Fred -

I also looked at Hafler and Adcom when preamp shopping a few years back. Way
back then I found a Bryston 0.5B that I liked better. However, just a week or
so ago I picked up an Adcom ACE-515 (AC Enhancer). Nice! It filters my dirty
line current much much better than the simple filter/surge protector device
(as found in hardware stores and computer outlets), and has a power on/off
sequencing feature as well.

Subject: Speaker Advice Wanted.
Date: 20 Jul 93 18:45:51 MDT

I've been shopping for speakers for a homstereo system for some time,
and now am becoming a little disheartend. I'm having a hard time finding a
speaker that give the full range sound that I enjoy. Let me explain...
I've shopped long enough that I can hear where speakers are weak,
especially when comparing them to others. I've listened to Po, Infinity,
Definitive, RBH, DCM, Onkyo, Klipsh and maybe a couple others I can't remember.
I want to get into a pair of speakers for around $700-$800 ( so I can afford a
head unit at the same time) I'm building my home entertainment system from the
ground up, so to speak.
I liked Infinity, but the Bass was lacking. I liked Definitive, but
the DCM's had much better imaging. The only answer I've found is to spend wads
of money for four speakers instead of two, or may get Infinity with a sub, but
this breaks my wallet. Any advice? What should I listen to next?I like
realistic reproduction. That is my biggest catch. When listening to two good
speakers who have totally different sounds, how do you tell which one is
closest to the original?
If you have some advice/experience to share, I'd love to hear it.
	Thanks in advance.

I would like to second this opinion of the Lyra Lydian. I have had one

Just about EVERYONE I have talked to or read says the Sound Organization Table
is THE table stand for the Linn LP12. I tried the table but it just didn't
seem to have the bottom end punch now some of the stability I had hoped. I
next put lead-shot in the tubes, and that helped. Then I weighted down the
cross-bars of the table and that helped a little more.

A while back, I got a chance to try the Lead Balloon table stand, with the
tubes filled with Lead Shot. This was the best I had heard yet. Just to be
a bit riduculous, I even added a few cement blocks with a few bags of lead
shot onto the bottom of the stand and get still a little more stability and
better bass power.

Even though this is exactly the opposite of what I have heard for a LOOOONG
time, it seems to have worked wonderfully and am quite happy with it. The
one thing which may make my situtation different is that my floor (similiar
to the original poster's) is quite flexibile. (Also the turntable is in the
same room, and rather close, to the speakers. I believe the arrangment mini-
mualizes the vibration, but it still is not optimal.)

Hope this helps..........John C

Subject: Modification Project, Any Suggestions?
From: evan@top.cis.syr.edu (Evan Cheng)

Enough is enough. An Audiophile can only sit back and be protected
by the full factory warrenty for so long without doing anything. It's
time to boldly move forward and void the warrenty on my Audio
Innovations tube monoblocks.

Several things come into consideration:

1) I've learned about a modified version of these puppies (Thanks, Marc.)
It looks like by switching them into triode mode I can squeeze a little
more performance out of them. They currently put out an impressive 50
class A watts (want to hear them drive the Watt/Puppy?) in ultralinear
mode. The modified version is also claimed to put out 50 watts (in
triode mode). How can this be? Is it possible that original version is
underrated? (They use 4 EL34s per channel. What is the theoretical max
power?) Could it be that by changing the output transformer, one can
squeeze more power out of those EL34s? Could it be that it's 50 watts
class A/B instead?

I don't want to simply convert them into triode amps. I want a little
more flexibility. Is it tough to install a triode/ultralinear mode
switch? A lot of modern tube amps have switches like this. How do they
do it?

2) Parts change. This should be easy, but costly. How are Philip caps?
Perhaps I should replace them with MIT caps. I do not recognize the
brand of the resistors used, but I know they are not Vishay or Holco.
The Black Gate Electrolytics should be as good as anything. (BTW, did
you know that Audio Note has two types of hand made caps? One is the
paper-in-oil ones, they are slightly more expensive MIT caps. Supposely
they have much superior midrange performace than each MIT caps, but not
quite as extended on frequency extremes. The expensive ones are silver
foil caps. They range from several hundred $ each to over 1k a piece!!!
The importer told me that they haven't sold any. They are the best
around, nevertheless. Audio Note also has Tantalum resistors, if I spell
it right, a little more expensive than Vishay. Anybody tried them?) I
suppose that I should replace the input resistors with more exotic ones
to start out with. Any suggestions?

3) Replace tubes. This does NOT void the warrenty therefore is not
preferred. :-) The factory tubes (Precision tubes, anyone know the
origin of these?) are as good as any new tubes. To get any improvement
at all, I will have to move to expensive NOS tubes. Telefunken 12AX7's
and 12AU7's would probably yield the most benefits (around $300 for 4 of
each!) Mullard EL34's would yield some improvement and are probably good
investments consider their longevity. Around $400 for two quads, though.
I guess I should start out with replacing the input tubes first
(12AX7's). My amps might not let me, though. I noticed last night (in
the dark) that one of the EL34's is not shining at bright as the rest. A
sign troubles to come? I hope not. Any comments?

4) Others. Your suggestions here, please.

Thanks.

What you need is a DTI (Digital Transmission Interface) from
Audio Alchemy. It's basically a jitter remover. It brings in the
bitstream, phaselocks it, cleanly reclocks it and sends it on its
way. Stereophile reviewed it very favorably in a recent issue.
HCM Audio [(800)222-3465] has them for $270. You can get literature
directly from AA by calling (800)262-8346.

I have no affiliation with either organization except for being
a satisfied HCM customer. And no, I don't have my DTI yet. But
soon...

Hope this helps,

Hello,
a friend of mine has an Audionics BT2 preamp that he would like to get th
the schematics to, or even a service manual. Nothing broken yet,
but he would like to be able to fix it if it dies.
thanks.

Subject: report on transports under 1K
Date: 22 Jul 1993 21:26:32 GMT

Thanks to eveyone who offered their ideas on transports under 1K. I didnUt
listen to any of you! Being too lazy and impatient to bother with mail
order or to travel far to shop, I went to my usual store, Pro Musica in
Chicago. They offered me a deal on a Theta Data2 , taking my Phillips laser
disk player in trade. The Data 2 was what I wanted all along, and they
(clever salesfolk) gave me the stimulus to spend more than I wanted to.

The EAD T-1000 transport. The one which features stable-platter and
re-clocking. At $1100, it's a unbeatable bargain. (Sonically, it is
better than their more expensive T-7000 transport.)

For a one piece CD player around $1000, see my comments on the Micromega
Leader 2 elsewhere. I used to own a much-tauted Pioneer PD65. Micromega
Leader (at $400 more) is certainly a worthwhile upgrade!
Leader (at $400 more) is certainly a upgrade!`>1. CAL Delta. Transport
only, coax & optical out. $800

I just bought a Rotel 955BX Limited Edition for $580 plus tax. It keeps up
with anything I've heard under $1500. I haven't A/B compared it to much
personelly but some reviews were very positive. Check it out!

2. CAL Icon. Player/transport, coax out. $800

3. JVC 1050ZXC (or some other remarkably similar number with 1050 in
it). Player, coax out. $800

4. Rotel 965. Player, coax out. $600

5. Rotel 955. Player, coax out. $500

Check out the Teac VRDS-10 player which listed for $1400, but can probably
be
purchased for around 1K or Esoteric P700 transport listed for 1K. Both
share
the same transport mechanism, but Teac unit come with Philippe bitstream
DAC. Other transport you might want to check out is the Cal Audio unit.
listed around 1K with Delta Sigma DAC.

I have a Theta Data 2 and a Rotel 855. There is definitely a
difference between them, but if you're strapped for cash, nothing
comes close to the Rotel in price/performance IMHO.

I recommend the Enlightened Audio Design (EAD) T-1000 transport.
It lists for $1100, but can probably be gotten for less through
mail order, or just plain-old 'talking down the dealer'...

I have it and am very happy with it. You may also want to
look at the California Audio Labs Delta Transport; it goes
for $850 - I thought it was also very good, not quite as
detailed as the EAD, but still good. Lastly, I recommend
the Audio Alchemy (forgot the model number). It's about
$800 or so.

As far as aesthetics, the EAD looks the best, by far.
The CAL is OK, the A.A. is somewhat unattractive, IMO.

Subject: DQ10s vs QUADs
Date: Thu, 22 Jul 93 23:40:43 GMT

DQ10s were the first pair of high-end speakers I bought (1977) and
QUADs (ESL-63s, with Crosby mods) were the second pair (1987/used). I
think there is no comparison. As I rebuilt my system, I worked my way
from the source to the speakers, and so the QUADs were the last link in
the chain (which now begins with Linn and goes through Audio Research
electronics). When I popped in the QUADs, the difference was clear.
It was like having a holographic image of the instruments, as opposed
to just the clear sound of the DQ10s. The mid-range was much more
transparent and the timbres of all of the instruments came out better.
I listen mostly to chamber music, and so I don't miss the lack low
bass. But my room is only 19 feet long (and the QUADs sit 3 feet from
the wall) and I don't think a wavelength of many low bass notes could
develop in its entirety inside my room. And good jazz recordings sound
like you're in the club. I never got that sensation from the DQ10s.
So, though I too have a fondness for the DQ10s, I think the QUADs are
a far better speaker.

I have the GFA-535II power amp and am looking to buy one of the
preamps. I tried the 555 preamp and it works incredibly
  well with my power amp.
My experience with the preamp-tuner is not favourable. I found
that the preamp in this guise to sound slight harsh and bright.
The preamp seperate does much better and is amoung the better
preamps I've listened to. I think it complements the power
amp very well and gives much better dynamics and tighter
bass. It is very transparent and soundstages excellently,
maybe even better than the passive preamp I'm using at present.
  (I'm using the Sfernish pot)
