Attorney General Janet Reno asked a special court to name an independent counsel to look into allegations that the housing and urban development secretary lied to the FBI about payments to a former mistress during the confirmation process for his 1992 nomination to the Cabinet. --Federico Pena. The Justice Department's criminal division trying to determine what role, if any, the transportation secretary may have played in the award of a contract by the Los Angeles transit system to a management firm he founded. They are trying to determine if there are any allegations of a federal crime by Pena to investigate. --Ron Brown. Investigators are determining whether the commerce secretary fully disclosed his finances and complied with all tax laws. In a separate case, Brown was cleared last year after a preliminary investigation into allegations he accepted money from a Vietnamese businessman. --Ira Magaziner. The U.S. Attorney's Office in Washington, D.C., has been asked by a federal judge to investigate whether the White House adviser lied under oath about the activities of the health reform task force headed by Hillary Rodham Clinton. RESIGNATIONS --Mike Espy. The agriculture secretary left office at the end of last year amid an investigation into his acceptance of airplane flights and Super Bowl tickets from companies regulated by his department. --Joycelyn Elders. The surgeon general, a target of conservatives for her views on abortion, drug legalization and sex education, was fired last year after saying school children should be taught about masturbation. --Roger Altman. The former deputy treasury secretary resigned in August as a result of controversy over the Whitewater affair, the administration's handling of regulators' inquiries into a failed Arkansas savings and loan with ties to President and Mrs. Clinton. --Jean Hanson. The former treasury general counsel resigned with Altman after testifying at the same congressional hearings on Whitewater. --David Watkins. The former advertising executive and White House administrator hopped a presidential helicopter for a golf outing. He resigned and is repaying the government. --Bernard Nussbaum. The former White House counsel, who worked with Mrs. Clinton years ago on the staff of the House Watergate impeachment committee, resigned last March under pressure over his handling of the Whitewater affair. --Webb Hubbell. The No. 3 official at the Justice Department, who had been a partner of Mrs. Clinton at the Rose Law Firm in Little Rock, Ark., resigned and later pleaded guilty to bilking his former law firm and clients out of $400,000. --Les Aspin.
