Cogswell College is doing some production work right now with a pair of Falcons at this time; I'll touch base with James Grunke and see if he can give us a report on how they're doing in a professional environment. -Bill ============= Falcon030 Bundled Software Bulletin =============== Falcon030's with Hard Drives are currently shipping with the following software: o MultiTOS o SpeedoGDOS o Landmines o Breakout o Calappt (Personal Time Manager, Telephone Book/Dialer) o ProCalc o Talking Clock They are supposed to have (many didn't because everyone was eager to get machines shipped to dealers quickly) a mail-in card that you mail to Atari to receive: o Atari Works (Personal Integrated Productivity Package) o System Audio Manager (Accompany System Keyclicks and Events with Digitized Sounds.) o Audio Fun Machine (8-band graphic equalizer and special effects processor.) o FalconD2D (Direct-to-Disk recording system with special effects and editing.) IMPORTANT: We know exactly which dealers received machines without the mail-in cards and they are being sent their cards this week. Users that purchased machines and did not receive these cards can contact the dealer in about one week to get their card. All you have to do is fill out the card (make sure you include your dealer's name and machine's serial number); keep the verification half, and mail the other half to Atari. Machines without Hard Drives will not be shipped with SpeedoGDOS, Atari Works, or FalconD2D. They will have everything else (including the hard disk utilities in case you have your own SCSI Hard Disk). The Atari Hard Disk upgrade kits will ship with Atari Works, SpeedoGDOS, FalconD2D, as well as MultiTOS, etc. on the Hard Disk. -Bill Rehbock, Atari Corp. ======================================================================= ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 2 Mon Nov 15, 1993 B.CARRIER [Bruce] (Forwarded) I have ordered a new Falcon and I hope you folks could help me out with a couple of very basic questions about the machine that I've been worried about. What KIND of monitor should I eventually get for the Falcon that will show off its capabilities yet not be too expensive? A Multi-Sync, SVGA, VGA, RGB? Doesn't Atari make a Falcon monitor? I will not be doing anything highly technical so I don't need a high end set. Also, will my SC1224 be all right til I get the new one? (for that matter, how bad would the SC and the SM124 be on a Falcon)? I called NEC and the 3D is out of production - I had seen it mentioned here several times. There is a "new" model NEC 3D but it's over $600. Also, what would you suggest as "must have" programs/equipment for the nFalcon - Can you suggest a typical Auto Folder/DA setup that most Falcon owners have? What is ScreenBlaster, ICD Software(for the HD), etc.? I guess I'll have to shop thru something like Computer Shopper to get the monitor so any help would be appreciated. Did you miss your Megas as much as I think I'm going to miss mine? Why must us Atarians always have to "keep up"?! Thanks, Bruce ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 3 Mon Nov 15, 1993 R.WATSON15 [Wayne Watson] (Forwarded) Keith, Here is my vote for a MSTE version of the patch. ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 4 Mon Nov 15, 1993 T.MAGEE1 [Todd] (Forwarded) I got my NEC 3D from USA Flex for $349 new with 2year warranty. 1-800-944-1900 for USA Flex. If you get one check out the demo of Blow Up 030. Wish I was a programmer so I could see how difficult making this patch between Falcon/Aladdin really is. I would definetely pay the shareware fee. I hate GEnie without it. Todd ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 5 Mon Nov 15, 1993 R.IRBY3 [Roy] (Forwarded) Does anyone know of a desk accessory relocation program that will work on the Falcon? Roy. ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 6 Mon Nov 15, 1993 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] (Forwarded) Steve, But that's exactly what I do with STalker and Aladdin, and that's why I like the combination so much. While STalker is downloading files from GEnie, I am reading messages and replying in Aladdin. Aladdin is on Modem 1, and STalker on Modem 2. (Not even my Windows setup lets me run two comm programs on the same port (without a fat dialog that tells me to choose one or the other). I don['t blame Aladdin for the way it acts, especially when I can just use the other port. D'noski, Yeah, and it should take the user's hard drive along, too, when it self- destructs, right? :) Al ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 7 Mon Nov 15, 1993 T.HEBEL [Spud Boy] (Forwarded) See Flat, I am still very interested in Phoenix II. I am sure it will be a wonderful program. Let me know when you get it. ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 8 Tue Nov 16, 1993 J.KRACHT [James Kracht] (Forwarded) Bruce: What kind of monitor you want is a very subjective question. I'm using both my SC1435 (for TrueColor modes, and art applications -- and by the way the interlace flicker is NOT that bad at all, compared to some systems I've used). For other work, I'm using a MultiScan monitor (basically SVGA with a wider range of vertical and horizontal scan rates). Atari does not make a Falcon-specific monitor. As for "must have" programs, I would urge you to download (if you haven't already) the latest version of Mouse Boot (v3.5e). It works great on a Falcon, and its "mock-GEM" bootup screen looks fantastic on the Falcon (impress your friends). You should also invest in the ICD Pro Utilities package. It is second to none. The features and power it gives you are really amazing. I don't miss my STe at all. For a few months, I still used it for telecoms, but as soon as I started fiddling around with Storm (available online here) I now use my Falcon for EVERYTHING. I haven't turned on my STe for over two weeks -- startling, considering I used it every day of my life for the last two years. I would also recommend ScreenBlaster, a hardware/software combination that allows your Falcon to do many interesting (and weird, in some cases) resolutions, that the machine normally does not support. Also, your SC1224 should work great with the Falcon. Just make sure you get the right cable adaptor from your dealer. I would also urge you to invest in the Falcon-enhanced version of Warp 9 from Codehead. It is just the best. I'm sure I missed something here, so if I think of it, I'll let you know. You really will like your Falcon. James ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 9 Tue Nov 16, 1993 C.OINES1 [Chazz] (Forwarded) Bruce, If you don't intend to get a ScreenBlaster (and I suggest you do), any old VGA monitor will be fine. If you do get the ScreenBlaster, then by all means, buy as much monitor as you can afford. I've got a Packard Bell trisynch SVGA monitor at home, and when I bring my Falcon to work, I hijack the Mac's NEC 4D. I used the SC1224 for quite a while on the Falcon, and it worked fine for me, but interlace doesn't bug me nearly as much as it does most of the people online here ;) The SM124 works fine, too; but color's much more fun. ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 10 Tue Nov 16, 1993 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] (Forwarded) Heck, I've got a memory leak, and it's not in my TOS! Bruce, NEC was selling the 3D as of a month ago - the original model. So are some discounters, at about $350-$400. You should get an SVGA monitor for the Falcon, although it will work with the SC1224 in the mean time. I'd look for a 15-inch, flat-screen monitor capable of at least 1024X768. Roy, Geneva lets you load desk accessories from any location, even on the fly. It also has a few other features. It's a must-have program. Al Fasoldt, The Falcon has a single modem port- device #7, SCC channel B. The other port is the LAN (LocalTalk) connector- device #8, SCC channel A. The MFP serial port got left out just to save a few pennies I guess.... :( David Fairweather, Correct. I sent GEmail to Tim last week concerning this hypothetical project and requested release permission. At the same time, I asked him who to contact at GEnie, the copyright holder, and queried about shareware. Tim called me that night and we talked for a couple of hours. He gave his (& Griffin's) permission for release and then he personally contacted the GEnie rep(s) who subsequently gave their permission. Bill B., Actually I really don't want anybody to send anything as of yet... Let's hold off until a formal announcement is made. Rest assured that I'll make every effort to have this thing available immediately (ie by GEFmail) if/when it's ready. The registration fee would then be snail mailed at the user's convenience. D'noski, I, too, don't see uploading the real thing as a viable alternative. Even though that is how shareware is supposed to work... We'll see if a demo/crippled version can be made. Sure, I would like to make a trial version for everyone to test, but it may be a word of mouth, trust release. For example, have beta testers vouch for it. I don't know how a 'text file announcement only release' fits into "shareware"....we may find out though. ;) - Keith [TraceTech] ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 13 Tue Nov 16, 1993 T.MAGEE1 [Todd] (Forwarded) What kind of shareware fee are we talking? I am quite sick of the clutter in my root directory, and I also just received the Falcon compatible Warp 9. Seems it's not compatible with Multitos. I was wondering, how much ram does Geneva take up? 4 megs on this falcon is really seeming kinda small now, but the upgrade to 14 megs is a litte steep (>$700, eh?). O-ZONE, Hmmm. I already use XBoot. It allows you to enable/disable accessories in any given path, but I don't think that it actually redirects the OS to load the ACC's from that path. Right?? ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 17 Wed Nov 17, 1993 B.POSTON [Barney] (Forwarded) James, What is the ICD Pro Utilities Package all about? Where can it be purchased? Sean, You also have a memory leak on your Falcon! Perhaps everyone who detects this problem could post which version of TOS was installed in their machine. Next time I see a Falcon I will check to see if it has that problem. ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 19 Wed Nov 17, 1993 J.KRACHT [James Kracht] (Forwarded) See Flat: I've got a "memory leak" (is that what we're calling it now?) on a 4 meg TOS 4.04 system. Barney: ICD Pro Utilities is a package for your hard drive. It is the most powerful HD formatting/partitioning/bootup software for ANY Atari. The Pro level of utilities also comes with CleanUp, a hard drive defragmenter. Dozens of other utilities come with it, including a program to test your drive(s) transfer rates. You can get it direct from ICD for around $50. I highly recommend it for use on a Falcon. You can type m1220 to get to the ICD Roundtable here. Ordering info is there, I'm sure. Sean: The memory leak is DETRIMENTAL to True Paint. Load three or four GIF pictures, close them all, and try to load, and you crash with an out of memory error. I'm going to inform Oregon Research about this (maybe something can be written into the next version of True Paint to fix it, at least for True Paint). James '*s ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 20 Wed Nov 17, 1993 STEVE-J [DrHfuhruhurr] (Forwarded) Well, according to Bob Gleadow (head of Atari U.K.), through Summer 1993, between 13,000 and 14,000 Falcon030s were sold in all of Europe (about 40% of those being in Germany). I think it would be a pretty safe guess that around 20,000 to 25,000 have been sold worldwide. Also of interest is that, apparently, Atari is interested in licensing other companies to produce ST/TT clone systems, if any are interested (since, I would guess, Atari's 'done' with them). ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 21 Wed Nov 17, 1993 ICDINC (Forwarded) Barney and James, Everything that JAmes said except that Cleanup is not a defrag utility. This is a 14meg Falcon. Ugh... --Kevin ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 23 Wed Nov 17, 1993 K.VANDELLEN [Ken Van] (Forwarded) Todd, I would pay the shareware fee, too. What's Blow Up? James, I'm still a little confused about monitors. I have a multisynch (or multiscan?) SVGA. Does it not support TrueColor? Someone may have done this already for me, but a review of which modes or resolutions are available with the Atari color monitors and SVGA monitors would be useful. It seems something is missing either way. Anyone know why, when I'm booting the computer and it gets into booting the control module for CPX it clicks and the screen changes tint (or brightness) slightly. It doesn't change modes. The final desktop icons are there in their final size. Al, I have a memory leak, too. Maybe one in TOS, too. Re: Geneva, does it do what MultiDesk does, or do you use them both? Keith, Glad to hear the legalities worked out. You sounded like you're going to GEmail it with fee to be sent snail mail, and then you said you didn't "see uploading the real thing as a viable alternative". I guess you'll tell us what you decide when the time comes. Ken Van ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 24 Wed Nov 17, 1993 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] (Forwarded) Roy, Geneva takes up about 150K. I am now running 896*608. Allows you to fit a lot onto your screen. The 896*608 is interlaced, but at a 90hz refresh rate you only see any flicker if you look for it. There is a demo of it on GEnie. The demo will NOT go to 256/truecolor modes, though. Considering the resolution is so big, the flicker is also very tiny. l8r Todd ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 26 Wed Nov 17, 1993 FAIRWEATHER [David] (Forwarded) My Falcon with TOS 4.04 also has the "memory leak." Will it take a new version of TOS to plug this leak or can Atari stop the leak with a "patch"? ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 27 Wed Nov 17, 1993 A.FASOLDT [Al Fasoldt] (Forwarded) Ken Van, VGA and Super VGA monitors (and their cousins, Extended VGA monitors and so on) are analog color or gray-scale display devices. This means their colors or gray scales follow the range of signal variations that are sent to them from the computer or graphics card. Older-style monitors, such as IBM's notorious CGA models and the semi-successful EGA displays, derive their colors from a digital signal. Analog monitors follow the signal's virtually infinite variations (their output is analogous to the signal input), while digital monitors are switched from one preset color to another by a prearranged, and limited, signal state. To Atari's credit, its 1985-vintage color monitor used analog, and not digital, methods, and that's why an SC1224 can easily show thousands more colors than the standard ST is able to output; all you need to do is feed it the right analog signal, and it will respond. VGA-class monitors work the same way, of course. All the talk about 256 colors in the VGA standard merely confuses the matter, since this limit of 256 colors is not a monitor limitation in any sense but rather a restriction imposed within the computer or the graphics subsystem (or, in fact, in the software itself). "True color," which everyone talks about but few users understand, simply refers to a condition in which the display's individual pixels can assume any color that the analog signal assigns to them. And this, in turn, means that the much-vaunted 16.7-million-color capability of so-called "True Color" displays is impossible in practive unless the monitor contains 16.7 million separate picture elements. That would be one heck of a big monitor, with an exceptionally tight dot pitch, to be sure. What actually takes place in practice is a choice of thousands of colors from the palette of 16.7 million in "True Color." And, yes, your VGA-class monitor can show thousands of colors, easily, without a strain. So can the SC1224. BTW, the Color CPX does the same thing on both systems here, and always has done that, in fact. I suspect that the default color setup and the one that is taken as the default in the CPX are just not the same, no matter what. Al ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 28 Wed Nov 17, 1993 K.GERDES [TraceTech] (Forwarded) Todd, Sorry, the shareware fee amount won't be finalized until a release announcement is posted. FWIW, the replies in email suggest a $10 minimum. Ken Van, Ooops. My mistake. I meant that uploading the real thing 'to the file library' was not a viable alternative. I know all too well the ins and outs of shareware on both sides of it! For shareware to work correctly, we all know that a "gimmick" must be used. I am looking at two options for distribution: 1) Upload a text file to the ST-RT & ST Aladdin File Libraries containing full details about the program. If a user decides to get the program, he/she would send GEmail to me. I would then send the program in GEFmail, expecting the registration fee by snail mail within let's say 30 days. 2) Upload a "crippled" version of the program to the two Libraries. Obtaining the release version would follow the same steps as 1) above. This crippled version would have some type of time limit and/or a baud rate limit. Keep in mind that making a crippled version would add time to the development cycle. ;) These alternatives give a little better hope for return, although trust is still involved....which is good and still in the spirit of shareware. Everybody that requests the file will receive it, period. No questions asked. I take that back, maybe a little survey. :) Only I will know 'how many' received it. No "faceless" download count. I will also know 'who', but that is beside the point- no collectors will be hired. - Keith ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 29 Wed Nov 17, 1993 T.MAGEE1 [Todd] (Forwarded) I would like to get on the list for it. If I knew the price and address, I would mail the fee right now! Todd ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 30 Wed Nov 17, 1993 J.KRACHT [James Kracht] (Forwarded) ICD: CleanUp _isn't_ a defragmenter. Yes, that. Ken Van: You're only going to see True Color in 320x240 on the Falcon with a VGA monitor. Still, it DOES look good. Using the ScreenBlaster, you can widen VGA "low-res" considerably, giving you more room to work. The "click" you're hearing with the CPX is the volume of the internal speaker being set. The TOS colors a a tad brighter than the CPX defaults, too. James ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 31 Wed Nov 17, 1993 O-ZONE [Flakes] (Forwarded) Roy, If you go to the Parameters menu in Xboot and click on the little box next to "Accessories" under "Paths" it brings up the file selector and you can put them anywhere you want. All this is providing you have a current version I suppose. ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 32 Wed Nov 17, 1993 C.LABELLE [Tintin] (Forwarded) Bruce, An SM124/SC1224 combination with a Monitor Master switch is good. I used that combination for the first few months. The photographs on the SC1224 are splendid, and you can overscan. You can use True Color at 640x400+ overscan. It is even OK for hi-rez text in "interlaced mode", better known as "flicker mode". In fact, only the thin lines (in windows borders, for example) flicker. If you keep your contrast and brightness at medium level, you can work comfortably enough. I still use the SC1224. I replaced the SM124 by a monochrome VGA _real_ cheap. This way I get 80 extra lines of resolution, and 64 or 256 shades of grey. The desktop (3-D buttons, etc) look nice, and the B/W pictures too. The trouble is, I have to manually change adapters. I don't miss my Mega :-) You'll appreciate your Falcon's speed, HD diskette, and the sound and graphics will astonish you. A downside is all this take memory. Out of 4 megs, you can be left with little more than one after MultiTOS, SpeedoGDOS and SAM are loaded. A good reason to get MouseBoot so to load only what you need for that session. Thunderbird, I recall a while back that you prefered a tower case. You'll be glad to learn that such a case is available for around $150. It's called the "Full Metal Falcon030". Roy, Geneva takes only 120K, according to a magazine article. I doesn't multitask with the desktop, so you'll need NeoDesk 4.0, or accessories to replace the desktop functions. The options offered up by the TT (and lots of newer software) sometimes are overlooked... witness the fact that STraight Fax is one of the few programs that allows you to select the printer (device 21-30) when using SpeedoGDOS. Unfortunately, the only time I _need_ that function is when I'm printing _to_ STFax format, not from STFax. I'm glad to see Atari Works supports the options too. Too bad WordFlair doesn't. Hmmm.. I have tried what you suggested just for the _ of it. I don't think that the Path line in Xboot actually redirects the OS to that path to load accessories from. To quote the v2.5 update addendum: Accessories You can now specify a complete path name where the accessories are stored. Thus XBoot now will work with those utilities that allow loading the accessories from a folder instead of the root directory. end quote. I have been using Xboot 3 w/ Accessory 1.3 on my ST for quite a while. XBoot doesn't seem to do the job alone. Perhaps I am missing something. Right now, the Falcon030 is the only product officially in Atari's current computer line. Atari hasn't officially announced that the STE/MSTE/TT030 are discontinued (yet), but the Falcon030 is the only one currently in production. The GE-Soft Eagle (the TT030 clone, which is a lot better than the original TT030 -- the ENTIRE machine runs at 50MHz, has 2 VME slots, and can be easily upgraded to a 68040) is set to go into production at any time (if not already) and will reportedly cost around DM4000-DM5000 (about $2500-$3200 at current exchange rates). Right now my detailed info on the newer boards is limited, hopefully that will change before too long , though I'm not holding my breath. For the most part, ALL of the newer boards offer greater speed, better compatibility (productivity stuff anyway), and at LEAST Falcon-level graphics.... In fact, I don't think any of the new boards would balk at 1024 x 768 x 256..... which is MUCH better than what the Falcon can manage. As for true color.... well, let's just say that ALL are impressive. So which is best? Well, so far (based on what I've managed to overhear) I'd say it depends on what you want to do. You just knew there had to be one... ;) A couple of testers have run into a lockup problem on the Falcon. But, like they said, they can live with it just to use Aladdin on the F030. :) FWIW, the system lockup intermittently occurs when you close a reply window. I've seen a few of his posts and recall his 'handle' being PG Music. I'm hoping that he could shed some additional light on this Band-In-A-Box compatibility thing with the Falcon. I DID talk to PG Music today and they reaffirmed my suspicions that, indeed, BB currently DOESN'T work with the Falcon, but that the next upgrade (due out in early '94) should take care of that(?) Another Falcon disappointment? Gee, why am I NOT surprised? MCH ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 134 Tue Dec 07, 1993 C.FLUEGEL [Curt] at 01:50 EST MCH.. like people have said... it works fine on the Falcon you just have to use 80column 2 color mode (if you are doing midi stuff odds are this is the mode you use anyway..) not sure on the mail address.. check in the MIDI BB and im sure you can find him there... Russ ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 136 Tue Dec 07, 1993 M.STEFANI [MCH] at 03:17 EST Curt, I don't know if you're actually familiar with Band-In-A-Box or not. It may 'basically' work in 80 column 2 color mode on the Falcon, but it DOESN'T work properly. Any attempt, from what I've seen, to load a 'user' style results in a return to the desktop and system crash. And, I might add, this rez looks terrible and 'pales' in comparison to what I'm accustomed to seeing on my 'lowly' 1040ST and SM124 monitor. As I've said, PG Music, the manufacturer of BB, concurs with what I've seen. They claim that the next upgrade WILL be Falcon-compatible. Having people (including my dealer) saying that "it works fine on the Falcon" is what got me confused in the first place. I was practically tearing my hair out thinking that I was doing something wrong! MCH ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 137 Tue Dec 07, 1993 M.POCHE [Mick] at 03:17 EST Russ - I believe I saw a message around here earlier tonight from Dan McNamee stating that Atari is aware of this problem, and that "it is being looked into". I have noticed it on my TT and my Falcon. ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 147 Wed Dec 08, 1993 R.BENNETT7 [Rodney] at 21:35 EST Howdy! KenO., Keith has done an Excellent JOB on LoadAlad, and I am sure ALL the Falcon030 owners will greatly appreiate his efforts and I am sure that they will indeed show this with payment toward his shareware plea. I tend to agree with you, just as with Atari Corp, GEnie comes up with some pretty good excuses and leaves it hanging or drops the ball for months. If it weren't for the 2nd, 3rd etc... party developers supporting this roundtable and answering questions and 'fixing' problems I would of canceled my subscription to GEnie and probley would of just given up any kind of hope regarding my Atari product purchases. Yeah, Yeah, Yeah.. I know Atari states that they are busy pushing the Jaguar, but one GOOD representive from Atari Corperation could of been left behind to take care of the Computer assets of this roundtable to get the answers and not run around answers regarding the new (or is it old now) Falcon030 computer. I know this has been stated before... I enjoy working/playing on my Falcon030, but I don't like how Atari Corperation is treating it's 'computer' userbase. This may sound negative Atari Corperation, but your loosing the most important asset toward any bussiness, and that is the support from your userbase. Start supporting the products that you sell and the people that buy them or you may find that those loyal Atari owners/supporters of your excellent products dwindle to nothing and the Atari logo forever burned, Jaguar or not. I am no bussiness expert believe me, but common sense will tell you that the 'customer is always right' and the customer(s) satification will keep them coming back, once you loose this edge, you have to really make up for it. And believe me, coming out with a product that is superior to anything else on the market is not the only thing you must do to get the Atari Logo back in homes, it's trust in the company by the customer and you need to still prove that to majority. Not to mention your full support for the 2nd, 3rd etc hardware/software developers as well, if not without them I guarrantee you would NOT have a userbase as you do now. Ok, The reason I sound so harsh, is that within the FidoNet in the Atari ST, I just downloaded a QWK packet and started reading... it use to be good information, it's all negative now in the last 2 months I've gone on trying to change the attitudes of those in that particular network, but more once loyal Atari owners have joined in and supported the negative side of Atari Corperation than I can handle. I am out numbered and I am starting to see their point as clear as day. Patience is at a all time low... I don't think anything I say positively can make a difference anymore. Don't get me wrong, there are alot of positive things to say, but is anybody listening anymore? Don't stop me now... I am definitely on a role! :-) Rodney ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 150 Thu Dec 09, 1993 B.KOLINS1 [Brian] at 03:22 EST Stupid question of the day... What is this ALERT DA 'pose to do? With delta compression, it can compresses an average of 3 to 1 on the fly, and allows up to 400 frames on a 4 meg Falcon (uses the DSP.) Also it allows morphing. The example they used, took 15 minutes to morph a full 5 frame complex object. It would take the 1040st 10 hours to do the same, and the Falcon about 2.5 hours, without the DSP support. They said that even a 486 had trouble keeping with this programs morphing capabilies (486 DX that is). vince ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 156 Thu Dec 09, 1993 R.HOEKSTRA1 [RandyH] at 23:28 EST I posted a plea for help with ISHAR on the Falcon in the Falcon Games topic, but have not seen any response. It sounds pretty interesting. ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 163 Fri Dec 10, 1993 J.KRACHT [James Kracht] at 03:22 EST Vince: Date: 12 Jul 93 19:46:48 From: The Flying Falcon{em} of 90:1/0 To: All Subj: Falcon / FloppyShop Press Release: PRESS RELEASE - Chroma 24 for the Atari Falcon 030 An Art Package, Animation and Morphing Studio Chroma 24 is a revolutionary new art/animation/morphing package currently under development for the Atari Falcon 030. Written by Douglas Little of Black Scorpion Software and PhotoChrome fame, it encompasses the best features of the popular packages of this type on the Atari ST, Commodore Amiga and IBM PC. A number of features are unique to Chroma 24 and countless others are implemented in a completely different manner to that used in other packages. The emphasis is on ease of use, combined with powerful features, making Chroma 24 the natural choice for professional and hobbyist alike. The package runs in 256 colour and true colour modes. It has the ability to import all common picture formats (and animation types) and saves in the most useful ones for the mode selected. Chroma 24 is still in development at the moment, albeit in an advanced stage. We expect it to be released towards the end of 1993 and the retail price to be under 100. In addition to all the 'standard' features of an art/animation package, Chroma 24 includes the following:- Very fast since it is written in 100% 68030 assembler and it doesn't use GEM. Instead, it uses its own custom written interface which has been designed with user friendliness in mind and is similar in operation to GEM. = You can select any resolution from within the package itself. You can even change resolution in the middle of a session (although your work must be saved first). = Any picture (or animation) may be loaded into any resolution and will be quickly and professionally scaled to fit when loaded into lower resolutions. = Different canvas sizes may be specified for your work. This allows you to work on pictures which are larger than the actual screen size, with the monitor acting as a window to this virtual screen. Canvas sizes supported are those used on the Atari ST, TT and Falcon, Commodore Amiga, IBM PC, Next, Sun and Hewlett Packard Worksations. = Chroma 24 runs in 256 colour or true colour modes with similar options available for both, although specific tools will be balanced in favour of the currently selected resolution. = Chroma 24 features everything from standard drawing and animation tools to 3D texture mapping and controlled distortion and morphing. Distortions on broadcast quality images must be seen to be believed. = The morphing technique used is commonly referred to as field warping. It allows the user full control over the morphing process, unlike the more commonly implemented mesh warping. Our implementation of it uses the DSP56001 (written in DSP56001 assembler) for increased speed and accuracy. A typical 320x200 24-bit true colour frame will take anything from a few seconds to a few minutes to render, depending on complexity. The degree of speed and accuracy offered is unrivalled on any micro computer and is only possible on the Falcon 030. = Our flexible virtual zoom window is transparent to the user since all tools and functions operate regardless of zoom level and canvas size, with many keyboard macros being available during mouse dragging operations. = Chroma 24 is very memory efficient. By use of its own internal fast compression and decompression techniques, it is possible to load substantially larger animations into memory than would normally be appropriate for that fitted to your machine. This is completely transparent to the user and has no effect on the speed at which the package runs. Further information will be issued nearer to release date. Chroma 24 will be available around Christmas 1993 from:- Floppyshop, PO Box 273, Aberdeen. The first thing I noticed about your setup is that you are not using the Fast Serial patch. I found this to be necessary even without MultiTos, but especially critical when online running under MultiTos. For the benefit of those who don't know Fast Serial is the SCC modem port equivalent to what SerialPatch is on the normal ST serial port. Fast Serial handles flow control on the Falcon and on the SCC modem ports on the TT and MSTe. Some term progs need Fast Serial and others won't work with it. I have found it to be necessary for reliable communication with Aladdin but Storm will not go online if Fast Serial is resident. I believe another tester stated that Flash and Stalker did not work with it either. Symptoms of flow control problems that Fast Serial may help are - garbled or missed chars (as with line noise) or RT messages dl'd and read as one long message by Aladdin. Here is my setup for using Aladdin under MultiTos: Auto folder ---------- SPEAKOFF FPATCH2 BMAPFIX2 FAST_SER MACCEL34 SPDGDOS MINT Accessories ----------- XCONTROL ALERT Beyond that I pretty much used the default setup of MultiTos. Besides, they make me think I'm using an Amiga! J.KRACHT - Yes, Incredible Universe is, well, incredible! They are supposed to be opening 6 new stores in 1994 (the next one in Miami) in addition to the 3 already operating (in Arlington, TX; Portland/Wilsonville, OR; and Dallas, TX). It's quite impressive. Inside, they have 5-6 'sub- stores' (e.g. music/CD/video, small electronics, camera, video game, and computer software stores as well as a small Radio Shack kinda store) and the rest is a huge, warehouse-type area that's split into smaller areas (like video, computer, audio, major appliances, and a kitchen center for people designing/re-modeling their kitchens). Then there are some rooms for car stereos, home theatre systems, and higher-end audio 'listening' rooms. There's also the 'Black Hole' which is a room that contains discounted products (returned/repaired/demo merchandise). In the area where the checkout counters are where most of the small appliances are. Plus they have a karaoke studio where customers can go record their own karaoke performances, a fairly large credit office, an entrance hall with a huge block of TVs and a live music/video DJ, and finally a few small restaurants (the store in Wilsonville has a Pizza Hut, that only serves salads and personal pan pizzas, and a Mrs. Field's (ULTRA-EXPENSIVE!) Cookies). Does that sound incredible to you? ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 175 Sat Dec 11, 1993 REALM [Joey] at 06:26 EST It's possible (I think) to create your own interface and still use parts of GEM at the same time. I'm pretty new to all this, and am just figuring out the difference between just booting with a different driver, and reformatting the whole drive. I guess I don't have to do the latter, do I? And by the way, the sea of noise turned out to be due to Radio Shack adaptors as far as I can tell. Having gotten rid of that, I am now trying to track down the source of all this high pitched whining. A lot of it disappears when I turn off my old sm125 monitor, but not ALL of it. Does this mean I have to buy a new monitor? I'm already over budget. . . ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 180 Sat Dec 11, 1993 DMJ [dmj] at 15:48 EST Steve-J & Joey, A custom interface can, on occasion, be a fresh breeze in the otherwise stale look of GEM. With single-tasking TOS, it's not a big deal to have your program not use GEM... since just about nothing else is running anyway. However, with MultiTOS and Geneva now easily available, using GEM and being "well-behaved" takes on new importance. For this reason, I will not be using my custom interface in any new programs. It has caused too many problems (getting it to work just under Geneva required some fiddling) so I've just chalked it up as a very valuable learning experience. I did learn quite a bit about interfaces because of it, and now I appreciate GEM better. -dmj ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 181 Sat Dec 11, 1993 ARCHIVIST [Charlie] at 16:00 EST Darcy, the high pitched noise could also be RF interferance. I had to reformat with Atari Utils and boot with the Atari Booter to get CA to work at all. ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 185 Sun Dec 12, 1993 R.BENNETT7 [Rodney] at 00:36 EST B.SEMANN [BOSEM], Thanks for the info on your setup, I'll give LoadAlad another try in that configuration. This may seem tedious, but I wanted to point out, that I have not used a FAST serial patch program on the Falcon as of yet. I have NOT experenced any problems with garbled characters, aborted d/l's or u/l's and the transfer rates are right along the max cps rate that you could get at 14.4k v.32/v.42bis. I'll try the FAST serial patch though with Multi-Tos and see if that helps. I want to point out within the LoadAlad configuration, that I have ONLY RTS/CTS ON. I got garabled characters and weird performance with it as BOTH or XON/XOFF. With just RTS/CTS ON, no problems. Rodney ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 186 Sun Dec 12, 1993 PG.MUSIC [PG-Kevin] at 05:35 EST DMJ, I agree that you can use GEM just enough to make a program work under GEM/MultiTOS/Geneva in a manner that is very nice. I like the inteface on Emagic's Notator Logic for Atari. It is very System 7ish. Really cool. Now, if only it can be made to work with Geneva. :) --Kevin ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 187 Sun Dec 12, 1993 M.TROUPE [Helium] at 10:04 EST Darcy, You might want to try moving the monitor further away from the computer with extender cables. Look at the hard drive if you have an external since they may be adding noise. ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 188 Sun Dec 12, 1993 D.PHILLIPS24 [Darcy] at 20:18 EST I seem to have a serious noise problem with this Falcon. I have tried a totally different monitor, moving the monitor four feet away, turning off the hard drive and anything else I could find, and wrapping the computer in tin foil. None of these things made ANY change in this high pitched tone that I hear when Cubase Audio finishes booting, that changes pitch when I toggle the (audio) monitor switch on and off(from input to playback), and that disappears when I quit the program. This is all with nothing plugged in to the input, and headphones only plugged into the output. HELLLLP. Anybody got any ideas? I still haven't paid for this Falcon, and under these conditions I don't think I can. . . ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 189 Sun Dec 12, 1993 C.OATES2 [Chris] at 21:08 EST System 7 is really cool? Ugh... :P I prefer MultiTOS, thank you... :) I hope Logic isn't TOO much like Sys 7. I might have to switch then. (waiting for my Logic Upgrade) ~Chris ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 190 Sun Dec 12, 1993 PG.MUSIC [PG-Kevin] at 21:48 EST Chris, I mean the new 'look'. Not the Slowness of Sys7. Logic is really becoming a breeze to work with quickly. It really is a logical layout. --Kevin ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 191 Sun Dec 12, 1993 R.BENNETT7 [Rodney] at 22:40 EST D.PHILLIPS24 [Darcy], Have you installed Fpatch2.prg and BMapfix2.prg? Also turn the gain to '0' on both channels in your Sound.Cpx setup, and set the volume to around 4-5... this may help... I hope. Rodney ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 192 Mon Dec 13, 1993 FAIRWEATHER [David] at 00:08 EST Darcy, do D2D Demo or the other shareware/PD digital audio programs give you the same trouble on your Falcon? ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 194 Mon Dec 13, 1993 K.GERDES [TraceTech] at 19:41 EST I have forwarded the LoadAlad messages to the Load Aladdin support topic- ST Aladdin RT, CAT 2 TOP 6. - Keith [TraceTech] ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 195 Tue Dec 14, 1993 D.PHILLIPS24 [Darcy] at 21:56 EST )I'm trying to get this (insert mild expletive deleted)Falcon to recognize the SCSI drive I booted it from for a few days before I took it in for a mod to the audio ins. Everything is there as I left it on the drive, I looked from my ST with ICD Link. But from the Falcon(with Falcon updated HD utilities) I get: AHDI.PRG: "SCSI 0(I have it set to 0): Identification Unavailable. Not Bootloaded". Yippee. HDINSTALL.PRG: "No available logical drive for installation of driver" I can see SHDRIVER.SYS there on the C drive. I can't even format it, when I do, it says "scanning connected units", then comes up with "Fatal Error". The best kind. I've tried booting from a floppy with AHDI.PRG in the Auto folder. Same message. And lots of trying to install Icons and Devices to no avail. I mean Geez, I'm really green to all this Hard Drive stuff, but it seems to me that something in here should be working. Beyond reconnecting everything together(which I've done), and the possibility of a bad SCSI cable, what can I do? Can't even boot Cubase Audio without the hard drive. You MAY have a Falcon with the ground spring on the wrong side. That causes ALL kinds of grief, but is easy to fix. --Kevin ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 198 Wed Dec 15, 1993 K.VANDELLEN [Ken Van] at 07:43 EST Kevin, What are the symptoms of the ground spring problem? Ken Van ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 199 Wed Dec 15, 1993 PG.MUSIC [PG-Kevin] at 07:57 EST Sporadic crashes, bootup crashes, nothing working right at odd times, very intermittent. The spring problem causes the internal IDE drive to have a flaky ground. The flakey ground wreaks havoc with the HD's powerdown mechanism (these HDs were made for laptops) and results in random powerdowns (sometimes for less than 1/2 second or so). You know what powering down the drive in the middle of an access can do to a file, right? So effectively, more & more of your software gets damaged until almost NOTHING seems to work right. I've seen 4 Falcons with that problem so far. Seems there is a bad batch. Fortunately it is VERY easy to cure. Just move the little ground spring to its proper location, then re- partition the drive and reinstall all of the software from the floppy masters. --Kevin ------------ Category 30, Topic 3 Message 200 Wed Dec 15, 1993 D.FREELAND [SAXMAN] at 15:13 EST Kevin: That is on a IDE, I beleive Darcy is trying to get a SCSI drive to work.
