"The Atari A to Z" by Mark S Baines Copyright (c) 1998 Mark S Baines All Rights Reserved YOU MUST READ "READ_ME.NOW" BEFORE YOU LOOK AT ANY OF THIS FILE ***************************************************************************** Appendix D Extenders This is a list of some common file name extenders which may help you to analyse mystery files appearing on your disks. It never hurts to show a file to screen to see if it is readable. If it displays rubbish and the computer 'pings' at you then press [Q] to quit. Better still, load it into a text editor. Always make a backup copy before experimenting with data and configuration files. It is not a good idea to change the name of most files, especially configuration and data files and especially the extender part. Programs are usually hard-coded to look for a specific extender and will not necessarily load it up if it has the wrong name. 1WP First Word Plus formatted text 81 ZX81 emulator program file ACC GEM accessory file ACX GEM accessory file, inactive AIM AIM command file, ASCII format ANM Animator data file APP Application, a GEM executable program ARC Compressed file using ARC format compression ARJ Compressed file using ARJ format compression ART Artist or Art Director paint image ASC ASCII text file with a CR and LF at the end of each paragraph ASM Assembler language source code, ASCII format AU AU format sound data AVR AVR format sound data AWK AWK (QAWK) language source code, ASCII format BA HiSoft BASIC language source code, ASCII format BAK Backup data file, various formats BAS ST BASIC language source code, ASCII format BAT Batch file for a command line interpreter, ASCII format BIN Binary file, GST format object code BL1 Degas block data low resolution BL2 Degas block data medium resolution BL3 Degas block data high resolution BMP Windows bitmap image format BRU Degas brush data BSC FaST BASIC language source code, symbolized non-ASCII format C C language source code, ASCII format CAL SuperCalc data CAL Calligrapher document file CAT Catalogue, possible ASCII format depending on application CC C++ language source code, ASCII format CCC C++ language source code, ASCII format CDK Calamus document CFG Configuration details for an application, usually ASCII format CFN Calamus font data CHR Characters, font data CNF Configuration details for an application, usually ASCII format CPD Calamus printer driver CPD Protext printer driver (unprocessed) CPP C++ language source code, ASCII format CPX XCONTROL panel accessory module CPZ XCONTROL panel accessory module, inactive CRG Calamus Raster Graphic monochrome image CSV Comma Separated Values data file, ASCII format CTB Fontkit character table data CVG Calamus vector graphics data CXX C++ language source code, ASCII format DAT Data, usually ASCII format DBF dBase data DCT Dictionary for a word processor, usually not ASCII DEF Definitions, configuration data, ASCII format DGY Dodgy format compressed data DIC Dictionary for a word processor, usually not ASCII DIF Data Interchange Format spreadsheet/database data DIR Directory listing, ASCII format DIT Dither, graphics program data DMP Dump, various formats DO Flash and Freeze-Dried terminal program script files DOC Word processor document file, ASCII with unreadable codes DOO Doodle picture data format DTP Timeworks Publisher document DVI Device independent, TEX output data file DWG JIL CAD drawing data E24 Signum! screen font data ELM Arkey data ENV Environment variables data, usually ASCII format EPS Encapsulated PostScript, ASCII format EXE Executable program section called by a PRG or APP file EXL Protext exclusion dictionary FED FED screen font data FI1 Degas fill pattern data low resolution FI2 Degas fill pattern data medium resolution FI3 Degas fill pattern data high resolution FKY Function key definitions FLX Flexfile data FNT GDOS font data FON Fontkit screen and downloadable printer font FOR Fortran language source code, ASCII format FSM FSMGDOS font cache GEM GEM metafile graphics image data GFA GFA BASIC source code GFX Graphics data, various formats GIF Graphic Interchange Format, bitmap format from CompuServe GLS Protext glossary data GRA Graphics data, various formats GSF GhostScript font data GTP GEM Takes Parameters executable file GVL GEM-View load module GVP GEM-View print module GVR GEM-View process module GVS GEM-View save module H C language header file, usually ASCII format HEX First Word printer driver data, ASCII format HLP Help text file, usually ASCII format HRD WERCS resource file header, object names list HSP HiSoft Pascal language source code, ASCII format HST History data, usually ASCII HST Histogram, graphics program data HYP Protext word hyphenation data HYP ST-Guide hypertext file ICE Compressed file using ICE format compression ICN Icon image data, various formats IDX Index data, various formats IFF Interchange File Format graphic image used on Amiga computers IFX Tele Office incoming FAX image IM AIM graphics data format IMG GEM bitmap graphics image data IMG A bit-copy of a ROM file INC A language include file, ASCII format INF Information data, usually ASCII format INI Initialization, configuration details, usually ASCII format INS Installation, configuration details, usually ASCII format INX Inactive INF file IO Input/Output driver data IO1 Signum! image data format J01 STraight FAX!
