Up to 10 users, all with their OWN passwords can be installed ! A special desk accessory is standard, intercepting any attempts to bypass your hard disk driver with a floppy ! Best of all, the encryption algorithm changes EVERY time you save a password !!! Other USER DEFINABLE password features allow YOU to... o decide whether you wish to LOGON visibly at bootup, invisibly at bootup, or decide AT bootup. o save your password file so that it is either visible FROM or invisible TO the GEM desktop. o decide whether you wish to be prompted for a password at bootup, when you run the configuration part of the program, both or NEITHER. o intercept either cold or warm boots and to decide how much time constitutes a cold boot. o set up intruder alarms which monitor the number of attempts made and set off any one of three possible responses. o limit the access level of additional users. o PLUS MORE !!! A "bootup" configuration section also allows you to choose from up to 30 different desktop configurations at bootup ! Some of the options include... o The choice of which DESKTOP/NEWDESK.INF files, AUTO programs and desk ACCESSORIES to copy, activate or deactivate at bootup. o The ability to always ignore specific files, files you wish to run EVERY time you boot up, ie: FOLDRxxx.PRG or CACHExxx.PRG . o Swapping or copying of desktop setups. o Up to 8 "extra" files PER SETUP to copy at bootup (240 total !). o Optional on screen help, warnings, mouse snapping, reboot options. o Specify leftover, (ie: resolution specific), files to delete at bootup (why have LOWREZ.DAT present when you're in medium resolution). o Each configuration can be executed at bootup simply by selecting the setup and pressing the key ! o View DEGAS or NEOchrome pictures at bootup. o PLUS MORE !!! ...and ALL of this is available from a SINGLE program which goes in your AUTO folder !!! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - DISCLAIMER - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The author cannot be responsible for any damage to your equipment, other software or hardware products or mental or physical well being caused by the use, misuse, abuse or inability to use this program. Registered users can use the conversion programs to update any "pre - 3.0" data files. AUTO FOLDER ----------- o If you do not yet have an AUTO folder you will need to create one in the root directory of your boot disk, ie: C:\AUTO . OCULTAR FOLDER -------------- o Open the AUTO folder and create another folder named OCULTAR, ie: C:\AUTO\OCULTAR . OCULT3_0.PRG LOCATION --------------------- o Place OCULT3_0.PRG in the AUTO folder, ie: C:\AUTO\OCULT3_0.PRG . Try to make it as close to the FIRST program in your AUTO folder as possible - - - - - - - - - - SEE ALSO: Section 2 - - - - - - - - - - OCULTAR FILE LOCATIONS ---------------------- o Place the files OCULTAR.CFG, OCULTAR.DAT, OCULT3_0.RSC, OCULTAR.CUR, OCULTAR.OPC and KILLIT.DAT within the OCULTAR folder, ie: C:\AUTO\OCULTAR\OCULTAR .CFG <- desktop setups. OCULTAR .DAT <- password file. OCULT3_0.RSC <- configuration resource. OCULTAR .CUR <- custom mouse cursor. OCULTAR .OPC <- picture file configurations. KILLIT .DAT <- files to delete at bootup. The latter 3 files are only necessary if you intend to use those features. NOTE: KILLIT.PRG will not look in the OCULTAR folder for KILLIT.DAT. If you'd rather use KILLIT.PRG you should place KILLIT.DAT in the appropriate directory. You may also place ANY other files you wish copied at bootup within the OCULTAR folder, ie: DESKTOP.INF files, FONT files, GDOS files, etc... although you MAY keep all of them TOGETHER anywhere else, ie: C:\AUTO\OCULTSTF\*.* . - - - - - - - - - - - SEE ALSO: APPENDIX h - - - - - - - - - - - OCULTACC.ACC ------------ o Place OCULTACC.ACC in the root directory of your boot disk, ie: C:\OCULTACC.ACC . THERE YOU GO ! -------------- o Ocultar is now ready to go ! WHEN OCULTAR RUNS ----------------- Ocultar will work in ALL ST/TT resolutions with one exception. The configuration part of the program will only work in ST/TT medium and high resolution. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SEE ALSO: PATCH PROGRAMS and APPENDIX i - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 2) OCULT3_0.PRG ------------ This program is the heart of Ocultar. It determines whether or not it is running during a bootup or from the desktop, and presents you with the appropriate options. This ability makes it possible to limit all of Ocultars functions to a single program ! TROUBLE-SHOOTING ---------------- IF FOR SOME REASON YOUR MACHINE DOESN'T RESPOND TO OCULTARS REQUEST AS TO WHETHER IT IS RUNNING AT BOOTUP OR FROM THE GEM DESKTOP, DO THE FOLLOWING. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - * Rename OCULT3_0.PRG as OCULTARB.PRG , and leave it in your AUTO folder. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - * Place a copy of OCULT3_0.PRG on a _SEPERATE_ drive\partition, along with it's associated files. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - * Run OCULT3_0.PRG to configure Ocultar. Do not attempt to run OCULTARB.PRG from the desktop, as it will always assume it is running at bootup. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - PROGRAMS WHICH SHOULD RUN BEFORE OCULTAR ---------------------------------------- HARD DISK DRIVERS ----------------- There ARE some programs which MAY need to be run before OCULT3_0.PRG ie: AHDI.PRG (the hard disk driver). These are generally programs which tell your computer about the setup you are using and are considered system files. These programs should be run BEFORE OCULT3_0.PRG to ensure that your computer is set up to receive information properly. PATCH PROGRAMS -------------- Other programs which MAY need to be run before Ocultar are what are commonly referred to as "patch" programs. These are generally fixes for bugs which have crawled into your operating system. Examples include... FOLDRxxx.PRG <- alleviates the 40 folder bug found in machines with a version of TOS older than 1.4 . STE_FIX.PRG <- allows STes to boot up in medium resolution. POOLFIXx.PRG <- patches GEMDOS "malloc" bug found in TOS 1.4, 1.6 (and possibly TOS 1.62). ????????.PRG <- I don't know the name, but there IS a patch program for TTs which restores the "Line A Variables" which were inadvertently left out of some of the Atari TTs. If you have a TT and Ocultars displays are disjointed, use this program. - - - - - - - - - - - SEE ALSO: APPENDIX i - - - - - - - - - - - If it is NOT necessary for you to use any of these "system" files then you should make OCULT3_0.PRG the VERY FIRST program in your AUTO folder. AUTOBOOTING OCULT3_0.PRG ------------------------ OCULT3_0.PRG is completely independent and does NOT require any auto- booting help. To ensure that OCULT3_0.PRG is the VERY first file in your AUTO folder you can do the following. RE-ORDERING YOUR AUTO FOLDER ---------------------------- First, copy EVERYTHING out of your AUTO folder to a safe place. Next, erase everything from your AUTO folder, MAKING SURE that you have backup copies of EVERYTHING on the same disk as your AUTO folder. This will protect you from accidentally erasing a valuable file. Lastly, copy OCULT3_0.PRG into your empty AUTO folder, followed by the rest of your AUTO programs. If you are using NeoDesk, you can, of course, use the built in re-ordering option. EXAMPLE ------- A typical setup might look like one of these... A:\AUTO\ C:\SHDRIVER.SYS \AHDI.PRG C:\AUTO\ \OCULT3_0.PRG \FOLDER.PRG \MOUSE.PRG \OCULT3_0.PRG \SELECTOR.PRG \MOUSE.PRG A:\OCULTACC.ACC C:\OCULTACC.ACC A:\CONTROL.ACC C:\CONTROL.ACC A:\DESKTOP.INF C:\DESKTOP.INF WHEN OCULT3_0.PRG SHOULD BE RUN ------------------------------- Although this may seem obvious, OCULT3_0.PRG should run BEFORE any programs you wish it to alter. OCULT3_0.PRG should always be named OCULT3_0.PRG if you wish for it to ignore itself at bootup. 3) OCULTACC.ACC ------------ The password for the accessory is Password . You can change this later. PURPOSE ------- OCULTACC.ACC is designed to intercept any attempts at bypassing the hard disk AUTO folder through the use of a floppy disk with an AUTO folder containing a hard disk driver. This feature should be considered carefully before using. HOW TO BYPASS OCULT3_0.PRG -------------------------- As you may or may not know, it IS possible to bypass the hard disk driver and AUTO folder using a special floppy. The floppy disk would contain an AUTO folder with a hard disk driver inside of it, ie: AHDI.PRG. If you place this floppy disk in drive A and hold down the ALTERNATE key when the drive light comes on, your computer will bypass the hard-disk AUTO folder and hard disk driver. If you are using Supra's software, you will need to hold down the CONTROL, SHIFT and ALTERNATE keys to bypass the hard drive. HOW OCULTAR PREVENTS THIS ------------------------- The catch which OCULTACC.ACC takes advantage of is that the hard disk driver program in drive A generally loads ALL active accessories on drive C before going to the desktop. NOTE: If you bypass the hard disk with the ALT key and don't have a hard disk driver program on drive A, you will NOT (in most cases) have access to your hard disk. AUTOMATIC DISABLING OF OCULTACC.ACC ----------------------------------- When\if OCULT3_0.PRG finds OCULTACC.ACC, it renames it OCULTACC.PRG. This prevents OCULTACC from intercepting the accessory load. At the end of your session, either rename OCULTACC.PRG as OCULTACC.ACC, or _RUN_ OCULTACC.PRG and it will rename itself. IF OCULT3_0.PRG IS BYPASSED --------------------------- If OCULT3_0.PRG is bypassed by a floppy disk, it cannot rename OCULTACC.ACC. OCULTACC.ACC will intercept the floppy disk bypass with a LOGON prompt. It will not allow you to proceed until you enter the correct password. You will have a couple of chances to enter the password before OCULTACC.ACC completely locks you out. You will then need to reboot to continue. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = IMPORTANT--IMPORTANT--IMPORTANT--IMPORTANT--IMPORTANT--IMPORTANT--IMPORTANT THERE IS NO WAY TO OVERRIDE OCULTACC.ACC IF YOU FORGET YOUR ACCESSORY PASSWORD AND BYPASS OCULT3_0.PRG !!! YOU MAY THEREFORE WISH TO RENAME OCULTACC.ACC AS SOMETHING ELSE AND SET UP ALL BUT ONE OF YOUR "DESKTOP SETUPS" TO ENABLE IT. THE EXTRA "ONE" CAN BE SET UP TO DISABLE IT AFTER YOU HAVE ENTERED YOUR PASSWORD. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = TESTING OUT OCULTACC.ACC ------------------------ If you wish to test out OCULTACC.ACC, but are worried about being locked out of your hard disk, do the following... o Set up Ocultar as described below with the exception of OCULTACC.ACC. Try out the autobooting feature to make sure you have it working properly. o Rename OCULTACC.ACC as OCULTAR.ACC. Create a setup key which enables OCULTAR.ACC and one that disables OCULTAR.ACC o Reboot your computer and choose the setup key which enables OCULTAR.ACC. When the prompt appears, enter the password Password . o If you can't get past the accessory prompt, reboot your computer, and select the setup key which disables OCULTAR.ACC. INSTALLING OCULTACC.ACC ----------------------- To install OCULTACC.ACC simply copy it to the same directory from which your other accessories are loaded. The closer it is to being the first ACCessory to load the better the protection. EXAMPLE ------- A:\AUTO\ C:\SHDRIVER.SYS \OCULT3_0.PRG C:\AUTO\ A:\OCULTACC.ACC \OCULT3_0.PRG A:\CONTROL.ACC C:\OCULTACC.ACC STUFFERS -------- DO NOT place OCULTACC.ACC inside of any "accessory stuffers" as this will make it too easy to bypass. TECHNICAL NOTE -------------- Since I do not have access to all the hard disk software programs available, there is a chance that OCULTACC.ACC may not function as described. If you find that this is the case and would still like to use it, please send me as much information about the way your hard disk and its software operates. I will make every attempt to rewrite OCULTACC.ACC so that it works with your setup. Generally, if your hard disk bypass scans drive C, OCULTACC.ACC will be activated. 4) RUNNING OCULTAR FROM THE DESKTOP --------------------------------- Double-click on OCULT3_0.PRG from the desktop to load the configuration part of the program. Ocultar MUST be able to find it's password file in order for you to access the configuration program, This prevents unscrupulous people from trying to bypass it. OCULTAR ACCESS OPTIONS ---------------------- Ocultar is initially set up to intercept both the program and bootup with a password prompt. ENTERING A PASSWORD ------------------- o When the "Password" panel appears, enter the word Password on the top line and hit the key (or click on the "Access" button). You now have access to Ocultar. CREATING A PASSWORD ------------------- o Select button number 1. Enter a new password on the top line and click on the "INSTALL" button. Your new password is now installed. o Click on the "PASSWORD" button and then on the "SAVE" button. When the fileselector appears, locate (select) OCULTAR.DAT and save your password file. PASSWORD BOX ------------ Below the "selected" password box are the following options. ALL options can be selected, or scrolled, by clicking on either the left or right arrow on either side of the box. * LOGON: Here you may select either "ASK", "VISIBLE" or "INVISIBLE". o ASK prompts you at bootup as to whether you wish to LOGON visibly or invisibly. o VISIBLE automatically enables a VISIBLE logon at bootup. o INVISIBLE automatically enables an invisible logon at bootup. * FILE: Here you select the flag status of OCULTAR.DAT. o VISIBLE allows OCULTAR.DAT to be seen from the GEM desktop. o INVISIBLE hides the file OCULTAR.DAT from GEM. * WHEN: Here you determine when a password prompt appears. o BOOTUP enables a password at bootup ONLY. o PROGRAM enables a password for the configuration program ONLY. o BOTH enables a password for both bootup and the program. o NEITHER disables the password prompt completely. TIMER BOX --------- Below the TIMER box are the following options. * TYPE: Here you decide what type of boot to intercept. o COLD enables passwords for cold boots only. This is when you first turn on your machine. o WARM enables passwords for ALL boots and reboots. * MINUTES: Here you determine how many minutes determine a COLD boot. Ocultar automatically sets a cold boot as a boot/reboot no longer than 1 minute. If your system takes longer than 1 minute to initialize you may increase the cold boot timer on this panel. INTRUDER OPTIONS ---------------- Below this box are the following options which can be initiated if an unauthorized user is trying to gain access to your system. * TYPE: Here you decide what type of action to take if an intruder is detected. o OFF turns this option off completely. o AUDIO/VISUAL flashes the screen and makes unholy noises. o LOCK UP blanks the screen and locks up your system. o REBOOT performs a warm reboot of your system. The only way out of the first two alarms is to reboot your system. * ATTEMPTS: Here you determine how many logon attempts will be allowed before an intruder option is initiated. ACCESSORY --------- Select the "accessory" button. Enter a password on the top line and click on the "SAVE" button. A fileselector will appear allowing you to locate OCULTACC.ACC/PRG. Once located, the password on the top line will be written to OCULTACC.ACC/PRG. PROGRAM ------- Select the "program" button. Enter a password on the top line and click on the "SAVE" button. A fileselector will appear allowing you to locate OCULT3_0.PRG. Once located, click on OKAY in the fileselector. The password on the top line will be written to OCULT3_0.PRG. The password which is written directly into the program can be considered your "backdoor" password. It will always be accepted. It does NOT negate any passwords in OCULTAR.DAT. It simply affords an extra level of protection, as well as assuring that a password is still present, even if the password file has been damaged or deleted. If OCULTAR.DAT cannot be found or read, Ocultar will intercept ALL boots and will only allow access if your backdoor password has been entered. LIMIT ----- When selected, the user whose password is being saved to OCULTAR.DAT will have limited access to Ocultar. They will ONLY be allowed to run Ocultar and change THEIR password. That's it. No other settings on the panel will be registered. HELP ---- When selected, all features are replaced with alerts explaining the feature you select. ACCESS ------ Compares the password on the top line against the password file. USER 1 can also hold down the key while selecting this button (after they have gained access) to get a list of ALL user passwords. INSTALL ------- Installs the password on the top line as the password for the selected button (1-10). REMOVE ------ Removes the user password assigned to the selected button, ONLY USER 1 can remove extra users. To do this, access the system. Select the user (button) to remove and click on REMOVE. Be certain to re-save the password file. Do not remove yourself :-) SAVE ---- Saves the accessory password, the password file or the program backdoor. EXIT ---- Exits the password screen. If you have LIMITED access, the program will end. If you have TOTAL access, you will be returned to the Ocultar Master Shell. 1 - 10 ------ Each user's password is assigned to a number button. If you are user number one, you will need to select button number 1 before entering your password. User number 2 will need to select button number 2 before entering their password, and so on... INSTALLING EXTRA USERS ---------------------- * ONLY User 1 can do this... o Access the System using your access code. o Click on button 2 and enter a new password. o Select LIMIT (or not, depending on how well you like the user ;-). Be certain your other preferences are set accordingly (cold\warm etc..). o Click on the SAVE button. NOTE: User 2 can access the system later and change their password AFTER they have been installed by User #1. Follow this procedure for users 2-10. 5) OCULTAR MASTER SHELL -------------------- If you are user #1 or are not a LIMITED user, you will be taken from the Access screen to the Master Shell screen (assuming you have correctly accessed the program with the proper password). This is the screen from which you will access the many features of Ocultar. If you configure Ocultar to NOT ask for a password for the program, this screen will appear when you run Ocultar from the desktop. To access a feature you need merely click on the desired button. o PASSWORDS takes you to the previously described screen. o COPYRIGHT displays the current copyright information. o MENU BAR allows access to the GEM "Desk" menu. o AUTOBOOTING takes you to the desktop setup configurations screen. o VISION takes you to the bootup picture screen options. o EXIT quits the program. 6) OCULTAR BOOTUP CONFIGURATIONS ----------------------------- Click on the AUTOBOOTING button to access this section of Ocultar. This part of the program allows you to configure up to 30 different desktop setups which can then be selected at bootup. This feature can also be disabled if you are already using another "boot configuration" program. SELECTING A SETUP KEY --------------------- On the top of the screen are the buttons NORMAL, CONTROL and SHIFT. Below this are buttons representing function keys F1 - F10. These are the buttons to which your setups will be assigned. Selecting NORMAL-F1 assigns all values to function key #1. CONTROL-F1 means you must hold down the CONTROL key at bootup, while pressing function key #1 to access THOSE settings. SAMPLE SESSION -------------- o Select the "NORMAL" button and the "F1" button. o Enter a NAME for this setup on the top right line and press the key (or click on the OKAY button). The name of this setup will then appear in the center box. IGNORE/DELETE FILES - DESKTOP.INF PATH -------------------------------------- o Click in the box to the left of the line "DESKTOP.INF PATH, IGNORE, DELETE FILES". IGNORE FILES ------------ o On the left is a selector for files you wish ignored at bootup. These are files you wish run EVERY time you use your system. Files such as CACHExxx.PRG or FOLDRxxx.PRG are examples. Files listed in this panel will NEVER be touched by Ocultar. SELECTING FILES TO IGNORE ------------------------- o Clicking on a blank line in the IGNORE panel calls up a fileselector which allows you to select a file to add to the list. You should start with the first line since Ocultar numbers these files by the last entry. In Other Words (IOW), if the first 3 lines are blank and the fourth contains a filename, Ocultar will assume you have 4 files to ignore. It won't hurt anything, but Ocultar will run slower since you are telling it to watch for files which don't exist. The blank entries will only be trimmed when you save an OCULTAR.CFG file. NOTE: If you are using StartGem or HeadStart for autobooting, you MAY wish to list them here, although it is probably best to include them within the PROGRAM selector (so that you may disable them if a problem arises). REMOVING NAMES FROM THE IGNORE LIST ----------------------------------- o To remove a file from this list, click on the filename. When the fileselector appears, clear the filename entry and click on OKAY in the fileselector. This tells Ocultar that you don't wish ANY file there. FILENAME DISPLAYS ----------------- o Programs and Accessories listed in this selector WILL NOT appear anywhere else in the program (ie: under auto programs or accessories). Ocultar will NOT touch these files at bootup. o If you add or delete a filename, you will need to rescan the appropriate directory if you wish that file listed again. Ignored files are processed after you select AUTOBOOTING from the Master Shell. So, if you remove a PRoGram from the list you will need to re-scan the program directory in order for Ocultar to realize that THAT file is once again active. You don't need to do this immediately, but should do it once your ignore list is complete. DELETING FILES AT BOOTUP ------------------------ o You can repeat this procedure for selecting files to DELETE at bootup. These files MUST be saved to the file KILLIT.DAT. They will NOT be saved to OCULTAR.CFG. This allows you to configure KILLIT.DAT in a manner which is consistent with KILLIT.PRG . You can therefore configure Ocultar for passwords only and use KILLIT.PRG for deleting files. THE PURPOSE OF DELETING FILES ----------------------------- * Why DELETE files at bootup..? Some programs, such as CodeHead Software's WARP 9 V3.75 look for a filename which is resolution specific. For example, in ST low resolution, WARP 9 looks for the file WARP9_0.CNF. In ST medium resolution it looks for WARP9_1.CNF. Say you were just in ST low resolution and rebooted to ST medium resolution. The file WARP9_0.CNF would still be in the directory, even though it was serving no useful purpose. This feature allows you to delete the files you no longer need. The appropriate file can then be copied from the Ocultar EXTRAS page at bootup. This leaves you with only the file you NEED for that resolution. Let me just mention that I've been using Warp 9 for some time now and can't imagine life without it. I highly recommend it ! ALL 3 of _my_ WARP9_x.CNF files, however, have the EXACT same settings. SO, instead of having 3 files I don't NEED, I have just one, which I copy and rename at bootup (deleting the old copy first). I opted for the DELETE and COPY feature instead of just a "rename" option since the former allows diversely configured files to be copied. WHEN TO DELETE FILES -------------------- o To the right of the DELETE panel are your DELETE "when" options. o Select NEVER if you wish Ocultar to ignore the file KILLIT.DAT. o Select AFTER PASSWORD if you wish these files to be deleted by Ocultar ONLY AFTER a valid password has been entered. o Select ONLY AFTER A DESKTOP SETUP HAS BEEN CHOSEN to delete these files only if you're configuring a new setup at boot time. o This option is the ONLY "delete option" which will be saved to OCULTAR.CFG. It WILL NOT be saved to KILLIT.DAT. If you change this option you will NEED to save it to OCULTAR.CFG. SAVING/LOADING KILLIT.DAT ------------------------- o Click on the SAVE button to SAVE these filenames to the file KILLIT.DAT. Ocultar looks in the current directory, the root directory, the AUTO folder and the OCULTAR folder for this file. If it doesn't find it it just continues. NOTE that KILLIT.PRG will NOT look in the OCULTAR folder for KILLIT.DAT o Ocultar will also display file operations as they are taking place at bootup if you specify YES in the "Display Files" option within KILLIT.DAT. o Click on the LOAD button to LOAD a KILLIT.DAT file. VIEWING FULL FILENAMES ---------------------- * With both of THESE selectors, holding down the key while selecting a name will allow the full path and name of the file to be printed to the top of the screen. DESKTOP.INF ----------- o Click on the DESKTOP.INF line at the bottom of the panel to call up a fileselector. Specify the EXACT destination and name of your desktop information file (or enter it manually) and click on OKAY in the fileselector. The path and name will then appear at the bottom of this panel. If you are using a hard disk the line would probably read... C:\DESKTOP.INF or C:\NEWDESK.INF Floppy users would specify drive A instead of C . - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - o BE SURE TO SAVE KILLIT.DAT BEFORE EXITING THE AUTOBOOTING SECTION. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - EXITING THE PANEL ----------------- o Click on OKAY to exit and save your settings to memory. o Click on CANCEL to exit and restore your initial setup. o Click on ERASE to clear ALL settings made to this page. DESKTOP.INF / AUTO PROGRAMS / DESK ACCESSORIES ---------------------------------------------- o Click in the box to the left of the line "DESKTOP.INF, AUTO PROGRAMS, ACCESSORIES". A second panel will appear. DESKTOP.INF FILE PATHS ---------------------- o Click on the letters "INF" on the top of the lefthand selector box. A fileselector will appear. Select the path (ONLY) in which your DESKTOP.INF files are contained. Click on OKAY in the fileselector. Ocultar will then scan that directory for any files ending in IN? ( ? being ANY character). Example: C:\AUTO\OCULTAR\ PROGRAM / ACCESSORY PATHS ------------------------- o Repeat this procedure for locating your AUTO programs and desk ACCESSORIES. SELECTING A DESKTOP.INF FILE ---------------------------- o Click on a DESKTOP.INF file in the selector to select a file. The full name of the file will appear below the selector. Only 1 .INF file may be selected per setup. If the list exceeds the display you may use the up and down arrows at the top of the box to scroll through the list. SELECTING PROGRAMS / ACCESSORIES ------------------------------- o Select your AUTO programs and desk ACCESSORIES in the same way. These files will remain selected to indicate your choice. EXITING THIS PANEL ------------------ o Click on OKAY to assign your selections to the current function key. o Click on CANCEL to abort any changes you have made since entering this screen. o Click on ERASE to clear ALL settings made on this screen. EXTRAS ------ o Click on the box to the left of the word EXTRAS on the main panel to call up another panel. This page allows you to select up to 8 extra files per key to copy at bootup (240 total). NAME LINE --------- o On the NAME line you may enter an identifying name for the file being copied. This can be anything like Carl's NeoDesk Font or Heidi's Warp 9 fill pattern. SOURCE ------ o This is the source file you wish copied at bootup. Click on this line to call up a fileselector for selecting the source file. You may also enter this name manually. DESTINATION ----------- o This is the place to which you wish your source file copied at bootup. Click on this line to call up the fileselector or enter the name manually. BE CERTAIN that the destination file has the correct NAME you desire ! EXAMPLE ------- Name: Carl's NeoDesk Font Source: C:\AUTO\OCULTAR\ALL_REZ.FNT Dest: C:\NEODESK3\NEODESK.FNT REMAINING LINES --------------- o Repeat this procedure for the remaining lines. You will need to click on the NEXT button to access the remaining 4 files. NEXT ---- o Select this button to access the second "extras" page. The button will change to "PREV"ious to indicate that you are on the second page. EXITING THIS PANEL ------------------ o Click on OKAY to assign your selections to the current function key. o Click on CANCEL to abort any changes you have made since entering this screen. o Click on ERASE to clear ALL settings made on this screen. SAVING AN OCULTAR.CFG FILE -------------------------- o Once you have returned to the main autobooting panel, click on the SAVE button. o A fileselector will appear allowing you to specify a directory for, and save, your configuration file (OCULTAR.CFG). EDITING FUNCTION KEYS --------------------- o Select the box to the left of the line "EDIT FUNCTION KEYS" to call up an editing page. DISPLAY ------- o The screen display consists of two panels which are identical to the main configuration panel. SELECTING A SETUP KEY --------------------- o Select a "function key" setup from each panel in the same way you select a setup from the main panel. COPY ---- o Select COPY to copy ALL of the settings from the setup key selected in the TOP panel to the setup key selected in the BOTTOM panel. Any settings previously made in the bottom setup key will be COMPLETELY replaced with the new settings. SWAP ---- o Select SWAP to replace the settings of the TOP setup key with the settings of the BOTTOM setup key (and vice versa). EXIT ---- o Select EXIT to return to the main autobooting screen. OTHER BUTTONS ------------- ERASE ----- o Erases ALL settings under the specified setup key. EXIT ---- o Returns you to the Ocultar Master Shell. HELP ---- o Replaces the functions of the panel with alerts describing the function. WARNINGS -------- o Enables alerts which warn you of a potentially destructive procedure. REBOOT ------ o Allows you to perform a software reboot of your computer (or abort). AUTOBOOT SCREEN --------------- o The autobooting screen will NOT appear at bootup unless this item is checked. 7) OCULTAR VISION -------------- This option allows you to select a picture, or pictures, to view at bootup. - - - - - - - - - - - SEE ALSO: APPENDIX i - - - - - - - - - - - SETTING UP ---------- o You will first need to create a folder for colour pictures (if you're using a colour monitor) and/or a folder for monochrome pictures (if you're using a monochrome monitor), or both. The name of the folder should reflect the contents, ie: MONOPICS . o Place all of your colour pictures in the colour folder and mono pictures in the mono folder. - - - - - - - - - - - - - SEE ALSO: PICTURE FORMATS - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - NOTE: PLEASE DO NOT place colour pictures in the monochrome folder or monochrome pictures in the colour folder. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - PICTURE FORMATS --------------- Ocultar currently supports the following file types, formats and resolutions in which a picture is viewable. FORMAT EXTENDERS RESOLUTION ------ --------- ---------- DEGAS: .PI1, .PI2 ST Low and Medium .PI3 ST High NEOCHROME: .NEO ST Low,Medium and High Since NeoChrome uses the same file extender, you may wish to use Ocultar or another picture viewing utility to determine a .NEO files correct resolution. OCULTAR AUTO SELECTIONS ----------------------- If you boot up in colour, Ocultar will look in your "colour" folder for either your SINGLE colour picture (if using the "single" option) or for files ending in .PI1, .PI2 or .NEO (if using the "next" selection option). If you boot up in mono, Ocultar will look in your "mono" folder for either your SINGLE mono picture (if using the "single" option) or for files ending in .PI3 or .NEO (if using the "next" selection option). Ocultar will also, if using the "next" option, examine the contents of the file to see if it is the correct format for the current resolution. No picture will be shown if it is not. IOW: It won't show a low resolution picture in high resolution. If you inadvertently rename a DEGAS picture (.PI2) as a DEGAS ELITE picture (.PC2), that is, rename the .PC2 as .PI2, Ocultar will not be able to properly display it. You will either see a smear screen, or the proper error message will appear (depending on the file type). COLOUR ------ Click on this line to call up a fileselector for selecting a colour picture, or colour picture path. Ocultar will ignore this line if it is empty. The line should read something similar to one of these... D:\COLORPIC\*.* E:\COLORPIC\OCULTAR.PI2 SINGLE PICTURE -------------- If you only wish to display a SINGLE picture every time you boot up, enter (or select) the specific file path and name. ie: C:\COLORPIC\OCULTAR.PI2 Ocultar will then only show this one picture at bootup. CONSECUTIVE PICTURES -------------------- If you wish for Ocultar to display a different picture every time you boot up, enter just the path on this line. ie: C:\COLORPIC\*.* Ocultar will then scan the COLORPIC folder and display the next picture in the folder every time you boot up. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - IMPORTANT: With both of these options, the appropriate "SHOW PICTURE" option MUST be selected. (see below). - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - MONO ---- Repeat the procedure described under "COLOUR" for setting up your mono picture line. Ocultar will ignore the mono line if it is empty. PICTURE FORMAT -------------- o Select either the left or right arrow to select a picture format to view. o Click on the SELECT button to call up a fileselector from which you will select a picture file to view (from within the configuration program). You will be returned to the "VISION" panel if the file cannot be viewed. This can be helpful in determining if a file is the correct format for the current resolution. o If the file IS viewable, it will be displayed. You may exit the picture by pressing any key. The picture will also end by itself after the amount of seconds specified under "SECONDS" has elapsed. o While viewing the picture, you may recall its name by pressing a mouse button. The name of the file will appear at the top of the screen. DISPLAY ___ PASSWORD -------------------- Click on the arrows to the left and right to scroll through the options. BEFORE ------ o Select "Display BEFORE password" to have the picture displayed before the password prompt. If you have the password option disabled, the screen, at bootup, may clear for a few seconds after the picture option ends while the program checks your password file, finds it disabled and checks your .CFG file for options, before either presenting you with a configuration screen or continuing. The picture WILL NOT be bypassed (if you select the hot-key bypass option) if it is set to display BEFORE the password. Placing the bypass after the password keeps unauthorized users out of your system. AFTER ----- o Select "Display AFTER password" to have the picture displayed only if a valid password has been entered. The picture WILL be bypassed by a "hot-key" if the "hot-key" option is selected. It WILL be displayed if a password hasn't been entered IF the password option is disabled (or timed-out). ON ___ BOOTS ------------ Clicking on these arrows sets what type of boot initiates the picture viewing option. COLD ---- o Select "On COLD boots." to have the picture displayed ONLY when a cold boot is detected. WARM ---- o Select "On WARM boots." to have a picture displayed EVERY time you boot or reboot your computer. SHOW ___ PICTURE ---------------- Click on these arrows to select the picture selection method. SINGLE ------ o Select "Show SINGLE picture" to have Ocultar display ONLY the picture whose name appears on the COLOUR or MONO line. ie: C:\COLORPIC\OCULTAR.PI1 D:\MONOPICS\PROFILE.PI3 If you do NOT select a SPECIFIC file name on the COLOUR or MONO line and select "SINGLE", NO picture will be displayed at bootup. NEXT ---- o Select "Show NEXT picture" to have Ocultar display the NEXT picture for the current resolution every time you boot up. In order for this option to work, your disk drive must NOT be write protected. Ocultar needs to write the number of the picture to one of its files so that it does not display the same picture the next time. You MUST also be CERTAIN that ONLY a PATH has been specified on the appropriate line. ie: E:\COLORPIC\*.* Q:\MONOPIC\*.* NO -- o Select "Show NO picture" to disable bootup pictures completely. FOR ___ SECONDS --------------- o Click on the arrows to the left and right of this option to determine the amount of time the picture will be displayed. You can test the timer by setting a number and then choosing the "SELECT" option (and viewing a picture from the program). ALL pictures can be ended prematurely at bootup by pressing any key. Try not to hit the key or the key as this may cause the setup screen to exit without a selection. SAVE / OCULTAR.OPC ------------------ o Click on the "SAVE" button to save your "Vision" options to the file OCULTAR.OPC . This file must ALSO be kept with all other Ocultar related files, ie: C:\AUTO\OCULTAR\OCULTAR.OPC . Since this file must be "read and written to", it was determined to be more efficient to create a seperate, smaller file (which can be accessed more quickly). If Ocultar doesn't find this file, it assumes you don't want this option and continues without it. 8) BOOTING UP ---------- Once everything has been set up, reboot your computer. - - - - - - - - - - - SEE ALSO: APPENDIX i - - - - - - - - - - - PASSWORD -------- If Ocultar finds its password file, it will present you with the main LOGON screen (depending on whether or not you chose the password option). If Ocultar can't find its password file it will use your backdoor password. The prompt will intercept ALL boots and you will be given 4 attempts before Ocultar initiates a "lock out". This, of course, only works if you've saved a "backdoor" password. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - * If you configure Ocultar to "ASK" at bootup, enter V to logon Visibly or I to logon invisibly. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - * Enter your password. If the password is correct you will be allowed to proceed. The number of attempts you are given depends on how you set up the Intruder alert system. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - AUTOBOOTING SCREEN ------------------ If the Autobooting option is enabled, an autobooting screen will appear. (assuming Ocultar finds OCULTAR.CFG) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - * Additional "on screen" HELP is now available at bootup ! To obtain a list of these options, merely press the HELP key at bootup BEFORE selecting a function key. It is for this reason that the "bootup" commands will not be listed here. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Ocultar disables programs and accessories by changing the last letter in their name to X instead of G or C . It reverses this process to re-enable them. If you have a version of TOS older than 1.4 you will need to obtain a copy of StartGem or HeadStart if you wish to have a program run automatically after bootup. OCULTACC.PRG ------------ You will need to rename OCULTACC.PRG as described earlier, if you are using it. Ocultar automatically disables it when it receives the correct password. BYPASSING OCULTAR ----------------- If you hold down the SHIFT, CONTROL or ALT key _BEFORE_ Ocultar reaches it's "Desktop Setups" screen, that screen will be automatically bypassed. APPENDIX -------- a) BACKDOOR PASSWORDS ------------------ A backdoor password is a password which is ALWAYS accepted by the program, no matter what your current password is. It does not nullify the password you have created. The password you create with Ocultar is JUST AS VALID as the backdoor. The Backdoor password is written directly into the code of the program. The Backdoor Password lets you bypass the current password in the event you have forgotten the password or someone has changed it on you. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = The backdoor for unregistered copies of Ocultar is Carl . MASTER DISK copies will have this backdoor removed. This backdoor will ALWAYS work on unregistered copies of Ocultar. If you forget your password, enter Carl . = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = b) UNCLE-MOUSE SUPPORT ------------------- Ocultar also supports the UncleMouse CURsor file format. This means that you can create your OWN custom mice cursors for use within Ocultar ! The file MUST be named OCULTAR.CUR and must be placed either in the same directory as OCULT3_0.PRG, the AUTO folder, the AUTO\OCULTAR\ folder or the root directory of the disk/drive containing OCULT3_0.PRG. As the configuration part (only) of Ocultar is loading from the desktop, it looks for OCULTAR.CUR. If this file is found, Ocultar loads YOUR custom mouse cursor. If it can't find it, it uses it's own custom cursor. The CURsor supplied is of the standard GEM arrow. Since the mouse cursor is a standard GEM object, it WILL NOT appear at bootup, since GEM has not yet initialized itself. Custom mice can be created using the SHAREWARE program UncleMouse, Version 1.0a or newer (available most everywhere). MOUSE SNAPPING -------------- On a similar subject, Ocultar has a built in "mouse memorization" feature which will be referred to here as "mouse snapping". TURNING IT ON or OFF -------------------- This feature can be turned ON and OFF by merely holding down the key and selecting one of the buttons below any of the configuration panels (or any of the "shell" buttons). o For example, HOLD DOWN the key and click on the "copyright" button. An alert box will appear allowing you to make your choice. This feature is intended to alleviate some of the redundant mouse movements associated with GEM programs in general. In general (not always), when a mouse click on a button calls another panel or fileselector, the position of the mouse when it called the function is memorized. When the function has ended, the mouse cursor is returned to the position of the button which called the function. In some instances, the position of the mouse over the fileselector is also memorized. o For example, when you click on a SAVE button, a fileselector appears. Upon exiting the fileselector, the mouse cursor is returned to the SAVE button. If you select SAVE again, the mouse cursor is "snapped" to its last position over the fileselector and returned to the SAVE button upon exiting the fileselector. NOTE: The "snapping" feature defaults to OFF. Mouse positions must first be memorized before they can be snapped (which means you have to use/set them first). All positions are erased when you quit the program. Since this is the only "global" feature within Ocultar, it didn't make sense to create a "preferences" file for only one feature. It also couldn't be saved to any of the other files since they are only loaded for specific sections of the program as needed. If requesting a MASTER DISK with your registration, specify if you'd like like this feature to default to OFF or ON. c) DISTRIBUTION ------------ If you have obtained an UNREGISTERED copy of Ocultar... You are free to copy and distribute this program as long as the files... OCULT3_0.PRG \ OCULT3_0.RSC \ OCULTAR .DAT \ OCULTAR .CFG \ OCULTACC.ACC OCULT3_0.TXT \ OCULTAR .CUR \ OCULTREG.TXT \ OCULT_UD.TXT \ OCULTAR .OPC READ_NOW.TXT \ OTHERTTL.TXT \ OCULTPIC.LZH \ KILLIT .DAT are included, are NOT MODIFIED in ANY way, and NO FEE of ANY TYPE is incurred upon the recipient for the files _themselves_. d) REGISTRATION ------------ The following registration terms and fees are subject to change without notice. Any materials which cannot be processed WILL be returned. See the file OTHERTTL.TXT for instructions on obtaining current prices. Anyone sending in a registration within 30 days of requesting a "current price" list will not be subject to any increase which MAY be incurred within those 30 days. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - o If you are satisfied with Ocultar, AS IS, and continue to use it, you are required under Federal Law to register your copy. The suggested registration fee for Ocultar, AS IS, is only $15.00 (fifteen U.S. dollars). o If you would like to receive the Ocultar Master Disk, which removes the copyright notices and the backdoor "Carl" , you can register your copy of Ocultar for only $15.00 (fifteen U.S. dollars), plus $3.50* for materials, shipping and handling ($18.50 total). o If you wish, you may include with your registration a floppy disk, a floppy disk mailer and SUFFICIENT U.S. Postage in lieu of the $3.50* materials/shipping/handling fee. o You may register by using the enclosed registration form, or by filling out the necessary information on a piece of paper and sending it to... - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Carl J. Distributing registered versions not only cheats the author out of the time and effort put into the development of the program, but also cheats YOU out of the money you have spent to become a registered user. Violation of this registration agreement will result in the immediate cancellation of ANY and ALL program registration agreements you may have made with the author. You WILL NOT be eligible for ANY future support or registrations. e) SHAREWARE --------- Shareware software is NOT free. Shareware authors retain all rights to their software under the Federal Copyright Laws and allow distribution of their programs with minimum restrictions. With Shareware software you are given the opportunity to "try out" the software before deciding whether or not to purchase it. Shareware authors are trusting you to NOT take advantage of them by stealing their software (continuing to use it without paying for it). Think about it this way. The Shareware author has done some work for you with the understanding that you will pay him/her FOR that work. How would you feel if come pay-day your boss decided not to pay you for the weeks work ? That's exactly what happens when you decide not to pay the author for their program. The bottom line is this, if you are using a SHAREWARE program and have NOT paid the author for your copy, you are breaking a Federal Law. If discovered, you ARE subject to Federal prosecution (no kidding). See section 410(a) of title 17 of the Copyright Code. f) CREDITS ------- Special thanks to Larry Duke for TT compatibility !!! For example, if you wish to use NeoDesk (C)Gribnif Software when you turn on your system, you can configure a setup which loads all of your NeoDesk programs and accessories. Any files you don't select will be disabled or ignored so that only the files you selected are loaded into memory. DESKTOP/NEWDESK.INF FILES ------------------------- You may first wish to create the DESKTOP/NEWDESK.INF files which will define the desktop setup you desire. Give them a name which reflects your intention, like DATABASE.INF , and copy them to a single directory, ie: C:\AUTO\OCULTSTF\*.* . Once one of these files is assigned to a "setup" you shouldn't change its name. If you do Ocultar will be unable to find it. Also be certain to ensure that ONLY your DESKTOP/NEWDESK.INF files end with the letters .INF . EXTRA FILES ----------- You can also set up any "extra" data files and keep them in the same directory as your .INF files (although this is NOT essential). It will, however, make it easier for you to find them and reduce the amount of work Ocultar has to perform at bootup. WHAT OTHER TYPE OF FILE CAN I COPY ? ------------------------------------ The "extra" files can be ANYTHING at all. For example, if you are using STARTGEM to automatically load programs at bootup, you can keep the various STARTGEM.INF files here. You may wish to rename them as STARTGEM.STG or such so that you do not confuse them with your DESKTOP.INF files. The name of the file is only important to you in that it identifies the file. When you copy it from the "EXTRAS" page you may choose ANY new name for it when it's copied. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU SELECT A SETUP ------------------------------------ When you select a "setup" key at bootup, Ocultar will activate ALL of the files assigned to that key in the .CFG file. It will also deactivate any programs or accessories which are not assigned to that setup key. It will then look for any files listed on the "EXTRAS" page and copy them from whatever source you specified to any destination and name you specified. REMEMBER, do NOT change the names of these files after you have saved them to OCULTAR.CFG or Ocultar will not be able to locate them. i) TOS 1.4, 1.6, 1.62, 2.05+ ------------------------- If you have TOS version 1.4, 1.6 (and/or maybe 1.62), you should be aware of the following. Ocultar allocates memory at bootup in order to expedite file copies. If you have one of these TOS versions and are having trouble copying files, you should try using POOLFIXx.PRG. This patch program fixes the memory allocation bug present in these versions of TOS. TTs and TOS 2.05+ ----------------- If you have TOS version 2.05 or later, you will only be able to view pictures from the configuration part of the program IF the computers resolution matches the pictures resolution. In addition to this, owners of TT computers will only be able to view a picture if the TT is in the same resolution as that in which the picture was created (this is the same thing as the previous paragraph, but I thought I'd mention it again since TTs have 6 resolutions and you don't need a TT to have TOS 2.05 or later). Any attempt to switch resolutions on machines with TOS 2.05 or later results in the automatic reloading of any desk accessories. This will cause Ocultar (and ANY other program which switches resolutions for whatever reason) to crash. This is a drawback of TOS. You CAN still select a picture to view at bootup and Ocultar WILL be able to display it, since TOS is unaware of your desk accessories at this point. LINE A VARIABLES ---------------- If you have an Atari TT and Ocultars displays seem disjointed, you probably need the patch program which restores the "Line A variables". If anyone can tell me how to get INT{L~A-12} and INT{L~A-4} out of VDI without opening a work station I'd be ever so grateful. j) PARTING THOUGHTS ---------------- Ocultar will ONLY ignore itself (automatically). I didn't feel comfortable trusting any other program to behave by itself. I'd rather have the ability to disable it at bootup. This is why StartGem and HeadStart were not included (although I have never heard of any problems with either of them). Speaking of which, if you don't have TOS 1.4 or newer you will need to obtain a copy of StartGem or HeadStart in order to automatically load a program at bootup. The speed at which Ocultar processes your setup is influenced by how many files you have to delete, rename, and copy. IOW: The smaller the setup, the faster the process. Keeping all of your EXTRA files in seperate places will also slow the process down. This doesn't mean that you should trim your setups. I just thought I'd mention it in case you were wondering what Ocultar was doing.
