                      ~~~WASTE REDUCTION/RECYCLING~~~

1.  Reduce consumption whenever possible.
2.  Use mugs instead of paper cups, rags instead of paper towels, cloth
     instead of paper napkins.
3.  Double-side photo-copies; use reverse sides of paper.
4.  Bring your own shopping bags to the market.
5.  Mend and repair instead of discard and replace.
6.  Buy products in bulk.
7.  Buy products that will last.
8.  Remove excess packaging and leave it at the store; make it their
    problem.
9.  Do not use plastic bags; request paper bags at the store.

                         ~~~ENERGY CONSERVATION~~~

10. When purchasing a home, check for its energy efficiency.
11. Invest in ample insulation.
12. Wear a sweater in cooler temperatures.
13. If there are windows near the thermostat, keep them tightly closed.
14. Avoid air-conditioning as much as possible.
15. Avoid keeping your refrigerator or freezer too cold.
16. Use a clothesline rather than a dryer whenever possible.
17. Use outdoor lighting only when necessary.
18. Use low watt light bulbs.

                         ~~~WATER CONSERVATION~~~

19. Install sink faucet aerators and water-efficient shower heads.
20. Take showers of less than 5 minutes.
21. Consider installing ultra-low-flush toilets.
22. Use greywater from wash for plants and gardens.
23. Collect rainwater and set houseplants outside during rainstorms.
24. Dilligently repair all leaks and drips as soon as they occur.
25. Consult your nursery about plants native to your environment or from
    similar climates that require little or no watering.

                                ~~~FOOD~~~

26. Eat lower on the food chain - vegetables, fruits, grains; decrease
    consumption of meat and animal products.
27. Be creative with leftovers.
28. Buy locally grown food.
29. Don't buy foods out of season.
30. Shop at local farmers markets or cooperatives.
31. Encourage your markets to stock locally grown produce.
32. Grow a garden rather than a lawn, saving water and energy.
33. Plant fruit and nut trees.

                           ~~~TRANSPORTATION~~~

34. Live within walking distance of your job and shopping areas.
35. Arrange or join a car pool for commuting.
36. Use public transportation whenever possible.
37. Bike or walk.
38. Buy the most fuel-efficient car you can.
39. Properly maintain your vehicle.
40. Use radial tires.
41. Plan your trips carefully.  Save fuel by choosing the shortest, least
     congested routes.
42. Avoid city traffic.

                        ~~~TOXINS AND POLLUTANTS~~~

43. Read labels of household products; buy the least toxic products.
44. Avoid aerosols and other products containing chlorofluorocarbons.
45. For insects, use natural pest control products.
46. Be aware of boycotts of environmentally unsafe products.

                     ~~~PRESERVATION OF ENVIRONMENT~~~

47. Don't buy endangered plants, animals, or products made from
    overexploited species (furs, ivory, reptile skin or tortoise shell.)
48. Avoid buying wood from tropical rain forests.
49. Plant and maintain trees.
50. Buy products from companies that don't pollute or damage the
    environment.
