Hi there,

this is the Ultra-Complete Index to the Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy,
third public release as of 28-mar-1993.

Initially, I did not plan to post it to alt.fan.douglas-adams before release
four, but I changed my mind for the reason that I wanted to know if there
/really/ are people out there who care for this stuff. :)

Originally, the index consists of three files (readme, changes, and
hhg_indx.asc) and is, in an archive, distributed over BBSs only. This mail is
just a compilation of these files, the single files are separated by '-----
[name of file]--- ...'. Please, if you want to give the index to people
'outside' the net, try to get hold of the original archive (the Fido BBS
mentioned in the text is offline until 15-sep-1993, but I'm sure that I find
someone who can send the archive to an ftp site).

Please follow the directions in the text (i.e. send me *lots* of comments
:) ) and when you do so, send them to <mathias.maul@wi2.maus.de> only and try
to keep your mails below 48kBytes (I will be charged horribly high fees for
mails larger than 48kB). I do not read this newsgroup as I don't have direct
InterNet access.

Whether or not there will be a net version or a fourth release of the index
depends mainly on your reactions. :)

bing tiddle tiddle bong,

     Mathias.

-----[readme ]-----------------------------------------------------
The Ultra-Complete Index to the Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy
may be distributed freely (for further details see the main file) as
long as the following files are copied:

                name size description

                hhg_indx.asc 30718 the main file
                readme 715 this file
changes 2398 release notes and revision history

I really do not like to mention this subject again but be aware
that if you alter the index in any way, especially if you change the
name of the original author, you violate the copyright laws. Share and
enjoy, but be fair.

     have fun,

          Mathias.

3 Things to come
----------------

Well, there are many, many things to come in the future. In fact I
really have many, many ideas but much too little time. To be blunt, it
will take a while for all these things to come. But it surely will be
worthwhile waiting for all these extraordinarily amazing things that
are likely to come in the future and will surely surprise you at the
very moment when you least expect it. Not only the long awaited fourth
release of the Ultra-Complete Index To The Hitch Hiker's Guide To The
Galaxy (including volume five, "Mostly Harmless" and -maybe- an index
of all the famous quotes) but also -- please strap in, stop
smoking/steaming and hold your llamas tight -- The NEW! Even More
Complete Index To Monty Python's Flying Circus, including all important
keywords, phrases (ever wanted to know where the heck this 'Semprini'
comes from?) and quotes from all series. Be patient (I expect the
MPIndex to be ready in late 1993) and dream of having a handy reference
to the greatest comedy series ever...

4 But remember
--------------

If you have any suggestions on how to make the index[es] more
interesting or if you want to add something or if you do not like
either the Index or me or anything/anybody else within or outside the
known universe please contact me. I do not eat helpless grandmothers
and I will not send megabytes of trash to your account if you
criticise. So: Search out the nearest computer in your vicinity, grab
the keyboard and write NOW.

The Ultra-Complete Index to the Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy
written and entirely copyrighted 1992, 93 by Mathias Maul
=======================================================================
third public release as of 28-mar-1993

Many long years have passed since the publication of Douglas
Adams' masterpiece "The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy" which
undoubtedly initiated a cult. Thousands of people were fascinated by
the bunch of brainless idiots called Zaphod, Ford, Trillian, (Marvin,)
and, above all, Arthur Dent. Thousands of people listened to the radio
play and watched the TV series. Thousands of people read the book five
or more times (like myself). Thousands of people spent long years
waiting for a sequel. Millions of other carbon-based life forms had
never heard of the existence of this hallmark in modern literature and
died of ignorance. Well, there was no REAL sequel (Ok, Dirk Gently.
It's brilliant. But it isn't a sequel to the Guide). There was nothing,
an impenetrable emptiness, a complete void. The only things to keep
being amused were some Monty Python sketches Douglas Adams had taken
part in writing (just think of the Chesterfield Sofa in episode #20 of
the Flying Circus) and of course his ingenious adventure game
"Bureaucracy" (which doesn't have anything to do with the Guide but
really is one of the best computer games ever, believe me).

To cut it short, nothing has happened in the last years concerning
the Guide. But now the dull days are over. The time has come to
retrieve the holy books from the golden casket, print out this index
(preferably with a laser printer) and re-read the Guide for the sixth
time. And again. And again. But it will be different this time.
Supported by this amazing index you will get another feeling when
reading Adams' work, you will be transported into higher dimensions of
emotion when listening to Marvin, you will feel a second (or third,
according to your origin) head grow when reading about Zaphod, you will
simply get happy.

[I know, most of the above facts are outdated because Douglas
Douglas Adams -- may all existing gods throughout the universe bless
him -- finally created the fifth part of the Guide but as I liked the
above paragraphs so much I didn't want to delete them. However, 'Mostly
Harmless' will be included in this index as soon as it is published by
Pan Books at an affordable price. If you happen to have any information
on this feel free to inform me]

But enough of this idle twaddle, let's get into it NOW.

Some notes for the unsophisticated reader:

Firstly, whenever I mention Douglas Adams I speak of John Lloyd,
his partly-co-author, as well, just to prevent any troubles. This also
applies to Steve Meretzky who seems to have helped Douglas Adams with
the Guide as well (apart from creating brilliant adventure games such
as "Leather Godesses of Phobos", "Planetfall", "Stationfall", and,
naturally, "The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy").

Of course, this isn't a 'really proper' index (i.e. that ALL
important words and places are listed) but an attempt to help thousands
of Douglas Adams fans find a vitally important name/place/event buried
somewhere in the deep recesses of Adams' magnificent work (imagine that
you simply HAVE to know where to find the paragraph of the Vl'hurgs and
G'Gugvuntts). On the other hand this index does look professional due
to the sometimes rather obscure form of the entries, for example
"Asgard, deities from halls of". I tried to make the entries
understandable but often didn't manage to do so very well, I'm afraid.
In other words, if you're searching for a specific keyword, try to
rearrange it until you've found it. However, if the index does not
contain the desired keyword, contact me immediately (EMail preferred)
and I will include it if I see any reason in doing so.

As there are many, many names and places in the Guide I only have
included the ones that seemed likely to be of use and omitted the names
which only appeared in insignificant-looking subclauses or quotations
and didn't appear to have any obvious reason to be mentioned at this
very place where they were.

I do not know if this index is of any use to anyone but I often
found myself in the situation of searching the place where for example
Vroomfondel is first mentioned (PLEASE don't ask me why) and would have
been grateful to have something as HANDY!, NEW! and ASTONISHINGLY
USEFUL! as this index. On the other hand, everyone who read "The Lord
of the Rings" by J.R.R. Tolkien will agree with me that it cannot
possibly be read (and understood) without having to consult the indexes
from time to time. However, if you aren't convinced of the amazing
usefulness of this index, read the first paragraphs again.

In general, only the first appearance of the keyword is listed
unless there are two or more important parts dealing with it.

The entries list volume (roman), then page numbers (arabic). A
semicolon separates the volumes. The page number refers to the first
appearance of the keyword itself, not to some vague description. If
there is a paragraph explaining something thoroughly it is marked with
an "x" succeeding the according page number (it would be type-set in
bold face when printed in a book)

Page references are according to the Pan Book edition of 1979-1984
(ISBN 0-330-25864-8, 0-330-26213-0, 0-330-26738-8 and 0-330-28700-1,
all published by Pan Books Ltd., London) as this seems the one most
widely spread. I didn't feel like buying all the other editions as well
to adapt the page numbers, sorry. Furthermore, I did not see the need
of doing an index of the German/French/Italian/Suaheli version as I
expect every real fan to know the original version (Pan edition
preferred) by heart.

This index was made in four days (each day I read one volume) so
don't expect too much. It's as accurate as I think is necessary.
However, this text is supposed to travel around in networks and I'm
hoping to find many, many (or even more) mails from other Adams addicts
with suggestions, amendmends etc etc in my box.

If there are some keywords that -according to your opinion- simply
MUST be included in this index, or if you find mistakes of any kind or
if you know whether there is a meaning in the way you have to arrange
the books in order to get a '42' (I,III,II,IV; ok, 1+3=4 and 4-2=2,
making 42, but this isn't very satisfying) or if you just want to send
me all your money please contact me at once at:

Feel free to write me whenever you want, I like receiving and
answering mail from other people. Write in English or German, I
understand both of them well enough to converse. [Yes -- the English I
use in this text evidently is 'only' the English I learned in school (I
didn't study the language nor am I a native speaker), so if you spot
some real bad mistakes, please contact me]

By the way, a nicely set and printed version (using LaTeX) of this
text can be obtained together with an astonishingly beautiful disk
(please specify format) containing not only this index at the above
address for only DM 21,00 or the equivalent in any other 'major'
currency. Please mail me at one of the above addresses for further
details.

Please put on your peril-sensitive sunglasses now, the index is about
to start...

Please allow me one last word...

This text is dedicated to my former English teacher who died of
cancer in late October 1992. Up to the last minutes of her life she
lived for her pupils and was a reliable friend to many of them. See you
in heaven... :)
