Cogswell College is doing some production work right now with a pair of Falcons at this time; I'll touch base with James Grunke and see if he can give us a report on how they're doing in a professional environment. -Bill ============= Falcon030 Bundled Software Bulletin =============== Falcon030's with Hard Drives are currently shipping with the following software: o MultiTOS o SpeedoGDOS o Landmines o Breakout o Calappt (Personal Time Manager, Telephone Book/Dialer) o ProCalc o Talking Clock They are supposed to have (many didn't because everyone was eager to get machines shipped to dealers quickly) a mail-in card that you mail to Atari to receive: o Atari Works (Personal Integrated Productivity Package) o System Audio Manager (Accompany System Keyclicks and Events with Digitized Sounds.) o Audio Fun Machine (8-band graphic equalizer and special effects processor.) o FalconD2D (Direct-to-Disk recording system with special effects and editing.) IMPORTANT: We know exactly which dealers received machines without the mail-in cards and they are being sent their cards this week. Users that purchased machines and did not receive these cards can contact the dealer in about one week to get their card. All you have to do is fill out the card (make sure you include your dealer's name and machine's serial number); keep the verification half, and mail the other half to Atari. Machines without Hard Drives will not be shipped with SpeedoGDOS, Atari Works, or FalconD2D. They will have everything else (including the hard disk utilities in case you have your own SCSI Hard Disk). The Atari Hard Disk upgrade kits will ship with Atari Works, SpeedoGDOS, FalconD2D, as well as MultiTOS, etc. on the Hard Disk. -Bill Rehbock, Atari Corp. ======================================================================= ------------ Category 14, Topic 41 Message 2 Fri Oct 29, 1993 B.KANTOR at 00:07 EDT does anyone know if cachexxx and foldrxxx have any use on the falcon? thanks - bruce ------------ Category 14, Topic 41 Message 3 Fri Oct 29, 1993 T.HEBEL [Spud Boy] at 01:09 EDT B Man, ANy clues on the release date from Digital interface from COMPO? Oh, here looks good! Have I stumbled onto the American dream? Eight column true color mode on a multisynch monitor with NO special adaptors. Er, make that eighty columns. By putting RESFOOLER in my auto folder and setting up my ScreenBlaster withh a seperate inf file for a RGB monitor, I was able to induce my Princeton Ultra 1400 into displaying an interlaced high res true color screen. The actual resolution is much more than 640X400 (around 800X500 and some change), but it works. Now I can run most of those RGB demos. Of course since it isn't a sdtandard screen res, non-GEM programs don't always like it, but GEMified programs work like a charm. Now I really need that 14meg upgrade . You Falcon owners should check this out and see if you can duplicate my success. If needed, I can post the contents of my nightmare... er, Auto folder. James, Installing a FPU is rather simple, open the Falcon, unscrew the power supply, you will see an empty socket. You will need a 68882 Flat Pak, Not the PGA version! There is a dot on the FPU and on the empty socket, line them up and carefully and evenly insert the chip. Be carefull to not touch the pins as static could waste it. I am planning to order a FPU monday, I have found a great price on a 33Mhz chip, why 33? Jim Allen might have a 33Mhz mod soon for the FPU. I was qouted $69 for the chip. LONG POST AHEAD!---- RE: 80 column true color on a multisynch monitor COMPO, Care to comment on this? Damien, As far as I can tell compared to RF output, my computer's speed seems normal. Of course 80 column true color is always pretty sluggish. So is 40 column come to think of it . I suppose all the extra pixels would slow things down a little further over stock 80 column, but nothing perceptible by me. The interlace is terrible, abysmal, horrendous, and an eye-killer: meaning about the same as output to a SC 1224 or a TV ;-) Gregg, I wrote that in the early am before my first cup of coffee. I have since taken notes for a more reasonable explanation (keep reading, nudge nudge). B Man, I am using a Princeton Ultra 1400 *multisynch* VGA monitor (not RGB) that is capable of handling all ST/Falcon resolutions. I doubt this would work on a VGA monitor and would probably do some expensive damage. In any event... All, These are steps to took to attain 80 column true color on a multisynch monitor monitor using the Falcon 030's VGA monitor adaptor and Compo's ScreenBlaster. This has worked for me with no ill effects but I take no responsibility for any damages you may suffer while attempting this. If you are not using a multisynch monitor capable of synching with the rates listed then do not attempt this as it won't work and may cause hardware damage. Back up your SBLASTER.INF file. Using SB_MONI.PRG, set up another INF file using Genlock as your MONITOR CONNECT. Choose SC1224 as the monitor. I also set the VGA and RGB to SC1224, but I really don't know if it makes any difference. A boot manager will make this easier to deal with as you will need to reinstall your original INF file to get things back to normal. I have INF files SBLASVGA and SBLASRGB that XBOOT renames to SBLASTER.INF when I boot. Also set your NEWDESK.INF file to boot up in true color (yeah, 40 column true color is fine ;-) In my AUTO folder, I have the following programs ordered as listed: RES_F - ResFooler SBLASTER - ScreenBlaster MACCEL34 - Atari's mouse accelerator FMC - Force Media Change DATADIET - DataDiet LGSELECT - Little Green Selector Since this resolution eats up so much memory my only DA is usually MAXIFILE. I often run with different setups, but this one is what I use most often and appears problem-free. MTOS also runs fine. When you reboot you will (should) get the following ScreenBlaster menu: Resolution Vertical Horizontal ---------- -------- ---------- 800 X 288 51.0 Hz 15.9 kHz 800 X 576 unbekannt unbekannt 800 X 576 interlaced 51.0 Hz 15.9 kHz My Princeton synchs correctly about 90% of the time. Other times it rolls and I must reboot. I don't know what "unbekannt" means, but choosing it turns my screen dark black as if it were turned off. I suggest avoiding it. Anybody speak German? Virtual resolutions also work, but unless you have 14 megs it's definitely overkill. As far as switching resolutions, it appears to be hit-or-miss as to what mode you'll end up in. Sometimes I get the VGA resolutions and sometimes the RGB. If you have problems getting into RGB mode, try running ResFooler from the desktop and switching resolutions again. Don't try doing this with a single INF file as it will cause you all sorts of heartache (just trust me on this one). For all I know there's an easier way, but I discovered this on accident and it works for me. Enjoy. ----STEVE---- ------------ Category 14, Topic 41 Message 54 Wed Nov 03, 1993 J.WILSON103 [J_Dub] at 20:48 EST Currently I use an SM 147 mono monitor with my Falcon. The latest (6.2.4) of the ICD PRO utilites WILL format IDE drives. I recently installed it on my Falcon and it works fantastic! Hats off 'again' to those guys at ICD! My understanding, the 6.3.x version that will be released will also support Master and Slave IDE drives as well! From what I understand, there is room within the Falcon to install an additional 2.5" IDE drive, thus Master/Slave drive! If you want the BEST hard drive utilities for your ATARI computer, get ICD's, you will NOT be sorry. Built in disc cacheing, fix for the so called 40 folder bug and all. Interesting note: Just wanted to pass this information out to you all. (It may already be known to majority, but I found out on my own) I had read a message not long ago on here, about the RS-232/Serial problem on the Falcon. Well, it's not really a problem, but an enhancement (in my opinion) The Falcon030's is dual compatable... somewhat. That is, it supports the Mega STE/TT port 2 or has simular qualities. It also has the ST standard... only somewhat, and although I am not a electronic wizzard or techno inclined, it's probley the reason why the Aladdin software does not work on the Falcon. Anyway off to what I had found out. I have Stalker, but I am sure other telecommunication programs which allow you to switch 'ports' will have the same results. (By the way, I'd like to know what other software will allow you to do this) I switched to the Mega STE/TT modem port 2 and saved the configuration, dialed out and it worked fine. I then went back in and reset a few other things to include selecting that the modem sets DCD properly and also selected Drop DTR and it all works fine now! Now for another test... I went ahead and reset all the boards that I call out to to the Baud Rate of 38,400 baud! I called out and low and behold, it worked! I had a connection of 14.4k baud v.32bis/v.42bis DCE speed and a 38.4k baud DTE speed! Never had thought that you would beable to break the 19.2k DTE speed on a stock ST/STE and even the Falcon without a hardware modification. I just recently discovered that I was wrong. I tryed uploading, downloading just to make sure and it works fantastic! I d/led an 147k ASCII file (not compressed) at got over 2600cps rate using Zmodem 32bit CRC! If not anything, I hope this enlightens some of you new falcon owners to some useful information, and not the same boring stuff. :-) Rodney ------------ Category 14, Topic 41 Message 67 Fri Nov 05, 1993 S.WINICK at 03:52 EST Barney, You need ALL the F_ROLL files to have the complete demo. As far as ray- tracing goes, it is the most professional piece of software you can get for the Falcon030 (that isn't commercial; I've heard that InShape is better [see the press releases in the libarary about that]). POV is fantastic. It DOES require a script file (that is, build the scene in ASCII and then feed it to the application) but the language is so accomplished, and so easy to use, that is a minor concern. There is also a utility that allows you to use CyberSculpt to build a scene, save it out, and then convert it to a POV Ray script. It works very well. I've even seen versions of POV that utilize the math-co (if you have one). It is public-domain. It might be in the libraries here. I know for a fact it is on Delphi, in many incarnations. You can also, if you're lucky, order the back issue of ST Format (#49) that comes with the complete POV package. Also, there is an EXCELLENT book by two of the authors of POV called "Ray Tracing Creations" from Waite Group Press. It comes with a disk with the IBM POV Ray on it, but all the files, except for the .EXE files of course, are totally compatible with the 680x0 versions of POV. Then there is QRT, or Quick Ray Tracer. While not as powerful as POV, it works in a similar fashion, and is public domain. This should also be in the library here. Now it remains to be seen what InShape is like. From the specs, it looks like its just as powerful as POV Ray, but with a GUI. For now, however, go with POV. There is even a Falcon030 optimized version but as far as I know, it can only be purchased direct from Floppy Shop in the UK. Hopefully, someone will compile a POV that uses the DSP. THAT would be a dream come true! BTW, I think the FLoppy Shop version actually uses the DSP, so... If you want contact info, let me know, and I can dig it out. Bman ------------ Category 14, Topic 41 Message 102 Thu Nov 11, 1993 T.HEBEL [Spud Boy] at 00:13 EST Well there is a new program on the block called InShape that does exaclty what you are asking about. (Ray-Tracing, Rendering, 3D object creation, Animation). You can download a Demo of it from the ST Rountable. I will warn you that you will need a Math Coprocessor to have the program run though. Considering the power of the program you would probably want one anyway. I have used the Lexicor stuff. It is good. However, as of now Chronos, (The Animator) does not run on the Falcon. Also, none of the animations produced my Chronos will run either, because the player program won't work. Prism paint works as long as you stay away from the True color modes. Phoenix also works, but it will crash while rendering if you try to sneak a peak at the picture you are doing. There was a Demo of Phoenix online if you want to check it out. However, Phoenix does not do raytracing.. All of the Lexicor 3D objects are created in Cybersculpt. Cybersculpt only runs in ST high or ST med. If you are in ST med and try to change the color of an object the program crashes. Keep in mind that there is supposed to be a Phoenix II due out soon. I would take a look at the InShape Press release to see all of its features even if you don't download the program right away. Also there are some sample pics of both programs online. In fact I just uplaoded two from Phoenix a C-5 and a C-172...the C-5 is better though . I think there is still a Lexicor area on GEnie and I know there is an InShape area. CAT 7, Topic 41. Tom, I should be on your mailing list, and would certainly have given your flyer a look if it had come through here. See you in EMAIL. I was in the ICD RT for a while, as well as some others, but was spending too much time reading messages. I just visited and got the latest HOST software last week. Anyone, I mentioned that my Falcon was making scraping noises in the vicinity of the F6 key, and someone thought it might be the hard drive. I now noticed that the HD light is on when the HD is being accessed, but faintly flickers the rest of the time, and _seems_ to be in synch with the noises. Is that unusual? Also, no one commented on how stable the HD is when the Falcon is moved. Should I absolutely avoid moving, bumping, or otherwise disturbing it when running? It is on a pull-out shelf on the computer desk, which sort of locks in place when out, but could be moved. Al, That was pretty cryptic. "Yes." Were you answering me? I don't usually take messages on Tuesday and Thursday, so by Wednesday or Friday I may forget what I wrote on Monday or Wednesday. Ken Van ------------ Category 14, Topic 41 Message 116 Fri Nov 12, 1993 D.FREELAND [SAXMAN] at 08:44 EST Ken, The HD light on my Falcon flickers just like you mentioned but I do not hear any scraping. You might want to call your dealer about that. I had problems with my HD that was related to a shield mounted on the left side of it. Atari told my dealer to remove it, which he did, and the problems went away. I believe Sheldon was saying to move the shield to the other side of the drive. I don't know which is right but my HD has worked perfectly ever since. Before that, it made some very strange noises and was unreliable. I also believe the HD is one that is also used in Notebook computers so I would think you could move the unit to a certain extent. It is an auto-parking drive (at least when of turn off the machine). I know TOS, and the knowledge I have of it at least gives me some peace of mind that DOS wouldn't give me. I realize the TT is much faster, but three things keep me from getting one. 1) They are hard to come by. 2) They cost more than the Falcon030. 3) A graphics card for the TT that would give F030 equivalent graphics costs as much as a F030 does. And, of course, it runs in the background. If you have two or more modem ports, it can even run while you are using another modem, in the background. I emphasize "in the background" because STalker's multitasking, even without Geneva, is one of its best points. I've found it very handy to take Aladdin's new files list, pop it into Oracle, and download new files while I read mail and messages in Aladdin. Steve, STalker runs while Aladdin is running. Not sure what you are referring to, unless you mean they won't share the same serial port (which is true). You need an MSTe or a TT, which have multiple ports. Here goes: With a totally empty system (no DAs, no AUTOs) I open as many windows as I can. Before doing this, however, I observe my free RAM with the Desktop Configuration... somewhere around 3.38 megs free. I then, as I stated before, open the windows. I observe the RAM. It is around 3.26 megs of free RAM. I close all the windows, and observe the RAM. It is somewhere around 3.36 megs free. Not 3.38. I do the same thing over and over, slowly getting rid of all my RAM. Has anyone experienced this? I was using True Paint just now and apparently this little feature is highly detrimental. I loaded a fairly large GIF piccy. Then I observed the RAM. It was a big picture, and I dont recall the specific amount, but when I close the picture, deleted it, the RAM that had been used was not freed up. Eventually, True Paint runs out of memory, bombs, and drops me to the desktop. Something is eating my RAM and I'm rather alarmed. Now, using the desktop to eat my RAM, I can get it all back just by running one of my function key applications (ST-Zip). After quitting that program, all the RAM is back. I don't think True Paint can handle this RAM depletion thing, so it crashes. However, the primary objective is still to be able to use Aladdin on the Falcon's serial port. Assigning the port would be a side benefit. "allow use of MSTe/TT extra ports....lot more interest than just Falcon owners" Guess we'd see about that... MSTe and TT owners who are interested in this project should send me GEMail too. Assuming they read a Falcon topic. ;) The more feedback and potential userbase I hear from, the better! "nominated for Atari Sainthood" Wow, I guess that's a step on the ladder of the proverbial 'programming gods'... Thunderbird, Actually this isn't really a "fix" for Aladdin. There are way too many discussions/debates that occur online when that simple little word is used. ;) Maybe something like 'enhancement' would be a better descriptor... "implementation" Well your idea is a little overboard for this particular case. Using the MMU to intercept MFP access and translate serial functions would be quite a task indeed. The MMU would have to be setup to monitor the hardware area and then a handler written to translate _only_ MFP _serial I/O_ access to SCC compatible access. I can handle MMU programming, it's the SCC that I'd dread... IMO, this may be similar to the reason why making an ACSI to SCSI translator has been on a backburner for the F030. Just one of the drawbacks of direct hardware access. - Keith [TraceTech] ------------ Category 14, Topic 41 Message 155 Mon Nov 15, 1993 J.KRACHT [James Kracht] at 21:00 EST John Towns: Er, well, now that I have a memory leak in my TOS, what, er, should I "patch" it with? ;-) Anyone else care that they might have a memory leak?
