Rehbock match those of the Technics SA-GX530 receiver. People who have heard the Falcon all say how great the sound is--- even out of the internal speaker. Plug it to a great ampli and away you go... Having said that, I did'nt personally heard it. Funny how much was written on a computer we can't see or hear. Let me add to your list of cheap components a cut-down 68030 and a cut-down DSP (no SCI port). I should certainly hope Atari brings their prices down by next month. You wouldn't be able to view the 640x400 true color mode or any of the overscan modes, unless of course you hooked your Falcon030 up to your TV/VCR. C.CASSADAY - I believe you can set the boot resolution in NVRAM on the Falcon030. B.REHBOCK - How does the 32-bit FastRAM board connect to the Falcon030? Does it somehow directly connect to the surface-mounted 68030 or what? So would it make a lot of sense to give the Falcon computers their own category (or categories) in this BB? Everhart -- The cartridge port of the Falcon is the same as that used on the ST line, so the old carts will fit. Whether they will _work_ on the Falcon is another story altogether which only the makers of the carts can answer for you. The Spectre GCR does _not_ work on the Falcon, but I wouldn't discount the possibility of an upgrade or a new product from Gadgets that will. If D2D sticks with the same pricing scheme, and releases an 8 track version of there hardware/software it would be $2400. If hope it will be less than that, though i am only speculating from the $599 price for the 4 track hardware. I want one. That said, I wish all the folks that NEED more speed/colors/rez etc... would get another machine from someone else or wait a bit and get one of the (I'm sure) soon to be released falcon upgrades. Good grief! When the STs came out there was no way to get more speed reliably (there is now), only 512 colors and a max of 640 X 400 res (there is more now), memory limits being too low and a slew of other things that eventually get solved. The ST can go faster it can emulate a Mac, it can do alot more than the designers thought and the software made all this possible. Give the Falcon a break. Give us all a break, and just be patient. The Mac LC II has a similar slot for Apple IIe emulation, graphics cards, etc, and one company has an add-on that lifts the top of the machine up a few inches and provides an extra 40 watt power supply, room and connectors for _3_ cards, and a bay for an additional HD. Something like this would be _killer_ for the Falcon (once you figured out which direction you'd expand to...). You could have that 50MHz accelerator and the Mac emulator, and some super-duper (1024*728*256, for example) graphics card, and another, say 3.5", IDE HD under the hood (or behind it...) Maybe it could be act as a monitor stand that was semi-separate from the Falcon, connected by a thick cable or something... (_OR_ we all could just wait for the MegaFalcon030, etc... NAHH!) At least the Color Classic and LCIII do but I doubt the Centris 040 jobs include a keyboard. The Mac's microphone is a dinky thing but considering the audio circuitry it's hooked up to it doesn't need to be much. The mic is mostly good for recording your own system beeps and voice mail messages and stuff like that... not quality music clips. Don't flame me, people, but the thing to keep in mind here is that for the first time in history, Atari has competition from Apple. It never was a contest before because of the huge price difference, but with the intro of the 16MHz Color Classic (no thanks!) and the 25MHz LCIII (now you're talking!) both priced at around $1349 RETAIL in a 4/40 or 4/80 configuration, then it's only logical to assume some would-be Atari purchasers will be lost to these lower cost Apples simply due to widespread availability and of course, the almighty Apple HYPE (ala HYPErcard) they buy via megabuck advertising. Let's keep our fingers crossed. Regarding monitors... The JVC, Samsung, Goldstar, and Phillips monitors all look great with the Falcon030. I use a JVC everyday to play, er... demo and test Llamazap and Steel Talons. Brad: If your Hard Drive has a ACSI host adapter, it needs to be disconnected and you simply need the appropriate cable to go from your drives to the SCSI II connector on the Falcon. Fact is: The Videohardware of the Falcon is FREELY PROGRAMMABLE. So you can switch to a resolution of 4000x2000 if your monitor would be capable of a 10Hz framerate. The more pixels you see the slower the screen refresh will be. Sounds logical, doesn't it? So at standard the Falcon runs at 25MHz Pixeltakt which is the basis of all calculations. This results in the standard VGA- resolution 640x480 at 31,xx kHz hor. and 60 Hz ver. frequency. So far the standards. Now there is a way to switch the internal pixelclock from 25MHz to approx. 32MHz. This results in higher frequencies if you don't change the resolution. This is exactly what Super78 does. If you don't want to have higher frequencies you can increase the screen resolution. For example 800x600 without external hardware. We have not done that with 256colors yet, but this should be possible too. The cause for this is that we concentrated on the 16color mode. Well we had to start SOMEWHERE! With external hardware we have done 1024x768 at 83Hz interlaced (also 16 colors). Interlaced does not flicker at this screen rate, you can believe that. And you can even increase that if you feel good with 50Hz interlaced (some people may ...). There is too much glare in the FGs to use comfortably for text. My choice of monitors is: the SC1224 and a cheap, flat color VGA for text. That way I cover all the Falcon modes. J.Richter: The IBM win the number war. The Falcon win the usability war. On the IBM, megs of memory are needed for the DOS, Windows, OS/2. Programs are larger. You are limited by DOS. OS/2 takes dozens of megs on your HD, and 8MB RAM to run. Falcon has TOS on ROM. Little memory or HD space needed. Games run off floppy disks. Four megs and 65 MB HD is IDEAL. Add more if you do animations or recordings... To get an IBM to the specification level of Falcon, you need: a 16-bit accelerated video card, SCSI-2 controller card, DSP card, Sound card, LAN card, and three months of configuration. This guide includes a circuit diagram of the stereo microphone Jack and discussion on among other things how to hook "Line" level signals (such as those from a CD player) to the jack. This is also mentioned in the Falcon030 User's Manual. The developer docs include complete descriptions of information necessary to interface to any of the ports. Appendix E of the User's Manual contains pinouts of everyone of the ports on the Falcon. Chester - The Amdek monitor you describe does not cover a low enough horiziontal frequency for the ST video modes. The Falcon VGA ST compatibility modes work so well I have not needed the run the monitor in broadcast video mode. (your requirements may differ) Any good SVGA monitor may be acceptable if this holds true. It's the quickest method but this obviously the quality suffers. *Greyscale* Images are displayed as greyscales. Higher quality display at the expense of speed. *Colour* Images are displayed in colour depending on the hardware available: 4-8 bitplanes (16-256 colours). Images are dithered if the number of colours available is less than the number of colours contained in the image. In 16 colour modes greyscale display is often more suitable. 15/16 bit Highcolor (32768/65536 colours) eg Falcon Truecolor mode 24 or 32 bit Truecolor (16.7 million colours) *Text instead of images* The HTML language provides for text only systems by allowing images to be accompanied by some text which is displayed instead of the image. This enables WWW Browsers which cannot display images to display text output instead. If this option is active (crossed) only images for which no alternative text is available are displayed as images. *Text width:* Text can either be formatted at a fixed width or justified to fit the window width. Text justified to fit the window width looks better but takes longer to display as the text must be reformatted. 8.16 Font selection ------------------- Wherever possible CAB (HTML-Browser) uses different fonts and point sizes to display HTML files. Optimal output quality is provided using vector fonts for which you'll need to install either NVDI v3.x or SpeedoGDOS. Normal bitmap fonts can be used but they're not nearly as nice. Next you need to tell CAB (HTML-Browser) which (GDOS) fonts to use for each corresponding style in an HTML document. Vector fonts as provided by SpeedoGDOS or NVDI 3.x are recommended. You must specify three fonts (sans-serif, serif and monospaced) in four different styles (normal, bold, italic and bold and italic) making twelve selections altogether. The size of the body text can also be altered. Don't make this too large or too small! Somewhere between 10 and 13 point is sensible (I use 12 point). If you haven't got access to vector fonts (i.e. you don't own a copy of NVDI 3.x or SpeedoGDOS) then the point size won't change, but the text can still be viewed using the system font, usually 10 point. 8.17 External viewers --------------------- If a link in an HTML document points to a file which is not in HTML format, an external viewer can be called. These programs can be called in one of two ways and are configurable via the *External programs...* dialog via the *Options* menu. Individual file types can be assigned to different programs. File extensions are entered into the *Files* field. Several extensions can be entered using a comma to separate each entry. Programs are selected by clicking on the selection box to the right of the *Files* field which displays the file selector to select the desired viewer. Finally each entry includes a *Supports VA_START* checkbox which should be crossed if the viewer understands the VA_START message so CAB can send a VA_START message to the viewer so the file can be viewed with re-launching the viewer. The *Default* program (*.*) is called to display any files for which no program has been assigned. If one of more extensions have been defined without a program assigned CAB attempts to display the file. This is only sensible for *.gif, *.xbm, *.htm and ASCII files (for example: *.txt, *.doc, *.c, *.pas, *.tex etc...) for which CAB (HTML-Browser) includes built-in display routines. When any non ASCII format file is encountered CAB displays the file selector using which a copy of the file to be saved to any desired location. The current HTML page can be displayed as source text by selecting an application in the *Source* entry. This application is called via the menu entry *View source...*. If no application has been assigned the *Default* program is called instead. Double clicking on the *program path* boxes opens a further dialog with an option to clear the current path. In the *HTML folder* field set the directory which contains the file DEFAULT.HTM on the CD (eg ?:\HTML\, where ? is replaced with the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive). In the *Database* field set the path to the contents of the CD (?:\UNIX\CT94.DAT (or ?:\UNIX\CT9293.DAT), again ? is the CD-ROM drive letter). If you want to use CAB online to an Internet WWW site you should set the *Cache folder* where all files downloaded from the Internet can be stored. Ideally this folder should be on a Minix hard disk partition, or other file system which supports long filenames to handle HTML files because HTML files downloaded from WWW sites often include long filenames which can easily result in duplication of filenames using the basic TOS 8+3 character file system -and make sure the partition has plenty of room! In *HTML folders* you can enter the paths CAB (HTML-Browser) looks to find HTML files. HTML files contain absolute local paths (eg /path/file.html) which can soon turn the root directory of your partition into choas. The HTML folders help avoid this by telling HTML-Browser to look for HTML files in the folders specified. The *Image cache* is used to avoid repeated unpacking and dithering which both take a great deal of processing time. Images no longer displayed are held in memory (RAM) in case they are needed again. Naturally this takes memory so the maximum size of the cache can be set in the *Maximum size* field. If the cache becomes full the least used image is purged from the cache to free up more space. Using the *Keep free* option it's also possible to set the minimim amount of memory free for other applications. The cache can also be manually purged using the *Free cache* button which can be useful to quickly free up more memory for another application under a multitasking OS. The cache remains empty until further images are displayed in CAB (HTML-Browser). *Attention* The actual memory consumption for the Cache can be higher than entered in the dialog. The *Internet Cache* is used to store files downloaded from the Internet on your disk to avoid repeatedly downloading the same files from the Internet if they're viewed more than once. See also *Paths* The *Maximum size* and *Keep free* options limit the amount of disk space used by the cache and CAB (HTML-Browser) will purge the oldest files from the cache to maintain the cache within the defined limits. If the *Delete after 'quit'* option is active (crossed) the files in the cache will be deleted on exiting CAB (HTML-Browser). Naturally unless disk space is limited or you're sure you'll never need the files again it's best to keep the files. The *Free cache* button is for emergency use in case you need extra disk space fast! The Clipboard, Cut [Control]+X, Copy [Control]+C and Paste [Control]+V commands are supported in all dialog editable fields. The Clipboard commands are also available in document editable fields.
