It works great but you have to remember that the higher the resolution and the higher the number of colors so goes your available memory. From personal experience I wouldnt go back to ordinary falcon resolutions if someone paid me. It looks that good on my Sony Multiscan 15sf. However, if you dont have at least a SuperVga monitor I'm not sure how usable it would be due to the limited options you'd have available to you. Part of the reason for that is that the 3D is not supported by Screenblaster, but the 3D only does 800x600 non-interlaced anyway. Another reason I would try Blowup first is that last I heard there is an upgradable software only version of it, and even the hardware version is less expensive than Screenblaster. On the otherhand, my information is over a year old and things may have changed. I've never used the commercial versions of Blowup, only the free 'demo' version which works very well on my 3D, but is limited to 16 color mode since its the demo version. Blowup has 3 versions, 1 software only for 29 DM, multisync hardware version for 99 DM and non-multisync hardware version for 129 DM. Screenblaster has replaced the original version with Screenblaster II, which I have no idea whether it works with non-multisync monitors. As far as I know there is no software only version of Screenblaster. Unlike Blowup's demo, the Screenblaster's demo is not a working demo. At least not the one I saw. Bob, I don't know what the original PC keyboard felt/sounded like so I can't compare to that. As for the audible click, there is one but I believe what you hear is the keycap bottoming out when the key is pressed. I suspect the original PC keyboard had real switches in it, where the ST/Falcon doesn't. They have little rubber doodads, the best way I can describe them they look like miniature version of suction cup looking sink/toilet plungers. Tactile feedback is definitely there, Do you have a TT keyboard you can tap the keys on? The kit feels very much like my TT keyboard, but a little stiffer(ie takes more pressure to push it down) and crisper when it "ovecenters". I put this kit in my old 104STf a long time ago, Finally had a feel I enyoyed using. Yes I like it!! I knew from the beginning that if I ever owned a Falcon, I would put the kit in. I hate the mushy feel. FWIW, best keyboard I've ever used is my STacy4. Bman, Well, if I buy a hawk also, I guess I won't need SB2! I got a mulisync monitor and I'm trying to find a way into fooling the falcon into thinking it's a SC1224 so I can view some of the Falcon demo's in the umich archive. I found a small file describing how to make an adapter cable/switch to the M1 M0 pins of the falcon, but I can't build one because i can't find any DB19 connectors, let alone hoods. I've looked EVERYWHERE, even at places that used to make them on the old commodores. I tried REZ Fool, It did absolutely nothing. CAN SOMEBODY HELP?!?!?!? BTW, if it helps any, it's an Apple MultiScan 17 and I have one of those VGA adapters that somehow DOES have a DB19 connector on it. . It looks great, but I can't run any TC modes in 640 x 400. The Rogue and Peasant Slave Hamlet ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 27 Sat Sep 09, 1995 P.FLETCHER4 [STumped] at 20:43 EDT Hamlet, Unless your Apple Multiscan 17" can sync down to 15.66mhz you might as well forget trying to use it in true color above low res. Toad makes a switch that allows you to use the Falcon with a multiscan (I think) but it only works with older Multisyncs that will scan down to 15mhz. Pete ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 28 Sat Sep 09, 1995 R.RIVES1 [SAX] at 20:55 EDT Wizztronics 516-473-2507 ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 29 Sun Sep 10, 1995 B.SEMAAN [Binary Sound] at 01:25 EDT Hamlet, First, you need to have (or get) the specs on your monitor. Most important are the scanning freq. ranges and the pinout of the monitor's connector. To get the original ST color modes, you have to sync down to 15.75Khz horizontal. I can't remember the vertical rate, but its somewhere in the 60- 70 hz range. You also need to confirm that your monitor can deal with a 1Vp-p signal, (most likely it can, but better safe than sorry) otherwise the signal needs to be attenuated. Once you've confirmed 15.75Khz (Horizontal) capability, there's a textfile in the library that gives very good instructions on making your own cable connector, with or w/o switch to go between ST and VGA modes. It was posted in the latter part of 1993, and though it uses the NEC 3D as an example, the project will work with any compatible monitor as long as you make the proper pinout changes, if any. I built mine based on these instructions for less than $10 in parts and have had no problems with it. Thanks -----Tom ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 33 Mon Sep 11, 1995 P.FLETCHER4 [STumped] at 21:45 EDT I've just read a review in October's ST Format for a new video digitiser called EXPOSE from Titan Designs. In a word, Cool! It not only can capture full color stills, but movies too at 25fps. You must use the Falcon's internal expansion port and modify your case a bit, but the installation looks easy enough. ST Format claim the whole process took them 10 minutes to install. My favorite part of the whole deal is that an accessory is included that allows you to watch the video source while working on whatever else you want too. I assume this works better under a multitasking environment. I guess I'll be watching alot of bad cable TV while computing. BTW, EXPOSE doesn't come with any specific video capture software. The unit is designed to work with APEX so if you already own APEX the unit isnt quite as salty. Speaking of cost it is a bit expensive. It appears that unit will cost abou$350.00 w/o Apex and $450.00 with Apex. I had to change to this from fast serial to make MintNet work when I set up that to use Lynx. I also had to change the STIK config file to connect with strings. (This might just be my intialization string for the modem). With STIK configured to modem 1, it dialled and went through the logon sequence OK but wouldn't accept the IP address from my provider. I fixed this by changing to modem 2. (This could mean that I have HSmodem set up incorrectly - but it works!) Once you connect, do your initial testing of HTML.APP with graphics off before turning them on. It will crash on some graphics, just like Chimera does. I wait for the accessory to count down the last 10 seconds instead of using the escape key. Don't know if this makes a difference or not. If you are logging on with flash, you don't have to worry about editing DIAL.SCR. But you MUST get DEFAULT.CFG correct or you get nothing. Also remember to reboot each time you change DEFAULT.CFG, otherwise the STiK accessory doesn't get reconfigured. Since I can't get my dialer correct, I have to set my IP address from DEFAULT.CFG. Kind of a pain but it works. And I am VERY pleased with this WWW Browser. (Making myself a note to send in my registration.) Iver ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 80 Tue Oct 03, 1995 C.COOK7 [Cliff] at 21:35 EDT Stumped: Here are a few suggestions -no guarantees. 1. Make sure you have HSModem installed and test it using something like Aladdin - Don't use Flash II for the test, it installs it's own routines. 2. Select Modem 2 as your device in the config file. 3. Check the complete dial script with your provider. This is to make sure you have all the FIND/RESP pairs you need and that the spellings are OK. Especially check that you have the right command pair to set your connection to slip. Maybe you can check this from your Flash II capture. 4. Set the ALLOCMEM higher - mine is 260000. - This seems to prevent a lot of the run time error 163's in the browser. I might be able to get rid of them all if I ever find the right size - but I don't even know how to go about looking for it.. 5. Every time you try to run the browser, delete all files from the CACHE folder you set up. Otherwise, the program may use a corrupt file from the CACHE folder. 6. After you configure either STiK or the browser and save the options, reboot. 7. Change the success parameter in your dial.scr to CONNECT and try 19200 bps. - I have no idea why, but it worked for me. 8. Make sure your provider supports normal slip and not just compressed slip. STiK does not yet work with compressed slip. 9. Install SpeedoGDOS for the browser. 10. Try it with graphics turned off for starters. 11. And of course clean up your AUTO folder and Accessories. 12. Pay attention to where you get stalled in the dial process and watch your modem lights. Turn on sound from the modem if you have a speaker. Like any log-on script, this will at least tell you where it stopped working. 13. Make sure your STIK_CFG folder is in the ROOT of your boot drive. 14. Run from the TOS desktop and with the accessory in the root partition. Later on you can try Geneva and Neodesk and ACC folders. But not until you know it works on a plain vanilla system. I don't see how you could ever succeed after using Flash II to connect. STiK is what provides the TCP/IP sockets. This program is far from perfect, but it works on a lot of sites - not all of them (e.g., TOAD crashes the browser every way I've tried to access it). It's really something to see 256 colour graphics off the net for the first time. I hope you find at least some of these ramblings useful. Good luck!! Damn, Pete ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 83 Sat Oct 07, 1995 C.LABELLE [Tintin] at 12:45 EDT About STIK: another thing to check with your provider is the MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit). I had lots of Error 163 before (each 3-5 pages). When I put in the new number for MTU the errors are now rare (except those related to GIFs). Once you know your MTU, edit your DEFAULT.CFG as follows: MTU = MSS = PKT_SIZE = DFB_SIZE = All other numbers stay the same. For example if your MTU is 1506: MTU = 1506 MSS = 536 PKT_SIZE = 1506 DFB_SIZE = 3012 I got this information from the horse's mouth (Steve Adam). Hope this helps a bit. Dom ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 108 Tue Nov 14, 1995 P.FLETCHER4 [STumped] at 19:13 EST This may be out of place but here goes! Its nearing the end of another year and at this time I find myself reflecting on all things Atari and how I continue to exist in the community. In years past, I have always found more positives than negatives but this year more then ever it has been bitter-sweet. On the bitter end of things comes the official demise of Atari's computer division. My ST, STe, and Falcon are now officially orphaned. A lack of an active Atari presence has been a bit dificult on me but it really came as no suprise. I have and will continue to enjoy both the ST and Falcon lines, but their role in my life will no doubtedly begin to change as software becomes less and less available. Also on the negative side has been lack luster Jaguar sales. I personally own two Jaguars and a JagCD but do not know a single soul (short of those of you here on GEnie) that own one. Software has been continually late and the recent layoffs cannot speak well for the Jaguar's future. I can only hope things improve in the fourth quarter for Atari. On a sweeter note, there have been some nice additions to our computing family. The C-LAB Falcons, GE-Soft Eagle, and Atari clones from Computer Direct help keep the "dream" alive a bit longer. Also, Magic Mac and Gemulator have given us a viable way to slowly change platforms while being able to enjoy the programs and operating system we have grown to love. ST Software, even though not in high volume, has been decent in quality. Kobold, Magic 3.0, CAB/STik, updated Flash 2, obsession Pinball, Substation and others have been nice additions. Sadly, however, UDS (the makers of Obssession and Substation) have recently left the ST market due to poor sales. The promised Falcon version of Obsession has also been axed. Falcon only software has seen some nice additions with Apex Media, Rainbow, and two Falcon specific CD Rom games (Ishar3 and Robinson's Req.) Its nice to see some Europeans taking the Falcon's multimedia promise seriously. The Jaguar has also seen its share of nice programs, though not at the volume that I had hoped. Highlander, WMCJ, Rayman, and Power Drive Rally are among my Favourites for 95. Primal Rage is expected this month and I am eager to buy that title. NBA JAM TE also looks like a sure buy if it gets out this year. Now comes the hard part, how to decide in what capacity I wish to remain an Atarian. Do I listen to my heart and stay kicking and screaming the whole way or do I listen to my head that tells me its time to start to move on? I guess I've always had a fairly decent grasp of mixing the two and ultimately that is what I will do. I also have a built in desire to remain different, but I assume most of you understand that because many of you are quite the same. The very idea of going "standard" is upsetting. I have decided that I will stick firmly by my Falcon for at least another six to eight months. At that time I may add a Power Mac to the list of my computers, but will not forget my Atari. I am just realistic, I know that my Atari no longer can do everything as well as the more mainstream boxes. Internet access with all of the trimings is one of my wants that my Falcon at the current time cannot provide. This I hear may be changing, but at the moment I only use CAB/STiK at home and a far superior Netscape at work. There is a huge difference. Being able to use Magic Mac for the Power PC will also be nice. :) Jaguar wise, I have far to great an investment at this time to consider changing video game machines. As I earier stated, I own two Jaguars and a JagCD but also over 30 software titles and two catboxes. (I know I'm nuts, but my computer stuff is even more crazy :) I've decided that I'm with Atari all the way with the Jaguar. I'll probably learn to hate myself again, but such is the life of an Atarian. So I guess what it boils down to is that I'm really not going anywhere. I enjoy the products, I enjoy the way it all works, it fits like an old reliable pair of slippers and most importantly I respect nearly everyone in our little community and have made some nice friends. I hope that I'm in this position to reflect back again next year. Problem is that I sold ST to someone else, now I need a ST-compatible computer with newer, better graphics than 520ST. How is Falcon/030 coming along? (I havent been up with the Atari news since 1992 because I was hired to work on Silicon Graphics Wavefront animation software since then) Im looking for a good working Falcon/030 with at least 4 meg of RAM and maybe 500 meg HD (I never heard of that high since my mind is still in 1992 Atari world). Where or how can I find someone who sells it? How much "ST- compatible" is it? I mean can I play Rick Dangerous, Tower Toppler, and many other European games with it? If you have used good-condition Falcon/030 with LOADS of GAMES on it, I will be happy to buy one from you gentlemen/ladies with GOOD $$$$! (no kidding) is there a place in Chicago area that sells Falcon/030????? Can Falcon be able to accept X-Former (8-bit files on XL/XE) files from 5.25 floppy drive and then ARCHIVE to optical (Pinnacle Micro Apex 4.GB) via SCSI port?? I just get a prompt that says "Sorry...can only run on an Atari 68030 with DSP, Codec and a connection matrix (a Falcon!)". Seems there isn't a DSP in this, or it's not functioning. I also can't get it to recognise a SCSI device. It has an internal 40 meg IDE. I'm using the ICD Pro 655 driver. The manual says set the SCSI device to #0. (I also tried other ID's.) I made sure that the ICDBOOT.SYS was set to not skip any SCSI devices. I ran IDCHECK.PRG which scans for external devices and got nothing except the IDE drive and the Falcon on #7. It pause for a second on each ID number as it scans, but skips over what ever number I have the SCSI device set to. That tells me it knows someting's there. I'm just speculating here... :) If they didn't create a "prototype" TOS starting at 4.0x, it makes sense to have 2.0x rather than 3.0x. 3.0x has specific TT stuff. 2.06 was generic and included 030 support plus IDE support (ST Book). You may have an *extremely* early version of the Falcon (like a Rev 1 or 2 mother board). The early mother boards had circuitry closer to a stripped down MegaSTe than they did a Falcon. It's possible that Atari provided a slightly modified 2.06 TOS version for those first machines. The first Falcons did not have SCC serial ports either - they had MFP ports just like the STs, STEs and TTs. With the SCC port (Rev 3 or 4 mother board) came the first versions of TOS 4.0x. If there is no PLCC socket below the RAM board, Bill is out of luck in terms of upgrading his machine. Tom's Falcon must have been a real early dev unit. I am intrigued by this now! Bill, you may have a real collector's item there! Better hang on to it, might even be a one of a kind! John, I had heard that Atari, when they designed the Falcon, had taken an ST motherboard and fitted it around the 030 CPU and the DSP. This person went on to tell me that this is one of the reasons that the machine is so hard to develop expansion slot boards for. I don't know if this holds any truth. Assuming that the hardware is indeed present. re: TOS 2.07 & problems with the detection of DSP and DMA sound Both would require some amount of "interface" code in TOS, so they probably didn't get around to writing it until TOS 4. In other words, other than opening the case to check for chips, the next step is to try TOS 4.0x - which I see was volunteered by a couple of people. We'll assume 4.0x will fit in the socket. We ran into early problems with Flash II development because of these early Falcons. A guy I was working with had been working on a CyberPaint upgrade and got an early dev Falcon from Atari. He was also a Flash II beta tester and reported early on that F2 worked perfectly on his machine. Well, of course it did because his machine still had an MFP serial port. A month or so later I attended the WAACE show in DC. Some folks had newer Falcons there which had the new SCC port on the mother board. And guess what, F2 *didn't* work there (and neither did a bunch of other telecomm software). Many of us had "words" with Bill Rehbock about that! :-) That's when we found out what was going on. I had the clock mod done by Steve Cohen. Bass boost still intact, but I use an FDI/FA-8 combo (where the bass is rather weak) for output. Signal-noise level could certainly use some improvement. Inputs are still mic level, but when needed, I've got these in-line pads that work rather well. Not the ones Radio Shaft sells. These set me back a piece. Thanks, BK ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 157 Wed Feb 14, 1996 C.KROWCHUK1 [Comp. Direct] at 03:28 EST Hi Brian, There are several areas where C-Lab improved the board. C-Lab now has the "keys" to the factory, ie: they are no longer buying existing stock and rebuilding it rather they are getting runs made by the factory. C-Lab is still a ways off from releasing a new board though, so some of the mods are done in the factory and some in Germany by C-Lab. A new board design would be grossly expensive. The audio is now line level, flat and very very clean. The first time I heard it I was really, and I mean really, impressed. S/N ratio is improved 10 fold at least, I don't have the spec handy, sorry. The clock patch is a new and improved design that fixes some problems due to a non pure clock speed from the DMA to the FPU that the old patches did a half ways good job at. This includes a DSP patch as well, the DSP suffered from the same clock problems and by fixing it all crackle is gone. In addition, any devices connected to the DSP port will benefit from this fix. Less time spent correcting minor timing errors and more time processing! The internal fast SCSI 2 bus allows for recording on an internal drive. Wizztronics is currently trying to assemble a Browser for the ATARI that will work with all services for the internet. We will have a WEB site next month. And do intend to stay in touch with all ATARI users. Our news Letter looks like it wil be done shortly, realistically about a month or so. Anyone registered with us will recieve at least the first issue at no charge. It turned out very costly as well as everything else these days. If you still havent registered and would like to recieve it please leave you personal info:Name Address City State and Zip Telephone # optional to my Email account here on GEnie s.cohen27 We still have plans for a TOS compatible computer. Affordable and supported during the next year. We will release details as they become available. Steve C. Which one would you buy or think I would be happiest with? I'm going to be using it on a C-Lab Falcon w/APEX Media, Chronos 3D, CAF, ImageCopy 4, and eventually DA's Vector, Expose, etc. My plan at the moment is to buy a 17" monitor later, and use this one on a pieced together from other peoples leftovers PC unit dedicated for internet use, (but this may change depending on what happens with TOS/Magic Inet software in the future). I would get a Sony 15" which should be in the same price range but .25 dot pitch. I have a Sony 17" monitor which runs around $800. I love it. - TOM - ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 172 Wed Feb 28, 1996 D.PHILLIPS25 at 21:55 EST Mark, I use an NEC 4D and wouldn't trade it for anything. You can still get th them for around $450 refurb, I've had mine for about 3 years. Goes all the way to 1280X1024. Anyhow, more in the neighborhood of answering your real question: on a 15" monitor, don't pay extra for 1280X1024, it's worthless. I even argue that 1024X768 is worthless on anything less than a 15" diag. viewing area (like the 4D). Most 15-inchers have a 13.3 to 13.5 diag. viewing area. Major crunch, your icons shrink to nothing at 1024. If you are definitely going to buy a 17" monitor in the future, buy the cheapest 15" with good definition, something that won't make your eyes tired. You really have to go out and see the monitors to make a decision. If you can get a good picture at 800X600 max new or used for $200 to $250, you'll save some money for the 17-incher and still have a perfectly adequate monitor for a basic PC. Wow, do I babble on! Steve, I love your dedication... but you're out of your mind! Let us know how much for the web, etc. software, my checkbook awaits! You're not _really_ going to _mail_ the newsletter, are you? Can't you send it over the 'net? I hate to see you spend any more than you have to! (That way you've got more for development! :^)) Dan ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 173 Wed Feb 28, 1996 P.FLETCHER4 [STumped] at 22:33 EST I agree with Tom. I have the Sony Multiscan 15sf. Nice color, flat screen etc.. and if you ever get a Mac, it comes with a adapter for the Macs video port. SAX ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 175 Thu Feb 29, 1996 REALM [Joey] at 01:26 EST Mark, I'd buy a 17" or a 14", the 15" models really don't provide much more in the viewable area range. Some of the 15" models are only 3/8" larger then their 14" Counter parts yet they'll be $100-$150 more. A good 14" will have about a 13.25" viewable area. I've seen some fall as low as 12.9" though so they're not all created equal. The 15" usually runs between 13.5" to 13.9". This is just my opinion as well but your wasting money. If you plan on buying a 17" monitor the cheapest route is to buy a 17" now. Put your $300 toward it instead of 15". A decent 17" might last you the next 10 years and should support anything you buy to plug into it. ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 176 Thu Feb 29, 1996 B.AEIN [Bman] at 01:51 EST Tom, Hate to get technical, but the sony is not really .25 dot pitch, they are not using Invar Mask, but it translates to .28 dot pitch in real world terms. I have a Samsung 17gls, a super monitor, sharp as a tac!!! I returned 6 Mag 15 in monitors cause none were sharp or could hold sync. I paid $710 for the gls and highly recomend it. It has a 135mhz bandwidth, so even with Screen Blaster 2, I still can max this monitor out :') Bman ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 177 Thu Feb 29, 1996 M.SIMPSON19 [Mark S.] at 02:24 EST Well, I guess I can at least consider the poss. of a 17" monitor. The sony SE is way out of my price range though. It's well over a thou from waht I can find. I saw an ad for an "Impression" (is this a MAG?). Impression 7 SVGA 17" .26 dot pitch non interlaced-575.00. Is that a respectable monitor? Or a MAG DX- 17F 17" .26 dp NI MPR II green for 635.00. What to do, what to do? I still have to buy CAF and a big HD yet. Not to mention Chris's mentioning of a soon to be released 8 channel A/D converter. Sigh....This is getting expensive. MS ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 178 Thu Feb 29, 1996 R.BENNETT7 [Rodney] at 03:26 EST Tom, I looked at the Sony's and Nec's XV+ monitors. I haven't decided yet, cause I can't see a big difference just looking at it. The customer service rep didn't have any brochures out that gave resolutions, scan rates etc to either of them. But I did notice that the Sony states MultiScan, and Nec states Multisync... what's the difference? Rodney ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 179 Thu Feb 29, 1996 AEO.1 [Albert Dayes] at 08:00 EST Bman, what are the specs for the Samsung 17gls monitor? ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 180 Thu Feb 29, 1996 M.SIMPSON19 [Mark S.] at 09:40 EST >Bman, what are the specs for the Samsung 17gls monitor? That one isn't cheap either. Here's a little from an ad. Samsung 17GLi .28 690.00 Samsung 17GLSi .26 1600 850.00 What do you guys think of ViewSonics? MS ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 181 Thu Feb 29, 1996 D.PHILLIPS25 at 11:14 EST Rodney, MultiSync is a registered trademark of NEC, so everyone else just gets as close as they can, for example, Panasonic uses Panasync. The Sony will blow away an NEG XV series any day. You have to move up to the XP or XE series (not sure which is the highest end) before you get really good quality. Mark, If I remember right, the Impression gets good marks, and it has a tube from a major manufacturer. But again, you really have to see and compare, I would never buy a monitor sight unseen. All, I'm surprised I'm the only NEC fan here. Do you guys know something I don't? Wow, this RT hasn't seen this much action in quite a while! Bman ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 183 Fri Mar 01, 1996 REALM [Joey] at 02:20 EST Mark, We've got two 20" Viewsonics at work and they've been running in 1280x1024 for about 2 years now without a problem. Have a really good picture too. If you look hard enough you may be able to find that 17" MAG for $599. We've got one of those at work and it's a really nice monitor. It's probably not as good as the $875 model but then I only had $600 spend.:) Personally, I think most the monitors available today are pretty decent. There's just different degree's of decent. I've used SONY's, NEC's, MAG's, Toshiba's and Viewsonic's and you can't really go wrong with any of them. They're all pretty nice. ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 184 Fri Mar 01, 1996 C.KROWCHUK1 [Comp. Direct] at 03:13 EST Mark S., Stick to a name brand! They are always worth the 50.00 or 75.00 more IMHO. Viewsonic is an excellent choice, Sony, NEC, Mag, Samsung, Hitachi, Panasonic, Mitsubishi. For a mid priced monitor, check out Princeton Graphics, AOC and WYSEvision. ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 185 Fri Mar 01, 1996 AEO.1 [Albert Dayes] at 07:34 EST Bman, Thanks for the information on the Samsung monitor. -- Albert @ AEO ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 186 Sat Mar 02, 1996 REALM [Joey] at 00:38 EST I've got a Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 17 and it doesn't like the Falcon for some reason. My Falcon works fine on other monitors and my monitor works fine on other computers but they don't like each other. I wouldn't recommend getting one to use with the Falcon. ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 187 Sun Mar 03, 1996 D.ALVEAR [Dom Alvear] at 03:33 EST I bought a Falcon a couple of months ago, but really haven't had a chance to use it. I am still plugging away on my 520ST (TOS 1.04, 4MB's, AdSpeed). Anyway, I plan on using my Falcon for Audio and Video. I have seen different ads referring to "Authorized" or "Recommended" modifications to the Falcon with respect to design flaws and audio quality, etc. It is my understanding that most Atari Falcon's can also be brought up to C-Lab specs. I guess what I am asking is this: What modifications to my Falcon motherboard are available, which of these are included in bringing my Falcon to C-Lab specs, and why would I want any of them done to my Falcon? I also want to upgrade the IDE drive in my Falcon. Any recommendations or warnings as to what to get? Size limits, quirky setup problems, etc. Thanks! Dom ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 188 Sun Mar 03, 1996 M.SIMPSON19 [Mark S.] at 09:52 EST Dom, I have a friend who had the neccessary mods done so that he could use his falcon w/CAF. I can't remember them all, but one of the mods was an internal adjustment the input level as it seems that the stock falcon records kinda hot and digital distortion isn't pretty sounding at all. Another mod was to remove the bass boost, (kinda like a loudness control on your car stereo), as this is undesireable in any serious digital recording. There was a couple of other fixes, but I can't remember what they were. Also, I think later falcons were better off than earlier ones as far as what needed to be done. ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 189 Sun Mar 03, 1996 R.RIVES1 [SAX] at 18:36 EST The main fix is the clock one. The last Falcons from Atari had this mod done. At least mine did. Very early Falcons had some problems with the DSP (ie not all the DSP calls were executed). Also make sure you have TOS 4.04. SAX ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 190 Mon Mar 04, 1996 D.ALVEAR [Dom Alvear] at 09:24 EST Thanks for all the advice. Is there a Falcon 030 FAQ? Dom ------------
