John Ackermann AG9V

jra@lawdept.daytonOH.ncr.com -or- jra@ag9v.ampr.org

My primary interests are in packet radio network building (particularly
higher speed stuff) and TCP/IP. I've got quite a lot of info on using
the Kantronics D4-10 19.2kB radios, as that's the hardware we've been
struggling with here.

TAPR (Tuscon Amateur Packet Radio) has formed a special interest group
to discuss issues of regional packet networking (Net-SIG). As a result,
the TAPR net-sig mailing list was born, and is now ready for operation.

This list is <not> intended to replace any of the existing packet-related
mailing lists. Its purpose is provide a medium for communications among
those interested in packet radio networking, both dealing with technical
issues and political/regulatory ones. We'll discuss things like how the
potential 219MHz band will fit into the networking picture, how to link
areas using different networking schemes, how to set network parameters,
etc. The list's charter will be posted there regularly.

The address of the list is net-sig@tapr.org and you can subscribe by sending
mail to listserv@tapr.org with the text "join netsig".

Apart from subscribing to the list, you can contact me for further details
about the Net-SIG (including upcoming conferences).

Owner of QRP-L Mailing List

The QRP mailing list is open for discussion of any subjects relating to
low-power amateur radio operation. Example topics: portable operation,
equipment design and construction, solar and battery power, QRPp,
contesting, kit building, etc.

This list was started by me with an announcement on the
rec.radio.amateur.misc USENET group in early 1993. Bruce Walker, WT1M,
maintained the mailing lists and FTP area from then through August 1994
on a system at Thinking Machines Inc., think.com. Then it was moved to
qrp-l@netcom.com until May 14th, 1995. Thanks to Mike Ardai, N1IST, for
all his hard work during the time that QRP-L was on netcom.com.

I am still the keeper of the non-electronic archives, including copies
of some schematics, etc. Contact me directly or watch this list for
more info.

To subscribe, send E-mail to:

     listserv@lehigh.edu

and in the body of the message, write:

     SUBSCRIBE QRP-L your_name your_call

where "your_name" is your real name, and "your_call" is your callsign,
if any. For example:

     SUBSCRIBE QRP-L John Doe K5FJZ

A welcome message with more detailed help will follow shortly.

Writing (for newsletters and ARRL publications)

My job at as QST Features Editor at ARRL HQ includes (among other
things) writing and editing general-interest feature articles for QST,
and writing the FM column, Up Front in QST and Strays.

I'm the "handling editor" (copy editor+) for other regular columns
conducted by other contributors, including Packet Perspective by Stan
Horzepa, WA1LOU; Public Service by Rick Palm, K1CE; Club Spectrum and
Section News by Steve Ewald, WV1X; How's DX? by Bill Kennamer, K5FUV;
Happenings by Jim Cain, K1TN; Contest Corral and Special Events by
Warren Stankiewicz, NF1J; Hamfest Calendar and Coming Conventions by
Gail Iannone; most of the contest rules announcements and results
articles; and I compile the Annual Index in the December issue.

I coordinate and often contribute to the New Books reviews and New
Products listings scattered throughout the magazine, and often
contribute to QST Product Reviews. I also wrote the "Modes" chapter in
the 1995 ARRL Handbook and chapters in the ARRL Operating Manual, and
I've contributed to several other publications, including W1FB's Help
for New Hams (ARRL) and Ham Radio Horizons (CQ Communications).

I started working at ARRL HQ as QST Copy Editor in December 1989.

I'm 37 years old, I've been a ham since 1976 and I hold an Amateur
Extra Class license. I'm a member of the ARRL, the ARRL A-1 Operator
Club, Ten-Ten International Net (53313), and the Middlesex Amateur
Radio Society/Connecticut Amateur Radio Emergency Service (MARS/CARES,
an ARRL Special Service Club, in which I served two terms as president
and a couple of years as newsletter editor). I'm also an ARRL Public
Information Officer for the Connecticut Section. These days, most of
my on-air time is limited to 2-meter and 440-MHz FM and 2-meter TCP/IP
packet radio, although I crank up the HF rig when I can spare some
time and try to join in VHF/UHF contests when I have the time and
access to equipment. My favorite Amateur Radio activity is Field
Day; the MARS/CARES club has a terrific time with that event every
year.

I have about 10 years' experience with personal computers, including
MS-DOS, Windows and IBM OS/2. I was a full-time professional commercial
broadcaster for 12 years.

My latest volunteer public service project is that I'm the official
Amateur Radio Liaison the the 1995 Special Olympics World Games, to be
held in Connecticut. I report to Dr Chuck Bruder, N3AGA, the Special
Olympics' Deputy Commissioner of Telecommunications. (This is supposed
to be literally the biggest event in the US in 1995, and possibly the
world! They expect 10,000-15,000 athletes, 45,000 international
delegates from almost all nations, more than 500,000 spectators, about
20 hours of prime-time network TV coverage, and probably a visit from
President Clinton and the First Lady...whew!)

Well, I've been talking about it for years. Those of you that have
talked with me via E-mail know that. But this time I've actually
started on my rewrite of the callsign server at Buffalo. And I've
finally got a design that I'm happy with. The new searching
capabilities are going to be *much* improved over the current system.
I'll be getting rid of the bugs in the current telnet system and making
it available to more people. Also coming is a WWW front-end for web
surfers. Time to step into the 90s.

Part of the rewrite is an entire reorganization of the database look-up
system. The old system was very specific to the FCC database format
because that's all that was available when it was written (yes, the
server is very, very old). But now there are a number of databases
floating around the net for different countries and I am rewriting the
system to be more flexible and to accommodate a variety of formats and
search types.

In doing so, I'll have the ability to add data for many more countries.
That is, of course, if I have the data. In order to do this I need
help. I need to get in touch with all people that have access to
databases from countries other than the US. The more up-to-date these
databases are, the better. If you have access to a database and would be
willing to donate a copy to the callsign server for everyone to use,
please contact me. A lot of people would genuinely appreciate it.

The callsign server has become remarkably popular on the net and this
has happened because the community has contributed so much to it over
the many years it's been running. I have heard stories of reunions with
old classmates, stories of silent-keys that have been remembered, and
stories from blind hams doing simple look-ups of other hams, all
possible because of the server. Congratulations to the community for
making this system so useful.

Look for the new server in two or three months. Until then you can
access the current one.

Please direct all other feedback, submissions and administrivia
regarding these services to my E-mail address above.

My electronics expertise is mostly analog, but I have some insights into
DSP applications that can do better in what used to be the analog
dominions. I can be of the most help with low-frequency analog stuff,
particularly measurements and low-level/low-noise/low-distortion
applications. I breadboard with IC's, discretes, and surface mounts
(which I prefer to use now, as surface mounting requires less drilling
of PCB boards once they are etched). My electrical engineering
education (Ph.D.) emphasized control systems. I also have a clear
understanding of transmission line measurements and behavior (a
personal research interest for the last 25 years or so).

GRAPES 56 kBaud Packet Radio Modems

I'm not an official representative of the Georgia Radio Amateur Packet
Enthusiasts Society (GRAPES), but I am in contact with them, and have
experience using their 56 kBaud radio modems. At the very least, I can
forward requests I can't handle to the proper people.

The Proceedings of the 6th Computer Networking Conference has a paper by
WA4DSY explaining the theory and practice of the 56 kBaud radio modem.
(I think it's the 6th, I don't have my copy handy.)

GRAPES furnishes instructions for modifying a TNC2 to drive the modem,
but there are better solutions. The Ottawa PI card and the Gracilis
PacketTwin card are two good solutions. Of course they are PC bus
cards. If you need standalone capability, the Kantronics Data Engine
can handle it, as can the incredible Gracilis PacketTen. PacComm claims
their new Sprint TNC can, too (PacComm now also manufactures the
Gracilis cards under license and you can get them either from them or
from Gracilis direct).

WA4DSY has interfaced raw telco codecs to the modems and done
"digital voice" while mobile. It works quite well.

If you want information on the RF modem (full document sets are $20,
creditable towards a later order) write to GRAPES at

GRAPES, Inc
PO Box 636
Griffin, GA 30224-0636

GRAPES is a volunteer networking organization. There's no phone number,

My primary experience is with HF communications, particularly with the
Kenwood TS-830S and TS-940/AT. My preferred mode is CW, although I
also use SSB. I have had experience with light service on both rigs
(including the internal antenna tuner on the 940 and the tube finals
on the 830). I have the service manual for the 940.

I am particularly interested in helping new hams design and set up HF
stations with multi-band wire antenna arrays.

Other than HF, I am also involved in VHF and UHF, particularly 2
meters, and have recently gotten involved in packet radio (having
gained some experience on the hardware end of setting up such a
station).

I've played around with Mac and PC hardware, as well as dabbling a
little with DOS, UNIX, and MacOS.

I co-maintain the Boston Amateur Radio Club anonymous FTP file archives
with Phil Temples, K9HI (k9hi@netcom.com).

A sampling of the archives include:

A virtually complete archive of all ARRL bulletins since 1992 is
available at ftp://oak.oakland.edu:/pub/hamradio/barc/w1aw-list/

A mirror of all files available from the ARRL info server is also
available: ftp://oak.oakland.edu/pub/hamradio/arrl/infoserver/

The ARRL infoserver mirror has FCC Part 97 (U.S. Amateur Radio Service
Rules and Regulations) at:

Programs mentioned in QST are in:
ftp://oak.oakland.edu/pub/hamradio/arrl/qst-binaries/

Amateur Radio Newsline is now also being archived, too:
ftp://oak.oakland.edu/pub/hamradio/docs/newsline/

Macintosh Amateur Radio Software Archive:
ftp://oak.oakland.edu/pub/hamradio/mac/

Ham Radio and More, the radio show carried live every Sunday (6pm - 7pm
EST) on the Talk America Radio Network, now has a World Wide Web home page:

http://www.acs.oakland.edu/barc/ham-more/ham-more.html

The Boston Amateur Radio Club also has a World Wide Web Home Page:

http://www.acs.oakland.edu/barc.html

Due to the popularity of the KY1N VE listing and W1GSL's hamfest list,
I have incorporated both of these listings into the Boston Amateur Radio
Club's Web page:

http://www.acs.oakland.edu/barc/ne-happenings.html

With the cooperation of the Boston Amateur Radio Club, I have put
together a World-Wide Web page for the American Radio Relay League
(ARRL).

Since the ARRL does not yet have web capabilities of their own, this page
is being offered on the same site as the Boston Amateur Radio Club's web
page.

The address to access the page is:

http://www.acs.oakland.edu/barc/arrl.html

It has pointers to the ARRL Letter, E-mail addresses of HQ staff,
official League bulletins, and much more!

You will need Lynx, WWW, or Mosaic to view them (or you may obtain a
copy of the page via E-mail; send a message to listserv@info.cern.ch
with the word "help" in the body for more information). Ask me for
more details about this.

management capabilities. Since its introduction in 1991, Kentrol has
set the standard for Windows-based rig automation, and new features
continue to be added regularly. SkedMan is an automated sked manager

I am into public service, and also ARES/RACES. I am the Emergency
Coordinator for both organizations in Sonoma Valley, Sonoma county, San
Francisco Section of California.

We do ARES and RACES as one program here, and actually lean more towards
RACES because the government entities are so supportive.

I like to encourage newer hams to participate in the events for which I
coordinate the communications. It's ideal training for emergency
services, and it's fun, too. Codeless Technicians who can't participate
on most HF NTS traffic nets have a real role to play here, as we
generally use VHF and UHF, and these amateurs are instrumental with
their enthusiasm in filling the rosters.

It's also sometimes a good initiator for those new hams who are
self-conscious talking with other, experienced hams one-on-one, but are
OK talking formally to a net control station. Similarly, I try to
encourage those new hams who became hams so they could talk to their ham
spouses, and all you ever hear them do is talk to their spouses and to
no-one else. While that's perfectly OK in and of itself, public service
is a good way to break out of that mold and get more fun from radio
while really helping out.

ARRL Laboratory Engineer

Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) matters
Equipment Testing

My survey of automotive EMI problems is mostly complete. The results
are in September 1994 QST, including warranty and customer service
information for most automobile manufacturers (many of whom have
published installation guidelines).

I am also continuing to pursue more formal contacts and standards-making
through the EMR and EMI Standards Committee of the Society of Automotive
Engineers (SAE), of which I am a member.

Copies of General Motors installation guidelines are available. Saturn
allegedly has a video on mobile installation, but none of the dealers
seem to know about it. I have a call into one of my low friends in high
places. :-)

If anyone would like a copy of the GM installation guidelines, send a
9X12" SASE with two units of postage *and* a specific request for the
"GM Installation Guidelines" to the ARRL Technical Department Secretary,
225 Main St, Newington, CT 06111. A copy has been reprinted in the ARRL
book -- Radio Frequency Interference -- How to Find It and Fix It.

EMI/RFI Resource List and RFI Tips package available. A business SASE
with 98 cents postage is appreciated. Please specify the desired
documents in your correspondence.

The FCC has released the results of a telephone interference survey
just completed.

If you would like a copy of the survey, which includes a list of
telephone models checked, send an SASE with two units of first class
postage to the Technical Information Service at ARRL HQ. Alternatively,
you may obtain an electronic copy from the info server below.

If leakage from your local Cable TV operator is interfering with the
Amateur Radio Service, it is in violation of the provisions of Part 76
of the FCC regulations.

I would first direct the problem toward the cable company system
engineer or service manager. Chances are the "front-line" people who
answer the phone don't know what you are talking about.

If this is not effective, contact me here at ARRL HQ. I can put you in
contact with our liaison to the National Cable Telecasters Association.
This liaison will help your cable operator understand their
responsibilities.

For CATV interference problems in general, I recommend you obtain our
Radio Frequency Interference Book. If you are a League Member, you can
also get a copy of the ARRL Technical Information Service info package
on CATVI -- "EMI/RFI - CATV" by sending a LARGE SASE with 3 stamps on it
to the ARRL Technical Department Secretary, 225 Main St, Newington CT
06111. This package is a reprint of an article I wrote for
Communications Technology -- the Journal of the Society of Cable
Television Engineers. We submitted it to "their" journal because we
felt that it would carry more weight with the cable companies.

If you have any questions after you have read the material, contact me
here at HQ. I can usually get back to you within a few days to offer
some additional help.

Many amateur radio informational documents (including EMI/RFI files) are
also available from the ARRL info server. Send E-mail to info@arrl.org
with the word "HELP" in the message body.

See Scott Ehrlich's entry for information about the ARRL Anonymous FTP
Archive and World-Wide Web Home Page.

Areas of expertise: QRP work
                    mobile operation
                    computers (DOS, OS/2, Linux)
                    Packet Radio
                    wire antennas

I am an EE student at the University of Erlangen-Nuernberg, Germany. I
am active in the university ham radio club (IG-Funk), spending time and
thoughts in improving the permanent club display in the lecture hall
building. So I have some first hand experience in making printouts and
display arrangements visually appealing.

My main interests are shortwave, especially QRP, and computers (Packet
Radio, Internet). I have some experience in shortwave mobiling and
considerable success with a modified citizens band whip on the bands
from 10 to 20 meters. Generally I am fascinated with simple yet
effective equipment, hence my obsession with QRP. I like wire
antennas. I feel that over the course of time I will more and more learn
to appreciate old ham radio equipment (boatanchors) and get more into
homebrewing.

I've compiled a list of QRP Clubs worldwide and a FAQ file for the
QRP-L mailing list. They are available from the QRP-L WWW Pages at:

http://ncc1701-d.cc.nd.edu/qrp-l/index.html
http://www.lehigh.edu/lists/Archives/qrp-l/ (on or after June 1, 1995)

The QRP-L mailing list is intended to be a relatively noise-free
environment for discussion of any subjects relating to low-power amateur
radio operation. Example topics: portable operation, equipment design
and construction, solar and battery power, QRPp, contesting, kit
building.

                                 ___
Standard calling signal: CWIST IMI DE <yourcall> K (if there
are no control stations calling for
                           you to check in), or,
CWIST DE <yourcall> K (if there is a

DE to get the control station's ears
followed by DE <yourcall> K when the
                           control station acknowledges.)

Note: A simple informal net style protocol will generally be
used, unless no control station assumes control for the
evening, in which case it is an open roundtable format
        discussion group.

Note: The midnight local time gathering is designed to maximize
the number of checkins spread out over the world, so less
confusion and more checkins are heard. The hope is that
someone will be aboard almost anywhere and be heard at
least locally, anywhere in the world.

Definition: A CWIST is a person with an active interest in the PRACTICE
and USE of continuous wave radiotelegraphy as directly is
applicable to amateur radio. Such PRACTICE and USE may
take the form of learning about radiotelegraphy and its
history in amateur/commercial areas, its application to radio
telecommunication, the practicing of the art and craft of
radiotelegraphy, and the refining and developing of the
             technology of radiotelegraphy.

Author of NA4G's National Electrical Code for Hams

                                 ABSTRACT

This work was presented as a talk to the Homebrew Special
Interest Group (HB-SIG) of the Raleigh Amateur Radio Society
(RARS), on 15 January, 1991 and was revised for another
        presentation on 26 January, 1994.

This document contains excerpts of the National Electrical
Code (NFPA 70-1990) that, in the author's opinion, apply to
the installation of amateur radio equipment as would
commonly be found in most amateur radio stations. Direct
excerpts from the Code are contained within inset
quotations. Paraphrased excerpts from the Code are
itemized. The author's interpretation and discussion of the
Code is set full-width. The author's interpretation and
discussion of various sections of the Code is not meant to
be all-encompassing, nor the official interpretation of the
National Fire Protection Association, nor of any official
governing body having legal authority of jurisdiction over
electrical installations, but is meant to be used as a
teaching tool for amateur radio operators.

Currently the posting of these articles have been suspended indefinitely
(and will probably be removed from the above sites shortly). New
editors are being actively sought to take over maintenance of the above
resources and keep them from disappearing from the net permanently. As
with any volunteer effort, new volunteers are often needed. We need new
editors to post the above FAQ's. Preferably this should be someone who
has enthusiasm for hobbyist radio, experience with Usenet, and the
ability to work with the other editors. No single person can know all
the various aspects of these diverse hobbies so the editorial review
groups are intended to make a greater combination of experience.

The FAQ's were posted with the AUTO-FAQ software, which is written in
Perl. So it would be a plus for volunteers to post the FAQ to have Perl
installed on their system and be able to use "cron" or "at" so that
postings can go unattended.

Most transfer protocols are available!! (5 phone lines)

I attempt to keep the latest and greatest HAM software on-line, and
encourage all to upload anything new that they come up with, as it is
of benefit to all. Here is a sample of the software that is available
for downloading:

KA9Q TCP/IP Software for the PC (Latest OFFICIAL release + TEST Versions)
 KA9Q TCP/IP for the Atari-ST, MAC, & Amiga
KA9Q TCP/IP for UNIX based systems
KA9Q TCP/IP (The NOS release) [UNIX, MS/DOS, Amiga]

 Several MORSE CODE Tutors
 TheNet software by NORD><LINK
Modifications for many HAM Rigs and Scanners
 Digital Signal Processing software (DSP)
 DX and contesting programs

If you are interested in using UUCP to connect to the BBS, this can
also be done as I support Anon-uucp. The login to the system is
'uucpanon', and there is NO password. The listing of available archives
are stored in a file called 'FILES', and it is located in the
/var/spool/uucppublic. To retrieve the files listing just use the
following command:

uucp wb3ffv!~/FILES /usr/spool/uucppublic (ASCII Text)
                -or-
uucp wb3ffv!~/FILES.Z /usr/spool/uucppublic (16-Bit Compressed)
                -or-
uucp wb3ffv!~/FILES.gz /usr/spool/uucppublic (GNU Gzipped)

This will move a copy of my file listing into your uucppublic
directory.

If you want to access the BBS via Telnet, all you have to do is access:

telnet://wb3ffv1.sed.csc.com/

and login is 'bbs' with no password required.

To use anonymous FTP, just access:

ftp://wb3ffv1.sed.csc.com/

and login as 'anonymous' (may not be necessary, depending on your FTP
client). This system is currently attached to the Internet via a dialup
SLIP link, and should generally be available 24hrs, but at times the
modem will drop the line. Also, since this isn't the fastest link, I
will be limiting the maximum number of anonymous sessions for the
moment.

QRZ CDROM. Can help arrange volume discounts for clubs and groups, and
will donate copies of QRZ to qualifying non-profit organizations. Send
E-mail or call +1 602 483-2036.

We now have the QRZ FTP archive and QRZ WWW server online, 24 hours a
day. Our connection is via a T1 line so you should get pretty decent
file transfer times.

We've got about 7,000 files online, including radio mods, software, most
everything imaginable. We are also accepting uploads of all ham radio
related material.

Feel free to stop by and have a look:

ftp://ftp.qrz.com/
http://www.qrz.com/ (WWW interface to the FTP archive as well as a
                     Callsign database server)

Authors of ham radio shareware programs, data files, mods, etc., are
invited to contribute their materials to the QRZ anonymous ftp server
above.

I would also like to thank those who have volunteered in helping port
the QRZ source code to a wide variety of platforms. In the next
edition, we'll have support for DOS, Windows, OS/2, Windows NT, Sun, NeXT,
SGI, Linux, AIX, and HP/UX executables, directly on the disk.

Notably not mentioned is Macintosh, which so far has been a bit
troublesome to put together. If anyone who can program in 'C' on a
Macintosh would care to volunteer, please let me know. Although there
is an experimental Mac interface at this time, I'd like to make it an
officially-supported platform.

Please pass on any ideas, suggestions, comments, etc., to my E-mail
address above.

Treasurer for the Cyclone Amateur Radio Club

A few members of our ham radio club were interested in helping out.
Since our turnover is usually 4 years or so (graduation is a horrible
thing), I thought it may be difficult for us to keep the list up to
date. I thought that by creating a local mailing list called
"elmers@iastate.edu" we could add or remove people as need be. There
would always be at least one person receiving mail on that list,
usually more! Even after I graduate, this list will be maintained
allowing ISU hams to easily help others.

Currently we have people with packet experience, some HF experience,
much repeater experience, in addition to a considerable background in
theory, as many here are electrical engineering or computer engineering
students. If a question can not be answered by the readers of the list,
there are many other local hams that could be prodded for the info.

Our local ham radio club has been especially interested in helping local
disabled hams (or hams to be) get on the air. But anyone local who
needed help would find a group at their door ready to work.

I have a collection of service information and literature dating back
to the 1920's. I will be happy to assist those needing copies of
out-of-copyright information for specific makes and models of
receivers, transmitters, test equipment, etc..

The collection spans commercial, amateur, and military surplus gear of all
types. Unfortunately I have not taken the time to catalog all this
information, but it is logically filed by make, model, etc.

If you need service information for a specific piece of equipment, (and
I have the information in my collection) I will research and copy it for
you. Cost will vary depending on the time required to find the
information and the amount of pages to be copied. I estimate 10 pages
or less at $1.00/page including US postage. I will quote on larger
manuals.

This is NOT my career or a business. Any requests must be prepaid or I
will ship COD at additional postage costs.

Maintainer of Linux for Hams CDROM

What Is Linux for Hams?

Linux for Hams is a full-featured Linux system with special additions
for Amateur Radio. The system includes all of the sophisticated
software that one would expect on one of today's engineering
workstations, along with software for packet radio communication,
electronic design, printed-circuit manufacture, a database of FCC rules
and license exams, a code-practice program, and other Amateur Radio
applications.

The general-purpose software includes software for connecting to the
Internet, compilers for the C and C++ languages, a full-featured
typesetting system, a symbolic mathematics program, CD-ROM authoring
tools, and many other programs. Unlike other Amateur Radio software
collections, Linux for Hams is an integrated system. The programs are
already compiled and configured to work together with the rest of the
system.

Linux for Hams is being built by Bruce Perens AB6YM, with the help of
several volunteers. Of course, it builds on the work of the thousands of
volunteers who helped create Linux and the other programs it contains.

The system will be available for free if you download it using FTP. A
low-cost CD will be available, for about $30.
Free CD-ROM Subscription for Volunteers

Most of the software in Linux for Hams is free software, contributed by
its author for anyone to use. I would like to compensate those authors
for their work. If you are the author of a significant piece of software
included in Linux for Hams, please e-mail to Perens@Rahul.net. You may
be be able to get a free CD-ROM subscription to Linux for Hams.

Bruce Perens AB6YM reserves the right to decide who gets free
subscriptions, what is included in a free subscription, and for how long
those subscriptions last.

The magazine's E-mail address and mine are the same: ATVQ. There is
also a ham radio section for "manufacturers and dealers" on America
On-Line in which we list Amateur Television Quarterly, as expert and
manufacturer. That is where most of the Frequently-Asked Questions
(FAQ's) come from.

Most FAQ's are answered in one of two books we published. ATV
Secrets for Aspiring ATV'ers is a non technical book, and Volume II is a
300-page technical manual with theory and projects for all equipment
necessary to operate an ATV station. Prices are $9.95 and $24.95 plus
postage ($3.10). Most of your inquires can be answered by either of
these two books.

I am also compiling a set of W6ORG Notes, a regular column in ATVQ,
which answers many of the technical FAQ's on various equipment and
operations. This will be available for $9.95 also.

I can try to answer questions on here, and frequently do, but time is
expensive and limited!

I believe that one of the pillars of ham radio - construction/
understanding at the burn-your-hand-with-a-soldering-iron level - is
drifting out of ham radio. With Japanese radios which cost so much,
fewer and fewer hams are willing to risk their warranty to service their

ARRL Technical Information Service Coordinator (tis@arrl.org)
ARRL Email Information Server SysOp (info@arrl.org)

The ARRL Technical Information Service (TIS) is a valuable membership
benefit that helps hams find answers to difficult technical questions.

The answer to a ham's most common technical questions can be found in
one of the many books about Amateur Radio. Folks who call or write to
ARRL TIS staff are often referred to one of these books or to a past
magazine article.

However, most hams find that the fastest way to get the answer is to do
their own research. Publication catalogs often talk about what kinds of
information are available in different books. A few good books will
answer the vast majority of questions as well as enhance a ham's
knowledge and enjoyment of this fascinating hobby.

Magazines are also a superb technical reference. An annual index of
articles appears in the December issue of QST and other magazines.
These indexes will usually have an article or two (or six) about a
particular topic. If an older QST or QEX article is not available
locally, the ARRL Technical Department Secretary can provide a copy for
a small fee. Back issues are also available from the QST Circulation
Department.

The ARRL Technical Information Service is a valuable source of
information and research for questions that cannot be answered by other
means. ARRL TIS has information packages and bibliographies that are
available on request to answer most technical questions.

For those who want to know if something has been previously published on
a particular subject, TIS can also assist with research to locate this
information. TIS also helps locate companies that sell hard to find
parts or supplies used in our hobby.

Many amateur radio informational documents are also available from the
ARRL Email Information Server (or Info-Server for short). To find out
how to use the Info-Server, send E-mail to info@arrl.org with any
subject (it is ignored) and the following text in the body of the
message:

I just upgraded to Advanced, and am now working on Extra. Was first
licensed about ten months ago.

What I've learned:

1) How to operate HF from your apartment without being evicted
2) How to pass tests, both written and code
3) How to make a virtue out of the necessity of your limited equipment,
and enjoy the process while doing it

I operate CW HF exclusively. The only time I get to operate is when the
baby is asleep, so the XYL demands silent running. Besides, with my
wimpy wire, there is little point in trying to run voice.

AMSAT-NA (the Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation in North America)
operates the Internet host AMSAT.ORG to provide for efficient
communications between people interested in the amateur satellite
program. At this time two services are provided: a message remailing
service and a mailing list service.

In addition, the AMSAT World-Wide Web home page provides interactive
access to a variety of information related to the amateur radio
satellite program. Use your Web browser program (e.g., Mosaic) to
access the URL:

http://www.amsat.org/amsat/AmsatHome.html

Anonymous FTP is available from:

ftp://ftp.amsat.org/amsat/

This archive contains much of the same information as the WWW server.
In addition, various files and programs are available for anonymous
FTP. This is a relatively new archive, so the older FTP site:

ftp://ftp.ucsd.edu/hamradio/

still has lots of files not available there.

The message remailing service permits users to send each other mail
on the Internet without keeping track of each other's Internet
address. The remailing service allows each user to receive mail sent
to the address callsign@amsat.org, where callsign is that user's
amateur radio callsign, or other unique identifier. Mail sent to
that address will be routed first to the AMSAT.ORG host at UCSD in
San Diego, then remailed from AMSAT.ORG to the network address
specified by the user. In most cases, this process delays the
message by only a very few minutes.

The mailing list service groups subscribers into mailing lists to
receive certain types of messages. There are public mailing lists
available to anyone, and private mailing lists available only to
certain people (for example, AMSAT Board of Directors members or
PACSAT command stations). Currently the following public mailing
lists exist:

   ANS AMSAT News Service

This mailing list carries official news releases from
the AMSAT News Service. These messages are posted in
a form suitable for direct posting to a packet radio
BBS system. Each message contains a Bulletin Identifier
(BID), which permits the message to be introduced into
the packet network at many places without resulting in
duplicate bulletins at any BBS. The primary purpose of
this mailing list is to distribute ANS bulletins for
redistribution (via the packet net or on AMSAT voice
nets), but individuals may also subscribe for their own
use. If your local packet BBS doesn't seem to get the
ANS bulletins reliably, you are encouraged to post the
  ANS bulletins yourself.

Only authorized AMSAT News Service personnel should
send messages to the ANS mailing list.

   AMSAT-BB AMSAT bulletin board

This mailing list carries general AMSAT information.
This information may NOT be suitable in content for
transmission via amateur radio, so automatic reposting
of AMSAT-BB messages to packet radio BBS's is discouraged.
The purpose of this mailing list is to provide a forum
for general discussion of any satellite-related topic.

Anyone may send messages to the AMSAT-BB mailing list.
Simply address your message to amsat-bb@amsat.org, and
it will be automatically forwarded to all subscribers
  to the AMSAT-BB mailing list.

Editors of publications should ask permission of the
sender before publishing anything seen in AMSAT-BB
elsewhere, unless the posting was obviously a public
press release. However, posters should realize that
anything posted to AMSAT-BB is essentially public.

   KEPS Keplerian Elements mailing list

This mailing list carries official postings of Keplerian
element sets for satellites of interest to radio amateurs.
Like the ANS bulletins, these messages are posted in a
form suitable for direct posting to a packet radio BBS.

Only authorized AMSAT News Service personnel should
send messages to the KEPS mailing list.

NASAINFO NASA related information mailing list

This mailing list contains information about current
and planned NASA space missions. Be forewarned: at times
this mailing list delivers many large messages.

SAREX Shuttle Amateur Radio Experiment mailing list

This mailing list contains information and press releases
                pertaining to SAREX missions.

To obtain any of these services, just send a message to the address

 listserv@amsat.org

This address may be reached from CompuServe MAIL as:

 >INTERNET:listserv@amsat.org

For the moment, the maintenance of the AMSAT.ORG mailing lists and
remailing aliases is done manually. Later, this service will
probably be automated and you will have to follow a strict message
format. For now, you may send requests in free format. They will
usually be processed within a few days. In general, you will not
receive an explicit reply to your request. Be sure you specify:

        1. Which mailing list(s) you want to receive

        2. Your callsign, if any

        3. The Internet address to be used, if different from the
           one in your From: header.

You should not send messages about your subscriptions to any of the
mailing lists. Send them to listserv@amsat.org instead. This
includes questions, requests for changes, requests for information
about mailing services, and complaints.

The list of amateurs who may be reached via the message remailing
service may be obtained by requesting the "address book". Note that
the address book as distributed contains only the callsigns of the
available addressees, not their actual Internet addresses. The address
book is updated occasionally, and does not necessarily contain the very
latest information.

You may request to be added to the list, to be deleted from the list,
or to have your Internet address changed on the list. Please include
your callsign if you have one. If you don't have a callsign, that's
OK, but please say so. If you have more than one Internet address
you want to have available on the AMSAT.ORG remailer, you may so
specify. For instance, if you have a regular Internet address and a
CompuServe account, you may appear in the address book as both w1xyz
and w1xyz-cis. Mail sent to w1xyz would go to your Internet address,
and mail sent to w1xyz-cis would go to CompuServe. MCImail accounts
have the form w1xyz-mci, and so on.

You may also subscribe or unsubscribe to any of the public mailing
lists described above. Send a message to listserv@amsat.org,
specifying clearly which mailing list(s) you want to add or drop, and
giving your callsign if you have one. When you subscribe to a
mailing list, you will automatically be added to the remailing
service as well, because the mailing lists are maintained by
callsign. If you have more than one address listed in the remailing
service, please indicate which one(s) you want the mailing list
messages sent to.

Additional mailing lists, public or private, can be set up as needed.
Send mail to listserv@amsat.org for details.

Questions about any service offered by AMSAT.ORG may be directed to
listserv@amsat.org as well.

Please note that the AMSAT business office is separate from mailing
list maintenance. You may address membership requests to
martha@amsat.org, or send them by mail, phone, or fax to AMSAT

An experimental search and submission front-end is available at:

http://www.acs.ncsu.edu/scripts/HamRadio/repeaterdb.perl

As far as I am aware, all the data is freely redistributable and my
intent is to make sure it stays that way. For this reason, I have
applied the GNU General Public License.

The repeater project will now include repeaters from ALL bands and
is not limited to the US. This reflects the intent to make this
directory universal.

Contributions of data may be made by anonymous ftp to:

ftp://mipgsun.mipg.upenn.edu/pub/yee/uploads/

or via email to yee@mipg.upenn.edu

The data format has not been changed from the old format so
contributions that you were planning to make (prior to my recent
troubles) are still current and most welcome. This repeater listing
will be of use if people take an active part in making it accurate and
useful.
