Cogswell College is doing some production work right now with a pair of Falcons at this time; I'll touch base with James Grunke and see if he can give us a report on how they're doing in a professional environment. -Bill ============= Falcon030 Bundled Software Bulletin =============== Falcon030's with Hard Drives are currently shipping with the following software: o MultiTOS o SpeedoGDOS o Landmines o Breakout o Calappt (Personal Time Manager, Telephone Book/Dialer) o ProCalc o Talking Clock They are supposed to have (many didn't because everyone was eager to get machines shipped to dealers quickly) a mail-in card that you mail to Atari to receive: o Atari Works (Personal Integrated Productivity Package) o System Audio Manager (Accompany System Keyclicks and Events with Digitized Sounds.) o Audio Fun Machine (8-band graphic equalizer and special effects processor.) o FalconD2D (Direct-to-Disk recording system with special effects and editing.) IMPORTANT: We know exactly which dealers received machines without the mail-in cards and they are being sent their cards this week. Users that purchased machines and did not receive these cards can contact the dealer in about one week to get their card. All you have to do is fill out the card (make sure you include your dealer's name and machine's serial number); keep the verification half, and mail the other half to Atari. Machines without Hard Drives will not be shipped with SpeedoGDOS, Atari Works, or FalconD2D. They will have everything else (including the hard disk utilities in case you have your own SCSI Hard Disk). The Atari Hard Disk upgrade kits will ship with Atari Works, SpeedoGDOS, FalconD2D, as well as MultiTOS, etc. on the Hard Disk. -Bill Rehbock, Atari Corp. ======================================================================= ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 2 Thu Apr 07, 1994 K.VANDELLEN [Ken Van] at 22:52 EDT I tried to use the SCSI Pro software as Tom had recommended (run the boot program and then the utility program), but it locked up when I tried to set the boot in the utility program. Fast Serial fixes flow control on the SCC port and also incorporates Fpatch2 into it so you don't have to have an additional auto prg. Just replace Fpatch2 with Fast Serial96 (earlier versions don't have this feature). There's also a CPX for configuring flow control, etc. Docs are in German, but basic usage is pretty straightforward. By the way, does anyone know (I think Scott hangs around this topic, don't you?) how SAM saves .WAV files? I've noticed that a few sound utilities won't recognise .WAV files saved by SAM (claiming there's too many tracks!) -- since .WAV files can have up to 4 (maybe more, but I forget exactly) channels in a sample, I was thinking that maybe SAM doesn't save the files as 1 or 2 channel .WAVs, but maybe as 4-channel .WAVs??? By the way, normally I don't plug the 'Euro-demos' but Falcon users should check out Lazer's AUTOWASCHEN VERBOTEN demo -- 768x480 16-bit True Color (i.e. 640x400 w/ interlace and overscan) graphics w/ some impressive texture- mapping/polygon shading, plus other graphics and stereo audio for about 10 minutes! Just make sure you load the program in an ST compatibility mode (ST High is probably the best), and whatever you do, don't play with any of the "Play" functions. ;-) Once loaded, just click "Load"; select the sample in the fileselector. Then click "Save" and change the file's extension to .WAV; click "Okay" to save the sample. During loading, Sound Lab may complain that you've given it a stereo sample. Make sure you convert it to mono (you'll be given that option on the spot). An update to Sound Lab to at least prevent it from locking up on the Falcon may soon be forthcoming. A complete update would be hot on its heels. Some people use the terms "multiscan" and "multisync" interchangeably, but they shouldn't. MOST VGA monitors are multisync monitors, usually handling a range of at least 50-80Hz, but sometimes up to 40-90Hz or more. MultiSCAN monitors are what people are REALLY looking for -- especially ST users who want to use color _and_ mono modes, or Falcon030 owners who want to run ST- RGB/TV _and_ SVGA modes on _one_ monitor. Looks like I should have stuck with the distribution method I used for LoadAlad. Yes, TOS4Trap does "fix" certain features in programs, but that doesn't mean you should take it for granted- aka a freebie. The majority of programs it helps may never be updated for TOS4. And if they are, you'd still have to pay for an update/upgrade, right? Maybe I asked too little... :) [soapbox mode off] OBTW, look for TOS4Trap v2 in the near future. Al ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 161 Mon May 16, 1994 J.KRACHT [Pixel Engine] at 00:32 MDT Keith Gerdes: I'd like to think I was the guy who discovered that memory leak, but the memory leak itself has caused me so much anguish and chaos that I'd just like to forget it completely. Since I first mentioned it, way back when, the misery on my end has been untold. My main use of the Falcon is graphics, and I use True Paint a lot, as there is nothing around (in a general art proggie sense) that does all the nice little things True Paint does. True Paint, however, dies from the memory leak -- every single session. When I think of all the times I failed to save things out of sheer laziness... well, it really hurts. I love my Falcon, and I have developed weird computing habits that "avoid" becoming a victim of the memory leak. In other words, I was convinced the memory leak was personal problem more than anything else. No one seemed to care. No one had been as victimized by it as I was. I was convinced I would have to go on, living with it, like a missing limb, or a terminal illness. Now, your mention of a "cure" has me on the edge of my seat. What exactly was the problem? Dare I ask? A little myth structure has evolved around the memory leak in my immediate computing circle. It has been in use as a metaphor for "the thing that really sucks and which nothing can be done about." A refrain among my friends, upon greeting me, has been "So what's up with the Kracht Memory Leak?" It was one of those things. I had sobbed and moaned so much to them that it had become part of our little group mythos. And they don't even own Atari computers. Please, please... say it again for me -- tell me you have a cure. I still can hardly believe it... A little background: I bought a Mitsubishi 1381 monitor for use on my 520STm a few years ago. The monitor was a little overkill for my needs at the time [800x600], but the frequency response [f(H)=15.6-36 KHz, f(V)=45-90 Hz] was the key since I could use it in all rezes with a switchbox cable I built. Eventually I was able to take advantage of the extra graphic resolution on a PC, on the ST with an overscan mod and a Falcon. Already having this monitor was a factor in my decision to get a Falcon. Turns out adapting it for all rezes was much easier and cheaper for the F030 than the ST. I bought 2 connectors (VGA DB-15 & DB-25), an "adapter" shell (DB-9 to DB- 25) and a small switch- less than $5 total. Using a trick I read about, I ground down the excess pins of the DB-25 to make a DB-19. I wired the two connectors together, added the VGA/ST-RGB switch and then mounted the switch inside the shell. The adapter is basically the same size as the adapters which come with the Falcon. - Keith PS- I always feel left out when people only mention NECs. :) ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 165 Mon May 16, 1994 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 22:31 EDT Ken Van, Loadalad works perfectly on my TT, letting me use the "real" modem port. :-) Al ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 166 Tue May 17, 1994 K.GERDES [TraceTech] at 19:02 CDT Not to overlook my fine supporters -- I want to thank everyone who has registered TOS4Trap & Load Aladdin, and of course the purchasers of TraceTech's commercial products. Maybe if it wrote "REGISTER" >across the screen and then locked up the system, people would take the >hint. (And of course that was a JOKE :-) Too bad your JOKE _should have_ been implemented... :) Seriously, I'd have more incentive to pursue the F030TKIT quicker, knowing about the potential return. [as discussed before Load Aladdin's release] I have 4 choices for "Shareware" distribution: 1) Time limit - works for X minutes, days, etc 2) Demo/crippled - upon registering, you get the full program 3) Direct request - more personal 4) No gimmicks I chose #4 for TOS4TRAP. To be honest, I'll think twice before making that mistake again in the future. Being a little experienced with commercial and shareware, I was hoping a program for the (IMHO) semi-neglected "Falcon" market would be well-received and rewarded. At least it was well-received... :) Don't get me wrong, this isn't a direct reflection of the "Falcon user" market, but rather the market in general; and not just on this platform....IMO too many users, including myself, neglect their obligations. In other words, my development plans regarding the F030 haven't changed- just shuffled in the priority list. You won't catch me on the "developer sidelines" being a benchwarmer! >Geez, does any Falcon owner *not* boot up with TOS4TRAP? Silly. I'd suspect that the vast majority of Falcon owners copied TOS4Trap to the AUTO folder and have since forgotten about it. Stuart Lyster ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 181 Thu May 19, 1994 STEVE-J [EeEckyThump!] at 04:32 EDT R.BENNETT7 - There's only some minor changes between TOS 4.02 and TOS 4.04 (I don't recall what fixes were there). I've been hearing some rumors that TOS 5.00 will be released this Fall, but there's no confirmation on that. ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 182 Thu May 19, 1994 K.VANDELLEN [Ken Van] at 07:32 EDT Keith, I get those messages from time to time, I think when I exit a program and try to run another. I thought _that_ was the memory leak in action. Maybe it's a program grabbing memory and not releasing it when it I exit the program. I'll have to take notes. I think it may be related to programs that open and close windows. While the case is opened up, its also easy enough to pop in a 68882 FPU at the same time. ;-) Sheldon (Computer STudio - Asheville, NC) ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 185 Thu May 19, 1994 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] at 20:59 EDT Rodney, Look into Squish II also. Users who have medium-speed hard drives (i.e., Falcon internal drives) will often find their programs and desk accessories load faster when they use Squish II, not to mention the savings in disk space. I've never read what was changed/fixed in the TOS4 versions- 4.01, 4.02 and 4.04. The only extensive list I ever read was for TOS 1.04 -- dated August, 17, 1988. Now that was an upgrade! Too bad it took 3 years to come out, and not much progress since then... :) >I've also heard of a third party hardware developer designing a complete >rewrite or upgrade to TOS on ROM but with 1 Meg EPROMS? It was the first release of TOS4TRAP v1. I wanted to get some basic testing done and help a couple of you out after reading about a "TOS4" problem online. The public release has some more features: file #32491. >Just curious, have you ever gotten a 'thankyou' from GEnie? Nope, not from GEnie or anyone else associated with "Aladdin", but then I don't expect or need one since Load Aladdin is supposed to be a "for profit" venture. Users' reactions are what counts in my mind. I'll interject and say that the ST-RT Sysops have always given me excellent support, I couldn't ask for anything more! I thank them for the opportunities they've given me. >How about from Atari Corperation, hence, this is suppose to be the offical >Atari support roundtable. That brings up a good point. I guess the discussion about TOS4TRAP should be/have been in TraceTech's Topic... I, like many developers, haven't heard from Atari in awhile. I'm sure they are quite pleased that some of their "problem childs" are being taken care at no cost to them. Think how much they'd pay someone to look into ST Aladdin on the F030, TOS4, AW's BPS, etc. Yep, me and Mike Allen took it upon ourselves to try to come up with a workaround for the BPS. I jokingly commented to a user that he should start a campaign to get Atari to send me a token, like a Jag. Hey, maybe that's not a bad idea after all! And don't forget a few games... ;) >By the way, here is my public thankyou for LoadAlad and DC SQuish II! >As my drive is getting alittle crowded, tis time for me to persue >Data Diet II! :-) You're welcome. Not to nitpick, but it's Squish II- no DC. They liked to stick those 2 letters on most programs they distributed. Luckily I had complete control of DD. You've got the details about DDv2. Whenever you're ready... ---- J.KRACHT, >I'm confused now... is the current TOS4TRAP proggie the one that >fixes the memory leak? TOS4TRAP v1 is the version I uploaded to the libary- file #32491. It does not address the memory leak problem. The "fixes" -as you call them- are described in the docs, along with the programs they help. TOS4TRAP v2 will only be available in the F030TKIT, a direct order package in development. TOS4TRAP v2 fixes the memory leak, among other features. The rest of the package will be announced right before release. Note, TOS4TRAP v1 will continue to be supported and bugs fixed. Registered users of TOS4TRAP v1 will be given a discount on the F030TKIT equal to the amount they sent in- as hinted at in the docs. Since this may not be what registered users expected to get from their registration, I'd be more than happy to discuss this in email. >And can one pre-pay? :-) Sorry, I haven't finalized the pricing for the F030TKIT. If there's enough interest, I might be able to make special arrangements. ---- Stuart, >where is version 2 of TOS4TRAP? Please see the reply above. >On my 4 meg Falcon with TOS 4.04, it takes just under 7K for >each window open/close as you describe. If I'm not mistaken, the buffer size depends on the drive and its contents since it's used for the directory, therefore the size will vary. ---- Ken Van, >I get those messages from time to time, I think when I exit a >program and try to run another. I thought _that_ was the memory >leak in action. Maybe it's a program grabbing memory and not >releasing it when it I exit the program. I'll have to take notes. >I think it may be related to programs that open and close windows. Yes, please do jot down some notes. The amount of free memory before you run an application should be the same value when return to the desktop. TSRs being the exception... If you find that free memory is decreasing, then there is another memory leak. After trying to fix ST Aladdin's sporadic lockup problems on some Falcons, I don't know what to point at "as the fault" anymore. However, your problems and Kracht's w/True Paint aren't related to the 'memory loss' I described....famous last words. There's probably something else lurking in TOS4 which needs investigation and maybe it's the common cause. - Keith ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 189 Fri May 20, 1994 PG.MUSIC [PG-Kevin!] at 20:43 EDT Keith, Get this...
