                      FAQ LIST FOR AUS.CULTURE.LESBIGAY

This is the Frequently Asked Questions (and answers) list for the
newsgroup called "aus.culture.lesbigay". This document also contains
the a.c.l. Resources Listing at the end of this FAQ.

The most recent copy of this document should always be available at:

Please refer problems, errors or additional information to
   gblf-request@just.net.au
     _________________________________________________________________

This FAQ is posted more or less monthly or whenever new resources are
added to the resource listing. It is strongly suggested you read this
FAQ before posting mesaages to the newsgroup.

Here follows a list of guidelines for users of aus.culture.lesbigay.
There is no compulsion to comply with these guidelines; the net is
controlled by everybody on it and nobody at all (although some are
trying) at the same time, and nobody is going to sue you for
inappropriate behaviour, unless you breach (somebody's) laws in the
   process.

However, there are guidelines for behaviour which are known to make
life on the net more pleasant for all. It is better to respect them.
The net has been known to rise up and bite those who flout its
   established etiquette.

Comments on and suggestions for inclusion in this FAQ are encouraged.
Thanks to those who have already assisted with additions and
   corrections.

What is aus.culture.lesbigay?

It is a discussion group to cater for people who feel themselves to be
excluded from the "straight" community because of sexuality or gender
orientation issues. This includes, but is not limited to; gay men,
lesbians, bisexual men and women, transgendered people, people in poly
relationships, friends of any of the above, and those who are curious
or unsure... (there, I think that covers everybody ...) :)

If you have problems with any of the above lifestyles, you may prefer
to stop reading now, look for another group and have a nice day
anyway. On the other hand, you just may learn something...

It was proposed as Australian alternative to overseas groups, carrying
more local information, although contributions from elsewhere are
welcome. At the time of its creation, it was considered there would
not be enough traffic for the creation of individual gay, lesbian and
bisexual groups. This situation may change of course, and some may
consider it a good thing to see individual groups appear as the
relevant traffic increases. For now, a common forum seems adequate.

   aus.culture.lesbigay was proposed on aus.general on 23 October 1994.
   aus.culture.lesbigay became active on 28 October 1994.

Who runs aus.culture.lesbigay?

Nobody runs it. This FAQ will be posted regularly by me to assist new
group members, but otherwise my involvement is mostly peripheral.
Suggestions for the FAQ are encouraged by email to
   gblf-request@just.net.au

What discussion is permitted?

Whatever you like, provided the subject matter is relevant to the
groups mentioned above, and given the exceptions in the following
paragraph, "What Discussion is NOT permitted". If you wish to discuss
politics relating to gay/les/bi issues, feel free. If you wish to find
a gay-friendly service provider in your area, ask here. If you want to
rave about Sleaze or Mardi Gras or a movie you have seen, or an issue
currenly in the media, that's fine too. If you know of an upcoming
movie or show (or TV show) which would be of interest to the group,
please share it (hopefully before it goes to air...). If you want to
discuss relationship issues, go for it. It is for discussion of
anything of interest to the groups of people mentioned above.

What discussion is NOT permitted?

I do not see this as a valid forum for discussion of the "correctness"
or otherwise, of any of the previously mentioned lifestyles. We should
not need to justify ourselves to ourselves (see "hostile outsiders"
below). "Get rich quick" schemes, chain letters and commercial
postings are generally not welcome anywhere on Usenet, and are equally
unwelcome here. Usenet is a discussion forum, not a billboard. If you
have a message which fits into these categories, but which you feel is
important to the community, you could send it to me, and if I feel I
can post it without a hostile response, I will do so. It's worth
noting that many of those who have posted "junkmail" to Usenet have
found their Internet access cut off by their system administrators due
to the flooding of their mail system with hostile responses. Is it
   worth the risk?

Beyond the restrictions which will be imposed by the other users'
tolerance, nobody can tell you what you cannot say. You may disagree
openly with someone else. That's fine. It's a discussion group. You
may wish to air an opinion contrary to the norm. That's fine too. Be
prepared for someone else to argue with you. Try not to be personally
   offended if they do.

If an argument develops between two people, and it is not relevant to
the group as a whole, please move it quickly to private email. This
   will largely avoid public embarrassment.

Due to the fact that many schools are now accessing the internet, this
newsgroup could become a valuable resource for those just beginning to
understand their own sexuality. It would be a pity, then, if this were
one of the groups "filtered" from school news feeds due to 'offensive'
or explicit language. Please consider this when posting.

What should I do about flames?

If someone 'flames' you, (ie, expresses a violent and/or offensive
disagreement) walk away, think for a while, and try to respond calmly.
A few rational, well-chosen words can make all but the most expert
flamer look like an idiot. After thinking a while, you may choose not
to respond at all. Sometimes *you* may be wrong.

What about hostile outsiders?

All minority groups appear to be hated by somebody. There will be
people who will see this group as an open invitation to express their
prejudice, Sometimes in very offensive terms. The best response is
none. They will (eventually) get bored and go away. If you must
respond, think about it for a while, and try to respond rationally.
This can be very difficult, but can have the effect of making the
offender look like a public idiot.

But I cannot suggest strongly enough - if a hostile posting like this
appears, do your best to *ignore it* - unless you want the group to be
flooded with hatemail. If you absolutely *must* respond, use email.

Fortunately most "flame-bait" is fairly easily recognisable by its
inherent irrationality, stupidity and/or calculated offensiveness.

(Yes, Virginia; there are experts who do little more with their lives
than roam usenet groups inciting disharmony. These people have
problems and are very unhappy. You cannot help them. Ignore them.)

If a "flamer" goes beyond simply expressing a hostile opinion (once),
and becomes a regular nuisance, the best course of action is to write
a message to "postmaster@flamer's.address", politely explaining the
situation and requesting that action be taken to inform flamer that
his actions are an abuse of Usenet. In some cases, this will result in
the offender being "spoken to". In many cases it will result in the
offender's account being removed altogether, particularly if many
users write to postmaster at the same time. In the unlikely event that
a message to postmaster fails to resolve the problem, then a message
to someone in authority at the flamer's institution or service
   provider may do the trick.

Of course, these measures should be used sparingly if possible. We
should be able to ignore a bit of flak now and then, and from what
I've seen some members of this group can give as good as they get
without even trying hard. (Ouch!) ... ;)

(Please try and keep it moderately clean, eh folks...) :)

How do I "join" the group?

Post something. It's that simple. But please read the rest of this FAQ
   first.

General note on postings.

It is a good idea to "lurk" (read without posting) for a while, until
you get the "feel" of any group. Be sure of your facts. In most
newsgroups there is one or more who will delight in pointing out your
errors. Don't use offensive language. Don't use all-capitals, this is
considered rude. Don't "over-quote" in followups. Be aware that some
newsreader software will reject "signature" files more than four lines
deep. This way up. Open other end. Be good to your mother. ;)

General notes on replying to postings.

When you instruct your Usenet reader program to reply to a posting, in
most cases the message you are responding to will appear in your
reply, prefixed by ">" characters, ie:

> this is the previous message

your response goes here.

As a standard Usenet courtesy, please remember to delete any lines of
the original ">" text not relevant to your reply, particularly where
the original is long. Most readers will have read the original,
anyway, and sending it back wastes bandwidth, news server disk space,
download time and money for those who have to pay in various ways for
   their traffic.

It's also quite frustrating for readers to have to re-read a long post
for the second (or tenth) time just to find "me too" (or something
   similar) at the bottom.

Some newsreader software will refuse to post an article where "quoted"
   text exceeds "new" text.

But by all means please include *relevant* text, so that those who
didn't read the original know what you are talking about. Sometimes
your response may arrive at certain sites *before* the original.

Be aware that most newsreaders allow you the choice of a followup
posting (to the group) or an email response (to the author). Use
   whichever seems most appropriate.

These comments apply in particular to "Junk Mail" type postings of
"Get Rich Quick" schemes and the like. These are best ignored
altogether. Many of them are illegal, most are impractical and those
left probably don't apply in Australia anyhow.

PLEASE, NEVER USE ALL CAPITALS! It's considered to be shouting, and
rude. It's also harder to read...

It's a good idea to consider that your posting just may be reproduced
and distributed in ways you can't imagine. Post accordingly.

*** All the above notes apply to email, as well. ***

Shorthand

In the early days of text-based communications, certain shorthand
conventions became accepted to save time and typing effort. (try
typing "as soon as possible" on a model 28 teletype running at 50
bauds, and you'll get my drift). It's easier to type "ASAP", as long
   as it's commonly understood.

   Abbreviations:

ASAP = As Soon As Possible
FWIW = For What It's Worth
   IMO     = In My Opinion
IMHO = In My Humble Opinion
   BTW     = By The Way
AFAIK = As Far As I Know
YMMV = Your Mileage May Vary (results may be different for you)
ROTFL = Rolling On the Floor Laughing
TIA = Thanks in Advance (after requesting a favour)

And as it's sometimes difficult to know how to interpret a remark on a
computer screen, smileys evolved. Here are listed just a few of the
   most common.

   Smileys:

   :) = Sender is smiling / happy
   :( = Sender is frowning / unhappy
   ;) = Sender is winking / joking
   :| = Sender is grim
   :O = Sender is surprised
=:O = Sender is *very* surprised / shocked

     *
:)= = Arms wide open for a hug
     *

   Other expressions:

   *text* = underlined / emphasised
*grin* = you figure it out
    = and so on...

If you belong in one of the groups mentioned at the top of this FAQ,
this is a meeting place for you. Come back often, and be kind to each
   other.
