In file #33256, TRACTEC4.ARC, this little tidbit about Missouri was shared: Message 133 Wed Jun 01, 1994 K.GERDES [TraceTech] at 18:43 CDT Rodney, >question regarding an update to DCSHOWIT v1.1 to work in all Falcon 80 >column rez's... have you thought of doing that? Yes and no. Yes I have thought about it. :) No, it won't be an update/upgrade to DCSHOWIT....or to DCShower per se. [As an aside- FWIW Shower was the upgrade to ShowIt, which for some reason didn't seem to be taken advantage of by too many ShowIt users...] The TraceTech package is called 'Missouri'. The 4 main modules are: ShowText, ShowPics, ShowHex and Show_Me. It emulates most of DCShower's capabilities- ie. access via UIS3, desktop viewing, viewing within programs, etc. Missouri is compatible with all versions of TOS -- even TOS2 and up. This includes the Falcon naturally. ;) For more details, you can scan this topic for messages in the last week of 1/94 and the first week of 2/94. There are more details about Missouri in the above mentioned msgs now found in file #32310, TRACTEC3.ARC. It's a lightning fast text viewer that runs in its own GEM window, displays standard text perfectly, formats 1stWord and WordWriter texts with all their attributes (boldface, underlining, all that stuff), shows IMG files in any resolution, displays the contents of RSC files, plays sound files, allows any size system font for viewing, prints straight through or via GDOS, lets you save a document to the clipboard, and can open multiple, mixed files at the same time when you select a bunch of them on the desktop at once and double-click. I've had 250+ 1stView windows open at one time on the TT under Geneva. You just install it on the desktop as the viewer, or in NeoDesk 3.x or 4.0. On different partitions I will boot in different rez with different desktops. This is quite nice. What I need help with is why a desktop in some particular partition will lose track of where things are. For instance, I set up partition "F" to be a 256 graphics mode, no frills set up for playing games like Transartica. The desktop only shows a few icons, one of them to start the game. I save the desktop and next time I boot there is my game icon sitting out on the desktop, as it should be because that is how I saved it. BUT when I go to double click on the icon the path is lost. Or if you open a window, again doesn't matter where, after you boot, it fill find the program. Go figure. For that matter, desktop icon programs sometimes fail on a normal boot. So yes, it will work on the falcon in 16 bit. I thought the Falcon was 15 bit? The animation is better than page flipping in a sense. it works as a keyframe animator. So if you have a Logo at frame 1 and then you reduce the logo to a smaller size and move it to the top of the screen for instance, Das Vektor will fill in all the motion in between. And being Vektor graphics, there is no distortion as when you resize a bit map image. However, the whole process of recording the animation is long, as a lot of math is involved. To my dismay, I can even hear it when I plug headphones into the output, and leave the input open (or pluged with a mic). I know it isn't going to sound as good as my DAT, but even with a SN ratio of 85db, at even moderately high volumes, there shouldn't be and noise. A ground loop is formed when two or more grounded pieces of equipment are connected together using unbalanced cables (the kind used by the Falcon and most semi-pro audio equipment). It causes hum, buzzes, and other garbage to turn up in your audio. The way to troubleshoot a ground loop is to disconnect everything from your Falcon, except the monitor, I suppose; and see if the hum goes away. If it does, then you start reconnecting the rest of your system, one piece at a time, until the hum re-appears. When it does, you've identified a ground loop. ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 78 Fri Sep 02, 1994 B.AEIN [B Man] at 20:11 EDT Did anyone see the 'Cuda at the Cn Show this past weekend? Or how about power strips w/ noise elimination circuits??? ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 82 Sat Sep 03, 1994 B.WILLIS3 [Bill] at 09:34 EDT Steve, I believe that the Radio Shack ground loop isolators are just 1:1 ratio transformers which electrically isolate the input from the output. A good transformer will not cause an audible degradation of sound quality. I don't know anything about the quality of the RS units -- I do know that pro-quality transformers cost upwards of $30 each. If the RS jobs are cheap enough, you might try one and see if you're satisfied with the audio performance. The alternative method is to lift the ground on one unit, using one of those three-prong adaptors. However, this violates all kinds of safety guidelines and I would never suggest that someone do something so hazardous. (I do it all the time, though, and it does work. The unit is still grounded, it's just grounded through the audio cable shield rather than the AC outlet.) Power strips with noise elimination circuits may reduce the amount of higher- frequency garbage that shows up on a ground loop, but they won't help with the 60Hz hum component. They're not a bad idea, though, in any case. ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 83 Sat Sep 03, 1994 K.OLSON10 [KenO.] at 16:03 EDT Hi! Al ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 94 Sun Sep 04, 1994 B.WILLIS3 [Bill] at 11:14 EDT Steve, It may help to have all your equipment plugged into the same power strip. Assuming, of course, that the strip and its associated outlet are rated to handle the load (this newfangled equipment uses so little current, it's amazing how much you can run on a 15amp circuit). The suggestion about using a pair of "baluns" -- 75/300 ohm transformers -- to isolate the cable tv line is a good idea. The shield of your 75ohm cable tv line is a ground path, but I wouldn't risk grounding my whole system through it. It's much better to isolate the cable tv ground, and use the electrical outlet ground instead. One of the best buys I ever made was one of those little five dollar outlet testers from Radio Shack. You plug it into any outlet, and it tells you if the polarity is correct, and if the ground is connected. ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 95 Sun Sep 04, 1994 S.DEITZ [Steve] at 19:45 EDT Rodney, Gurk. While I can't speak for all, I'm sure there are a lot of Atarians like me out in the boonies, who would love to be able to walk into a shop, but for geographic reasons, cannot. We thrive on those magazine listings, and while you're right, the mags can't list everything, over the course of a year, they should be able to push stuff like ICD Pro once or twice? Just my feelings, and I sure didn't mean to down the software or dealers in any way, shape or form. Here's a strange Falcon problem I've been having. I boot my computer, load STalker and find out that my function key assignments don't completely work. I hit F1 to put my name on the screen, and watch the first two letters go on. I hit return and the next two appear, and so on and so on. If I try to call a bbs, things get locked up and I always have to hang up. I found, that if I rebooted my computer, things were *always* okay the second time around. I tried using STalker's reset rs232 port command. I thought at first, it worked, but it seems only randomly. I also tried letting the memory test run it's complete course, and that seemed to work, but still, only randomly. Just to throw a real twist into things, I'm using Geneva. When I reboot Geneva doesn't recognize the mouse click to Open a file. I have to hit ^O to do it. Everything else works fine. When I first turned the computer on, Geneva worked fine. It's really weird, hunh? I'm using fpatch2.prg in the autofolder. It's like the rs232 port is getting strange data at first, but resetting it flushes it. I don't have this problem on my megaste. But where does the audio come from? The mike? A sound file? All I get are the band equalizers. I can change their settings just like an equalizer on a stereo. Brainstorm has released their JPEG decoder with a desk accessory viewer program, but it may not be allowed here for some reason (I uploaded it once, but it was never released for downloading with no explanation as to why) -- it IS on Delphi, Compuserve, and other places, though. The only thing I can think of is that Atari commissioned Brainstorm to write the decoder (as well as an MPEG one, that HASN'T been released due to the $50,000 licensing fee on it!) and objected to it being here, but I don't know. W.MULLIKIN - Yes, AFM requires some sort of audio input. However, AFM settings CAN be left 'resident' (and active) in the DSP, so that other audio programs (that don't reset the DSP or anything) will be 'effected' by however AFM was set -- though I've had limited success with THAT option. I have *never* had any problems, save the one reported where the fix is to reboot the Falcon. As long as I have not access any other communications program since boot-up, Aladdin/LoadAladdin works like a charm. However, if I have used Flash 2, *then* go into LoadAladdin, it loads ok, but when trying to access the modem (with the "Autopass 1" function or any other way) the terminal behaves as if it is not sending any linefeeds. Then, after putting the ATDP683-xxxx command, it doesn't access the modem and just sits there. It allows the key to bring back the drop down menus, and Aladdin still functions fully, except for accessing the modem. The cure is either a warm- or cold-boot. After closing the 'Reply' window, no XBIOS, BIOS or Line-A calls are made. I'm not sure about TOS4TRAP and TOS4FIX though. (Keith?) I'm running full time in 16 color, 640 x480 on a multisync and am having no problems. What modem are you using, at what speed, and what speed do you have LoadAlad set for? (Does one question mark cover that all?) Would it speed up operations on my CDII? TinTin, I think Magix takes up memory. Would be hard to run if it didn't. :-) David, RTS/CTS is a method of signaling from one computer to the other. A Control-S is sent out when one side want the other to stop sending, and a Control-Q is sent out when that computer wants the transmission to resume. You can do the same thing, at your keyboard, with those keys. Modems send out these RTS/CTS (request to send, clear to send) signals all the time, and we don't pay any attention to it ordinarily. But at higher speeds, the time lag between the request and the action is too long, so a different method is used. It's called hardware handshaking, and it uses signals that act right away. This is as simple as I can make it. :-) Al ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 208 Sat Oct 08, 1994 S.WINICK at 17:53 EDT KenO: >> Is there a way via software to turn off the internal speaker >> and still leave the sound out connections active.
