PIANO v2.1 - Special Notes

Installation:

    - unzip/copy Piano files somewhere on your disk
    - add PIANO.EXE to your favorite program group using
      Program Manager's File/Add command
    - install 'Piano MIDI Driver' using Control Panel:
      Drivers/Add/Unlisted or updated/Browse/select Piano's
      directory...



Uninstallation:

    Are you sure you want to do that? Oh, well... Delete files
    PIANO.EXE, PIANO.INI (located in your Windows directory) and
    PIANODRV.DRV (located in your Windows\System directory), and
    remove 'Piano MIDI Driver' through Control Panel/Drivers.

    Fixed the reported bugs from version 2.0


  ver. 2.0  --  30-Oct-1993

    A special MIDI driver has been created, that allows Piano to
    fully emulate the real keyboards. From now on you cannot
    only play songs with Piano, but also record them with your
    favorite MIDI software.

    Also new in this version is a secondary keyboard layout that
    might help you playing two hands, and of course, a lot of
    other minor features.

Brief description of Options Menu:

    - Keyboard Layout 1 and
    - Keyboard Layout 2

         The one with checkmark is currently active. If you want
         to know more about key-mapping, there's a picture of
         keyboard in About dialog box.


    - Sensitive Pitch Wheel

         If checked, pitch changes as soon as you move mouse
         pointer into pitch-wheel box, otherwise you have to
         hold down left key to move the pitch wheel.
         Clicking the right mouse button will reset the pitch.


    - Local Echo

         If checked Piano sends MIDI messages to Midi Mapper AND
         to Piano MIDI Driver, otherwise messages are sent only
         to the driver.


    - Auto Focus

         (Available only when Piano MIDI Driver installed)

         This is a funny feature. It is supposed to pop-up Piano
         whenever your MIDI software starts recording from a
         Piano MIDI Driver. In most cases it works, but there
         are some programs that don't notify the Piano Driver
         when they have started recording, so the Driver can't
         pop-up the Piano.
         This function only gives focus to the Piano when
         recording is started; it cannot execute the Piano --
         the Piano must already be running in the background.


    - Patch caching

         (Available only when Local Echo is enabled)

         Enables and disables patch-caching. Sometimes, when
         using Piano in conjunction with other MIDI software, it
         is better to let the other software do the
         patch-caching. Of course, this applies only to the
         systems that support patch-caching.


    - Always on Top

         If checked, Piano stays a top window even if it's not
         active. Might be useful with those programs that don't
         support Auto Focus.



Troubleshooting:

    Piano says something about not being able to open MIDI-MAPPER...

      Piano wants Midi Mapper all by itself and you have another
      program running that has already reserved Midi Mapper
      for its own purposes. Exit that program and Piano should
      work just fine.


    Piano says nothing. It draws itself and then disappears...

      What you have is a mutated Piano. Get yourself a new copy
      of PIANO.EXE.


    Piano starts normally, but there's no sound...

      See if your sound card is in order -- try playing
      CANYON.MID with MEDIA PLAYER (both part of Windows). If
      you can't hear that either, there's something wrong with
      your sound card setup; fix it and try Piano again. If this
      is not the case and CANYON.MID plays just fine, try
      changing a channel. (BTW: Do you have 'Local Echo'
      enabled? If not, enable it and try again)
