*** Section 2 : Internet
***

Internet, "the mother of all networks", is a collection of different
networks, largely based on dedicated lines and using the TCP/IP
protocol suite. There is no central administration or ownership
of Internet, and no central policy (although parts of Internet
are indeed owned by organizations or individuals, and some parts do
have policies...). For more information, consult the FYI documents,
or one of the other introductory files on Internet that can be
found on many FTP-sites and BBSes.

2.1 Q: What different types of Internet access exist ?

A: There are two basic levels of having "Internet access":

   "shell-account"
o First, you can have an account on a system that is
connected to Internet. You get an e-mail address
on that system, and can use NNTP (news), IRC (chat),
SMTP (mail), FTP (file-transfer) and other services,
depending on what the system administrators of your
     host computer allow you to.

   "IP-access"
o Second, you can obtain your own Internet address,
and configure your computer as an Internet-site.
This allows the greatest flexibility in accessing
     Internet.

The difference between a shell-account and 'real' IP-access
can be illustrated by the way a user 'fetches' a file from a
remote file server on the Internet. A shell-account user
must first use FTP to transfer the file from the remote
file server to his shell-account. Afterwards, he must download
the file to his local computer from the shell-account using
a protocol such as Kermit or Zmodem. A user with IP-access
on the other hand, can FTP the file directly from the remote
file server to his local computer.

There does exist a system ('term'), which, in cooperation with
specially modified client programs, emulates IP-access over a
shell-account. It is however, not exactly 'the real thing',
does not provide the full IP-access functionality and is harder
to install and configure than IP-access. At the moment, term is
   only available for Unix-systems.

Both shell-accounts and IP-access are available over dial-up lines,
   leased lines, ISDN and X.25.

2.2 Q: Where can I get hooked up to Internet ?

A:
Many government, educational and commercial organizations
in Belgium are connected to the Internet (or plan to be).
If you are interested in accessing the Internet, you
might want to check out wether you can't do so trough
   your employer or university.

Otherwise, you can try one of these options:

In every Belgian telephone zone, there is a dial-in either in
the zone itself, or in a neighboring zone. (neighboring does
not necessarily mean adjacent - look in the first pages of the
telephone directory for an accurate table).

2.4 Q: Which servers can I find in Belgium ?
A:
It appears that there is a BELNET working group compiling
a list of the servers on BELNET which was due september '94.
Until then, this list also contains BELNET sites.
I have personally checked the existence of the servers
   included in this list.

Note that although a site may be close to you physically,
it may not be close net-wise. For example, below you can
see the route Internet packets followed some time ago,
when they travelled from linux2.cc.kuleuven.ac.be (located
in Leuven, Belgium) to ibbs.ib.be (located in Brussels).

    1 cisco-cc.kuleuven.ac.be (Leuven, Belgium)
    2 cisco-urc.kuleuven.ac.be (Leuven, Belgium)
    3 cisco-belnet.kuleuven.ac.be (Leuven, Belgium)
    4 leuven.belnet.be (Leuven, Belgium)
    5 brussels.belnet.be (Brussels, Belgium)
    6 BE-s2.dante.bt.net
    7 ES-s1.dante.bt.net
    8 NL-s1-3.eurocore.bt.net
    9 NL-f0.dante.bt.net (The Netherlands)
   10 Amsterdam1.dante.net (Amsterdam, The Netherlands)
   11 icm-dante.icp.net
   12 icm-dc-1-E4/2.icp.net (Washington DC, USA)
   13 (??)
   14 icm-pen-1-H1/0-5M.icp.net
   15 icm-uk-1-H0/0-T3.icp.net
   16 icm-stockholm-2-H0/0-5M.icp.net (Stockholm, Sweden)
   17 (??)
   18 192.83.3.16
   19 193.209.45.39
   20 ibbrgate.ib.be
   21 (??)
   22 (??)
   23 ibbr.ib.be (Brussels, Belgium)

As you can see, the packets are routed from Leuven, Belgium
to Brussels, then to the Netherlands, accros the atlantic
to the USA, back to Scandinavia and from thereon to Brussels,
   Belgium.

Many Belgian ISPs have peering agreements with each other,
mainly over X-router.belnet.be, located at the premises of
the BELNET offices. When choosing an access provider, you
should ask about their peering agreements if you foresee
yourself using a lot of local, Belgian bandwidth.

2.5 Q: Where can I find more documentation regarding Internet in
       Belgium ?

A: There are many such documents, both in print and available
on the Net. However, most of these are beyond the scope
of this FAQ. Please consult RFC1432 and RFC1463 for a selection
(These RFC's can be found on most general purpose FTP sites).

*** Section 3 : UUCP
***

UUCP is a computer network connecting computers over telephone
(modem/ISDN) connections. It is a 'store-and-forward' network
that uses the UUCP (Unix-to-Unix CoPy) protocol, hence its name.
The UUCP network uses Internet-style e-mail and news. In Belgium,
UUCP is primerally used as a way to connect computers off-line to
Internet-sites.

3.1 Q: What different types of UUCP-access exist ?
A:
   o shell/BBS-account
Some BBSes in Belgium are connected to the UUCP-net, and you
can get an account on one of those to use mail and news
on-line on those BBSes. There are also several educational
     institutions that have UUCP access.

   o UUCP-node
Setting up your own UUCP-node involves maintaining a local
message database, so access to the UUCP-network can proceed
off-line. This should be arranged with an uplink that
has agreed to link you to his/her system.

3.2 Q: Where can I get a UUCP connection ?

*** Section 4 : FidoNet
***

FidoNet ('The mother of all amateur networks' ;-)), is a network
connecting computers, mainly over modem/ISDN connections.
The costs of maintaining this network are usually carried by
the many sysops (system operators) of the 'nodes' than make up
FidoNet. In Belgium, most sysops are united in the bnet vzw/asbl,
which also takes care of the cost-sharing of the backbone connections
in Belgium.
FidoNet *does* have a hierarchical structure and *has* a policy, which
is available on all nodes.
FidoNet is not an on-line network, and as such only offers e-mail
('netmail'), newsgroups ('echomail') and file transfer with the
host system (many file distribution networks exist in FidoNet, though).

4.1 Q: What different types of FidoNet access exist ?
A:

   o BBS-account
Several bulletin boards systems in Belgium are connected to
FidoNet. To get an account, it is often sufficient to log in
on the BBS (by modem or ISDN) as a new user and fill in a
questionnaire. After approval of the questionnaire (the sysops
generally like to check on fake usernames and so on), a
user is easily given access to Fidonet areas. Many BBSes offer
access to FidoNet free of charge, but contributions are always
     welcome.

   o Fido-point
In this case, a unique Fido-pointnumber is assigned, and
the user has its own message base. Every once and a while,
the Fido-point software connects to a Fido-node (the uplink),
and exchanges mail packets. This is generally cheaper than
reading the same volume of mail on-line on a BBS, since reading
can occur off-line. A point system is generally recommended
for heavy e-mail and newsgroup usage (as opposed to BBS-access).
To become a point, on must find a node that is willing to be
your uplink. This is generally done by asking the sysop of
a BBS by leaving him a message while logged in on his BBS.

   o Fido-node
       A full-fledged Fido-node also has a local messagebase, but
can also accept incoming connections and attach Fido-points.
Becoming a Fido-node is only recommended for experienced
Fido-points and BBS-operators (and generally amounts to
huge telephone bills, divorces, ... ;-)).

4.2 Q: Where can I find such a FidoNet BBS ?
A:
There are a lot of FidoNet BBSes in Belgium, so you're
likely to find one in your local telephone area, which isn't
true for other types of network access.

   Consult <http://cc1.kuleuven.ac.be/student/bestbbs.html>, for
a more complete overview. Otherwise, you can try one of
these to get started (these support speeds up to
28.8 Kbps and use 8 databits, 1 startbit and 1 stopbit):

In Limbo BBS, 2:291/702 (Kris Carlier)
   +32-2-7681041

Horse Power 1, 2:292/850 (Rene' Gustin)
   +32-3-2350043

4.3 Q: How do I send mail from a Fido-system to someone on Internet
       or UUCP ?
A:
There is a mail-gateway between UUCP and FidoNet in Belgium,
maintained by Ward Dossche. In orde to send e-mail to someone
with an Internet-style e-mail address of the form
'username@site.name', send a Fido netmail to Uucp, 2:292/875.
The first line of the netmail message must be: "To: user@site.name"
(without the quotes and user@site.name replaced by the repicients'
e-mail address. The line following the "To:"-line must be left
blank, after which the body text of the message can follow.

4.4 Q: How do I send mail from an Internet-connected or UUCP-system to
       someone with a FidoNet-address ?
A:
A FidoNet address is of the form Z:NNN/FFF.P@fidonet.org, where
Z is the zone number (Europe is zone 2), NNN is the
   net-number (Belgium has net-numbers 29, 291, 292 and 293), FFF
is the node number and P the point-number. Fido-nodes have
0 as point-number, but this may be omitted. The "@fidonet.org"
postfix is used to differentiate FidoNet from other networks
that use the same FidoNet technology such as VIRNET, MEDNET and
HAMNET. (those other networks often use different zone numbers
   as well).

To send mail to someone with Fido-address Z:NNN/FFF.P@fidonet.org,
   use to following destination address:

   FirstName.LastName@pP.fFFF.nNNN.zZ.fidonet.org

(Where FirstName and LastName are the real first and last name
of the recipient, and P,FFF,NNN,Z correspond to Z:NNN/FFF.P)

   Although FirstName.LastName@pP.fFFF.nNNN.zZ.k12.be would also
work, the maintainer of the Fido<>Uucp gateway asks that you
don't use that form. Please use .fidonet.org instead. k12.be
is reserved for educational purposes and belongs to K12Net.

*** Section 5 : The X.25 network
***

X.25 is a UIT protocol for packet-switched networks. Many national
telecom operators have their X.25 networks, which build up to the
international X.25 network, together with some commercial X.25
networks. The protocol is intended for connecting several terminals
to one big server.

5.1 Q: What different types of X.25 access exist ?
A:

   "direct X.25 connection"
o A first option is a leased line to an X.25 switch from
your computer system. Another one is the use of 'DOV'
