Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law,

That which you hold in your hands is the completed form of a
research project that has dominated the last six months of my life.
The writing of a dictionary is not the most glamorous or exiting form
of research that one who practices the work can come upon, no great
insights are required, no dramatic flair or grace as is sometimes
experienced in ritual, no epiphany, only a lot of mind numbing data
entry and repetitive cross referencing over a long period of time.
This is not a work of genius or art; it is, though, something I feel
pride in (and relief at the completion of.) It is a tool to be used
for further research and it is my hope that it will serve to help free
myself and others from the toil of coalating some of the raw data
contained in Dee's diaries so that we can get on with the work of
self-transformation that the Enochian system facilitates so well. I
did not want to write this book and if I had access to the information
it contains I would not have writen it.

This text came into being as a result of my total dissatisfaction
with the vast majority of published work on Dee's angelic
conversations. The small minority of reliable published sources are,
in order of value, Casaubon's True and Faithful Relation {that is, if
you completely ignore the introduction}, Geofrey James' Enochian
Evocation, and the works of Robert Turner; none of which contain a
dictionary or gematric cross referance. Turner, by the way, blasts
James in his introduction to Elizabethan Magic and is on that count
just as worth ignoring as Casaubon and what he has to say about Dee in
his introduction.

The existing Enochian dictionaries compiled by Laycock and Vinci
contain numerous errors while those of Regardie and Zalewski fail to
indicate the use of spelling varients specific to the Golden Dawn. The
abomination published by the Schuellers is like everything else they
have written: an inexcusable mishmash of erronious data carelessly
cribbed from the sloppy research done by others over the last hundred
and some odd years, coupled with their own stupidity and a useless
gematric code resulting from their uncredited attempt to modify the
numerations used by Crowley. In other words, nothing available was of
sufficient reliability and completness to serve my own needs as a
researcher, so if the book won't come to Mohammed, Mohammed must (if
he wants to get on with his research) get stuck writing the book.

This book was produced on an Amiga home computer using the
following software: Superbase Professional v3.0 (relational database
management system) and Prowrite v3.2 (word processing package).

Love is the law, love under will.

The basis of this work is a series of database files and queries
occupying aproxametly 2.7 megs of space on our hard drive. The files
contain: 658 words in Enochian, 908 names in Enochian, 21 Enochian
letters, 1708 definitions of Enochian words and names, 1500 numeric
entries, 5 gematric translation tables and fields showing individual
letters from each word and name.

All numeric data was generated through relational queries between
the above files and then exported in a preformated report output to
our word processer for final page layout. This means that gematric
values should be absolutly correct for the words as spelled and any
numeric error that exists is a direct result of a spelling error. All
spellings of Enochian words have been at least triple checked during
and after data entry, but in a project of this size errors could still
conceivably exist - if you find one we would appreciate your
notification so that it can be corrected in later printings.

Volume 1 contains an Enochian-English dictionary, an English-
Enochian dictionary (both including tables of comparative gematrias in
an approximate chronological order of their development) and a
qabalistic dictionary similar in format to Crowley's Sepher Sephiroth
which utilizes the Head-Hulse gematria. Only words found in the Dee
manuscripts or derived by logical extension of Dee methodologies (ie:
the complete listing of cacodemons) are included in the dictionaries.
Golden Dawn and Crowley varient spellings were not included, but may
be published as a later supplement to this work.

Angelic names are derived by the use of Dee's 1587 Raphael
revision of the Elemental Tablets. This, according to Dee, is the
final version of the Tablets. It is called the Raphael revision
because, according to Dee, they were "corrected" by the angel Raphael.
This is a substantial difference from other dictionaries. Most
writers on the topic utilize the Golden Dawn method of including all
letters that ever occupied a square in that square, despite the fact
that Dee never did this, and in fact, crossed out the earlier
attributions. The Golden Dawn seemed to want to have their cake and
eat it, too, for while they wish to include early attributions of
letters, they employ the final version of the relative positions of
the tablets to the directions. More scholarly writers on Dee seem to
prefer the original (1584) version of the Tablets, claiming that the
1587 version is "suspect" (although they never state why, and we can't
think of a reason that three years of experience in research and
scrying these tablets on the parts of Dee and Kelley should be
gratuitously flushed down the drain) and that it also "throws entire
systems out of whack," (which take all of about half an hour to re-
adjust, and we have done so.) We have used the original (and only)
versions of the Holy Table, the Tablets of the Bonorum, and the
Sigillum Aemeth. We have revised the names of the Governors included
in The Book of Earthly Knowledge, Aid and Victory to conform to the
changes in the Elemental Tablets. The 48 Angelic Keys remain
unchanged.

The English-Enochian dictionary requires some explaination.
Words are listed under their actual meanings, but they are also listed
under root words from which they seem to be derived (compound words
are listed under more than one root.) One can also deduce the
existance of root words which were not in the angelic conversations,
but we have not listed these as they are not Dee source material. It
is our hope, however, that others will be inspired to do original
research in Enochian linguistics; much can be deduced about the
thought processes of a people by a study of their language. The as
yet unexplored area of Enochian linguistics may give us much insight
into the natures of the beings inhabiting the Enochian realms.

It is also important to point out that the Enochian language, as
presented to Dee, differentiates between numbers as numerals and
numbers as words. When a numeral is given, it is a substitute for a
letter found in a word. An example can be given by taking the number
"21," which can be found in several names on the Sigillum. This number
is, in this instance, a simple substitution for the letter "e." On the
other hand, there is an actual word with the meaning "six." In the
English-Enochian dictionary, substitutions are listed under "numbers"
in numeric order, words indicating numbers are listed under individual
headings in the body of the dictionary.

Gematrias were selected for inclusion on the basis of our
perceptions of utility for the end user and validity in the context of
the Dee system. Volume 1 contains the Head-Hulse gematria because we
feel it to be of the most general utility. It closely resembles
gematrias of Greek and Hebrew; Dee read Greek and was told by the
angels that Enochian was the source language for Hebrew.
Unfortunately, there is no surviving record of any gematria worked out
by Dee himself. This is rather surprising, as Dee was a fanatic
cryptographer. The sad, but likely, possibility is that this material
ended up as kindling and pie wrappers (along with over a third of the
original Dee diaries, before the remainder came into the possession of
Elias Ashmole.) The remaining four gematrias (Golden Dawn, Crowley 4,
Crowley 31, and Aurum Solis) can be found in volume 2. Hopefully, the
presentation of five complete gematrias side-by-side will allow the
reader to compare and come to hir own conclusion as to the usefulness
and validity of these competing systems.

It is our sincere hope that further research and development into
the Dee system will be stimulated by this work. We would be happy to
hear from any serious correspondant in this area.
