Last year I read a review in ST-Informer by Donavan Vicha about Towers a game for the Atari ST & STe computers. It was a RPG, (role playing game), that took place in a multi-leveled tower ran by a berserk wizard gone bad. What caught my eye in the review was the graphic display of one of the rooms. It prompted me to pick up the phone and order the game. Although now I realize that it can be d/l (down loaded) from Genie in there Atari ST game files. While ordering I was talking to the co-owner of JV Enterprises, Vince Valenti, about my new, (at the time), Falcon 030 computer and Cubase Steinbergs, 'Cubase Audio' - 16 track, DAT quality (50Khz) recording on to a hard disk. And the fact that I was a singer, song writer, composer. He then told me that they were developing Towers II for the 32bit Falcon. It is a true color, 3-dimensional, free movement textured mapped environment, all of it is mouse driven except for naming game saves-(4)-and some optional short-cut commands. It also features a true 16-bit stereo player for the music and sound effects. He then asked me if I would like to try my hand at writing the music for it. I had always wanted to do something musically in a software format but was more familiar with midi than with trackers&players. But I jumped any way knowing it would be a good 'growing' experience. I used Pro-Tracker for composing the pieces, (intro-inside- end&credit role by.) I had to learn some code to use the Pro Tracker, which was new for me since I consider myself more on the user end then the programming end. But all in all I'm fairly pleased with the fruits of my labor and am looking forward to doing more in the future! If you think that last part of that sentence was a plug for more work... your right! The game is so fluid it is scary! You just push the mouse the way you want to go and click the button when you want to fight or cast spells. No need to read text while roaming and fighting to break into the atmosphere. Hours of abandonment while trying to find that next object or spell or stairway to who knows where. STFormat has given it a 93% rating overall, and Mark Stephen Smith-(net address- msh@dl.ac.uk) of Atari Web Pages WWW gave an overall score of 94% with my endeavor fairing an 88% in thebreakdown. Comments on the game by him are: 1."The graphics and framerate in Towers II are first class." (framerate is at 12 frame a second) 2."On the sound front there is an atmospheric sound track throughout which is fairly pleasing. While you won't find yourself listening to it purposely you also won't want to turn it off as you tend not to notice it when involved in play and it seems to blend into the back of your mind without being obtrusive to the game. The volume can be altered but you'll probably want to keep it on." (I kinda liked the way he portrayed it:)) 3.His final assessment was "Sound and graphics create an excellent set of surroundings and wonderful atmosphere making it the closest you'll ever get on an Atari computer to date to actually being there. At first I had my doubts about it being a free movement textured mapped game as I didn't think the Falcon was up to the job, but this proved me wrong and is a testament to the programming skills of those involved. Likewise the game has been brilliantly devised and the sound and graphics superbly implemented to blend this into what I'd consider the best Falcon game to date." (ditto on that portrayal as well:)) STFormat commented that the games 'engine' gave it an entirely new free moving 3d experience, previously unseen even on the STE and Falcon. WHY? am I telling you this if you haven't got a Falcon. Well because Towers II is being ported over to the Atari Jaguar 64bit game player. It will be available by December '95. See the targa-true color pic's I formatted over to gif's there is a little loss in quality but I still think you'll enjoy them. And just imagine yourself on your 'Jaguar' in a hallway with.... someone beating at the door to your left.......dare you open it?....... P.S. If you haven't a Atari Falcon 030 or an Atari Jaguar 64-bit game player, and don't foresee getting one in the future, check out the original Towers for the Atari ST & STe and for PC users available on down load from Genie or any other good BBS. It's nothing like the 32bit version or the Jaguar version, but still very playable and impressive in its own right, and will whet your appetite for more!!!
