                       Feature Description

Have you ever tried looking for a letter you wrote six months ago
but could not find the diskette you stored the file on? Or, do
you just have so many disks lying around you can not seem to keep
track of them all?

CatMan-DO!: A management tool to help you keep track of all your
files stored on diskettes. CatMan will allow you to catalog and
cross-reference data files, programs, or any other files you
have.

How often have your tried to cram all the file names onto the
diskette label? Instead, mark the diskette with the same
identifier you entered into the Label field. Now, CatMan can
track the files by the Label.

The automatic Bulk Load feature is the quickest method to build
your database. Simply pop in a diskette, provide the label name
and hit the enter key.

Files listed in CatMan can be identified by:

     File Name the DOS file
Where It Is a directory path or disk location
  Package Name an application name
         Label a personalized identifier
Categories up to 6 cross-reference words

The Description in CatMan provides an open text area for each
entry. This area is useful for any notes or comments you may
have about the file. For example, a software librarian may use
this area to hold a copy of the FILE_ID.DIZ or track who has
borrowed it.

For those who prefer printed material, CatMan can print a listing
by Label, File Name or Package Name to keep in a notebook.

CatMan can also compare filenames across many disks to uncover
duplicates. From this you can determine the existence of older
data and older versions of programs. Then, you can go back and
delete those old files and reclaim previously unusable disk space
or even entire diskettes.

With CatMan you will have your entire data disk library cataloged
and organized in no time. And, once you have loaded all your
information, the time you save finding what you need will be
incredible.

                         Getting Started

CatMan-DO! is menu driven. It is intuitively easy to use. A
Help Box or Q-Card appears at the bottom of the screen. It
displays "what to do now" information.

Hold down the Alt key for several seconds to activate a pop-up
window displaying a list of Hot Keys. These features are
available at any time by pressing either the Alt key and the
appropriate letter or the correct Function Key :

    Alt N : Note Pad [F2]
    Alt S : Save & Continue [F3]
    Alt X : Save & Exit to DOS [F4]
    Alt T : Tag List (Display) [F5]
      ESC : I am done with this ... [F10]

The ESC key and F10 have the same effect. It will let you escape
from where you are and return to where you were. Pressing the ESC
key enough times will return to the top level Main Menu.

WARNING : You should never exit CatMan-DO! by turning off the
power. This could corrupt your data files.

                         Using the Mouse

CatMan-DO! will automatically detect whether or not a mouse is
active. If detected, a mouse character will appear on your
screen.

The mouse is set up to respond to a single button click or drag.
Both buttons on a 2 button mouse will respond in the same manner.

You can scroll through a list (or text) by dragging the upper or
lower potion of the pop up window. For example, select one of
the topics from the Bulk Load menu. Move the mouse pointer to
the lower portion of the window and depress the mouse button. The
screen will scroll downward until the end of text is reached.
Move the move pointer toward the top of the window to scroll
toward the beginning of the text.

To close the current window, move the pointer outside the window
boundary and click the mouse.

To select a menu item, click once to highlight and again to
activate. A single click outside the current window will close
the window (has the same affect as pressing the ESC key).

                  Understanding the Menu Items

-Notepad
This feature lets you enter "free hand" text about
anything you like. You can also use the Ctrl-R key
combination to read any text files into the Notepad area.

-Files
All of the selections under Files are for manipulating
        individual file information.

-View
You can look at each of the characteristics that
CatMan-DO! has captured about any given file in the
database. It also displays additional information that
you have input pertaining to a file. This includes the
        following:

        File Name - a 12 character name (8 = file and 3 = extension)
Where is it? - location (directory) of that file on a given disk
Package Name - any software package name you enter
Category - up to six per file name, that you choose and enter
Date Stamp - the date and time stamp for that file
Label - the label name given to the disk on which the file resides

You can also view the Description or the Hardware infomation
boxes. These contain information that has been
        previously input manually.

-New

This option lets you manually input the information
explained above about a new file to be included in the
        CatMan-DO! database.

Press <Alt C> while in a category field to make a
selection from a list of existing categories.

Enter *.* into the File Name field to start File Finder.
The Date Stamp field will be updated once a file is
selected. You can not enter the Date Stamp directly.

-Remove

You can delete the selected file from the database. This
is the only way to delete a record. Once a record is
        removed it is gone forever!

Note: MEGADUMP.EXE is special utility is available to
registered users to remove more than one record at a
time. See README.TXT for more information.

-Alter

This lets you change any of the above mentioned
information about a record. The feature interaction is
similar to entering a New record.

Date Stamp field can not be edited nor can the File Name
if Bulk Load was used to enter this record.

-Hard Copy

You can send a copy of the record to the printer. This
is a complete listing of all the information about the
record. A minimum of a page is printed for each record.

        Your choices are: All Programs
                          Tag List
                          Search List.

-Soft Copy

Same as Hard Copy except the information is sent to a
        specified ASCII file.

-Tag List

A total of 15 records can be tagged for later use. They
are stored in your configuration when you exit are
preserved until the next time you use CatMan.

Tagged records can be entered into the Search List.

-Untag All

This allows you to remove all files on the Tag List that
        were previously selected.

Bulk Load

This option is used to load the filename information from
a given diskette automatically, manually, or selectively.

-Automatic Mode

This mode lets you place a diskette into the selected
drive and then it automatically loads pertinent file
characteristics found on the diskette into the CatMan-DO!
        database.

It also prompts you to input, and thereby associate, a
unique label name for the diskette that can then be used
to track those files found on that diskette. You can
place diskette after diskette into the floppy drive until
you have loaded and cataloged your entire file library.

-Manual Mode

The selections under this mode are used to manually load
files into the CatMan-DO! database. It allows you to
manually perform each of the process automatically done
        under Bulk Load.

diskette of files in the work area list that have been

read the diskettes that you are loading into the
        CatMan-DO! database.

be loaded by using a file extension mask such as:

                 *.EXE *.ZIP *.ARC

Search

number of options which can then be viewed under
        Listings.

-Search By

        following criteria:

                Package Name Hardware
                File Name Category
                Label Both Categories

or not. Search List is automatically turned on after a
        successful search has been performed.

-Duplicate Files

This feature automatically searches the entire database
and extracts all duplicate file names and then places
        them on the Search List.

You can then view the list using the Listings option to
see how many duplicates of any given file you may have.

You can tell on which diskettes they reside and you can
determine which is the latest version of a file by the
        Date Stamp displayed.

-Load Option

The Search List can be loaded with either:

                Package Name (PN)
                File Name (FN)
                Label Name (LN)

These options let you view the list of files loaded into
the CatMan-DO! database in a variety of formats, on the
screen. You can scroll through the list using the PgUp
or PgDn keys to locate any file in the database.

You can select a starting point in any list by using the
Shift-letter key combination where letter represents the
first letter of a file name at which you want to begin
