Remember the 4th Amendment? Apparently fewer and fewer lawmakers do.
For your convenience, it appears below:

4th Amendment
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses,
papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures,
shall not be violated; and no warrants shall issue, but upon
probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and
particularly describing the place to be searched and the persons
or things to be seized.

Here we go again. This time, Louis Caldera, a first-term California
Democrat and eager and willing Agent of The Beast is proposing new
police tactics that fly in the face of the 4th Amendment.

Don't let this yahoo get away with even PROPOSING such outrageous
laws (outlined below). Call him at (202) 224-3121 and let him
know you're wise to the fact that he's sold out to The Beast.

According to the morning's San Jose Mercury News:

Assemblyman Louis Caldera, first term Democrat from Los Angeles, has put forth a
bill that would allow authorities to declare certain neighborhoods and counties
"firearms emergency areas", and then to stop and search cars for weapons at
designated checkpoints, WITHOUT WARRANTS.

HIGHLIGHTS:

1) Cities or counties could "declare a firearms emergency area" based on gun
discharges in certain neighborhoods, compared with a city or county average.

2) Car searches would be conducted at a "firearms checkpoint" staffed by
"superviso "supervisory law enforcement personnel", not "street cops".

3) Warning signs would precede the checkpoints in the designated zones.

4) Officers could question drivers and passengers and check them with hand-held
metal detectors.

5) The officers would be able to check trunks and glove compartments and under
seats but not inside them or interior panels.
