Ameritech is almost as busy as Santa and his elves this holiday season as
the communications giant blitzes the northwest suburbs to publicize the new
 847 area code.

Ameritech employees have fanned out to shopping malls and rail stations,
passing out hundreds of thousands of pamphlets and trinkets. The company
also is using a large traveling exhibit to remind residents that the area
code change will take effect Jan. 20 for about 2 million people.
Spring Hill Mall in West Dundee was the latest stop for the company's
area code exhibit, which lists the new area codes and the dates and areas
in which they will be introduced.
In the coming days, the exhibit will appear at all major shopping malls,
train stations and community events in the northwest suburbs.

"The purpose of all this is to make sure customers are well-informed
about the fact that their area codes will be changing," said Lisa Kim, an
 Ameritech spokeswoman.
The exhibit and the brochures are part of Ameritech's recently launched
 $6 million public-education campaign.
The 847 area code will cover Cook County suburbs north and northwest of
the city, most of Lake County, the portion of McHenry County currently in
the 708 area code and the northern portion of Kane County.

The other new area code, 630, will be introduced in August. It will
serve DuPage County and the portions of Kendall and Will Counties currently
 in 708.
As each new area code is introduced, customers will be given a
three-month grace period so that callers can be reached at their old or new
 numbers.
Because of the technical problems involved in the change, Ameritech said
some customers also will have to get new telephone numbers. Those customers
will be given an extended grace period until next November, when new
 telephone directories are published.

Ameritech officials remain locked in a dispute with the Village of
Schaumburg over the changing of telephone numbers as well as the area code.
The Illinois Commerce Commission is reviewing Schaumburg's request to
stop the number-change plan or at least drastically alter it. An ICC
decision is not expected until early next year.
Under Ameritech's plan, the largest number of changes will be in
Schaumburg, where more than 23,000 numbers will have to be changed.

The other suburbs in which customers will have to change their
telephone numbers as well as get new area codes are Elk Grove Village
(6,000 number changes), Streamwood (1,200), Bartlett (750), Burr Ridge
 (450) and Wayne (90).
