeform who constructed it.

Denorios Belt : A charged plasma field near Bajor. Dax says that, in
. the 22nd century, the then-current Kai, Toluno, had a vision while
. travelling near there, and that at least five of the ten mysterious
. Orbs were found there. Sisko and Dax explore the area in a
. Runabout shuttle and discover the wormhole which houses the
. "Celestial Temple". Odo was also found in the Belt, and hopes that
. the wormhole holds answers to his origins. [Emissary] It begins
. exhibiting elevated thoron emissions in its plasma field, and
. appears to generate a subspace rift similar to the one that
. destroyed the Hanoli system. [If Wishes Were Horses]

. DS9 also stopped here; Kira believes this is evidence that they are
. still dealing with the Cardassians. [Dramatis Personnae]

Gallitepp : A labor camp on Bajor run by the Cardassians. Kira helped
. liberate it twelve years ago. It was run by Gul Darhe'el, one of
. Cardassia's greatest leaders. Marritza was a filing clerk there.

. Were Horses]

Harig Four : Location of the Sampalo relic in the Latar nebula.
. [Q-Less]

Haru outposts : Raids on these were carried out in Kira's more militant
. past, of which she still has nightmares about. [Past Prologue]

. Mullibok is the moon's last inhabitant, and stubbornly refuses to
. evacuate. [Progress]

Klaestron Four : Curson Dax was here thirty years ago as a mediator

. betraying the government to rebels during that time, and of murdering
. General Ardulon Tandro. [Dax]

. military academy, where he taught filing. He left there on a
. Kohbeerian vessel on its way to DS9. [Duet]

running weapons-grade dolamide to the Cardassians. [Dramatis
Personnae]

Toh'kaht : A Klingon vessel that emerges from the wormhole and promptly
explodes. It was on a bio-survey mission in the Gamma quadrant

as the maze for the game involving Sisko, Dax, Bashir and Kira. Odo
attempts to search it but is blocked from entrance by a force field.
[Move Along Home]

. uneasy truce. The Cardassians finally have withdrawn from the
. Bajoran sector.

Changelings : Croden claims that this is the name of Odo's race, and
. that there was a colony of them on one of the asteroids in the
. Chamra vortex. This turns out to be a lie to get Odo to take him
. there, where his daughter awaits. [Vortex]

Dopterians : A race which are distant cousins of the Ferengi. Odo
. suspected, correctly, that they might share the Ferengi resistance
. to Betazoid telepathy, thus shielding a Dopterian thief at Quark's
. from Lwaxana's notice. [The Forsaken]

. trials. He says that the punishment for being an enemy of the
. people is the death of one's family. [Vortex]

. bought damaged warp drives from him and his cousin Barbo; Barbo was
. left to take the rap. [The Nagus]

Tosk : The name of an alien who visits DS9, it is also the name of his
. position in society. The Tosk are "the hunted", prey of a hunting
. ritual conducted by his people. The Tosk symbolize all that is
. noble about them, explains the hunter to Sisko. [Captive Pursuit]

Trill : The "joined" race of which Lt. Dax is a member. The race
. consists of humanoid hosts who, in order to survive, need the
. cooperation of a reptilian occupant, which is transplated into a new
. host when the old one dies. Dax's previous host was a man named
. Curzon. [Emissary] Dax tells Bashir that cold skin is a
. peculiarity of the Trill. [A Man Alone] Sisko tells Odo that
. Curson Dax had more faults than the "usual socially acceptable"
. Trill. Selin Peers says that Trill hosts are joined with symbionts
. when they are in their early-to-mid 20s. Ninety-three hours after
. they are joined, neither can survive without the other, according to
. Bashir. [Dax]

Valerians : A race which ran weapons-grade dolamide to the Cardassians

. non-Vulcan, according to Bashir. [The Passenger] Nog claims that
. Vulcans stole his homework to Chief O'Brien. [The Nagus]

Wadi : A race with whom a Vulcan ship made first contact. They are the
. first intelligent species from the Gamma Quadrant to be encountered
. by the Federation, and their delegation arrives aboard DS9. They
. don't seem to be interested in doing anything but playing games, and
. introduce to the station a game called "chula". [Move Along Home]

. Prophets.]

. Kira calls her reclusive and says she rarely meets with anyone.
. Still, Opaka summons Sisko, and reveals him to the Bajoran legend
. surrounding the "tears of the prophets". She says that Sisko is the
. "emissary" sent by the prophets, and surely enough, Sisko follows
. through by discovering the wormhole. [Emissary] Opaka accompanies
. Sisko, Bashir and Kira on an expedition through the wormhole. When

. onboard DS9. He knew Kira when they were members of the underground
. together. The Cardassians claim that he is a member of the Kohn-Ma,

. manipulates Kira so that she believes him to be Darhe'el. Darhe'el
. actually died six years ago of a massive coleibric hemmorhage.
. Cardassian records show that Darhe'el was on Cardassia receiving the

. Gallitepp labor camp, Kira believes him to be the camp's overseer,
. Gul Darhe'el, which is what Marritza secretly wants Kira to
. believe. The truth that eventually comes out is that he really is
. Marritza, and really was a filing clerk at Gallitepp; he feels
. enormous guilt at the atrocities committed there, however, and
. wants to be believed as Darhe'el so the truth about Cardassia's
. brutality will be pushed further into the light of public scrutiny.
. As he is leaving the station, however, Marritza is killed by a
. Bajoran man named Kainon. [Duet]
