A brief review of THE LAST PLACE ON EARTH-Roland Huntford $9.95 Antheneum,
565 pages previously published in hardback as SCOTT AND AMUNDSEN.
The first time I heard of this book it was described to me by a
businesswoman who said it was a brililant analysis of different styles of
management techniques. The second mention of it was in The Objectivist Forum
(a magazine promoting Ayn Rand's philosophy) where it was descibed as a
comparison between two distinct philosophies which resulted in two distinct
outcomes. I view it as two groups placed (voluntarily) in a survival
situation, with their success or failure being a product of their attitudes.
These attitudes then determined each group's acquisistion of skills and
materials. Their respective skills and materials then determined their plans
and actions. One group lived, the other died as a result of their attitudes.
The book covers the entire lives and all expeditions of both Roald Amundsen
and Robert Scott who lead the first two expeditions to the South Pole.
It is not written specifically for survivalists. What it offers for
survivalists are detailed techniques for cold weather survival and management/
attitude examples for stressful situations. - Ken Seger
